The refrigerators were off to the side in the 20s and 30s because they were brand new, so kitchens weren’t ready to integrate them. Far more common were ice boxes, which usually were placed near a back door (away from the rest of the kitchen) so ice men could deliver ice directly to the ice box without entering the house. As for all the green, in the 20s and 30s shades that were all called Nile green were EVERYWHERE. The discovery of King Tut’s tomb made “Egyptian” themes popular, so when pale green to jade green were marketed as “Egyptian” they dominated fashion and interior design.
thank you! i am familiar with ice boxes, but i definitely have a gap of knoweldge between 1900 and 1950, but i figured there was something up haha in my brief research, i read about egyptian being an influence to the style, that makes sense. tbh it my favourite type of green if it's that pale one haha
I'm from Miami, which Roaring Heights was heavily inspired by! I can offer a few insights. Specifically for Floridian art deco, pastel colors were incredibly popular. Pinks, mint greens, baby blues, soft yellows. I grew up in a pink art deco home. When you go elsewhere you'll see a lot more of a stark contrast in color and more drama, especially in NYC art deco, Los Angeles art deco, Las Vegas art deco. The soft and playful color palettes are definitely what solidifies the Miami vibes. There's a lot of interesting history behind Miami and its architecture, and I feel like EA did a really good job on capturing it.
thank you for the information! for episode two i will make sure I read up on specifically the miami style come to think of it, all those soft colours were in the "vintage glamour stuff" sims 4 pack, so I knew there was something to it, thanks again!
In EA defense green was a prominent color during this time period. Art Deco when I did my research was around 1920-1930s and before ww1 hit homes had the bold colors of greens and reds. Which I feel like the EA did use correctly during the builds of these houses though I do agree the color schemes are not the most pleasing to the eyes.
By the way, just to note, "Jim Pickens first appeared in Kevin's old UA-cam channel during the series "Adventures in San Andreas" beginning on the 14th of August, 2011 (a series that is now private)." Roaring Heights did not come out until December of 2013. Because Kevin uses Jim Pickens in nearly every Sims iteration he plays (1,2,3&4), not too many know that he created that character outside of the Sims.
Also, according to the wiki, "The layout and architecture of the world is based on Miami, New York, and Chicago according to SimGuruTaterTot and SimGuruBrett on The Sims 3 Live Broadcast - Roaring Heights Gameplay video. The city hall is based on Buffalo City Hall and the lighthouse is based on a lighthouse in Kálfshamarsvík, Iceland." If you ever want to experience the Sims Lore, I highly recommend (just be warned, it does capture the tragic backstories of the most iconic sims)❣
The Estate Elevated is loosely based on Norma Desmond's mansion from Sunset Boulevard. (Hell, the household is based on the film too.) And that explains the weird eccentric style of the interior a lot. In the movie, Norma's house is decorated with photos of herself when she was a famous silent film actress. The interior in general is very gaudy and screams washed-up crazy old silent film stars.
Sorry for the second comment, Bonnie and Clyde were infamous bank robbers in the early 1930s that were killed in a shootout with the police. You’re probably thinking of the movie from the 70s about them. But I’m going to have to respectfully disagree with you on the references being weak. They reference Mae West, the Marx brothers, Little Orphan Annie and so many other people and characters appropriate to the Depression Era time period that art deco was in fashion.
it was more the prose of the references i was referring to, they didn't invest in their lot and family descriptions form what I noticed so far... im sure there are lots of legitimate references, although I may not catch them
I love this world! 😍 I don't particularly agree with you about the references, there are so many cool stories. For example, the owner of the first house you've shown is Virginia Supine and she's in a relationship with Rita David-Welles, a clear reference to Virginia Woolf and Vita Sackville-West. Rita's husband is also in an extramarital relationship with a man (Roaring Heights really love the gays) who is supposed to be based on Jay Gatsby.
i don't watch movies and im not american so i will definitely not get most of the references.. however i more meant the WAY they introduce the families and houses. It seems many descriptions are like 1-2 sentences and boring. "she just moved to the big city!" and the house is like "a nice house by the beach" so for someone like me, I have NO IDEA who these people are
@@Rekowcski oh sorry I misunderstood what you meant. vintage glamour was always a favourite pack of mine and now i know why i agree... but i think with create a style we can make it happen without too much trouble... too bad EA didnt yet lol
@@Rekowcski that’s also a favorite of mine and I’m debating getting the decor to the max kit. I love to tour roaring heights when I play in that world.
