Thank you for your terrific video, it is just super. I remember having to shorten my future sister-in-law's wedding dress (at a time when UA-cam tutorials were not in existence 😮). It was the most nerve-wracking job as I was not an experienced sewer at the time. I approached the task by measuring how much it needed to be shortened, cut it and then tried to create a rolled hem. I did get the dress done but I think I aged 10 years in the process and swore never to undertake anything like that again. Now, after seeing your video it makes so much sense. Great job 😁
Thank you so much for your wonderful feedback! Such a shame you didn't have this video all those years ago! It can be so stressful altering wedding dresses! No going back once you've used the scissors.😂
This is exactly what I needed! I am making a circle skirt from scratch with a chiffon top layer that I was really struggling to do a rolled hem on. Thankfully I cut the skirt too long, so I should have enough fabric at the bottom to do it this way.
Thank you so much for this. It worked great. I had to shorten a bridesmaid dress for a friend that was 3 layers and exactly like this. It turned out perfect.
I too, was dreading the shortening chore. Thank you for sharing this brilliant technique….so slick, easy and painless! Took me more time to iron the packing wrinkles out. Can't thank you enough!
THANK YOU FOR THIS! I have tried this type of hem on several different dresses and several different ways. I have tried those rolled hem pressor feet, and other ways. It always took so long, and never just looked professional, or even. I tried this on a friends bridesmaids dress just now and was able to get it done and return it back to her as she left work. It was so simple and quick, I couldn't even believe it! I will be using this technique every time now! THANK YOU FOR SHARING!

@@HouseofMissSewI have a question, I’m hemming a bridesmaid dress that is also three layers but has a slit. How do I do the side seems where the slits are?? I’m not confident in that part at all. HELP thank you
@@andreaf5765 I would mark up the hem and alter as shown in the video. Take a look at the finish on the hem at the slits and try to replicate this at each slit by neatly turning up the hem. It may help to add a little hand stitching at the ends if you need to. It’s likely that the slit has been finished first and then the hem is finished last so you’re still sewing everything in the same order. Depending on how much you’ve taken off the length you may need to open the slits further. It would be easier to avoid this to save complicating things but it just depends on the length and position of the slit once you’ve altered the hem. ☺️
Thank you so much for this video! Coincidentally my daughters dress I had to hem was almost identical to the dress in the video. You made it easy to follow. I am not one to sew only when I have to!! @@HouseofMissSew I first refused to alter the hem, but your demo illustration made it look quite easy. So, my next quest will be finding the right thread and the correct sewing machine needle. Any suggestions?
Thank you so much for this!! My best friends wedding is in a couple of weeks and my shoes JUST came in the mail, this will be super helpful when hemming 💕
Thank You! Thank YOU! I was scared to death cutting my niece's bridesmaid dress.. I cannot believe its the same exact dress as yours. I feel confident now!
Would fabric tape be applicable to chiffon material? I’m worried about what foot and tension to use on chiffon that it would be narrow enough. What type thread and size needle. I haven’t sewn 5:20 in years , although I did formals for my girls, a million years ago😅 help! 😊
You’re welcome ☺️ The best tip is to measure, mark and stitch first before you trim off the excess fabric. It’s so much easier that way. This dress was one of 3 bridesmaid dresses that I altered recently. The hems totalled almost 30 metres of fabric! 😩 Hope yours goes well 🤞
So glad I found this video. Such helpful tips on how to do this hem. I’m working on a bridesmaid dress and this will make it so much easier. Thank you!
Thank you for sharing this tip! It save me so much time and stress! I hate hems but need to overcome that feat and this video helped tremendously! Thank you!
Two weeks for my daughter's wedding. Her two bridesmaids dresses had to be shortened. Was a bit stressed out how to do it. Thank you so much for that teaching.❤
I have just finished hemming an entire bridal party - plus brides dress. I haven’t sewn on this type garment for decades. Your video made my job so much easier! I did 8 adult gowns, two bridesmaids and mother of the bride pantsuit! Then brides gown and bustle! Still have the knack at 72!😁
Oh my goodness!!!! I hem A LOT of these and this should work perfectly. The problem with even just stitching one time, trimming, then rolling is the material stretches or frays and it is too easy to make an uneven or wonky hem. Hope this works when only hemming the front of a dress that angles to the sides, therefore creating a bias section.
