As for Toa, the novels don't say a lot more than we get here, but it's made clear they tested out various drugs on her and "used her" in other ways. So yeah, there would have been a lot of corpses if Makoto had been there. Fun novel fact: there was actually a second girl who asked Makoto out shortly after Hasegawa. He turned both of them down because he didn't have any particular feelings for them and wanted to just focus on living his life (remember he spent most of his early life near death's door). Later he regretted being so blunt with them and did seem to have some feelings for Hasegawa that might have developed if not for the Goddess pulling him away. If I remember correctly, the second girl was the captain of the archery club and also wanted to make Makoto the captain after she graduated, which goes to show just how impressive people found his skills.

I don't want to leave many spoilers but, your thoughts and insights are good. The WN went more into Toa later, and Archery club Senpai also originally had a little more importance. That shouldn't spoil anything, just give a teaser to watch subsequent seasons to see how it plays out. The journey in this series is fantastic.
Im glad they did tone him down because when the episode where the hyumans come to the demiplane is so much harder now. Like you think he's an easy going guy with a bit of a temper but you dont realize how dark he can get. Im excited when he sees that episode honestly.

A little fun fact they don't go over in the anime but do in the manga and WN. The horse(s) pulling the wagon is actually a bicorn, a monster from the wasteland. They have the ability to hide their horns. Also, Makoto cal talk to them like he can with everyone/everything else. So he really does need Rinon to drive the wagon, but it would be very weird for others to see him "talking" to the horse. Later on in the WN he doesn't care anymore if people see him talking with animals so he doesn't hide it.
6:44 The shortsword she's talking about is actually the transparent one Makoto used to cut the tree in a previous episode. It's crazy how close she is to it without knowing.
This show was definetly a surprise when i first watched it and im glad you are enjoying it! It can be a bit fast in its pacing but its a very enjoyable show
