- I take a look around Scarborough on my first ever visit. I did not do any research before visiting, so I find out about things as I come across them.

There used to be 5 funicular cliff lifts in Scarborough 2 in the North Bay and 3 in the South Bay. The circle you could see from Spa Bridge is now a car park but in Victorian times it was an aquarium...When I was a kid I used to call it Tracy Island 😆🤦🏼♀️
@SuperLisalis a funicular is a tramway that works on a pully system. So as one vehicle goes down the second will go up at the same time. I think it works on weight too originally I could be wrong.
@@HolyFreakinDragonSlayer Wowzer, thankyou so much dragonSlayer. Great info. Thinking we had one here at Gynn sq, near the prom cafe In Blackpool !! Keep slaying those dragons.
@@HolyFreakinDragonSlayer Yes you described it well. I think some of them worked with water.
@@SuperLisalis As well as the aquarium there was a zoo as well. There is a video on here tells you about the history of it. Sorry I can't remember the name of the person who uploaded it though.
Yes the Cliff tramways as they now call them used to be water powered, not really powered as it was just a balancing act the one at the bottom would have a full tank of water the one at the top would fill its tank till it out weighed the bottom car then they would start to travel up and down the cliff. I believe the last one operating works off of an electric motor however. Folkstone has a water powered one. Also Lynton and Lynmouth. Also Saltburn North Yorkshire.
I may be a biased Yorkshireman but Scarborough is the prettiest resort in the country so I’m pleased you really enjoyed the place Stephen, despite there not being much open on the sea front. You really have to visit in summer when all the gardens are in bloom and everything’s open, the kids are enjoying the beach and the fishermen are bringing in the catch of the day! It’s so quintessentially English it makes your heart ache!❤️😍🥰
Thanks again for your tour.👍🏼
Beautiful.
I wouldn't say prettiest per se, but it's certainly up there with the prettiest resorts.
They seem to have spoilt North bay The water park swimming complex has gone and the amusement park and chair lift also no more is the train still running? what's the open top bus service like? Does Peaseholm park still have the radio controlled boat war fare displays?
@@kevanparker908 ... Open top bus service operates at weekends and during school holidays from 1st of April up till the end of summer.
Not been since the 60s.
This was one of your best videos, Steve. Beautiful atmosphere, interesting buildings of all types. I bet your legs are weary after all that walking and hundreds of stairs. Absolutely loved it!!!
Wow Scarborough looks fantastic, well kept, clean, not graffitied up. The jewel of The East Coast. We have been many times and it never disappoints, shame a lot of the pubs have shut up. Great video Stephen always a thumbs up.
Thanks.
Thanks for your hard work in showing us around, hope you enjoyed your visit Stephen. 🏴🏴
I love Bridlington and Scarborough 👍
Thanks so much for that recording you must be very fit . We stayed at the Norbreck on north bay near the church yard and there’s Peasholm park at north bay you will have to go back. One of the last holidays we had before my precious husband died so good to see it all again blessings to you Stephen from Durham
Absolutely fantastic video, what a view you've given us.
Haven`t been to Scarborough for over 40 years, the only thing I can remember is the beautiful Peasholm Park and the remote control battles they used to have there.
Many thanks for showing us around. Keep up the good work.
Best wishes from the Lone Wolf in the lakes. 🕊
Hi mate another cracking upload. I visit Blackpool every September with the wife. In my youth I was 16 1979 I visited Scarborough with my mates drove down took 7 hrs lol whooosh where have all the years went. Saw Freddie Starr at the Floral Halls Theatre I think it’s demolished now the years fly by thanks for another cracking video 👍. Malcolm Kerr . Beith North Ayrshire . Scotland
This was a great video. Thanks Stephen xx
Glad you enjoyed it Sharon
That was a great video thanks. It brought back lots of memories of Scarborough. We used to stay in West Square when we were on holiday. I used to think it was miles from the beach.
