It’s a fantastic sketch, but it’s not sarcasm, it’s a satire on the misogyny of the past. It’s actually a really well-observed, accurate depiction of this type of ‘self improvement’ public information film. Glad you loved it though.
Satire is comical exaggeration of something an "accurate depiction" would be a documentary. I dont think at any point in our history people ever thought Queen Boadicea, Queen Elizebeth I or Queen Victoria were dipsey and unintelligent, in fact they have always been held upon a pedicel, above most Kings, and their rule has always been seen as a "Golden age". despite the relentless and deeply decisive propaganda, by those with a view to subversion and global enslavement of humanity, this country is not and has Never been 5exist !
You girls make me proud to be British and restore my faith in humanity. I think our youth have been too heavily influenced by American sensitivity and it is so refreshing to see 2 young women laughing about a joke while taking zero offence to it. This is what society needs moving forward. The ability to separate harmless fun from hurtfully intended abuse. Americans should watch these two and learn, to help you stop draining the rest of us with your whining!

The funniest aspect of this sketch to me is that Harry Enfield's wife's contribution to the conversation is justified with reasoning whereas his is just, "I think it should".
Refreshing to see normal youngsters take comedy how it was meant instead of going off on some faux outrage of perceived injustices we are being conditioned to accept as being "normal" Thus gives me encouragement that maybe our civilization is not lost after all.

It’s a brilliant parody of old public information films, rendered with brilliant attention to detail (you should look at some genuine Pathé newsreels from the 1940s and 50s). They use this method as a perfect vehicle to talk about entrenched misogyny of the past, which still has echoes with many institutionalised views of today. And it’s immaculately performed as you point out - the scowls on Harry and Paul’s faces are priceless. Great stuff.

I was just pointing out that sarcasm and satire are one and the same thing in many cases. And if you look up sarcasm it includes satire too. As for Harry Sketch they were indeed taking the piss. This is a satirical send up of the public information films they used to show in cinemas in the 1930s/40s and not a million miles away from the attitudes of the time, which is a part of why they are so funny. This is from The Harry Enfield show from the 90s, he did loads of these on his sketch show, usually under the heading of Mr Cholmondley-Warner, Enfield played his man servant Grayson. Loads of them are on UA-cam, the conjugal rights and diseases of the mind are probably my two favourites.
There’s a great clip of Harry’s showing an ‘old’ lip of football players. Nowadays they hug each other when a goal is scored, in the 1930s/40s this just wasn’t the done thing! It’s very funny

If you don't know "Mystery Science Theatre 3000" (MST3K), they essentially created the "riffing/reaction" genre in the late '80s/early '90s, and they often covered actual "public service" film shorts from the '50s and thereabouts, when there was an explosion of same as film-strip tech became accessible to many classrooms. Honestly, if anything, the satire created here is frequently *less* ridiculous than the genuine "advice" given to schoolkids at the time. It's worth seeing, if only to realize how silly the moral panics of the day were, especially as a lot of them are being trotted-out again today by the right-wing, and for the same destructive, bigoted purposes.

There was some discussion about a serious matter concerning the school and everybody was contributing except one lady who sat there looking puzzled. Our hostess. Trisha, tried to bring her in to the conversation: "Sandra, you're looking concerned, what do you think?" "Well," came the reply, "I'm sure it's all very interesting but we've just got a labrador puppy and we just can't THINK what to call her!" As Trish said later, the antithesis of knowing your limits!
The opening wasn't sarcasm. It was a direct imitation of the government's public information films of the 50s and 60s. This is the problem with satire - in order to appreciate it fully, you need to be familiar with what is being satirized, otherwise the humour is lost.
This was first screened on BBC1 in the early 90's, i think most of my year watched it, because 'women know your limits' became a school catchphrase for the next few years, including from the girls lol.

