I am so grateful for your invitation to become part of your family. We are retired in Nashville, TN. Every morning, we give thanks to God to pick little bundle of vegetables from our small garden. Since watching your video, we want to do more planting. Your explanation "how to" with drawing & actual growth is thorough. We give thanks to you for your hard work to share with everyone.
I planted my first 6 cloves in November after stratifiying for a few weeks (we don't have much of a winter here). To my utmost delight they all sprang up immediately and in early April they were done. Among all the veg I've been trying for the first time (I do flowers mainly) and came out well, the garlic made me the happiest. I danced around, showing them to anyone in sight.. it's such magic - put one clove, get a bunch! :)
Hollis and Nancy have some of the best, most informative, and entertaining gardening videos on youtube. Times are absolutely nuts right now and sometimes I just need a break from it all! I'll turn to their videos. Hollis with that caramel smooth southern drawl, non-stop gardening info and tips, and of course love for God and Country! Need I say more? Even if you don't actively garden I urge everyone to tune in regardless. They really are the best!
This video is the most thorough and informative I've seen....EVER! Your OCD calms me and helps to not overwhelm or intimidate me. It is my plan to start a small garden this year and I've been watching your videos faithfully. You and Mrs. Nancy are such a blessing. I can't begin to tell you how grateful I am to have found y'all. I'm a little OCD as well and it feels good to know that I'm not the only one. Thank you for sharing and teaching. May God Bless You Both.
OCD folks feel at ease around each other for sure. Best of luck to you with your spring garden this year!! You can do this and you will love it❤️❤️❤️. We are so glad you like our videos. We have a lot of new videos to be released this year that you may like. Stay tuned, we start our 2018 Season on January 18th 👍👍👍. Have a peaceful weekend
Hollis & Nancy's Homestead Hi, new here from So Cal and heard it’s ok to plant garlic and onions about this time in my new Small starter garden. Wondering if they can be planted next to each other on the ground with Organic potting soil store bought. I also added some fertilizer eggshells dry leaves, newspaper and wood chips around it. How often should they be watered? God bless 🙏👏
Oh, I love that "God's gonna do the watering today" Amen to that. I planted some store bought garlic last fall because all the seeds stores were sold out by then. They did ok but once all the April showers came; they started to go bad, so I pulled them all. They still grew of medium size and are good enough for cooking. Now watching this video, went to Baker's Creek and they are sold out. I was fortunate to have found some at Gurney's. So folks, get your garlic orders in early like Mr. Hollis said. Thanks Mr. Hollis and Mrs. Nancy for all you do to teach us. I'm off to watch part 2 of this series now.
Years ago I harvested my garlic and braided the tops and hung them on a knot on the pine tree. My dad sat in his chair observing all of this and then asked, " Is that going to keep the evil spirits away?" I'll never forget his funnies.
Love your teachings on how to grow your own food. I'm also very proud to be an American and like you, I enjoy having shirts or stickers displaying our beautiful flag. Gotta represent. Thanks for the awesome videos.
Hollis is so cute! I love the way he's so excited. I don't have any desire to be as methodical as he is, but I still get a kick out of his attention to detail. Marvelous!
Hollis & Nancy's Homestead I do wish I had the ability to be that attentive, but I have to go with things that come in on their own! I have a great bed of asparagus and lots of herbs. I have an area for lettuce in the spring. But every time I sally forth into growing other things my batting rate for success is usually one item per year! And the deer are a constant plague. . . But I love seeing what you are able to do! I'll keep watching and maybe some of your 'magic' will rub off on me! Love you guys!
I really LOVE Hollis' garden methods...I am someone who rejects the psychiatric labels they put on honest, constructive folks as a pretext to drug us...what they are labeling are just coping with life and the reality they find themselves in who are constructive with basic common sense. Yes SweetPea Brown the adjective is indeed "methodical" like you said, and not "OCD" but we can simply ridicule their attempts on good folks like Hollis et al. I can see labeling those that may be obsessive compulsive disorder for destructive purposes, but such a term cannot apply for constructive purposes which is the Holy Ghost at work.
You know something, a co worker told me about your channel. It finally clicked when you said Newport News. I lived there for 27 years, left in 2017 for Norfolk, which was for 1 year, spent my childhood summers in Chesapeake. I truly didn’t want to leave. Born and raised in DC/MD, I’ve ALWAYS had a love for Hampton Roads, formally Tidewater!