I did a row of commercial lots on Ridgeline Drive in Newcrest all in art deco (well the shells, I’m still finishing them). The rest of the town is done from real houses in Seaside, Florida (the town The Truman Show was filmed in if you’re familiar). I’d love it if they’d give us an art deco town with an appropriate backdrop rather than grungetown 2.0 coming out next week
IIRC, the world is kind of based off of Miami Beach and Coney Island so if you look at the barrier island and how it connects to the bigger island that's really close to how South Beach and Miami interrelate. The color palette is pulled straight from Miami. They reference buildings from both places in the exterior architecture. The bricks are where I think the Coney Island influence is coming in. Art Deco in NY, you're more likely to see brick buildings because it was a building material they had in abundance. (Also given that we don't have hurricanes or earthquakes it's a really good safe choice)
@@Rekowcski Also I noticed that a lot of the design decisions you were objecting to as not being Art Deco were totally 30s! I was more upset about the lack of radios. Every house would've had 1 in the living room and I think it's a missed opportunity to have had a couple 30s radios. I'm not sure there's any design school at play with the fridge placement, but having lived in apartments from that era, the fridge is often separate like that.
I can't believe that EA did one sims 4 "club" basement, my jaw dropped 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I am really curious about the sim that lives there now. I kinda wish that I had this reaction playing the game because of my play style I would end playing this sim and finding out that. Great video as always, I like how you research the styles of houses before because I don't know anything about that. And I don't care about really long videos, I love it.
my reaction was legitimate, i had NO IDEA, i was going to just confirm there was no basement, then I was going to complain about the name... but then i found it she wants to be a master criminal, I didn't read too much into the family and lot descriptions, but they were quite "sims 4" shallow... generic stories "she left her crazy life and came to roaring heights!" .... ok what else???? and the lot descriptions are like "a nice house by the beach" LOL
@@Rekowcski my experience playing entire worlds in rotation playstyle (sims 2 style) says that the family bios are complementary to the sims bios (unfortunately some store words don't have individual sims bios!), the sims traits, the initial sims relations/friendships/lovers, their clothes and the stuff they have in their houses/individual inventories. We can badmouth ea all day long, but one thing they did well in sims 3 was use objects to tell stories, the way some objects are in some lots are storytelling artifacts.
i completely agree... i prefer playing the sims 2 (rotational style) but when i play the worlds in the sims 3 i just bounce around to whoever I want so i definitely miss some things or details
This is my absolute favorite Sims 3 world. My only complaint is exactly what you showed - it's absolutely necessary to redo the interiors. And I seriously hate building/buying. Like, I spent hours trying to find custom Art Deco homes just to avoid it 😂 Even given all that, my favorite thing is that they built lore into almost every single pre-made sim's homes. That one with the dungeon - the furniture store can be construed as her "front", since the owner, Donna Spinelli, is a mob boss. She's a spoof on the mob boss Juanita Spinelli. Or like you saw in Beachfront Residence, the occupant is Virginia Supine, who is referencing the author Virginia Woolf. Hence the crazy amount of bookcases, lol. But even her living on the beach is significant, since in a darker turn, Virginia Woolf unalived herself by drowning herself in the river behind her house. So while they're ugly as sin, if you look up who they're referencing, you'll see why they made some of the more...interesting choices. I mean, nothing excuses EA builds, lol. But I've never seen them put that much love into the lore as I saw in Roaring Heights.
Roaring Heights is my favorite EA world, I almost always build or adapt the buildings anyway, or build something myself. I think the world itself is so beautiful. And I love your humor, the video was entertaining again. Thank you
Thank you theresa! I agree, I tend to choose store worlds for playing in the last year, and RH is one of my favourites. If someone has an ugly bathroom I can always renovate it, but at least the exteriors are colourful and funky.
I think hidden secret is supposed to be an apartment on top of a department store (mall). That’s what it looks like to me. I mean, back then you get a majority of your things like furniture, clothes, jewelry etc and department stores and places like macys, sears, JCPenney and all that
I started looking through this world at the houses again. You're review is great. Honestly though it make a really fun interior design career world as it allows for me to correct all the dumb and ugly things and make my Sim money while doing so.
Might just be me. But embellished excess looks to be heavily inspired by Nora Desmond’s mansion from the movie, Sunset Boulevard. Despite that movie actually taking place during the 50’s, and roaring heights is a 20s themed world.
i never bought this world because the aesthetic didn't interest me but some of these houses make me want to... ahem... put on my pirate hat and try the world out for myself
make sure you seek out the boardwalk! it will be the grand finale and i actually enjoy it speaking of pirate hats... can we skip barnacle bay? I dont want to pay $20 for the calientes and ugly boots
Bonnie and Clyde were a criminal couple. They used to travel arround the US with their gang during the great depression period. Amazing reference EA have made. It also has a lot in common with TS3 world. 😆😆😆
I like the hidden secret house. My first Sims game was Sims Freeplay and that game has a hidden secret house. I always thought it was just a little bit funny but never considered it being a money making scheme. Maybe I'm too innocent for the Sims? Nah. So Bonnie and Clyde were bank robbers during the Great Depression. They wouldn't have lived in a house that nice as they were on the run from the FBI until they were captured and executed.I agree its not a great "lore" choice. its more of here's two names from the 1930's, unless of course they're both criminals.
