I watched more than a half dozen videos on how dominos is played before coming across yours. Wish I would have found yours first, would have saved me a ton of time. Thank you!
Regarding playing all four sides of the first double domino that is laid down, Chris just clarified this to me that it occurs on every round of a game, even if it's not the first domino laid down, as after the first round that domino could be just a regular non-double, and a player afterwards could lay down a double, and that double is the 4-way playable piece: As he stated: "So the first double laid down in any round gets the 4 sided attribute, it doesn't matter if it comes after the first player's turn. That's the standard way to play by the rules, but sometimes house rules say otherwise." - Thanks Chris!
I love Dominoes! One of the most important strategies is to count the pieces and guessing which ones the other players have, sometimes you lose but when you win it feels awesome! 😎 Great game!
Same, then last year a group of delivery guys started playing dominos next to my work at the park. Been hangin out and smokin a doobie with them now multiple times a week for a year. Love the game🙂
For some reason, all the other youtube tutorials on dominoes are either confusing or just flat out wrong with their rules explanation. It was to the point where I got so frustrated that I started to hate the game without even playing it. Thank you for making it easy to understand.
We always had dominoes as kids, but no one ever showed us how to play. This is the first time I've ever seen the rules. So what did we do with all those dominoes people kept buying for us? (wow, I just had to look this up because I never knew the name for it!): domino toppling I feel like I just learned a lot more than I usually do on a Friday night. I had better stop now. Thanks, Chris!
Thanks for the explanation... I've binged your videos and now have at least one app for every game you've covered. As a trucker, they're great for down time when I have nothing to do but sit and wait, so I have plenty of time to -play with myself- play games by myself. Do you see yourself branching into Eastern games in the future? Pai Gow is a game that uses a totally different set of dominoes (some casinos have it), Mahjong is similar to gin rummy and uses a set of tiles (cards exist), several dice games come to mind (Jhandi Munda/SEE BO/fish, prawn, crab), and a variety of games exist for Hanafuda and Kabufuda decks. If it isn't in your plans, then I hope it stays in your back pocket in case you ever think you've run short on ideas.
Lol, thanks! I only wish I could find a way to make them faster. Ideally I will film all the games that you can play with simple pieces. I really enjoy Mahjong, I played it a lot on the PC as a kid. Here's to hoping I can get around to some of those games! Thanks for watching.

He used lines, crosses and circles. It was all too much. What you explained is what we were looking for. Thanks so much!
Thank you for this tutorial! I used to play as a kid with my grandma all the time. Bought my daughter and I set to play with and I blanked out on the finer rules (how many to start with, how to win). Thanks again!!!

Trying to decipher Hoyle's brought us here 😂. Thank you for your clear instructions, we look forward to trying other domino game variants on your channel.
Perhaps if the laid out dominoes were different but in the case of what was laid out in this example, holding the 3-5 would give less options than more. For example if you instead played the 4-4 and your opponent played off of the 3 side of the 3-6 and left a number that was neither 3 nor 5 you would be forced to take dominos from the boneyard next turn.
Excellent question, which ever player has the domino with the highest pip value (add the top and bottom values) would begin if no one has a double (heavy). Thanks for the kind words and for watching!
@@Play-In-Games Thanks so much for the super-quick reply. Follow-up question. If the person who starts does not play a double, but rather, their highest pip-value domino, what happens when someone subsequently plays the first double of the game? Can it be played on all four sides (because it was the first double played in the game) or can it only be played on the two ends (because it was not the first domino played)? Thank you!
Great explanation of the rules. Thank you for that. I do have a question though regarding scoring. If there are still dominoes left in the boneyard, but neither player has a playable piece and must pass, how does the scoring work? Is that the same as the stalemate when all of the boneyard is used up?
Yea, great question. As long as there are dominoes in the boneyard players can take dominoes one at a time until they have a playable domino, and they can’t pass until the boneyard is empty. Once the boneyard is empty and all players pass, a stalemate occurs and no scoring is possible. I hope that makes senses. Thanks!