It ends with an unsuspecting young woman running down a street (the fool) with two workmen holding a large plate of glass about to turn a corner onto the street where the woman is running. Then he screen goes blank...but you can imagine what was about to happen. Anyway, I think this Enfield skit was satirising that sort of film and attitudes about women in the 1930s.

When i was a kid and a black and white movie was on TV i used to think that the entire world was black and white in the days those movies were made, and the world became colourful when colour TV was invented.
What's great is that Britian did indeed go back on the gold standard in the 20s and the high value of the pound was disastrous for British exports. Daphne was completely correct!
Just of a point of subtlety, the "woman without limits" was completely right. It's generally believed that reverting to the gold standard, would have been very damaging to the economy.

In case it is not clear this is from the 90's not the 40's & the whole point was that it has to be in black & white in order to be am effective spoof of a 1940's public information film, same goes for the exaggerated RP accents & the grainy film & skips. I recently saw a 40's public information film & i swear the guy in it must have been the inspiration for Mr. Chumondley ( who actually is not in this particular sketch ), please check out the Driving sketch, the sex education, & and also L is for Labour, absolute comic genius as well as nailing it just as this does !
Absolutely brilliant you saw that its comedy and had a good laugh, i was in my teens when Harry Enfield and Chums was on, it would never get aired on tv today, despite it highlighting the obsurdity of how women were supposed to behave in certain environments and time periods.
You need to see diseases of the mind and conjugal rights. Harry enfield and chums was fantastic. It's a shame we don't have that level of comady these days.
I remember watching this when it came out in the 80s. Even then through humour it made us think about what we thought. It did a lot for equal rights at the time in a secret but well founded way.

I’ve seen young American women react to this sketch and it’s not taken so well, you got it as it’s intended. There are some who thought it was really from the Thirties and they scowl just like Paul Whitehouse.
Imagine my Beitish Mum’s surprise when she moved to the US in the early 50s.that this was the expectation for women at parties. She and my Dad left more than one dinner party after a male party goer started yelling at her.

I think the word is irony... a shade subtler than sarcasm. The beginning music sets the tone here as it was the theme tune to Music While You Work, from BBC Radio, Light Programme in 1940s when as part of total war initiative women worked in factories replacing their men off at war. And radio was broadcast over tannoy to keep spirits up.
Oh my god, please check out Brass Eye, they did some absolutely scorching comedies based on controversial topics, done in the style of rolling 24 hour news. The absolute pinnacle was "Paedogeddon", which was about media frenzy, hypocrisy and mob culture, and after it aired, the newspapers that decried it performed their part perfectly - "the Star article was positioned adjacent to an article about the developing bust of 15-year-old singer Charlotte Church, and that the Mail's coverage was preceded by "close-ups" of the "bikini princesses" Beatrice and Eugenie, who were 12 and 11 at the time."
So pleased you young'uns discovered and enjoyed Harry Enfield. He has other great scetches: "Harry Enfield very important man" (2 different scetches) is IMO a killer.

Have a look at the Harry Enfield sketches 'I saw you Coming'. There are about 6 of them where he's an antique dealer in London, very funny and I'm told very true to life today.

Harry Enfield is a comedy genius...he gets the characters spot on and the script is clever ironic and just plain funny. Brilliant.

When i was a kid and a black and white movie was on TV i used to think that the entire world was black and white in the days those movies were made, and the world became colourful when colour TV was invented.
What's great is that Britian did indeed go back on the gold standard in the 20s and the high value of the pound was disastrous for British exports. Daphne was completely correct!
Just of a point of subtlety, the "woman without limits" was completely right. It's generally believed that reverting to the gold standard, would have been very damaging to the economy.

Great to see 2 people reacting naturally to comedy....if we can't laugh at ourselves, our nationality, sex, idiosyncrasies etc. etc.....we're all doomed! Anybody and anything should be a subject for comedy!
And they are? What you're worried about is being held accountable for what you choose to say. That's not "freedom of speech"; that's you wanting to restrict everyone else's freedom of speech so that you might have "freedom from criticism".
If you haven't thought-through a joke, it's probably not funny, and you probably shouldn't waste everyone's time with it. If you're going to demand the attention of others, at least put in the effort to make it worth their while.