Knackering just watching Stephen! The sweep of the North Bay looks stunning! Certainly shades of Whitby here too. A town that is fairy spread out, lots to explore, and Peasholm Park pretty, illuminated at night to my recollection.
❤that was really interesting thanks Stephen n well done for all the walking 😊x
I'm in Scarborough now for the weekend with my daughter and granddaughter. 😊
Very nice, what a nice clean resort town, the council have done a great job with keeping buildings occupied and maintained, those open areas and view points are great too. Thanks for the long hike, it was a walk to be remembered.
Cheers from San Diego
Thanks Julian.
I’ve had some lovely holidays in Scarborough it’s beautiful and unlike Blackpool they have mostly left the Victorian structure in place. My Grandmother used to take herself off on the train regularly to Scarborough until her 90’s.
Another part that used to be lovely but was a little run down last time I visited was Peashome Park, Filey is nice as well.
Thanks Wendy. I did visit Peasholm Park the next day.
Absolutely loved this. Never been to Scarborough and this has made me want to visit. Loved the buildings and seems to have a nice vibe, quite Victorian. Really well presented, thanks 😀
You can't beat Scarborough. It's my favourite British seaside resort.
Even better than Llandudno? But that is 🏴, not British I guess.
@@V.T.1989 Miles better than Llandudno, and better than Barry Island where i was brought up. Back in the 70s Barry Island was great, but not now.
@@andyovhull1875 I would like to completely disagree with you there, when visiting Wales it's a beautiful place, currently living in Scarborough after moving from the city a few years ago, it's not as good as people seem to think, rundown, barely any job opportunities and the novelty of the beach wears off extremely fast. Boring place with nothing to do after a few days.
@@Jamez1093 I live just down the road from Scarborough myself (in Hull) and have been visiting every few months for 45 years since i moved to Yorkshire. Everywhere has become run down, but Scarborough is still lovely. It depends what you like. It has everything for me. And Wales is the best, but as far as seaside resorts go, Scabby is top in my opinion...As long as you stay out of the Grand!
Dont know how i missed this, saw your hotel ones. This is so fascinating, what a beautiful place Scarborough is . Stephen you did a grand job showing it to us with the Robins in fine fettle. Loved it, thankyou so much for showing us.
Glad you enjoyed it SuperLisalis
I first went to Scarborough in the eighties on a family holiday and thought it was good.
I went again last year and enjoyed a few days there and was delighted to see that they had a Papas chip shop.
Thanks for sharing Stephen
☕👍
Lovely scenery
Good video enjoyed this thank you for sharing 😊
The council look after this side brilliantly. Keep going
You did it justice, you are correct Scarborough is unique. it's like comparing seagulls to scones, comparing Scarborough to Blackpool,im so glad you went up to see Anne.
Hi Stephen, I really enjoyed this video, you captured the spirit of Scarborough so well. It is a beautiful seaside resort, you brought it all back to us, we have walked the path you took today, many times. Thank you for showing us all the good things about Scarborough.xxxx
Glad you enjoyed it Jean.
Hi Stephen glad you enjoyed your visit to Scarborough it's a nice resort particularly in summer when the trees and flowers in bloom hope you're able to make a return visit you could visit peashome park
Absolutely.Luckily I did get to visit Peasolhm Park the next day.
Good to see you out and about. Only so many hundreds of times can film the same parts of Blackpool. 🙌
We, in Blackpool used to have many Oak /Elm trees, however they had to be cut down as they got the Dutch Elm disease if I remember correctly. I used to return home with car boot full for the coal fire . Think we should all sell up n move to Scarborough its so beautiful.
Another superb video, Scarborough, is a great seaside town, been there a few times. Excellent work on the video Stephen, your videos keep getting better. 😊
I love Scarborough. I am going in September I haven't been for years. In the Victorian times all the rich used to visit to take the waters thats why there is all the beautiful cresents and gardens. I love the history of the place. I am a fan of the Brontes and two of the sisters died of TB they both were only in their twenties. Anne went there hoping that fresh air and the waters woud help. But she died shortly after arrivng. Walking all the hills will keep you fit . Thanks for all your brilliant videos .😊
I went to Scarborough twice 10 years ago ! Lots of good memories again Thank you so much for the video !
