That part where you had to use the surveying equipment had me stumped for like 10 years, at least. I tried EVERYTHING. And there was no internet to help you figure things out.

While you can manually choose the path in the game, the path in your fortune isn't random. It's based on how you solved the puzzles before that point. The biggest factor in that is how you get past the bouncer at the theatre.

    • @diddymelone2265
      @diddymelone2265 Рік тому +4

true. that puzzle how to get past Biff is the only factor afaik, as the other puzzles until the fortune telling are not multiple choice.
it doesnt matter though, when Sophia tells you that the path of punching people in the face would be best suited to you (because you overcame Biff with violence), and you say "yeah I like action", she will not ask again whether you are sure or not, but will ask that if you choose the wits or team path instead.
and same for the other options, but it doesnt matter.
I remember when I played this with my father, we knocked Biff out, but chose the team path. it is still my favourite path through the game, but all 3 are worthwhile.
the action path is a bit lacking though, because the fighting isnt very entertaining to me.
it is totally worth for the death screens though.
do yourself a favour and lose a fist fight to any of the nazis in the labyrinth of knossos, some are actually hilarious.

This game is a gem. It's runaway success says it all. Written by a Hollywood writer, had unique and great story and visuals, huge replayability (not only the three paths but some of the puzzles also change) and the talkie version makes you feel like you are actually part of the story.
Choosing fists for first playthrough is indeed a bad choice, the team path is by far the best fleshed out and most popular.
By the way, I played it on ScummVM ported to Symbian OS (the OS for old Nokia smartphones, before Windows). Let me rephrase that, I played a freakin DOS adventure game on a 15 years old smartphone.
I was also the first one to upload a playthrough of the game on youtube. It was back at the time when videos were not allowed to be longer than 10 minutes and certain resolution so I had to painstainkingly cut the whole thing into meaningful parts and create a playlist. Later as UA-cam allowed longer videos and better resolutions other people posted full length playthroughs with better quality but I'll still cherish all the response my playthrough got back at the time.
This game is rightfully considered as the only fourth Indy story among the fans. Although it still has Nazis (as opposed to Crystal skull which has Commies) the story is way better and the added interactive element is a huge part of that. And I still think the game holds up today if you can get past the dated graphics and sound (I'm so used to seeing VGA graphics that my mind can "upscale" it automatically).

I believe the text at the end of the credits was meant to create hype for the Young Indy tv series that aired around the same time. But I agree; I wished we had gotten another IJ graphic adventure like this one and maybe even in the style of Full Throttle and CMI. At least We got two great 3D IJ games after it, and FoA is already 3 games in 1, so I guess we can't really complain.

I played before the internet era and this was the fun of the game that you will expend time looking to solve complex puzzles and riddlers.

hmm for the more obscure seeming puzzles, there is always an enviromental clue.
like on crete there is a diagram in one of the ruins showing exactly how to find the moon stone.
back in the day, in atlantis I didnt find the manual for the statue that must open the door and it took me like 3 trips for more orichalcum, cause I solved it via trial and error.
but trial and error is never needed, if only you explore carefully and heed attention to the environment.

Awesome to see this video! I know you were excited to be able to record DOS games from that earlier video, but man, I'm also 100% not surprised that the whole thing gave you some headaches anyway, lol. It's such a pain. That's actually one of the reasons I go to GOG less these days; those DOS games put up too much of a fight, frankly. Or even later games; I think the last retro game I got from them was Return to Castle Wolfenstein and that did not play nicely with my dual monitor setup at all. The Mouse Cursor would pretend it was locked to the right screen where the game was, but then randomly during gameplay, programs would start or the Start Menu would get clicked and I quickly realized that, nah, there's an invisible mouse moving on the desktop because it can't handle locking it to the game :P There's ALWAYS some problem with old PC games, eh? Oh well, at least you got an Indy review out and it looks and sounds great! Thank you, "original hardware," haha. (^-^)
Also, 6:50 got me thinking about other adventure games that might have some Indy-style fisticuffs. I believe Nightshade on the NES combines point-and-click inventory puzzle adventure gameplay with beat 'em up gameplay. Ooh, and I recall backing something on Kickstarter that is doing it called... _*looks it up..._ Brok the Investigator! Trailer for that: ua-cam.com/video/0rRPnG8YSjE/v-deo.html . Might wanna keep an eye out for those, because you're right, it's very unusual to see an adventure game genre mashup like that, and ya never know when it might be something special, eh?

I've been thinking about this game when the new movie was released, because in my mind, this is still the perfect Indiana Jones sequel after the three old movies.
Anyways, I also started playing it in ScummVM and you just mentioned that you also used it to play the talkie version of the game. And since I just started playing it too, I noticed in the intro scene, when Indy is at the bookshelf and then gets crushed by it, there is this short lag of gameplay when the crash sound is loading. And I did notice that same lag from my playthrough in your video at 4:30. That's peculiar! Then it isn't just my machine, it happened on yours too! It's been a while since I ran that game in DOS, but I seem to remember that this particular animation was more fluid back then, but I could be mistaken...

  • @terrillgoodwinejr537

    Planned sequels
After the release of the game, a story for a supposed successor in the adventure genre was conceived by Joe Pinney, Hal Barwood, Bill Stoneham, and Aric Wilmunder. Titled Indiana Jones and the Iron Phoenix, it was set after World War II and featured Nazis seeking refuge in Bolivia, trying to resurrect Adolf Hitler with the philosopher's stone. The game was in development for 15 months before it was showcased at the European Computer Trade Show.
However, when the German coordinators discovered how extensively the game dealt with Neo-Nazism, they informed LucasArts about the difficulty of marketing the game in their country. As Germany was an important overseas market for adventure games, LucasArts feared that the lower revenues would not recoup development costs, and subsequently canceled the game. The plot was later adapted into a four-part Dark Horse Comics series by Lee Marrs, published monthly from December 1994 to March 1995. In an interview, Barwood commented that the development team should have thought about the story more thoroughly beforehand, calling it insensitive and not regretting the cancellation of the title.
Another follow-up game called Indiana Jones and the Spear of Destiny was planned, which revolved around the Spear of Longinus. Development was outsourced to a small studio, but eventually stopped as LucasArts did not have experience with the supervision of external teams. Elaine Lee loosely reworked the story into another four-part comic book series, released from April to July 1995.

My problem with the first movie is this...what if Indiana Jones never got involved in the story?
The Germans would never find it, or even if they did they would still eventually have the same exact ending.
Basically his involvement brought just more death and suffering to others, for zero effect.
    Just saying.
About the game, well, this game is awesome. One of the best adventure games of all time according to most who tried it.
There are two more point and click adventure games which allowed you to use violence in action sequences.
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Blade Runner.
11:10 I assume you haven't played any Sierra adventure game then? Death is the norm there. :p
