Agree with you! But I still enjoyed this scene in the show though. The actor who played Dayne was great. The show's great but the books are just better. Greater. :)
Agreed so much! I just watched the HBO version a 2nd time and only a few moments of the sword fight are impressive. I've rewatched this video over and over - and it's still perfect every time. Of course, it's hard to translate the epic style of narration into a visual scene, but they still did such a poor job. The dialogue is all circumcised and awkward. There's no tension, no build-up. No romance. The actors aren't great, but whoever directed them is at fault really.

TOJ had three legendary kings guard, ancient proud houses, a most famous sword, and it brought many pieces of the story together, both past and present with their conversation. It gave so much context to Ned, Howland Reed, Jamie Lannister killing the mad king with his golden sword, viserys & daenerys fleeing dragonstone, and how epic the kingsuard once was. What we received from the show was a butchery of one the top three most critical parts of the story-line of the entire book, the last battle where past became present, and we learn the origin of both fire & ice. He donned his helm. ”We swore a vow,” explained old Ser Gerold. Ned’s wraiths moved up beside him, with shadow swords in hand. They were seven against three. ”And now it begins,” said Ser Arthur Dayne, the Sword of the Morning. He unsheathed Dawn and held it with both hands. The blade was pale as milkglass, alive with light. ”No,” Ned said with sadness in his voice, “now it ends.”

Lovvvveee how GRRM writes!!! "But the years leach of a man's memories...". His choice of words are so simple and yet make a simple point shine like a diamond!
I always found it interesting that "7 against 3" is repeated twice in the dream sequence. As if Martin hints at something. These numbers are prominent in the story...7 realms, 7 gods of the New, 3-headed dragon (prophecy), the 3 betrayals of Dany. Could be hinting that the 7 realms will not kneel to the three-headed dragon but rather resist it/them.
They already did once, it's commonly referred to as the War of Conquest. The 7 Kingdoms also refers to the state of Westeros as it was at the beginning of said war. The Kingdom of Rivers and Hills had been conquered by first the Stormlords, and then the Iron Islands, making it the Kingdom of Isles and Rivers. If you include the Crownlands, the 7 Kingdoms are currently 9 :V
+Elvin Khudiyev No, that is a cheep answer, he may be over hating or something but that its not a valid answer. Well at least for the Daynes the whole history of that house is based in Dawn sword its literaly in their banners so it actually hurts a lot. At least the Dayne part seems to be a mess for now.
Catelyn Tully Well they're not going to do the Daynes in the show (at least not fully), which is why Dawn wasn't included, it wouldnt have mattered and it wouldnt have shown that Arthur Dayne was the greatest fighter in westeros in just a short scene if he only had 1 OP looking sword. Then it would just seem like hes winning because of Dawn.
XenonSpark Well that is the whole point of it to some extent, as George said Dawn makes a diference, and Bran could have talked about how his father told the sword was made from a meteorite. It could have been enough. Then show the 2 v 6 (or 3 v 7 like in the book if you want to) and Ned didn't needed to be a super great warrior who 1 v 1 one of the Kingsguard. Don't get me wrong i understand many changes but i also understand that they butchered something really important about House Dayne, at least they didn't made Ned kill Arthur.
Hagar TheHonorable Well they could have shown that without showing Leanna and therefore not revealing Jon. But I do hope they do eventually show it, I also hope they show it the way I envision it happening (the actual fight is very vague), so I'll probably be disappointed by the fight when it does happen, lol
1stWorldofFreedom I'd rather Arthur Dayne remain dead. The only fitting way for the best swordsman and knight in the seven kingdoms to die is performing his duty with a sword in his hand while taking at least two extremely competent swordsman out with him. The tower of joy represents that to me. The High Sparrow does not.
They already have, in the trailer for next week, when young ned says " now it ends " he did not say it with sadness but more of confidence. Already ruined
They should've used this music in the scene, they should've put it in night and they should've had more dialogue, still this version is better than show's one.
Even though the show didn't do this scene justice, the scene after this where Ned finds Lyanna is very well done. Have to give them credit when they deserve it.
