    I did something very similar in my Honda CRV. After a few trips I realized that accessing the storage underneath was cumbersome once the bedding/mattress was added. Also, I built it so the front seats were pushed forward to expand platform for sleeping. This meant I could not easily get in the driver's seat to make a quick exit or drive to a bathroom in the night. Both have happened. Hope youre having fun in yours!

    • @ryanfields4146
      @ryanfields4146  4 роки тому +1

      Indeed! We thought about accessing the storage underneath a lot before committing to the design we had. The current configuration allows us to easily get at the storage from either side door (but maybe still limits the size of object/cooler that can be put underneath.) We too have to push our seats all the way forward to flip down our headboard and sleep. Since we only have to move the hinged headboard, it is fairly quick for us to flip that back, adjust the seats and drive away. We are looking forward to eventually having a bigger vehicle that can have a more permanent setup

    • @ryanfields4146
      @ryanfields4146  4 роки тому +2

      You bet! I think the plywood was 7/16 (or even 1/2in). That's fine for all the support pieces, but if I could do it again, I'd use thicker wood for the bed part. At least better quality- we basically got the cheapest stuff at home Depot which warped a bit after cutting. It has not been a big deal though. I might do a follow-up video to go over measurements of the pieces. Good luck!

I am replacing the single spine in the center of your design with two off-center spines to accommodate the console I have in between my two front seats and provide a little more stability for the head board. • @ryanfields4146
      @ryanfields4146  3 роки тому +3

      I think out priority when building was to first start with lots of storage space underneath - and we've kept in mind the possibility of lowering the height later on. As is, the current spacing allows us to slip in/out a small cooler and the space for our gear is pretty nice. But... we can't sit up inside, and it's a little bit of a scramble getting in (I demo getting inside in the 'pt4 Oregon' video). We may still lower the height of the bed eventually to have more headspace

    Hello, I've been checking out the designs, how do you guys secure the headboard portion? If i'm not mistaken, the front car seats have to be pushed to the front so that there's enough space. So how do you configure the headboard when driving and sleeping?

    • @ryanfields4146
      @ryanfields4146  4 роки тому +1

      When driving, the. headboard flips to the back and lays flat. We can then slide our seats most of the way back and drive normally (I think I have to sit just a tiny bit closer to the steering wheel than I normally would). When we are parked for the night, we slide the seats all the way to the front, and generally tilt the seats most of the way forward. The board then flips over and rests on the back of the seats. We like to have the seats adjusted so that the headboard had just a little bit of an angle.

    • @Evilj82
      @Evilj82 4 роки тому

      @@ryanfields4146 ah ok, so it’s like a hinge that flips over. I’m guessing it doesn’t need support from the bottom side (so it doesn’t break off?) , thanks for your reply. I just bought a preowned manual Honda Fit and am looking to do something similar .

    • @ryanfields4146
      @ryanfields4146  4 роки тому +1

      @@Evilj82 Yes, the headboard is just attached with hinges. We always have it resting a little bit on the back of the car seats, so have not worried about it breaking. We also only ever put the weight of our heads while sleeping on the headboard, so the hinges might have been enough to support that fine

  • @michaelyero148
    @michaelyero148 4 роки тому +1

    Are the hinges meant to make this where you can take it in and out? Or is this pretty much semi-permanent?

    • @ryanfields4146
      @ryanfields4146  4 роки тому

      I don't think I did a good job of showing it in any of the videos but we have two different hinge types. The first are permanent between the headboard and mid-piece allowing the headboard to fold down and easily take out. Then we put in a different hinge type (you can sort of see in in my second video) that lets the middle and back pieces clip together when it is in the car. We've had some problems with this hinge popping apart when driving, but it generally works. Overall, this allows for the platform to be in 2 large pieces and can easily be removed. Since it is only two of us, we just keep the platform in the car all the time (always ready!). Maybe in the future, I can time ourselves from unbolting the seats to putting in the platform.

    I'm 5'10 and I cannot lie flat in the back of my 2015 fit despite the front seat being pushed completely forward, so I am unsure how you manage to do this comfortably. I recommend 5'8 or shorter to be comfortable with this arrangement.

    As has been commented on a few other videos, are you not concerned about all that heavy wood in case of an accident? If rear ended, that heavy wood will be pushed right into the front seats, a bit danger to your spine at the very least! I'm considering a similar build but because of the crash aspect I'm looking to be able to fold it all into the back of the car and put the seats up before driving to separate the wood from the cabin, as that's more how the car has been designed to protect us. Nobody wants to crash but we have to consider this, else why have seatbelts and insurance.

      It didn't cross our minds, but could be an issue. The only part that could slide is the top sheet of plywood, and even then I'm not sure since it is partially wedged into place in the car. We take our back seats out since that allows considerably more space for storage. Good luck deciding a final design!

      @@ryanfields4146 fair enough! 🙂 I've also considered using the baby seat fasteners that on the base in the car behind the seats. Did you use those for anything?

      I am thinking of securing part of the wood bed platform to the original retaining bolts on floor for the rear seat (removed). Also cargo net on top hooked to carabiners that came standard with my Mazda5

    Every bloggers' video has the same problem. When people talk we need to increase the volume. When no talking music is so high that we need to put down volume. Imagine how many times we do this. Because someone might be in hospital or at bed or at night job or many reasons.
    You may say use your earphone. But even with earphone you listen suddenly awful music starts loudly.
    I would say most of you are unprofessional.
    If I'm wrong go to quite place. Play your video and check it..
    UA-cam pays you per video on duration of it. Not on how many times being watched.