You can also use the garlic shoot from the hardneck garlic, also called garlic scape, and cook with it just like the clove from garlic. A lot of Korean recipes use them.
This is the best garlic video I have ever seen. I knew there is soft and hard neck but I didn't know the difference beyond that. Thanks again. I also like how it started to rain right when you needed it yo
I've got more fall garlic and onions to plant, so I'm rewatching this very complete series of videos. Thanks again Hollis and Nancy. I'm glad you're taking some time to relax and enjoy your home and family. Always good to get some rest and recreation in. Keeps you healthy!
Thank you so much for posting this. I enjoyed watching till the very end, you really did do a wonderful job of explaining everything so very well. I love it, also that y'all include the good Lord in this video and thanked him.
I bought and planted Elephant Garlic for the first time about 20 years ago. I have never had to purchase it again. I always save a handful of cloves and replant them . Sometimes they reseed themself. I always have plenty to use and give away. This year I am planting hardneck garlic using your suggestions. Looking forward to a good harvest. Thanks
Thanks so much for this video, just planted so garlic, I didn't do very thing, so now I know how to finish the process. You are a very good instructor. Thank you so much and GOD Bless.👍👍💖
i love that you share your homestead you all must save a lot on grocery shopping. I have a big back yard but I can only grow in my small side yard even still my husband would not let me plant a lot so I need to get creative. trying to figure out container growing.
+Digishots Photography Container gardening is very easy to do and maintain. It is very popular for folks with limited space. Vertical gardening is also a big space saver.
If you turn your rake around and use the flat side to level it, it works better. I grew up with a humongous garden. I know lots of tips. Love your videos.
As I prepare to plant my garlic for the first time I happened across your series. I can not thank you enough for putting this out! All of my questions have been answered. So much great information on these clips. God bless
Hollis write books on your planting your diff building projects and many of us will buy them...this is the best info I have ever seen on growing garlic thank you thank you
I live in the Northeast in PA. I was told this by one of my “old timer” friends and it has stuck with me for 25 years. He said what do you think of when you think of garlic. I said Italian food. He said you’re right. Think of planting garlic this way, what was Christopher Columbus….Italian. I always plant my garlic, weather permitting within a couple days of Columbus Day.
i have to say you have really inspired me with your success, even tho you were in a city. i often heard the roar or noise of traffic in the background. still you pressed on with progress. i'm glad you got you a new place and able to expand and enjoy a place from the noise of city life. God bless.
Always enjoy watching your videos! Very informative. Rewatching this video I realized how much you remind me of my dad Hollis. My dad was a hard worker who loved to garden and share his knowledge and experience. He taught us in a similar fashion as you and your voice sounds a lot like his. He passed away this summer. Thanks again for sharing you tips, tricks, faith and love of Christ.
So sorry for your loss Sheri. Losing our parents is such a deep pain. We are really never the same after they are gone. Seems like I never realized how much my parents are a part of my being until they passed away. I have some new videos coming out after the first of the year. I hope they will bring some joy to you. Have a peaceful new year my friend
Hollis, looks like the good Lord blessed you with a little rain. I purchased the Red Creole and Music garlic from Baker Creek. Happy gardening to you and Nancy!
+Carmen Greer Yes, He blesses us in ways too numerous to count 😍😍😍. Best of luck to you with your garlic!! Be sure to post some pix on our Facebook Page, we would love to see your harvest. Thank you so much for watching. Have a blessed weekend😇
I just ran across this video. Very thorough. We are just outside Richmond and probably have a bit colder weather but not too bad. Planted my first garlic last fall. Cannot wait to see how it turns out this summer. Only issue I had was the darned squirrels dug up about a third of what I planted.
You both are amazing at teaching us how to grow all of those amazing veggies and fruits!!! I’m learning so much and am started to binge watch all these videos y’all are putting out! My husband, me, and our 2 teenagers are REALLY enjoying how detailed you are with the easy way you explain it. I’m hoping my black thumb turns into a green one when I start following your direction. Soooooo exciting!!!!! Thank you so very much for sharing al of your knowledge and expertise with us!!!!! 😊
Is there a way I could donate to you two? I have learned so much from your videos, I want to help support what you guys do. You are two fantastic people.

