Improvements: Arbutus Greenway at King Edward Ave
January 2025 vs December 2023.
Looks like there's still some minor line painting and grass/plant planting left to do, but it's essentially done and the detour has closed (although the signs are still up telling you to take the detour...).

Next, the city plans to upgrade the intersection at 41st Ave.

What are you doing cycling?
I'm not sure I understand the question. It's my primary method of transportation, and the point of the channel is to record bike routes in the region.
Merry Christmas!
nice to see some protected bike lanes but the unprotected intersections (especially when cars were trying to turn right into your path) were scary
Yup. Drivers should wait at the stop line until it's clear to turn right. It's much more comfortable for cyclists and pedestrians, and gives a lot more reaction time in case you aren't seen.
Underrated east-west connector
Patullo always fun :) I remember on a bike passing someone on a wheelchair...

the bi-directional bike lane on 18th recieved alot of backlash from the public. It's likely going to be altered
At 0:59, there have been updates to the bike network. The protected lane on the left is one-way, and you need to stay on the road, on the right, to get to Kingsway. The lane on Kingsway has also been extended east to 19th Ave. See ua-cam.com/video/HpEP3L7EjKg/v-deo.html

At 7:03, there have been updates to the bike network. The lane now continues along Kingsway to the next intersection and allows you to cross and go along 19th Ave. The intersection of Britton St and 18th Ave has also been rearranged.
Sigh
nice place.. new subscribe from Philippines. 💯
What's the progress on the quick build bike lane on Guildford Way?
I don't visit that area often, or recently, but I believe the lanes exists between Johnson and just west of Falcon.
I went by yesterday and the eastbound bike lane is more-or-less done all the way to Town Centre Blvd (from near Falcon Dr); the last block to Pinetree Way is still under construction. I'm not sure about westbound.
@GeoStreetMaps-zw6cx I also visited the eastbound direction. Didn't expect a permanent construction since it was quick build before. It looked really good
A car crashes compilation can remind us that overconfidence on the road is just as dangerous as inexperience.
just a relaxing video, i like it
Note: The plaza on Robson St, right at the start, is under construction now.
Note: The construction along Prenter St, between Buller Ave and Rumble St, has been completed. You are meant to use the road, which eventually turns into a car-free path, not the sidewalk.