I used to live in Scarborough with my ex missus , and I took her to Blackpool as she had never been!...and now you are doing the opposite!
The Spa lift was operational in the early 2000s whenI attended a National MIND Conference there. Our hotel was in the crescent that you can see the back of from the long bridge across the valley. Although the conference centre is within the Spa buildings, I don't think there are baths or anything open nowadays. Ever the icebreaker, my friend Pat had everybody in the lift car in fits of laughter by alling it a vibrator on the first morning - then by producing her vibrator from her handbag during the ride down on the second day! Although we generally came to Blackpool for our family holidays, we did try Scarborough instead in 1977 and 1979; when everything was in much fuller swing. The Spa Pavillion was then used as a theatre much like the Winter Gardens Pavilion in Blackpool used to be. There was an absolutely huge theatre further up, past the Grand Hotel in operation then too, as well as another near the railway station and yet another open-air one, in a park on the North Bay. A much smaller and less populous town than Blackpool in the first place, Scarborough is also a shadow of what it was back then, though it should probably be viewed as including the vast clifftop caravan parks at least halfway to Filey, as that's where the morer affordable holiday accommodation was, back then.
Never been to Scarborough Stephen, thank you for showing me what I've missed. What a lovely place and those gardens will look stunning in the summer. Only thing that puts me off are those hills, no wonder you were knackered!😊😊😊
Yes, Scarborough truly is an amazing place ... but you do need to be fit to see it all. 😂
I enjoyed that. I seem to recall from when I was young that timber ships used to dock and get unloaded in the harbour.
thanks Steve, that was very interesting, a really good trip around Scarborough, i never had the time to see as much as that, i visited the north beach as they were updating the sea defences, lovely beach! we had a good sunrise too from the royal terrace, reminds me of Bath in places too
Hi Stephen, I really enjoyed that look around Scarborough. Fair play. Thanks .
Thank you very much Stephen for sharing this great video from Scarborough with the fantastic views. You did well walking all that way up and down. Well done. 👍🥰❤️
Scarborough was seen as posh back in the day. It's where the better off went on holiday. The working class went to Blackpool or Morecambe (Bradford on sea) as it was known.
Brilliant video, showing beautiful Scarborough.
1867 what brilliant brickwork they built to make them last them days I bet it out lives my house 😂 it would be nice to see a few trees on the prom in Blackpool beautiful views they got a Cliff railway in Whitby I think a lovely sound is the sea no smelly Coronades 😂 till the next one 😊
Wow that was a nice surprise!, thank you for taking us around Scarborough!, first time I've been there, it's lovely! :)
Glad you enjoyed it
GOOD TO SEE YOU HAVE BROADENED YOUR HORIZON FOR A CHANGE, SCARBOROUGH IS ALWAYS WORTH A VISIT.
Ive never had the chance to get to scarborough but was planning to now youve posted this i will def going to visit thank you Stephen
I'm loving the Scarborough videos great work and thanks Stephen❤
Glad you like them!
I used to love Scarborough, I'd forgotten how nice it was ❤ The gardens and architecture are very good.
Scarborough is on the east coast so you know if your looking towards the sea Left is North and right is south,I love Scarborough and stayed at the Grand Hotel when I was younger with my grandparents who are no longer here anymore so it brings back nice memories and emotions.Good video mate.
I lost my bearings due to being on the opposite coast to Blackpool.
Easily done my friend.
2:15 Wow what a beautiful facade!
This was lovely to watch, thank you for sharing sir
I went to Scarborough in the 2023 Easter Holidays when it was a Scooter Rally here and I had fish and chips here, so thanks Stephen for take a look around in Scarborough video I enjoyed that look around video.
