The Central Valley Greenway is, for this portion, a diagonal route cutting across the street grid system. Yes, there's a 'detour' around this intersection, via Off Broadway (on 8th Ave) then Lakewood. You should probably take that detour every time. But it's longer and hillier (and wasn't even a great option until they recently installed the traffic light at Victoria & 8th). There's no reason that this intersection (Broadway & Victoria) can't be properly designed.
You cross 6 lanes of traffic without any kind of signal - just paint - with a small island in the middle. Traffic is not meant to stop, but often one of the 3 lanes in the second half will stop for you. If you try to go at that point, you'll likely be hit by a car in one of the other 2 lanes. So stay at the island until Broadway has a red light and all the lanes have to stop moving because of that light.
As bad as it is, if you happen to time it right, then Broadway will have had a red light at Commercial (way off to the right) for a while, so few/no cars will be approaching in the second half, and will just be getting a red light at Victoria (immediately to the left), so few/no cars will be approaching in the first half, which makes it a bit easier to cross.
The opposite direction of travel (westbound) is better, since you cross both streets at the intersection, one at a time, but it's still not great.
Note: a truck driver yells "nice bike" to some motorcycles - it's not directed at me, nor am I part of the conversation.