I only buy my garlic from Whole Foods since they are so good about non spraying and no chemicals. Baker Creek is great but since I don't buy too much the shipping is very high. You are really good. Thank you and God Blesz
Ive been watching some of your videos and this is the first one that you mentioned Newport News! 😁 My husband grew up in NN and we are in Chesapeake now! Glad to find locals that I can follow (especially with the same grow zones! I plan on doing garlic for the first time this fall 😁
I want to thank you for videos.I have watched and learned so much from you guys. Beautiful Food. Just like out of a magazine. Your so content with all you do. One thing I enjoy most of all about your videos that You give God all the glory. Your obedience to him. It shows me that through him the harvest is very plentiful. I love the scriptures at the end. It has also made me want to put God first in everything I do. You guys have inspired me so much. Thank you!!! God Bless
I don't know why your video is not coming up. Maybe its my phone having problems. I love watching your video. I learned so much from your videos. Thank you so much! God blessed you and your wife.
UA-cam unsubscribed thousands of our subscribers all the time. I’m sorry but you may be one that they keep unsubscribing. We have had many folks tell us about this.
Just popping in to say HI, and get the recipe (again) for the super sauce you soak your Garlic Cloves in. Short term memory isn't my long suit anymore! Still haven't had a frost this year. Going to their Winter home tomorrow. Hope all is well with you both. Thanks as always for sharing your knowledge.😊 Mark n Rosa
Thank you so much for this video on growing garlic. I really enjoyed how simple you made it and it was fun.. After work i will be headed home to get them planted. Yall keep up the great work.
Baker Creek Seed is AWESOME!! Jere and his wife Emilee (owners) are some pretty nice people too! Their storefront is about an hour and a half away from us. It is where I get all my seed! Thank you for such informative videos!
+Dr. Carla Northcott Thanks for watching! Baker Creek is by far my favorite seed supplier. You probably heard me mention Baker Creek in several of my videos. They are a quality company and have some really cool seeds!
I also like my rows straight (I have adhd) so what I did this year is use a lot of sticks and strings and made squares. I have nice straight rows. ( I told my husband even if not much grew at least my rows were straight.) it also makes weeding to much easier with the rows straight. Thanks for these tips. This is my first year really gardening. The garlic was here when we moved here in May. I knew bothering about garlic. I think I may have left them in the garden to long.
Wow thank you so much for showing me how to do garlic everyone I asked tell me how to do it but I can see that your way is a lot more easier than mine I never get garlic I planted little tiny shoots come up but I never get really garlic I dig it up and it's just a tiny little thing so I think I need to mulch it like you did on top of it gets cold here in Montana thank you very much sharing God bless you
You should have a much better success rate with your garlic now. Let me know how they do. Planting in the fall and letting winter over should do well for you. Be sure you use Hard Neck Varieties only for your neck of the woods❤️
In a rustic sort of garden I don't worry too much about uniformity, and does that template not repack the soil you just loosened? I kind of like obtaining loose granular soil by the use of mulch with wood bark and greens, and such. But I digress I only grow in containers. And my garlic right now is from 12 to 18 high, looking real nice. A great video. Thanks
I planted garlic for the first time ever yesterday. I didn't have a chance to order any so I had to buy from Lowes. One site I read said to put the cloves in the fridge for 30 days, but I just stuck mine in the ground. Next year I will take your advice and soak it in seaweed and baking soda. We will see if I get any to come up. Next year I will prepare better.
+6996katmom Seems like everyone has there way of growing garlic. I don't do the garlic in the freezer bit, some people swear by it. Do what works for you
+6996katmom Buy your garlic from a good source. Don't buy from A box store or grocery store. Buy some high quality garlic from someone like Baker Creek Seed Company. Plant it as I demonstrate in the video and next July you will have a nice crop of garlic. ❤️
I won the lottery finding your videos! I will see everything you have, I have a big garden but so discouraging because the soil is like sand and trees don't take off great, uses to much water and I would like to make those wood beads to start to plant. Thank you so much
I plant garlic in containers in the fall in western NY near buffalo. I cut blue 55 gal barrels into three containers. They do great thru the winter. I have magic and German purple stripe.
Glad to see you at to OCD as I'm that way also. So I understand why you do things the way you want to. I totally agree. Thanks for sharing 🙋👓👌💞🐾👌 Julie. St Paul, MN
Hello Hall, I talked with a local gardener today. I bought from him sprouting garlic for planting. He told me that when stems reach 10 cm I should break them off in half. In this way garlic bulbs will grow by 30% larger than if I did not do it. I share with you this information as it may be useful. - Best regards - Ed
Excellent video!! I live in West TN (zone 7b, I think), just north of Memphis. I'm not able to garden like I used to, as I'm pushing 71, so I'll have to plant in 5 gallon buckets from my local home improvement store. I love garlic, so I'm going to give it a try.
NG B please make sure it's a good rated bucket. You can buy these at Walmart I've heard it's in the pets section. Or you can buy from the deli. Ask if they have any pickle buckets they need to get disposed? :) I pray that God Blesses the Harvest. And if possible, please take vitamin c to prevent illness of flu or Covid 19.
I've planted some from the supermarket which I realize may not make it through the winter but I also have some Korean I got last weekend. Planning to plant that this week.
I stumbled upon your walla walla onion video, and was thinking you sounded pretty Newport News. Then I saw your boat and the brick rancher. As a life-long Newport News fella myself, I chuckled when I heard you give it away at the beginning of this video! I venture to say there are lots more of us gardening these days, but I've always enjoyed it. You could say it runs in the family. Here's to a bumper crop and tight lines!
I lOVE the OCD Reference in gardening...I wonder if most Garden folks are OCD...I know that I like order in the vegetable garden too. Great frugal information.