The building by Luna Park was for when they charged a Toll for the road that goes round to North Bay.
Thanks 🙏
Nice to see your take on Scarborough. The building you walked through just before the North bay was a toll house I think. Need to go in summer you cant walk down the front as its so busy. More relaxed atmosphere in the North bay but it does have the sealife centre , a waterpark and peasholm park which is beautiful.
It looks beautiful considering moving to the area!
Good video enjoyed this ,
Have a Beer on Anthony 🍻 Luck Good 👍
I really enjoyed that Stephen. Keep exploring, you're doing a great job.
Glad you enjoyed it William.
Great long video Stephen love Scarborough Filey is nice too
Thanks Charles.
@@AWalkontheWildSideBlackpool 👍
Loved your trip i hope you come back to scarbrough again
You've brought back alot of memories there, I lived in Scarborough from 1977-84, can still remember what the shops used to be. You covered a fair bit of ground.
The ugly Pavilion Hotel was a magnificent building until the powers that be found a excuse to demolish it in the 70's as they usually do
My favourite haunt, I miss Yorkshire since moving away. Scarborough, as well as Robin Hoods Bay, Flamborough etc.. definitely need visiting. Nothing quiet like Yorkshire!
Coney Island is good fun. The Cyclone is great, and they also have a big wheel, where the inner cars rock when you reach 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock.
what a. delight to see Scarborough in the winter we enjoyed your video so much very entertaining Thank you.
Fantastic video Stephen. Scarborough looks really well kept and a lovely place to visit. Ill be adding ot to my list. You sure did cover some mileage in this vlog and it was definitely worth it with those views of the bay. Nice to see the fishing boats.
Scarborough has a cracking coastline Stephen, check out cliff Richard in sudden impact 😂😂 go ahead make my day 🤣🤣
Hi Stephen great video, hope you get the chance to visit Scarborough again, because you missed a lot of great places to go especially in the north bay especially peasholm park! My parents used to take me regularly as a kid and i loved going to Peasholm park! I try to get back at least once a year brings back great memories!
Thanks for watching. I did visit Peasholm Park before I left.
Fabulous video Stephen walkabout Scarborough town. I did visit a few years back but didn’t see half of what you saw here. I wasn’t all that impressed by the seafront but parts of the town that I didn’t see look very interesting. That tower at 44:37 would make an ideal holiday home if it isn’t already and here in Great Yarmouth the council have been busy converting our old town wall, ( the second most complete after York), towers into holiday homes very unique indeed. Plenty of up and down walking hills there and like you I’d be knackered too walking round there. Loved the old funicular railways there too.
Great video Stephen - we enjoyed that. Impressed with Scarborough.
Thank you for the tour enjoyed the funicular I walked the steps when I was there
The direction you were pointing at the beginning of the video was where a hotel called the Holbeck stood, before it collapsed into the sea due to a landslide.
Hi Stephen thank you for another great video as always Scarborough has some really nice parts and yes quite a bit of greenery too that tram lift thing looked cool have a great day xx
Great walk Steve, nice to see someone that's goes off the normal track around Scarborough, looks a great place, I think the catching pots are called whatever your going for as you always get more than you bargained for, The fishlocker from Cornwall is good to watch in the summer, he gets monsters in his pots,
Thanks. I'll check out The Fishlocker 👍
Great to see Scarborough Stephen, thanks for sharing your trip. I visit Scarborough a couple of times a year, always holidayed on the East Coast when we were growing up. You did well and covered some ground. Couple of gems you missed, if you go back again. When you walked over the bridge at the start near the posh holiday let chalet. You can climb some steps there to the Esplanade. Some stunning old buildings and gardens up there with a fantastic view of the bay. From there you can walk down towards the spa and check out the recently refurbished Italian Gardens, which are absolutely stunning.
The little clock tower pavilion you pointed out near the spa is the old clock cafe. Old fashioned cafe with homemade cakes and snacks. This cafe has one of the best views in Scarborough! Stunning spot for a cuppa.