This scene is GRRM at his best - the hints and story that are conveyed hidden behind the words. A simple question like Ned asking why the Kingsguard were not with Rhaegar reveals so much given the context of what we know now; Rhaegar had sent these men to the tower of joy to protect his heir, the rightful King. The Kingsguard died undertaking a task which they were honour bound to do. Otherwise, not knowing this detail, Ned is right to question why they were away from the 'Battle of the Trident' and the prince they should have been protecting; a 'dishonour' in the eyes of honourable Ned Stark. Its little tidbits like this which were hugely prevalent in the first book(s) which over time got a little watered. I think GoT shows what GRRM can do with a clear vision, unfortunately that seems to more 'roaming' (or cultivated to use his gardener analogy) in the later books. There seems to be a lot more placing things in the book which are 'cool' rather than overly important to the plot.
Jesus, that ought to be the most cringeworthy thing I've ever written on this site. Well, it is one of my favorite parts in ASOIAF and I think the show absolutely didn't do it justice. If I would guess, because they weren't that interested in investing in a seemingly mundane fight scene, which is a thing that a good writer with attention to detail wouldn't do, like George hasn't done. There was none of the mystique and surreal atmosphere, even though it happened on a vision. The knights looked as mundane and unnapealing as they could ever, and of course, because why not, removing an already pretty good dialogue in order to bother writing a new one that weren't even as good. Oh well. If I would bother reflecting on why the show turned the way it did for every scene I would go mad, but I don't even care anymore. The show's over. The books aren't, and I'm interested in those...
I wish the narrator was assisted with a two more VAs. Maybe a younger man to voice the younger men and a female voice for Lyanna. Especially the one for Lyanna, the old man's voice is so jarring. Other than that, I find myself coming back to the video for the solid narration and accompanied art. The transition to the show's Eddard waking up from a dream was another excellent choice.
Hard to believe that the greatest scene in the book series is finally coming to fruition next episode. PLEASE DO IT JUSTICE!!!! May 8th can't come soon enough!!!
I was so hyped for this scene when I knew it was gonna be in the show. Expected it to be epic but instead we got some half arsed scene where they had a dumbed down fight, left out Gerald Hightower, and cut out most of the dialogue too...
How could he when the Starks, Tullys, Arryns and Baratheons were aligned and marching on Kingslanding? Tywin has no blood claim to the throne while Robert did.
***** But Tywin has not claim to the Throne. He would have not legitimacy. Robert has a claim to the throne because he has Targaryen blood. Ned and Robert would not have yielded the throne to Tywin just because he held King's Landing.
***** Than you don't know Westerosi history very well. The Taragaryens married brothers to sisters, and had only been in Westeros for 300 years. When there was no other option available they would marry outside there house. But that has only happened 3 - 4 times. There's most definitely no bloodline connecting any Lannister with a Taragaryen.
Rutger Holtzer They married out a bit more than that i believe, at least five matches with house Velaryon, three with house Martell, the first Viserys was married to an Arryn and later Allicent Hightower, and Maegor had 8-9 wives, among them Jeyne Westerling, Alys Harroway and Tyanna of Pentos. The intermarriages weren't exclusively brother-sister either: Rhaenyra's second husband was her uncle. But indeed, no Lannister-Targaryen connection as of yet.
love the way these kingsguard knew they were dead but fulfilled there vow to the end, my favourite 3 kingsguard members Aemon The Dragonknight, Ser Arthur Dayne and Ryam Redwyne. Worst 3 Jamie lannister the kingslayer ser Criston Cole the kingmaker and boros blunt the fat coward
All D&D had to do was follow this narration and put in some great fighting and it would have been awesome . Arthur Dayne didn’t even have the sword Dawn for god’s sake.
This amazing scene was incredibly and utterly flat in the TV version. Rushed and ruined. And worst of all then cut right before the key moment just to drag this shit out longer because these fools don't know how to properly plan a season out.
fucking sublime. this is george martin at his best. his innate ability to make you feel like you know everything, like you are there, like the entire story is already inside your head. simple, poetic, powerful. cant wait to see it on the tv show.