Hi, I’m new to dominos. Isn’t the piece you are moving due to no space at 3:51 wrong? Because its 6&4 and the piece after is 5&4 or doesn’t the order matter?
As noted in the video’s description… Correction: At 03:58, there is an error with the 4/5 sequence; it was reversed and mistakenly played off of. If such an error occurred during actual gameplay, that move would be invalid. However, for the purposes of this tutorial, please disregard it as it does not affect the main demonstration. If this mistake bothers you, I sincerely apologize for any confusion.
In Albania we don’t give the chanche to play in four directions. You can play only into the start and into the finish of the train 😁 Very nice tutorial Love your videos 🎈🎈🎈
Thanks for the comment! The rules of dominoes can change from region to region, however the prevailing rule with doubles is that only the first double laid down can use all four sides. Make sure you agree on the rules before you begin. Thanks for for watching Bloomer!
@@Play-In-Games When a game is allowing the first double to be played on all four sides…Is it a rule that BOTH sides must be matched at the crease (to create the main line of play) BEFORE the option is available to match the first double at the top and bottom?
@@emmabritten9307 Great question. From what I know, yes the creased sides must first be used before the numbered ends. Let me know if you hear other wise. Thanks for watching!
Yes, you are correct, it was an error. It wasn’t really the point of the tutorial at that part of the video, but I can see how some people might get tripped up by it. Noted in the description and wish I could upload a correction without taking down the whole video, but that’s not possible with UA-cam. Please accept my apology for any confusion! Thanks for watching.
Hi! Thank you for the video. I have been getting into dominos with my buddy lately and we also play dominos the same, except players can also score by having a trail ending summation of dots being a multiple of 5. I hope that makes sense, but say the first player of the game lays down a 5-5, they also get 10 points. We also round points up or down to the nearest 5. Do you have a video on that domino version? If so, I would like to learn more about different strategies.
I just saw the comment about “all 5s”… I think it is a really cool version as well, because it adds so much more of a challenge. Thanks again for the video. Nice dominos
Thanks for the nice comment. I hope to get the video I shot for the All Fives edited and out. I’m a very slow editor though! Thanks for watching and enjoy playing!
After seeing this played so often over the years on Coronation Street and not understanding what was going on, I feel embarrassed in the fact it is so simple!
An alternative way to start a game(instead of using the highest double domino) is to have each player pick one domino from the pile. The player that has the most pips(spots) on their domino starts the game first. The next player to the left of the starting player will start the second round, and so on moving in a clockwise direction(to the left). The player that downs(to start a round/hand) may play any domino they wish. This rotation of the start of a round/hand is called "rotate the down."
Is there a different name for dominoes played like this (only take points from the end) versus dominoes where we’re getting points off the multiples of 5?
I’m not aware of a proper name other than dominoes but I’m sure there must be many regional names. The name for the multiple of 5’s Dominoes is generally called “All Fives.” Hope that helps.
Mexican Train is SOOOO fun! Great group game - it gets intense 😂 BUT honestly, what are THE rules? The set I have (from Target) has bare instructions leaving so many “what if” scenarios. Would love to officially learn from you!
You’re absolutely right, it’s very fun once you get a handle on it. All the rules give me pause for trying to teach it though. I’m doing Cribbage now and that’s giving me enough of a headache. Perhaps I’ll try it on the next round. Thanks for watching!
I'd prefer that, if a player doesn't get a playable domino from the Boneyard, they pass the turn. That way they won't necessarily stack up multiple unplayable dominoes. Then again, drawing multiple times in a row is a funny "oh man!" moment when playing with friends.
Still seeing Red Dead 2 Domino plays where you do math all the time is more exiting way to play to score with end values. Much faster to get to hundred or two hundred tho 🤔
@@Play-In-Games true!