On the sea front you walked past the Harbour Bar, which is a famous old Italian Ice Cream parlour. The interior is all original and art deco. The ice cream is mega. At the end of the video opposite the joke shop is the Lifeboat Chippy, which is a cracking chippy with takeaway and a small restaurant. Bob on. Anyway, thanks again and glad you enjoyed your trip. Best Wishes Graham
Love this video, Steven. I've recently become interested in Scarborough, as I've been watching re-runs of The Royal on ITV3. It was filmed there and looks so beautiful. If you visit again you might want to film the building used as the hospital, which is up on the Esplanade, opposite the Clock Tower. Thanks again for this one.
Great vlog, love Scarborough, not been for a few years, very busy in summer, on the front theres a lovely ice cream parlour they do a very nice nickerbocker glory, yummy 😋🍨 and lovely ice cream delights. Nice to see the spa end,the buildings are lovely. Did you go to Peasholm Park? North side, lovely park with lots of rides and boating lake nice walk round there. Thanks for all the lovely views from the tops, well done walking all that way, nice weather too. Take care thanks again bye 😊x
I did visit Peasolm Park before I left 👍
Good evening Hazel i hope everyone is well it's a wet and cold night here I'm just chilling out watching the darts on the TV Linda already in bed as she is out of the house for more than 12 hours on working days i hope to speak to you soon
@@AWalkontheWildSideBlackpool great hope you liked it x
@@georgesmellie8717 good evening George, all good here thanks, hope you and Linda are too. Been lovely day here 11 deg, had lovely longer stroll before lunch was really warm but windy, got washing almost dry too a bonus this time of year, just had a few spots of rain tea time, but it's fine so far but rain forecast later and in the night, see what tomorrow brings, looking like colder weather before next weekend and snow ❄️ oh yuk. Hate snow. Take care have a great weekend, bye for now spk soon ,😊
Thanks for another great vid. I really enjoyed watching your trip to Scarborough... you have a knack for getting a real feel of a place. I love your style :)
Glad you enjoyed it
You need to check out Scarborough in the summer months.
I would like to go back in summer.
Excellent video Stephen I do love the look of Scarborough, plenty of Arcades etc. The old Rail Lift looked amazing and good value. I love the old M&S. At least it was not Kicking off in Scarborough 👍😁 Lol. I look forward to your next adventure. I am enjoying these videos. Have a great weekend 👍👍
Great video stephen, I love Scarborough, quite a few years since I went, was great to look around again thanks to you😊
I love the seaside 😊😊
Brilliant m8 nicely done my favourite staycation place there on Thursday
Brilliant video Stephen showing just how good Scarborough is and as to offer.
As a Yorkshire man I might sound a bit bias but ,we really do have some cracking views and a top resort to visit.
Watching this video showed me even more interesting features to visit ....many thanks.
Cant wait for Whitby.
love this, you do a great job with these videos. educational and very interesting. Thank you
Thanks Stephen. I think it's V shaped in honour of Queen Victoria. Who I believe visited the hotel and resort. Great work😊 Victoria visited Scarborough before the Grand Hotel was built. I just checked.
In October me and my partner relocated over here from nearly Blackpool. I love it over it's beautiful watching the sunrise every morning is amazing. You missed lots of things here like Italian gardens,Peasholm Park, Olivers Mount, the Clock Tower and much more. Scarborough is a beautiful place full of very friendly people
Luckily I did get to visit Peasolhm Park the next day.
@@AWalkontheWildSideBlackpool good Scarborough is a beautiful place
Another great vlog Stephen, Scarborough is a lovely place and been many times, Peasholm Park on the north shore is worth a vist along with the small gauge railway 👌
We were in Scarborough the week before you.stayed over thr Bridge opposite the grand put the drone up on last morning when it had snowed in the night went over grand and over the harbour.
Great Scarborough video Steve...