Celebrity worship is part of the problem - 'oh, the Hollywood elites don't like my joke about Transgender people, so it must be wrong of me to tell it ...'. No, it's not. If it's funny, it's funny. End of. That is after all the goal of comedy is it not 😉. The world would be a barren place if we removed everything that might p*ss somebody off. Look for a British mini series "A very British scandal". It shows how women were treated 60 years ago in UK.

In case it is not clear this is from the 90's not the 40's & the whole point was that it has to be in black & white in order to be am effective spoof of a 1940's public information film, same goes for the exaggerated RP accents & the grainy film & skips. I recently saw a 40's public information film & i swear the guy in it must have been the inspiration for Mr. Chumondley ( who actually is not in this particular sketch ), please check out the Driving sketch, the sex education, & and also L is for Labour, absolute comic genius as well as nailing it just as this does !
As drama students you might recognise the "venomous harridan" in the front as a BAFTA and Cannes award-winning actress. :D
Absolutely brilliant you saw that its comedy and had a good laugh, i was in my teens when Harry Enfield and Chums was on, it would never get aired on tv today, despite it highlighting the obsurdity of how women were supposed to behave in certain environments and time periods.

You need to see diseases of the mind and conjugal rights. Harry enfield and chums was fantastic. It's a shame we don't have that level of comady these days.
I remember watching this when it came out in the 80s. Even then through humour it made us think about what we thought. It did a lot for equal rights at the time in a secret but well founded way.

Just as hilarious now as it was when first aired about 30 years ago!!! Enfield did a whole series of these pseudo public info films, genius!! I strongly recommend that you look up the "suits you sir" series of skits on mens outfitters assistants from The Fast Show!! You will be destroyed by laughter!!!
I’ve seen young American women react to this sketch and it’s not taken so well, you got it as it’s intended. There are some who thought it was really from the Thirties and they scowl just like Paul Whitehouse.
Imagine my Beitish Mum’s surprise when she moved to the US in the early 50s.that this was the expectation for women at parties. She and my Dad left more than one dinner party after a male party goer started yelling at her.
The absolute best thing about your reaction is you can understand this is a sketch from the 90s taking the piss out of life in the 40s and instead of a typical ultra defensive woke reaction you get the humour and just laugh. Good for you! 👌🏻
I don't think that "wokeness" is as much of a problem as people make it out to be, where do you encounter enough woke people for it to be typical?

Harry does a set of great sketches as a teenage boy well worth looking out for them.
These are a parody of public information films from the 40s and 50s but didn't stop there and came back as spine chillin' cartoons in the 70's called Charlie says... lol
I think the word is irony... a shade subtler than sarcasm.
The beginning music sets the tone here as it was the theme tune to Music While You Work, from BBC Radio, Light Programme in 1940s when as part of total war initiative women worked in factories replacing their men off at war. And radio was broadcast over tannoy to keep spirits up.
British documentaries are always so informative.

Oh my god, please check out Brass Eye, they did some absolutely scorching comedies based on controversial topics, done in the style of rolling 24 hour news. The absolute pinnacle was "Paedogeddon", which was about media frenzy, hypocrisy and mob culture, and after it aired, the newspapers that decried it performed their part perfectly - "the Star article was positioned adjacent to an article about the developing bust of 15-year-old singer Charlotte Church, and that the Mail's coverage was preceded by "close-ups" of the "bikini princesses" Beatrice and Eugenie, who were 12 and 11 at the time."
This sketch is an excellence warning about wokeism. Time for women to know their place and limits.

Have a look at the Harry Enfield sketches 'I saw you Coming'. There are about 6 of them where he's an antique dealer in London, very funny and I'm told very true to life today.