OMFG... I hate cyclists. all over the road, riding 2 and 3 abreast. And think they own the road and have right of way always......They need to get it through their thick heads the road rules apply to them also. How about a little common sense fella?
3:20 Most of the rest is why I gave up riding a motorcycle, I didn't want to die! But at 3:20, that was your fault, their turn signal was on, and you rode right into the cars path. As for Broadway and Victoria Street, that setup is confusing as heck, I would make the same mistake as those drivers. I know it's posted, but I've never seen that before, I don't do much downtown driving. So, I apologize in advance to any bike riders I do that to.
My understanding is that if you're turning across another (straight-through) lane then you yield to that lane - most intersections like this have an explicit sign saying to yield to bikes when turning right. In this case, they were signalling, but hadn't started turning yet. They started their turn while I was right beside them. They drove into my path, rather than me riding into their path. Alternatively, since the bike lane has a dashed line here, you can change lanes into the bike lane just before the intersection, and then turn right from the bike lane. This just shifts the check-and-yield to before the intersection instead of at the intersection, which seems safer. But I never see anyone do this. (In fact, Drive Smart BC seems to be saying that you *have* to do this.) But I could be wrong - if so, any sources which clarify the situation would be appreciated.
8:56 ? Is that even bad driving? There's no pedestrian crossing there. What's the issue?
There is a pedestrian on the right of the screen trying to cross. The sidewalk on either side continues across the road, so there is an unmarked crosswalk here. Vehicles must yield to pedestrians using a crosswalk (marked or unmarked). (See section 119 of the MVA for the definition of crosswalk.)
@@GeoStreetMaps-zw6cx so the car should have stopped in the middle of the intersection? the clip literally right after it u claim is bad driving and its a driver stopped in an intersection for a pedestrian crossing in an unmarked crosswalk
The driver should stop before entering the intersection, wait for the pedestrian to cross, then go through the intersection.
@@GeoStreetMaps-zw6cx No. There's no All-Stop sign there which implies a stop sign on every direction of the intersection. Please learn the rule book.
From the Motor Vehicle Act: 119 (1) defines crosswalk as (among other things) "the portion of a highway at an intersection that is included within the connection of the lateral lines of the sidewalks on the opposite sides of the highway". ('Highway' is defined differently in the MVA than in every-day use - the streets in Vancouver are all highways according to the MVA.) 179 (1) says "[...] the driver of a vehicle must yield the right of way to a pedestrian where traffic control signals are not in place or not in operation when the pedestrian is crossing the highway in a crosswalk [...]". 189 (1) (c) states that a driver must not stop a vehicle "in an intersection, except as permitted by a sign". These 3 rules put together imply my previous statement ("The driver should stop before entering the intersection, wait for the pedestrian to cross, then go through the intersection.") unless I've overlooked something? Stop signs are not relevant to the situation we're discussing. Source: www.bclaws.gov.bc.ca/civix/document/id/complete/statreg/96318_05
Your bike route map with videos is an amazing resource, thanks for making it!
Good video
you are doing amazing job, big thank you!
hey
Looks so uncomfortable and scary
The curb ramps are awful and I contacted the city about it ages ago. Continuous/raised crosswalks along there is a great idea. This was my regular route for a while and might be again after all the construction is over. In addition to the curb issue, while riding southbound drivers regularly roll past their stop signs while only looking left, not realizing (or caring?) that people are riding bicycles in both directions. Going southbound I would take the curb lane on the west side of Willingdon because it’s flat and downhill so could mostly keep up with drivers. That’s not great for riders of all ages and abilities though, so improving that path would be nice. Great videos btw, love what you’re doing with them.
Thanks. Drivers only checking for oncoming cars when turning right is extremely common everywhere unfortunately. The new plans for Frances Union have a lot of continuous sidewalks - hopefully that doesn't get pulled out, and makes it to construction.
That looks terrifying. Imagine being a kid trying to cross there
Just like the US, Canada has terrible infrastructure. This is what happen when USA babysit Canada
The sign at 11:42 is hilarious, and will surely be obeyed 100% of the time on a protected bike lane… I’m very familiar with the area at 41:38 though have only ridden there westbound, and that’s a ridiculous and dangerous eastbound setup for a very busy intersection. All of Lougheed is too much paint and not enough physical protection.
I ride this route as my commute all the time. It could benefit from better separated north-south connections to the BC Parkway and Skytrain Station to start
Definitely, and to Royal Oak & Oakland/Burris.
Can't thank you enough for these videos!! You're an angel
in defense of people with poor spatial perception, just plopping a disc of greenery in the middle of an intersection, with no change to lane markings and signage, shouldnt magically turn it into a roundabout. its a really half-assed job, especially when the next intersection is standard again.
Are you referring to the clips in the "Crashes & Roundabouts" chapter at 1:30? Those are ubiquitous in Vancouver, and there are signs facing all four directions with a diagram showing that you need to stay to the right. I'm sure, beyond a reasonable doubt, that these drivers understand how they work and know that they're doing the wrong thing. I'm sympathetic to people who genuinely get confused by road configurations, but personally I don't think any changes are needed to the road design here. The alternative would be stop signs for the cross road, and given how most cars slow down instead of stopping, I don't think that would be better/safer for cyclists (these 2 clips are on bike routes).
Update: Apparently the seawall was reopened a few hours after I recorded this, funny timing.
the people driving on the wrong side of the roundabout, should be reported. that is not the way to drive.
Have you had success reporting drivers? How do you do it? I don't see any online form or portal, it seems like the only way is to call the police and file a report, which is a hassle.
@@GeoStreetMaps-zw6cx yes VPD has a specific traffic unit department that I emailed my videos and concerns to, and they can issue warnings and tickets as needed i can send you a message for the VPD email?
Yes, thanks.

Like the video. I enjoy ride-along videos, be them on bikes, trains, walks. What do you use for a camera?
Thanks. I use the AKASO V50 Pro, which has worked pretty well/reliably so far.
@@GeoStreetMaps-zw6cx thanks. I'm looking and making videos of my drives around in my power wheelchair so I am looking into good cameras.
the sidewalk looks narrow
get a job
Note: Revisited in April 2024 and the middle of this route was closed as the old PNE amphitheatre is being upgraded. No signs warning you in advance, nor a clear detour.
1:17 ABANDONED LOWES
Hi! I really enjoy your footage of all the bike routes around here - you’ve definitely covered more ground than what I’ve managed to film haha. Would I be able to use some of your footage in a future project covering Vancouver’s bike infra, with credit given?
Yeah sure.
I also watched #paintdrying
So much money on bike lanes makes me mad for some reason
It's hard to get exact numbers on projects since they're often done at the same time as other work (such as replacing a sewer), but generally my understanding is that adding bike infrastructure is significantly cheaper than, say, creating a single highway overpass or on-/off-ramp (which we do all the time without questioning the cost). Also the maintenance is much easier because there aren't heavy cars/trucks wearing the surface down. For example, Richmond recently created a road River Parkway where an old train track used to be, for $13.2m. And all this did was replace the existing parallel River Rd, adding no new car capacity. Whereas adding a separated bike path to Gilbert Rd is expected to be about $4.2m (and this is on the more expensive end of bike projects - adding some concrete barriers and repainting some lanes is obviously much cheaper).
Driving brings out the worst in people. Once people enter their private tank, they become super entitled, selfish or impatient. Most people wouldn't behave that way outside of their cars. It's similar to how people act on social media vs. the real world.