@@Rekowcski Yea... I actually have to physically hold myself back from redoing every nad interior/making a better outside all at once in a new save file Because I know it will be _a lot_ to do and I will lose my desire to play in the world But I did make a cute pink and blue bakery for the world! I think it was what the world was sorely lacking
I love art deco and this world is so big and so unique. I was surprised at how pretty the outside of the houses looked but disappointed with interiors so I agree with your ratings completely. (I'm having so much fun working my way through all your videos). ☺
I love your videos! We have so many opinions in common, really, I always give my note for the house before u and a lot of times is the same of yours hahaha! Btw you missed the basement in the Bonnie and Clyde house, there was a room with a stair in the hallway, proabably there's stolen stuff there.
Actually, this is not before Jim Pickens, since the Sims 3 version of Jim Pickens was first introduced in 2012 and Roaring Heights came out in 2013. So it might actually be a direct reference :D
This might explain some of their odd choices for colors a bit but I still feel like they executed wrong. I googled Art Deco colour schemes: The colors of the art deco period are striking and bold. Colors are often paired or punctuated with high-shine silver, chrome, or black accents. Favorite colors of the era include bright and deep yellows, reds, greens, blues, and pinks.
Drinking game: Take a shot each time the words 'art deco' are spoken. Not dissing you at all, mate, I absolutely loved the video. Sims 3 is my lifeblood.
In response to 12:04 : Football, or "soccer" for the Americans, was invented all the way back in Ancient Rome, but the current version of football we play today became a thing in the Victorian era, in the 1860s to be precise. table football, or "foosball" as Rekowcski calls it, was invented in 1921. The more you know.
So I know this is old, I still have to say this. First, as you complain about it a lot (which I get), I think they color the bathrooms just because they can. To show that it can be done and because bathrooms most of the time are just boring, so my guess they are trying to spice it up a bit. Also, I know 'green' bathrooms was a real thing 20 some odd years ago. Otherwise, I don't understand their choices either. However, I have to say that I hate that we have to "duck down" to see inside the houses in Roaring Heights. I'm used to zooming out a lot and I hate that I lose the house when I do. This means I don't play those lots at all, lol. Though I'm tempted to use that "Hidden Secret" lot now. OH! And I can't get mad about the "bathroom" sink in the kitchen. I do it all the time to save money, its cheap and sometimes every little bit counts. Though I do "upgrade" to a kitchen sink once they get a bit of cash.
Does anyone else want to scream at the screen when he doesn't notice the basement and doesn't check it out? :D the worst one was with the Midnight Hollow when he didn't get to see the underground lab / prison which was the best part of the house.
I feel like things may get better in subsequent parts. If not oh well… still love Roaring heights though. Miami is the only American city I’ve ever visited.
Hey hey hey, i bought roaring heights and never played in it because it has a very not generic tragicomedic vibe, it’s too niche I think. But I love Art Deco, my fave history moment I think
I think there were going for a miami art deco Aspecially along the beach front that why there alot of colour but then again it is ea so don't wanna give then to much credit 😄
i am from toronto and used to go to new york sometimes, and that's the only kinds i've seen in real life... lots of metals, greys.. the colours are in the signs and lights but you're probably right, everything EA does is particularly american so florida beach sounds right
Im playing this world rn, it’s kinda laggy ngl. Noticed a lot of routing issues with many lots. One for example where wall mirrors randomly do not work at all and cause routing issues when they try to use them.
@@Rekowcski i couldnt find a fixed roaring heights. Not sure if ellacharmed did one. I do believe a lot of the routing errors comes from the lots themselves so that’s something one needs to like track down and fix as they notice the issues. Though I do notice routing lag during like 7-8 in the morning etc when a lot of sims try to route to work so probably the world lot is poorly done as well.
