Snowmobilers seen speeding on Wisconsin interstate during snowstorm

- Police are asking the public for information to help identify people seen in video driving snowmobiles on the interstate in Kenosha County during this weekend’s snowstorm.
The video was taken over the weekend on I-94/41 in Kenosha County. cbs58.com/news...
They were the safest travelers on that interstate. A snowmobile has more control on snow packed road than an automobile. An automobile can easily lose control.
I live in Alaska, and cops almost always turn a blind eye to that kind of stuff for that very reason.
Obviously people that have never ridden sleds have no idea that a snowmobile is waaaaaaayyyyyyyy safer on the snow than any vehicle is... we have carbide tipped studs for traction and carbides for steering...

The snowmobiles are the safest in the highway at that point. And how is it unsafe for a snowmobile in the winter but not for a motorcycle in the summer!

Ya law enforcement is outraged about Snowmachines on the interstate ok , have you figured out who set businesses on fire in Kenosha last year that's something you should investigate, couple snowmachines on 94 in a blizzard ya ok.

Considering what it cost to register a snowmobile in Wisconsin and the trail pass cost $200 dollars is a slap on the wrist. And yes always wanted to do that. Driving home from Milwaukee to north of Green Bay in a snow storm this spring I saw four cars in the ditch and had one idiot go through the middle of the road and almost hit me head on.
As a teenager, I was certain snowmobiles were designed to give bored cops something to chase...
A snowmachine (snowmobile for some other people) is way more safe on snow packed roads then your sedan. Most everyone where I live know that, even the cops. Hell, they rarely ever hassle you for it unless your speeding, driving recklessly, or to add charges to illegal things you’re already doing. Unless they’re speeding or driving like idiots, don’t arrest or fine them. I know for a fact y’all wouldn’t care if a motorcyclist was riding on a snowy freeway.

the snowmobiles are safer than the cars in those conditions
there are also laws that say that if your unable to travel the roadway safely with a normal vehicle, you can use other vehicles that may be safer, this means you can LEGALLY drive a snowmobile in a roadway covered in snow, but its a little more iffy on the freeway due to the fact that its a freeway as well as those roads usually are the first ones to be cleared, but it still should pass fine.
The only stipulation is that the vehicle needs to have working front and tail lights of some kind, and you need to fallow normal road laws such as speed limits and use hand signals

Dawg it’s harmless fun they could be doing a lot worse plus they did it during a snowstorm because they knew nobody would really be ours so I think they did in the safest conditions

Snowmobiles were designed exactly for this reason, cars have less control in ice and snow conditions as most don't have the appropriate tyres and also carry more people with a higher chance of more getting injured, people just be annoyed that they don't use common sense or ingenuity in such situations and dispise those who are crafty minded

Retired cop of 27 years here my imput. The conditions on the road looked bad. Maybe cars should not have been on the road. The snowmobiles weaving in and out of traffic didn't look good. I think the snowmobiles on the side or median shouldn't be a problem espically if you are just are getting from one place to another if the roads are covered. I think being on the interstate is DANGEROUS because idiots in cars going too fast can loose control, and kill a snowmobile rider. People are shocked because it isn't something they see everyday. They allow motorcycles on interstates, and these people die everyday. If anyone is creating danger it's the cars and trucks loosing control. Drive on an interstate during snowing weather. Look at all the cars in the ditch and accidents.

I'm from birch run Michigan and we don't get big snow storm very often that allow us to ride roads but when we did we would ride thru town and city's. Cops absolutely hated us being on roads so if we did see cops we would buzz up down in front of them. We were from small country town so we rode in group anywhere 5 to 15 of us. Riding all the farm fields and rivers when they did freeze was fun but we NEVER turned down chances to run the roads. Usually no cars out and we know all the roads and knowing theirs no hidden stumps , ditches, dips, bumps hidden under snow we always hammered down the roads It's so much fun.
In my you can legally ride the roads in a state of emergency
well crap tell the people that have 2 wheel drive cars not to drive in more than 2 inches of snow because all they do is get stuck and cause traffic problems the snowmobile is called a snowmobile for a reason and yes they do have better control on the snow than any vehicle GET OVER IT

So much safer then any car or truck on a snowy road. Pop some side mirrors and indicators on them, a helmet and follow the speed limit, they should absolutely be allowed on the roads.

Heck, I would actually feel safer driving these during harsh Wisconsin winters then my own 4x4 suv. If we changed the law that allowed them on the roads during snow covered road conditions, I would buy one in a instant.
Use it when roads are packed with snow. Especially since I never drive 90, these side/country roads do not get plowed in time.
Plus I'd rather have snowmobiles on snowy roads then the RWD trucks that are sliding all over the place.

they're legal in Idaho. I think Arizona you can make it street legal. most states don't allow them on public roads because they have no blinkers or and the exhaust is rated for offroad. and most snowmobiles are 2 strokes so you couldn't even fill up at a gas station unless you brought a bottle of 2 stroke oil

I'm not from this state, why is this dangerous? Snowmobile on a snow covered hwy in the middle of a snow storm. Most vehicles can't stay on the road why would a vehicle that are built for snow be dangerous? They looked in control. I get normal times when it's normal conditions but, would they be dangerous to anyone? The are moving like motorcycles on the hwy in those conditions?
Honestly cars on snow are way more dangerous then this. I live here and it is illegal, but not unsafe, as snowmobiles are made FOR SNOW. I ride on my back road and in the ditches when ever we get a good amount of snow, and have never had any safety issues, besides maybe getting stuck once or twice a year

I tell you what, I’ll take 2 skis & a studded snowmobile track over 4 Wheel Drive/All Wheel Drive any day of the week. Cars are not built for snow & ice, snowmobiles are. The only danger I see concerning sleds is a car or semi possibly losing control & taking a sled out. Apart from that, those sleds are the safest machines on that snow/ice covered interstate. If they’re riding around the speed limit & not riding recklessly, just leave them alone. Sleds are only illegal on the interstate because of their exhaust, they have no plate, & they have no blinkers. These people in this video don’t have a clue as to what they’re talking about. The most unsafe thing I saw in this video was the person recording on their phone, in their car, in a snowstorm. Talk about hypocrisy.

The sleds the safest person there. If theres enough snow on a highway for a sled, you shouldnt be taking your corolla down it. If anythjng the sledders are being the safest, they chose the fastest and most maneuverable vehicle for the conditions. Only reason its being labelled as reckless and dangerous is becaue of legislation and lack of nuance.
As fun as it looked, it was kinda stupid. We ride on town roads during heavy snow, but we've rescued folks that were stuck also.
