In Leeds it's called the Town Hall because it opened in 1858 and Leeds wasn't made a city until 1893. So when it was opened by Queen Victoria herself Leeds was still officially a Town. Great seeing you walk round my home city 😃 and Briggate was originally laid out back in 1207.
The building hoarding outside the town hall is,I was told, connected with work underneath the structure ,creating a theatre /concert space ...in the 1940s there was a restaurant/canteen underground at the rear of the structure .several blocked off rooms ,partitioned years ago have been returned to their original purpose ..it is strange but despite spending my 77years here ,i can never tire of gazing at it in admiration and wonder, not so much at its dimensions(,brussels has one larger),but at its grace and beauty..it radiates a peace, reassurance, and thankfulness that all beauty does
Good to see you on the right side of the Pennies, in my home town of Leeds, glad you found your way here. It's a good place to live. Hope you had a good day. Thanks for showing off the great city of Leeds it's not all grim and we are lovely folk too. ❤❤❤
M&S started life in 1884, when the immigrant Michael Marks came to the north of England and managed to secure a stall at Kirkgate Market in Leeds. In 1909 M&S opened a store at 76 Briggate which is the store you spotted
Good Evening steve. I really like Leeds. I loved seeing those Beautiful and very Architectual and Historical Archades. you walked along and was just Gobsmacked how Stunning all of those Shops, Cafe's and restaurants looked. Even some of those Incredible Pubs and those Huge Historical buildings. What a Superb city to Admire it's Beauty. I really liked seeing those Christmas Markets as well. Lots of Stands to visit, Plenty of Food and Drink to refresh ones self. It is really Good for the Body, Mind and Soul to visit different places in the World. Just really makes you feel Alive again. Leeds City has got that Good Feeling Vibe and Atmosphere. I really enjoyed this one Steve. Thank you for sharing.
The outside ornate characters of the 3 legs and the horse and trumpet have always belied the less than graceful manners of their clientels ....the wheel outside the art gallery has regrettably become a feature at times ...we're pleased you bestowed your honest ,fair minded commentary on our city.....all places have their histories and uplifting sights and nowhere has a monopoly of the best people or the best of everything..I know that much in my 77years
They have the best old-style marble shopping centre built in 1900. Like you say, it is beautiful. Very, very nice to behold! The Three Legs building looked nice as well ❤Thank you for this video too❤
Wow Leeds looks amazing 😀 I have a friend who always says Leeds is one of her favourite cities and especially for shopping 🛍️ I think I can see why 😊 great job showing us around Stephen 👍Thanks and take care, until next time Pauline from Blackpool living in Canada 🍁
Wow this is strange, seeing you walking round my home town. It's not the same as it once was, but the history and beautiful architecture cannot be denied, and that's why I'm proud to be from Leeds! Hopefully you come back for another proper look around places you missed such as the grand old Kirkgate Market (just behind you when you're near the Corn Exchange), Millennium Square (where the ice rink and more of our Christmas market was this year, the full thing used to be held there at one point) with the surrounding Civic Hall, City Museum etc. I could go on all day haha! If you ever need any tips, let me know; I know a lot of history and stories from even before my time (I'm nearly 37). Thanks to you I know similar stuff about Blackpool! Oh and the Three Legs is one fancy looking building, but not too sure about the pub itself and its clientele if you get my drift (sorry if I offend anyone there!). Another fantastic video Stephen, even if i may be biased for this one!
Did you know the Leeds City Varieties Theatre is where the old BBC Sunday Night TV show The Good Old Days was filmed, it’s of the main drag on the right hand side opposite Wendy’s. Set back.
I went my uncle malcom. West Ham were at Elland Rd. First time i went north. Ive been here now 23 years. Blackpool my home. Malcolm has passed. All my relatives have passed. Lost 2 friends this year. Paul and mick 2 of my best friend's xxx
Greeting from London and thanks for the wander around Leeds. I was only in Leeds once in 1979 for a punk festival. We arrived on a coach from London and went home on a coach... so it was great to eventually see the City of Leeds :)
Thanks for sharing this Stephen I've never been to Leeds I'd love it if you done a video of Preston cos I'm thinking of living there 😀 all the best from me in Birmingham 😊
Hi Stephen thanks for another great video we have an arcade similar to that in Glasgow city centre mostly filled with posh jewellers, the Argyle Arcade take care and have a lovely evening 😊
Very interesting Stephen, I heard recently that Leeds is the largest European City not to have a metro or tram system. Thanks for all your videos during the last year Stephen, Merry Christmas and Best wishes for 2024.🎉
Blackpool comes to Leeds. Does anyone remember jumbo records. I used to work in London ringing record shops who didnt get reps. Jumbo was one of my customers as was Pink Panther Carlisle Keith. I'd ring him at 5.30 every Monday and we always had a brilliant chat. I stayed in Leeds at the Queens and remember seeing Jimmy Savilles gold coffin in the reception. Nasty man.
Thanks very much Stephen for showing us round another city it is a nice place although it's been many years since i was there i hope you have a Merry Christmas