@@ViceCityExtra that's a good idea... i notice that if you have NRaas overwatch installed, I can spot which sim has the routing problems and track it down to their home or job usually
@@Rekowcski haha I will have to check that out. I downloaded the festival lot for roaring heights and one of the issues with that lot is that they put down chairs for the campfires in winter season which means that in other seasons it wont spawn chairs when used so sims will get routing errors trying to use the campfire
I owe the physical copy of Roaring Heights ... But with unredeemed Code. Should I ask EA to get it ? My mother purchased it for me when I fall ill, and When I recovered It was already expired. I have never experienced this expansion pack, leaving my mom's money being wasted.

(Also given that we don't have hurricanes or earthquakes it's a really good safe choice)
yes im from toronto, and visited new york a lot so my recollection of art deco is like the chrysler building style and grey/metal movie theatres
And I don't care about really long videos, I love it.
my reaction was legitimate, i had NO IDEA, i was going to just confirm there was no basement, then I was going to complain about the name... but then i found it
she wants to be a master criminal, I didn't read too much into the family and lot descriptions, but they were quite "sims 4" shallow... generic stories "she left her crazy life and came to roaring heights!" .... ok what else???? and the lot descriptions are like "a nice house by the beach" LOL
I'm crying over the green slander
You will find it in every episode hahah
Did that last house also have a secret room? It looked like their was a ladder behind the staircase
apparently its just a basement to house stolen goods... unfortunately not another dungeon ):
This is my absolute favorite Sims 3 world. My only complaint is exactly what you showed - it's absolutely necessary to redo the interiors. And I seriously hate building/buying. Like, I spent hours trying to find custom Art Deco homes just to avoid it 😂
Even given all that, my favorite thing is that they built lore into almost every single pre-made sim's homes.
25:31 is there a hidden prison in the basement too? I see a ladder 🕵️
Idk if they are considered art deco but I kind of love the red kitchens!
well then youll be right at home in roaring heights haha
I think hidden secret is supposed to be an apartment on top of a department store (mall). That’s what it looks like to me. I mean, back then you get a majority of your things like furniture, clothes, jewelry etc and department stores and places like macys, sears, JCPenney and all that
This is my fav neighborhood tbh, the look is great I just wish it was a bit bigger! It’s hard to add more lots, but it’s style is so unique and fun
The bathroom and kitchen of Cozy Comfort makes me remember of the Tragic Clown, that is not comfort or cozy in my opinion
cozy comfort was a complete disaster, but that bathroom and kitchen was on another level
Sunset Boulevard is one of my favourite movies... IM READY FOR MY CLOSE UP haha
i never bought this world because the aesthetic didn't interest me but some of these houses make me want to... ahem... put on my pirate hat and try the world out for myself
make sure you seek out the boardwalk! it will be the grand finale and i actually enjoy it
speaking of pirate hats... can we skip barnacle bay? I dont want to pay $20 for the calientes and ugly boots
@@Rekowcski fine by me, i forgot barnacle bay existed until you said that. lol
Omg I’ve played in Roaring Heights a bunch and never noticed the furniture store build. It’s cute
I want to "fix" a few of these lots by making them apartments, but with the furniture store a public area
They wouldn't have lived in a house that nice as they were on the run from the FBI until they were captured and executed.I agree its not a great "lore" choice. its more of here's two names from the 1930's, unless of course they're both criminals.
i think there;s a basement for stolen stuff in their house
there absolutely is, i missed it. Most houses didnt have basements so i simply didnt see it :x
According to Google, foosball was invented in 1921. So it checks out 🤔 because there is NOTHING I hate more than historical inaccuracies lol
yESSS NEW VIDEO! im sucker for the art deco architecture
Btw, good video as always
thank you! hope you're having a better week
Ah the Picard house
I tried to save it. But I just ended up bulldozing it and redoing it. But kept the general vibe of the outside
Usually EA is very good at doing the inside OR outside... Never both lol
@@Rekowcski Yea... I actually have to physically hold myself back from redoing every nad interior/making a better outside all at once in a new save file
Because I know it will be _a lot_ to do and I will lose my desire to play in the world
But I did make a cute pink and blue bakery for the world! I think it was what the world was sorely lacking
Imagine EA doing a Jim Pickens inspired EP 🤣🤣
they would screw it up these days lol
@@Rekowcski Probably 🤣
I loved that Estate Elevated! The style was very much on point, and it may have been a 10 in my book if I was being generous!
I googled Art Deco colour schemes:
The colors of the art deco period are striking and bold. Colors are often paired or punctuated with high-shine silver, chrome, or black accents. Favorite colors of the era include bright and deep yellows, reds, greens, blues, and pinks.
8:14 OH MY GOD THAT IS A LOT OF PLANTS
i didnt mention it, but they certainly love their 7 foot trees and bookcases all over every house
I wish we could get a world like this in the Sims 4 🙁
The mantra of every sims 4 player haha
I wanted to see the basement in Humble Home 😭 lmao
Estate Elevated is my fave build inside and out
Roaring heights beautiful world and I love the boardwalk of this world.
i love going on the smaller blue roller coaster with my sims on dates, it's great for screen shots!