Was it an intended pun when you mentioned a main drag to the town centre with the e cig shop in shot??
It made me chuckle.
I always look forward to watching your videos.
Very informative.
You should head down South West to the Plymouth area sometime...
Some impressive buildings and history down here too.
Its soooo relaxing watching this. You MUST take us to Whitby and Robin Hoods Bay! When its better weather! They knew how to build in the 17/1800's.
Did you find a Wetherspoons?! The railways opened up for the new seaside towns and the working class getting 2 weeks paid summer holidays. The even cheaper way were coaches.
We need to get a motor home and go exploring!
The Structure on the marine drive used to be a toll gate.
Elegant place. Even sea looking serene compared to Blackpool waves. The Victorians must have loved it
The wife and I love Scarborough. Great video, Steve👍
Thanks 👍
Great place, stayed at the Windmill just a few minutes from the train station. Was great staying in a genuine Windmill, recommend it!
Looks very posh and Victorian, and ok for mountain goats! Very grand, loved the art deco, that building reminded me of our town's old cinema that got burned down a few years ago, it was the Ritz then the ABC then Mr Smith's nightclub, and it had the neon lights on it like that it was gorgeous (Warrington) Of course it's a car park now. Interesting about the Brontes, am thinking of looking at Bronte country this summer. Love all the funiculars at Scarborough! No Scarborough fair or parsley sage rosemary or thyme though! xx
Hi Stephen I'm so pleased you went to my part of the country I'm only an hour away so have spent a lot of time in this Gem of a place it's beautiful place so much to see, and there crabb pots for lobsters as well, the spa doesn't have baths in it just a cafe and leisure rooms there is always something going on there especially in the summer and they have music outside where you can sit and enjoy someone playing the piano you have to be really fit for all the walking it's just up and down all the time I really hope you enjoyed your visit as much as I enjoyed this video, it's just a beautiful place isn't it it's quite a slog up to Anne Brontes grave isnt it ❤❤
Great video - Luna park is small but they pack loads in, (Miami, jump n smile, twist, dodgems, + kiddie rides etc) just take it away in the winter. The cliff lift by the spa does run just in season. The 30’s deco cinema was a 1700 seat Odeon built in 1936 and when It closed in 1988 was the second largest single screen cinema in the country. It’s now the home of the Stephen Joseph Theatre which was for a long time run by the famous playwright Alan Ayckbourn - pleased you liked Scarbados as much as I like Blackpool 👍
Scarborough is a lovely seaside location, full of history, heritage and scenery! Will be visiting later this year.. the luna park has temporary fairground rides but do come back in time for the season, I think last time I went they had a frog hopper, a miami, twister and a selection of kids rides and sideshows. The shutters are where the arcades and dodgems are situated.
Hi Stephen, loved the video. Reminded me of holidays I had with my parents in the 70s and 80s when we went every year to Scarborough. Nowadays myself and the wife go abroad for our main holidays but still visit both Blackpool and Scarborough for short 2-3 night breaks several times a year. Love both resorts, although very different, and watch your videos, although strange seeing you in Scarborough! Would be nice if you could go back and do a video of the north bay. There's not as much as in the south bay but Peasholm Park is beautiful. Thanks for the video.
There,s my childhood holidays in the Sixties, absolutely love Scarborough, sadly both my Aunt and Uncle have passed away but still get down from Newcastle as often as I can and still cannot go with out walking past the house I know so well in Brinkburn Road. Why do I do that knowing my folks are gone, always feel something whilst I pass that house !!!
thanks Stephen for another great video
I really enjoyed that Stephen it was so interesting thanks
Great video Stephen thanks again for sharing it with us we went to Scarborough it’s a very nice place we really enjoyed it and also went went to that same hotel as there was good entertainment on but we stayed just up from there at the premier inn which was very nice 👍 love when you take us out to different places you always make it interesting 😁 take care until next time Pauline from Blackpool living in Canada 🍁