It has also made me want to put God first in everything I do. You guys have inspired me so much. Thank you!!! God Bless
Peace to you Lesia❤️. God bless you and your family.
GodBless you both and your crop of garlic❤️🇺🇸
This is so informative. I had no idea about the size of the garlic. I will do the same with the large and small cloves. Thanks.
+Rhonda Davis
Best of luck to you with your tasty garlic👍
I was watching aome of your older uploades and thinking that look familiar and it is because you where right around the corner
Just popping in to say HI, and get the recipe (again) for the super sauce
you soak your Garlic Cloves in. Short term memory isn't my long suit anymore!
Still haven't had a frost this year. Going to their Winter home tomorrow.
Hope all is well with you both. Thanks as always for sharing your knowledge.😊

Thank you so much for this video on growing garlic. I really enjoyed how simple you made it and it was fun.. After work i will be headed home to get them planted. Yall keep up the great work.
Fantastic video. I had no idea it was that much work to plant garlic.
Yes! Great tip! Don't buy from retail stores, I did and they didn't grow well. That includes onions and potatoes!
Baker Creek Seed is AWESOME!! Jere and his wife Emilee (owners) are some pretty nice people too! Their storefront is about an hour and a half away from us. It is where I get all my seed! Thank you for such informative videos!
+Dr. Carla Northcott
Thanks for watching! Baker Creek is by far my favorite seed supplier. You probably heard me mention Baker Creek in several of my videos. They are a quality company and have some really cool seeds!
I'm going to try that soaking of garlic cloves before planting this year. Thanks for the great info.
Any time!
Love them straight rows!
Thanks
God bless you and the hand of your work
I planted garlic for the first time ever yesterday.

Seems like everyone has there way of growing garlic. I don't do the garlic in the freezer bit, some people swear by it. Do what works for you
I dug mine up in July and they looked like a repeating onion. No cloves at all, just something that looked like an onion.
+6996katmom
Buy your garlic from a good source. Don't buy from A box store or grocery store. Buy some high quality garlic from someone like Baker Creek Seed Company. Plant it as I demonstrate in the video and next July you will have a nice crop of garlic. ❤️
Will do, thanks.

Thanks for watching Tom👍.
I won the lottery finding your videos! I will see everything you have, I have a big garden but so discouraging because the soil is like sand and trees don't take off great, uses to much water and I would like to make those wood beads to start to plant. Thank you so much
Welcome to the family ❤️❤️🐶
Just planted garlic for the first time. I'm in NC.
Hey .. u two .. God bless ya , Moniee-Mon is listening thanks for the info 🤔💞🙏💯
Hollis, thanks for sharing. I learns a lot how to garden tips.
I plant garlic in containers in the fall in western NY near buffalo. I cut blue 55 gal barrels into three containers. They do great thru the winter. I have magic and German purple stripe.
That is awesome!
I love the garlic peg board. What a neat idea. Gonna make one. Thanks. Bless you
Loved your video, it was exactly what I needed to be more confident in planting my garlic.

Thank you so much for watching and your words of encouragement !! 😍😍😍
I live in Pa and will try the fall planting. My spring planting was very small. I use popsicle sticks for the markers.
+Fran Pipkin
Good idea Fran👍. I plant both fall and spring
Hello Hall,
I talked with a local gardener today. I bought from him sprouting garlic for planting. He told me that when stems reach 10 cm
I should break them off in half.

I’m really enjoying your video, thank you for posting.
I've planted some from the supermarket which I realize may not make it through the winter but I also have some Korean I got last weekend. Planning to plant that this week.

❤️❤️❤️😇😇😇
I stumbled upon your walla walla onion video, and was thinking you sounded pretty Newport News. Then I saw your boat and the brick rancher. As a life-long Newport News fella myself, I chuckled when I heard you give it away at the beginning of this video! I venture to say there are lots more of us gardening these days, but I've always enjoyed it. You could say it runs in the family. Here's to a bumper crop and tight lines!
I lOVE the OCD Reference in gardening...I wonder if most Garden folks are OCD...I know that I like order in the vegetable garden too. Great frugal information.
LOL. You may be OCD and not know it🤣❤️
@@HollisNancysHomestead YES.....I do know it....That's why I got a good laugh out of it.....Fits me to a T.