@@Rekowcski Yes, one way to have great dates and pictures. I add the carousel on it so sims can really enjoy it and take pictures too.
I loved the colorful kitchen and toilet!
We all have bold colours that we enjoy haha
Oh yeah! And I hoped until the very last seconds that he would notice, but no... He is sometimes so inattentive...
yes I was thinking of playing around with that and seeing what was possible
@@Rekowcski, excellent!
In general, you put forth such effort in each video that it is admirable. Really well done!
Oh my gosh I’m sorry I’m late lol I’m ready for some Rec sass in this one! 😂😂😂
it's my fault, i just hammered it out so i thought i may as well post it!
@@Rekowcski nah it’s fine, I was just being funny lol 😂
I feel like things may get better in subsequent parts. If not oh well… still love Roaring heights though. Miami is the only American city I’ve ever visited.
i've never been to Miami, but I have been to palm springs (which was the inspiration for lucky palms), and I have a soft spot for it haha
Hey hey hey, i bought roaring heights and never played in it because it has a very not generic tragicomedic vibe, it’s too niche I think. But I love Art Deco, my fave history moment I think
Oh the first house wallpaper is art nouveau or Liberty, Art Deco? Not at all
i love the world its self, i kind of like the unique worlds... for example Lunar Lakes is right up my alley :x
You have not seen the worst yet! Love your comments.
oh no! now im terrified to do the next episode XD
“It’s cheap and easy, just like 20 year old me.” *Also 29 year old me whoops*
I don’t even like woohoo I just like the attention haha
@@Rekowcski Nice that made me laugh!
my biggest grudge against Roaring Heights is FAKE APARTMENTS
I totally agree, I always wanted to make them real with the late nite debug markers but I'm too lazy 😭
I think there were going for a miami art deco Aspecially along the beach front that why there alot of colour but then again it is ea so don't wanna give then to much credit 😄
i am from toronto and used to go to new york sometimes, and that's the only kinds i've seen in real life... lots of metals, greys.. the colours are in the signs and lights
but you're probably right, everything EA does is particularly american so florida beach sounds right
Yes, finally my favorite city! 👍
Im playing this world rn, it’s kinda laggy ngl. Noticed a lot of routing issues with many lots. One for example where wall mirrors randomly do not work at all and cause routing issues when they try to use them.
i think there is a fixed version to correct this... i know installing a fixed isla paradiso really helped me run that world
@@Rekowcski i couldnt find a fixed roaring heights.
@@ViceCityExtra that's a good idea... i notice that if you have NRaas overwatch installed, I can spot which sim has the routing problems and track it down to their home or job usually
but sometimes they wander up a mountain and get stuck haha
@@Rekowcski haha I will have to check that out. I downloaded the festival lot for roaring heights and one of the issues with that lot is that they put down chairs for the campfires in winter season which means that in other seasons it wont spawn chairs when used so sims will get routing errors trying to use the campfire
I owe the physical copy of Roaring Heights ... But with unredeemed Code. Should I ask EA to get it ? My mother purchased it for me when I fall ill, and When I recovered It was already expired. I have never experienced this expansion pack, leaving my mom's money being wasted.
EA customer support has helped me with similar problems... You should reach out and contact them I think.
it's giving 70's beach town does roaring 20s
it's also giving me a headache XD
Hi all :) do you think would be good idea to play Heroes of Might 3 in Sims 3? :)
Never knew what Art Deco really looked like, but based off these EA builds, not a fan of the style :/
Also, didn't even know this world existed.
ive noticed it is a really love or hate style for people
miami beach art deco > nyc and la art deco
i don't disagree with that statement... i love the colours!
@@Rekowcski makes everything wayyyy more fun and lively

I think I want this World! It's not bad at all 😀
I’m going back to sims 3
It’s the best place to be!

I never heard of this world. What does it come with?
Also first video I watched from you but i am so intrigued. ❤️
This world is a (sold separately) base game world from the sims 3 store
ehy do all youtubers ask for a like BEFORE the video even starts?
You can just give me a dislike then, every comment and interaction boosts my channel! X
can u do lunar lakes? its stunning
That’s the one I’m most excited for!
I'm really enjoying this world. I love how close the buildings are. It feels like an actual city 🌇. Also I love art-deco architecture but hate art deco interiors (too overbearing) so I've been gutting my current starter home of all trace of it 🏗

I don't like the floorplans in this world
