As the former accountant at a retirement community, yes - the 30 day notice is legit. After someone passes, care fees and other extra expenses are immediately stopped. The rent on the home continues for 30 days to allow the family time to move out possessions. This may seem weird but this is no different than any other rental situation. What I will say is that, based on my experience, it was very rare to actually collect that full final rent from the family. First of all, as I said earlier, care fees are stopped at death. Since these are paid in advance, there is a refund due and care fees are not inexpensive. Secondly, there is a long wait list for homes. Depending on the family situation, most choose to move the deceased’s possessions out quickly and allow the home to be re-rented. And also, please keep in mind, most these deaths are not unexpected and these financial conversations/decisions have already been completed. I know this may all seem not great, and I struggled with some practices (hence the “former” accountant), but at the end of the day I simply focused on the resident - what could I do to make their day brighter and, in return, what they brought to my day. Folks in retirement communities have lived and have the most amazing stories! If you never have, I highly encourage volunteering at a community-listening to a resident’s stories is such a wonderful experience.
This place has so many unique pieces WOW! This is really fun to watch thanks for the video! ☕️☀️ Mixing pieces of furniture that don’t specifically go together or putting a single piece in a area uncommon is a great way to decorate! 🪑
Happy Sunday! How awful to take advantage of families when they are grieving. I took care of my Dad's estate and managing thru the finances was exhausting and I am an accountant. It was a tough time to navigate through everything. Surprising to hear a nursing home is not more sensitive.
Similar experience here when my father passed away. We had to pay the skilled nursing facility a month in advance, so they already had the money. And he was private pay, over $13k a month. Granted at the end of his journey he needed the highest level of care due to the progression of his Alzheimer’s, but I was still there daily helping feed him, dress him, etc because they were always so short staffed. I really loved many of the workers, but these facilities are in crisis I feel with so few people wiling to work in them. I know darn well that little of that $13k a month reached those doing the majority of the work.
@@juliemoses1909 This one was a non-profit, but I hear you. I researched and toured several in our area before deciding the best place for my father and it was wild to learn the differences in care offered/delivered, payments accepted, and the ownership/leadership at the facilities. I kept thinking about all of those living in the various places I went without someone like me helping them navigate all of it and managing all of the financial, health, and other matters for them. They're so vulnerable.
Thank you for sharing. We are going through the exact same thing with my dad. Best nursing home in the area and my mother is there everyday taking care of my dad because they have no staff and the poor staff that remains gets used and abused. Until you have to use it, I don’t think people realize how bad care for seniors is in this country.
@@Hemmyii I'm sending you and your family so much love. It's such a hard position for all involved. Wishing all the best for your dad, your mom, you and all involved in his care.
What an awesome antique shop. So many gorgeous things and the dollhouse was adorable. Thanks for taking us along. I could spend hours in there. Happy Sunday, Dr Dray! I hope you have a peaceful evening. 💙
Sun room would be great breakfast room / solarium (with lots of pretty plants.. thinking of the Disney move Polly Anna, her Aunts house) also pretty at night with lighting. A lot you can do. So fun!
ok, now! This is one absolutely wonderful antique store! Can we please revisit this store more often? I wish I could pull up to the store with a pickup truck.
Your China set is very pretty with the floral pattern 💮 That antique store has many gems there. Thank you Dr. Dray for taking us along 😊 Take care everyone 🌹
This is such a beautiful store, I could wander for hours. Thank you for taking us along. I would go home and make a plan of the pieces I liked and how they would coordinate with each other and fit into the spaces of my home.
Omg i love antique shops so much because they have such a variety of pretty and elegant glassware or crystal ones. From vases to whatever bits and bobs 😊❤. Thank you so much Doctor Andrea for taking us with you.
Sleeping in sunlight is the best! My current bedroom window unfortunately doesn’t allow sunlight to shine on my bed because of the angle, but I remember many sunlit naps in the sunroom of the house I used to live in. I miss it.
I think you should buy the wrought iron bistro table with the marble top. And the matching chairs which I saw in the corner they were painted black. Buy the set and spray paint it a light pink and it’ll look so nice in your patio area.
It's it's almost tomorrow and I'm late but that antique store did have some beautiful things! You're a girl after my own heart and I like your little China set that you showed in the beginning of the video as well.😍
I have a two of those big tea cups like yours by Portobello ( purchased at HomeGoods, love that store) …I use mine for coffee and love sipping my Java out of such a pretty cup☕️… From the little glimpses of your home it looks so quaint and adorable, congratulations on your new home💕
Wow!!! Thank you for taking us along for the journey looking at the antique store, there were so many beautiful pieces of furniture; looks like you had your eyes on so many beautiful items especially the needlepoint chairs and mirrors. Looking forward to seeing more beautiful furniture in future antique adventures. Thank you for sharing Dr. Dray.
Yes they charge if death and need to move stuff out while grieving. I get it though, there is a long waiting list for a room and they have to clean and move someone in. I’ve been at both ends when I need a room and for when someone passes so I understand both sides. The fee also covers so many things so I understand charging but it also sucks too.
So coffee every day is my treat as I do my walk and listen to you. Also I live in Australia and we take coffee seriously. There are many other things I don’t spend $ on ( hairdressers scented candles 😂) Have a fun weekend
Happy Sunday Dr Dray!! Boy!! What a Way to Make a Buck!! So Much for Compasion!! Anyway I Really Enjoyed the Video, I Always Do!! I Think You're Awesome!! Have a Beautiful Day, and Please Enjoy the Rest of Your Weekend!!❤
Hi Jackie! Happy Sunday!! How was your day? I hope it was fantastic!! It was another pretty day here but we really need rain. Doesn't look like we'll be getting any this week. It's supposed to be 97 degrees on Wednesday. Goodbye to the open windows. 😞 Besides doing the routine daily chores, I didn't do much extra. Spent some time outside watching the birds and staring up at the clouds. I'm about to have some tea and would love to share it with you, my dear, sweet friend. I think we deserve a sweet treat too! My kitties have gathered around for their cuddles and would like Miss Fancy Pants to join them. Please give her hugs and cuddles from me. I hope you have a beautiful evening. Peace, joy and many blessings to you always. 💞🙏💞🕊💞☕☕🐈🐈💞🐾🐾🍰💞

Fun video! I don't know if you're familiar with Lady Mary Beth's UA-cam channel but she put out a map of Houston antique stores, consignment shops, thrift stores, etc. I believe the stores included all carry the maps in their stores. I'm amazed (and a tad jealous) at how much good stuff is available in Houston. Antique stores are always going to be pricier than the consignment shops, which tend to lower prices on a regular scheduled basis. Happy Shopping!
Hi Dr Dray! I used to use Skinceuticals vitamin C for my rosacea. Unfortunately, it is tested on animals so I have stopped buying it. Is there a cruelty-free, yet science-backed alternative? Thank you so much. I adore your personality & channel.
Nursing homes resident are on Medicaid that is different from skilled nursing facilities that take insurance like Medicare. If a patient dies in a skilled nursing facility the insurance stops paying on the day the member expired.
That happened to us when my father-in-law passed away. He was living in an assisted living facility and was still very active. His death was sudden and unexpected and the facility tried to charge us for another month of rent after the fact. When we fought it, they told us his apartment had to be cleared out by the end of the week, despite our grieving and scrambling to arrange his funeral.