Game of Thrones should have added this into the opening of episode 6. I get they didn't want to use flashbacks at the time, but they could have had the episode start off with blackness, voices in the background like noise down a tunnel, a woman's voice repeating "Promise me." I always found it interesting that "7 against 3" is repeated twice in the dream sequence.
If you include the Crownlands, the 7 Kingdoms are currently 9 :V
gotta love those prime numbers
The seven kingdoms verses the 3 headed dragon
Only the show can call Arthur Dayne the sword of the morning, yet he has no Dawn with him LOL. I knew they would ruined this scene.
+Darthv90 The show is loosely based, or inspired by the books. Not even an adaptation anymore.
+Darthv90 Wow really? "Ruined this scene"? Its not a complete version of the scene, but they didnt ruin it.
“Our knees do not bend”
“The Kingsguard do not flee… then or now.”
This is the essence of epicness. I just can't wait to see this scene in the show in season 6.
Remains my favourite scene in the books, why oh why was this not in the show?
Also, Arthur Dayne
Trepur349 i agree with that, really missed the introduction of a great mystery.
Trepur349 I bet they are saving it for Jon Snow's reveal probably towards the end of the series.
Trepur349 would it not be cool if the Sparrow was Arthur Dayne lol
1stWorldofFreedom I'd rather Arthur Dayne remain dead.
The only fitting way for the best swordsman and knight in the seven kingdoms to die is performing his duty with a sword in his hand while taking at least two extremely competent swordsman out with him.
The tower of joy represents that to me. The High Sparrow does not.
I'm going to assume that D&D will yet again appeal to soft core viewers and alter the dialogue immensely because no one will know any of this shit.
They already have, in the trailer for next week, when young ned says " now it ends " he did not say it with sadness but more of confidence. Already ruined
+Bashman11 no he sounds tired in the promo
It's not entirely risible for them to appeal to a wide audience, when the books exist for those more curious about the lore, and the finer details.
+MysteriousGamer The worst thing about it is the Lack of Dawn itself... dual wield really...
Stuart Mannick instead of meteor sword
Get that anime crap outta here
They should've used this music in the scene, they should've put it in night and they should've had more dialogue, still this version is better than show's one.
Disagree. Feast and Dance is GRRM's prime
Ned is going through so many emotions. It makes sense that he had sadness in his voice, the Kingsguard remained true.
Why did this make me cry? I just...
MY FAVORITE PASSAGE IN LITERATURE EVER. IF THEY NAIL THIS ON THE SHOW I'LL SCREAM REALLY LOUD.
+Slow1337ex You may rest easy at last my friend. Oh and scream
+215Ravenous Now to destroy them vocal chords for R+L=J
+Slow1337ex Nope , of course they fucked up.
I miss this excitement for GoT, good times 😊

A storm of rose petals blew across a blood-streaked sky, as blue as the eyes of death.
A subtle foreshadowing for the eyes of the Others maybe ?
"Our knees do not bend easily" Ser Arthur Dayne was a fucking TRIPLE O.G
Crazy what you can do with a narrator, some music and mashup of artwork, actual masterpiece
Why is the war of the usurper not a movie yet! So much awesome.
I really think GRRM will go down as the GOAT of character development. While LOTR is peak fiction cinema. I've never heard of writing like this
Roses are red
Violets are blue
Ser Willem is a good man and true
These 3 are my favorite kingsguard just because of how they handled this whole situation. Loyal till the death.
Such a sad theme in the begining of this video. Epic and Perfect
one of my favorite videos on youtube, please never delete it!
Roy Dotrice was the narrator. It was taken from a passage of the audiobook, "A Game of Thrones".
“We were not there.” - Ser Gerald Hightower, Lord Commander of the Kingsguard and master Laconic speaker.
this was moment I really wanted in the show but sadly nothing...
they managed to fuck this scene up too, FFS it's unbelievable
"The Kingsguard does not flee."
Hard to believe that the greatest scene in the book series is finally coming to fruition next episode. PLEASE DO IT JUSTICE!!!! May 8th can't come soon enough!!!