Thanks for another informative video Stephen, you certainly do like to travel. Read in the Gazette that yet another abandoned hotel was raided on Withnell road, with 13 rooms full,. Why Blackpool,it seems to attract them. Well Blackpool seems to have put Leeds to shame as far as there Christmas markets go.
Was in Leeds for the first time in July. Not a bad city at all. I was impressed with it. Never stayed over so only seen it at daytime. I will return at some point to sample the night life. Good video again Stephen. Take care and have a great Christmas. Ian,Glasgow 👍
I was in Leeds last week very foggy and raining, they spread the market all over this year better when its all together, some good pubs there, you should visit the armory and docs in summer

Wow, where to begin. Welcome to Yorkshire, again Stephen I'm 66, upto the age of 7 I used to go to Schofields department store (now destroyed) in Leeds to see Father Christmas. Very Interesting upload, thanks. 👍 I lived in Leeds for 10 years in the late 80's - mid 90's for work purposes. I've not had cause to go back and hardly recognise it apart from the street layouts. It does have some amazing architecture but most large city centres look the same now now with all the chain shops. Nice to see some of the old pubs have survived though.
Great video Stephen of our home City, to say that you didn't know where you was walking you've captured some of the best parts. It's a pity you missed Millennium Square which was at the back of City 'Town Hall' which is where most of the Christmas market was. If you come back again, please let us know and we will sure you some more places. Thank you for a great video, we don't appreciate what's on our doorstep! Oh, Stephen, you should’ve done your research. You missed out Leeds Market, the City Square and Whitelocks 🍻. A second visit required. Leeds = my city of birth. Blackpool = my adopted city, by marriage. Ah’ll sithi.
Why not come to one of the Meet Up Piano Meetings - in Leeds Clothworkers, Sheffield and Manchester. You'd love it a great opportunity to meet new people and hear some piano performances. I live in Sheffield and visit the other Cities frequently. Sheffield tries. It's not the best City in Yorkshire, but it tries its best. It still has nice things to offer to visitors. Just not a Seafront. I'm thankful for Northern Rail - I travel everywhere. But still feel Sheffield and Hull (my hometown) have my heart.
On the Lion and the walls of the town hall as well as the wall below the city map you can see shrapnel dinks from April 1941 When the Luftwaffe paid a visit
Wishing you a Merry Christmas Stephen so thanks for another video about a walk about in Leeds and I went to Leeds before in Yorkshire I enjoyed the video.
Leeds is local to me, its the 4th biggest city in England after London, Birmingham and Manchester. Briggate is the main shopping street, Theres plenty of shopping centres but the biggest one in the city centre is called the Trinity. Next time you visit you need to get yourself in Kirkgate Market Hall, its a proper old fashioned market you don't find anywhere else these days and a very impressive building!
That's because Bradford is lumped in with Leeds in the city boundaries despite being a different city all together and quite seperate from Leeds (and adding around 500,000 to Leeds population).. Realistically Manchester and Liverpool (including its neighbouring boroughs such as Sefton and Wirral) are bigger cities with bigger continous urban populations. Drone videos clearly show this as does Google satellite view.
@@cmg1819 lt's only connected with Bradford when considering the built up area. The Manchester conurbation is bigger than Leeds, but Liverpool area is smaller than the Leeds conurbation.
@billythedog-309 The Liverpool City Region (formerly known as "Merseyside") has a population of over 1.5 million which places it above Leeds conurbation by some margin. Its reflected in the size of the city centres with Liverpool's clearly covering a bigger area.
@@cmg1819 There are several measures of what constitutes a city, a metropolitan area and a conurbation and on the ones l've seen the Leeds/Bradford conurbation was 1,777,9341 in 2011 making it the 4th most populous in the UK after London, Birmingham and Manchester.
Fun fact from a Leeds local. The old sign in the alley by the horse and trumpet pub is “Circle and Boxes” - it’s an old entrance to a theatre now accessed from the other side. The Christmas market is spread all over the city and it’s had a lot of criticism from people. And having been to Leeds, Liverpool and Manchester, Leeds sucks lol 😂 and I’m not a fan of Liverpool. York is a much nicer city centre.

Just leaving Leeds on the train to Nottingham now
Trinty centre is really nice
Fun fact from a Leeds local. The old sign in the alley by the horse and trumpet pub is “Circle and Boxes” - it’s an old entrance to a theatre now accessed from the other side. The Christmas market is spread all over the city and it’s had a lot of criticism from people. And having been to Leeds, Liverpool and Manchester, Leeds sucks lol 😂 and I’m not a fan of Liverpool. York is a much nicer city centre.
All the other comments seem to disagree with you, maybe you’re the problem, nobody’s keeping you here
I'm glad ge didn't come to Castleford, he'd have walked back out lol 👍.. im assuming he's back in Blackpool now celebrating mad friday lol
