  • Today I cut a hole in the roof of the van! This was terrifying. One wrong move and I would have had an ugly mess on my hands. Fortunately, the fan install went smooth. After the fan went in, I lined the roof with some FatMat RattleTrap, which will (hopefully) dampen some of the road noise that comes in while driving, and the sound of rain, while I'm camping.

@3:00 Jimmy, thanks for the tip about drilling out the spot welds to get rid of those seatbelt holders. I just discovered your playlist today, and I'll be watching your videos over and over as I go through the same steps starting out my camper build. I am also from Texas and bought a 2012 Ford Transit Connect XLT Premium last month that had to have been originally customized just like yours with the same interior trim, LED lamp, cargo liner, and rivet holes in the floor, but someone had already taken out the desk and chair. The previous owner was a carpenter, so it had sawdust in every nook and cranny that I have been cleaning. I have a few repairs to do to get it as fit as yours looked on day 1, which was apparently 6 years ago.

That's fantastic! I hope these videos are helpful to you. Good luck with your build. I also recommend checking out the Transit Connect Campers group on Facebook. There's a lot of good tips, tricks, and build ideas going over there.

Hey a tip I learned to make calking smooth or to make it less sticky is to put some soapy water/simplegreen/(or even spit if you have a little job) on your fingers and it allows you to smooth out the calk, without it sticking to your fingers or gloves. I like the pvc inserts to bridge the gap of the roof. Good idea. Why did you go with that fan vs a smaller hand crank style?

Thanks for the tip! I picked this fan because the design allows the vent to be open, even while it is raining outside. It supposedly will not leak water in that situation.

Fat Mat Rattle Trap. I like that name.

Have you looked at painting the inside with ceramic paint additive, seems the easy way out. I am enjoying the videos, thank you.

I hadn't considered the ceramic paint until after I did the FatMat. Most of the other van builds I have been watching are using this stuff or a similar product. I like that the FatMat is kinda spongy, so it dampens the vibration of whatever is sitting on top of it, like the sub-floor.

I may do a combination of the two.

I hate caulking. And it's so unfortunately they have to put big ridges on these roofs. I prefer Butyl tape.
Would you say the hole was exactly 14x14 . Are corners rounded? Are all these holes standard?

I used both butyl tape, and caulking. I actually had to take the fan off and redo the caulking a few months ago, because it was leaking. Guess I didn't not put enough caulk in the roof grooves. I do not remember the exact dimensions of the hole. I think they are a standard size, however. And the corners are indeed rounded.