This video is better than the scene in the series.
0:45 Interview With the Vampire score
Beautiful and haunting. Especially with the narration
The main theme music is "Harpa Maledicere" by PP music from their "Burn this city" album.
fantastic work on music.. it really blended well.
Man they fucked it up in the show.
This is the most epic reading ever
I was so hyped for this scene when I knew it was gonna be in the show. Expected it to be epic but instead we got some half arsed scene where they had a dumbed down fight, left out Gerald Hightower, and cut out most of the dialogue too...
+Crumbumification yea .. -.-
+Crumbumification Don't know what you're talking about, the scene in the show was awesome. Best fight scene they have done.
Auzzie015 it was dumbed down .. especially the dialog
+Kiciner Jems Well I liked it. May not have been as good as the books but it was in no way 'half-arsed' as the OP says.
+Auzzie015 better fight scene than the mountain vs Oberyn or Brienne vs the hound? No way.
This is the "Luke, I am your father!" scene of ASoIaF/GoT.
+mori1bund Except that both are dead.
More like the "Luke I am not your father" scene of ASoIaF
mori1bund Nerd fun fact: Noone actual says " Luke, I am your father."
Vader says "No.. I am your father."
That's an insult.
S6 Woe to the fucking usurper confirmed
+Chrome Hokage Word 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
+Lautaro
Well, actually, for a reason beyond me that awesome, badass line was not included.
This is awesome!!! The history before the war of the 5 kings is what makes me love this show even more.
+Willie Simmons Fuck the show.
+dagger doom Let him have his oppinion, geez.
Beautiful. Tragic. Stunning.
Goosebumps when he says "I promise Lya, I promise"
No Dragon will ever sit on the Iron Throne again.
***** Tywin didn't have the power to take the iron throne himself, and he knew it.
But indeed, no Lannister-Targaryen connection as of yet.
the music fits so much.please make more
They did Arthur Dayne justice but the rest of the scene seemed a bit rushed but easily best bit this season
I absolutely love Roy Dotrice!! his voice is so perfect for the audio books!!
I love roy dotrice voice. So comforting
The greatness of this writing is that three historic fighters could not overcome seven men who fight as well.
love the way these kingsguard knew they were dead but fulfilled there vow to the end, my favourite 3 kingsguard members Aemon The Dragonknight, Ser Arthur Dayne and Ryam Redwyne. Worst 3 Jamie lannister the kingslayer ser Criston Cole the kingmaker and boros blunt the fat coward
this is one of my favorite videos on youtube, thank you
RIP Roy Dotrice ;(
OMG!!! can't wait for the tv show to show us how this fight really went down. gonna be EPIC
satisfiedo?
satisfied?
All D&D had to do was follow this narration and put in some great fighting and it would have been awesome . Arthur Dayne didn’t even have the sword Dawn for god’s sake.
The music that is played along with the introduction of the kings guard(especially what/who they’re protecting)gives me cold chills.
This amazing scene was incredibly and utterly flat in the TV version. Rushed and ruined. And worst of all then cut right before the key moment just to drag this shit out longer because these fools don't know how to properly plan a season out.
tinote Right? There's no reason for Bloodraven to do that. Why is he showing it in the first place?
I love the narration and music on this clip.
TOWER OF JOY HYPE
Christ529057 aaaand they fucked it up
I would honestly pay to watch this. This is amazing! I can't believe how Dumb&Dumber managed to screw this all up
“But not of the Kingsguard,". “The Kingsguard does not flee.” .Shit Ser Gerold is the fucking boss.
“In the dream they were only shadows, grey wraiths on horses made of mist.”
DAMN! That’s some frickin writing ain’t it!
fucking sublime. this is george martin at his best. his innate ability to make you feel like you know everything, like you are there, like the entire story is already inside your head. simple, poetic, powerful. cant wait to see it on the tv show.
Game of Thrones should have added this into the opening of episode 6. I get they didn't want to use flashbacks at the time, but they could have had the episode start off with blackness, voices in the background like noise down a tunnel, a woman's voice repeating "Promise me." There were ways they could have worked around this.
