The pronunciation of GIF is a fun debate! Both "gif" (with a hard G) and "jif" (with a soft G) are widely accepted. The creator of the format, Steve Wilhite, prefers "jif" but ultimately, it's up to you!
Shadow: Name one word that starts with "G" that's pronounced like "J", Sonic. Sonic: Generations. That way between them then vocally make the direct reference, but the dialogue still makes sense :p.
They’re actually both right: 1. Sonic’s logic holds true because the P in JPEG can’t be an F without its partner H. Shadow also shows that a letter’s position can change its pronunciation in many cases (excepting the fact that English has many diverse dialects), hence U for Underwater vs Scuba and E for Emission vs Laser. 2. G generally can’t sound like J without being followed by an I, Y, or E (thanks, France). Because GIF has one of these combinations when pronounced as its own word, Steve Wilhite is correct in saying that’s the most proper pronunciation. HOWEVER, English pronunciation rules are not always set in stone because this is the most inconsistent and loanword-filled language in history and therefore we still have notable exceptions, hence “Gynecology” (thanks, Greece), “Gears” (thank you, Scandinavia) and “Gift.” (thanks, other Germanic tribes)

@@FylixAerou what does "Graphic Interchange Format" have to do with the pronounciation of "GIF"? The pronounciation of a word acronym is independent of the words that make up the acronym.
@@RationalFunction because GIF and graphic are treated as their own words. The same rule applies for every single word acronym and partial word acronym. Some other examples for this are: BASE - Bridge Antenna Span Earth (Long A and short A respectively) NATO - North Atlantic Treaty Organization (Long A, short A) GRAS - Generally Recognised As Safe (Hard G, soft G) CASA - Civil Aviation Safety Authority (Hard C pronounced like K and soft C like S respectively)
Why is JPEJ a good argument? G is never pronounced like j when it's on the end of a word. That's why words like "range" and "gorge" need an e added, so it can sound like a j.
@@youvegoneincognito2421 There's no need to be demeaning like that. The word hasn't been treated as an acronym pretty much sense its creation, that's why no one capitalizes it.
0:30 The best part of this is that Shadow could’ve easily said something like “Germs” or “Ginger” but chose to say Gentrification of all things Edit: Holy shit are you guys trying to comment every word in the goddamn dictionary that applies to this?
In my understanding, pronunciation ≠ grammar. Grammar has to do with the stuff you add to the end of words (inflection/morphology): e.g.: jump, jumped, jumping; or the irregular stuff: e.g., run, ran "All your base are belong to us" is messed up grammar, even if pronounced correctly. It has to do with inflection and classes of words, like nouns, verbs, etc. Also syntax. Inflection of nouns is declension. Inflection of verbs is conjugation. I think English does not have a lot of the former (except pronouns). But if you study other languages descended from PIE, you will suffer the horror of nouns that have multiple grammatical forms depending on gender, case, etc., which have to match up with verbs and/or adjectives in the sentence. English has problems with orthography: the mapping of letters to phonemes is not deterministic, so it's guesswork as to whether ⟨g⟩ maps to [g] or [dʒ]. But this isn't really grammar, in my book.
Laser being an acronym is the reason I give when explaining why "lazer" is always wrong. It's not the "British English" spelling " or the "American English" spelling, it's the "incorrect" spelling.
I would argue that "lazer" with a z is like "tazer" with a z. Taser is also an acronym, but people often use the Z spelling to differentiate it from the trademark product. You could also use lazer in this way, using it to describe a broader range of things that aren't technically lasers, but are very similar or are used in a different context. The acronym doesn't really make sense anymore, but if you're describing a different item and just using the acronym as a noun, then I guess it's probably not that big a deal.
Holy shit I didn't even realize that, I thought it was just a generic city but you're absolutely right, there are trolleys going through and everything
G people proved that if ya willing to kill over it it's easy to get "say it however you want" outta the creator, ending the debate. If J people were that nuts imagine the history lesson. I'm sure people killed each other over less but it's crazy and funny.
It's not just Australian. A jiffy is recognised internationally as the amount of time it takes light to cross the diameter of a neucleon (ie 1 Fermi) in a vacuum. Ie 1 jiffy is about 3 × 10^(−24) seconds or 0.000000000000000000000003s
This should have been the original dialogue. Imagine just going through the game and coming to this part, and then they just start arguing over something so stupid. Amazing.
you're confused Shadow would only make fun of Sonic for using words that start with G but pronounce them like they start with J the example in the video was 'general', which starts with G, but sounds like it starts with J, so Shadow mocked Sonic for it 'Gun' isn't a word Shadow would mock Sonic for But he would make fun of Sonic for going to Germany or Georgia
I love how the intense music stops when shadow explains what Laser stands for and sonic is just like "huh, didn't know that" then picks up right where is paused
This is exactly how I imagine these two arguing. Just purposefully getting on eachother's nerves without being so "edgy". Sick and tired of seeing modern Shadow just being a dick and putting on his best Vegeta impression, and Sonic being way too happy and cheesy. Gotta see them at eachother's throats, disagreeing but still not being on bad terms necessarily. Just finding the other a bit annoying to deal with.

Gotta love how Sonic actually makes a good argument with “J-Pej” but then immediately gets distracted by “laser” being an acronym
Unless the creator of .jpeg has insisted on that pronunciation, then Sonic's not right that Shadow should pronounce it like that.
@@FylixAerou what does "Graphic Interchange Format" have to do with the pronounciation of "GIF"? The pronounciation of a word acronym is independent of the words that make up the acronym.
@@umwhatamIdoinghere bc that's what gif stand for. You don't say jraphics do you?
@@RationalFunction because GIF and graphic are treated as their own words. The same rule applies for every single word acronym and partial word acronym.
Some other examples for this are:
BASE - Bridge Antenna Span Earth
(Long A and short A respectively)
NATO - North Atlantic Treaty Organization
(Long A, short A)
GRAS - Generally Recognised As Safe
(Hard G, soft G)
CASA - Civil Aviation Safety Authority
(Hard C pronounced like K and soft C like S respectively)
Why is JPEJ a good argument? G is never pronounced like j when it's on the end of a word. That's why words like "range" and "gorge" need an e added, so it can sound like a j.

You mean “Jrammar”!
Specifically pronunciation
@@godoftaxes ...
To really beat a dead horse, why do we pronounce grammar as "gram-MER"? Phonics is weird.
In my understanding, pronunciation ≠ grammar.
Grammar has to do with the stuff you add to the end of words (inflection/morphology):
e.g.: jump, jumped, jumping; or the irregular stuff: e.g., run, ran
"All your base are belong to us" is messed up grammar, even if pronounced correctly.
I love how a serious, plot-important conversation about Maria and Shadow's drive for revenge devolved into GIF after 2 sentences.
Somehow true to real life where conversations can derail at a moment's notice.

Light Amplification by the Ztimulated Emission of Radiation
But then we shouldn’t be saying laser either. We would have to say LASER.