I’ve not tried only hemming one side but hopefully the method will work for you 🤞 I find it’s so much easier than trimming first and have had no issues with hems stretching out of shape (which would happen if I did a normal rolled hem approach!) ☺️
Givving this a try. Thankfully, there are 3 layers, I hope I am proficient by the time I get to the outter layer! Thanks for the technique, I would never thought to keep excess un til first stitching is done.
That was great! I've watched several vids and decided - I CAN'T DO THAT! Then as about to give up, I clicked on you. I have a sewing machine that I do simple alterations and pillow cases for the cat shelter and that's about all I can accomplish but I had an idea in my mind how I might hem these beautiful chifon duster without ruining it and it was exactly what you formulated and showed me how to do in an easy peasy way. Thanks so much! I don't sew much but going to subscribe because you really helped me. :^D p
thank you for this lovely tutorial!! two quick questions from a newbie sewist: 1. what is "right side" and "wrong side"? is right side the outside of the garment and wrong side the inside? 2. how do you "back tack" at the end? my machine only pulls the fabric one way (brother SE600 I think) and I don't want to break a needle by attempting to get it to move backwards without any guidance first haha
Thank you for your feedback ☺️ You’re correct, the ‘right side’ is the outside of the garment and ‘wrong side’ is inside the garment. Back tacking is to take a few stitches back and forth to secure the stitching at the start and end of sewing. Your machine may have a button to press to secure stitching. Hope that helps 😊
Thank you so much for this video! I’ve always cut before making the hem and my machine would grab the threads of the chiffon and bunch them, making the dress look terrible. Does this technique stop that?
I’ve tried both ways and it’s much easier to cut after you’ve stitched. You have more control over the fabric and it’s easier to handle. I think this method would avoid the bunching that you describe 🤞🤞
I’ve got to do this to my wedding dress which is identical to the one you are altering only white. I’m going to have a little less to take off but I need as much as possible because I’m going to make a tiered short sleeve with the off cut.
Oh my gosh you are a lifesaver I told a friend I could hem her garment I had no idea it was a bridesmaid dress just like the pretty teal one in your video lol seriously I would have told her just have the shop you bought it from hem it but here I am lol. I have a question I noticed on her skirt towards about 1 1/2 inches from the bottom on both side hems of the dress are stay chains/ tack chains, its like holding the chiffon and satin together so they don't separate a lot?? should I add these on to the new hem or just say forget it and not worry about it? Its like when you buy a trench coat or really nice garment and they tack the pockets closed (does that make sense?). Thank you so much for your video I really appreciate it. You now have another subscriber for life :)
I’m so pleased I could help you ☺️ You can leave off the thread chains/ swing tacks as the layers will probably stay in the right place without needing them. But, if you want to add them back in, I have another video showing how to sew a thread chain. You can find it here: ua-cam.com/video/RsYbwPUBL8M/v-deo.html I hope that helps ✂️😀
I’m sorry, I don’t have any shoulder shortening videos. Depending on the style you can unpick the previous seam and re sew this at the correct position. Depending on the layers it can be a little tricky. For a quick fix just stitch the seam where you need it to be (without any unpicking) and then sew the part of the strap that is excess along the sides to hold it in place. I did this for my own bridesmaid when I had only a few hours left before the wedding to fit the dress correctly!
I feel like I could do this!! Have a bridesmaid dress I need to hem and have a tight budget! I do some sewing, but never a hem before! Are you marking and sewing on the outside or inside of the dress?
You can do this! Just take your time, measure and cut carefully. 😊 I’m marking onto the right side of the fabric, then folding along that line so the wrong sides come together, then I stitch on the right side. Once the fabric is trimmed I fold the fabric and sew from the wrong side to make sure I’m stitching along the edge of the fold correctly. Good luck 🤞
Thank you so much for this video, you just saved my life! I have been recovering from an injury and I haven’t had money or time to get anything done for my brother’s wedding. Not cutting the hem is genius, and definitely easier for someone like me who hasn’t sewn in a while. I’m curious if it’ll still work okay if I don’t have an iron? I’d get one if I could afford the extra spending, but funds are low from being on medical leave.
Thank you! I’m so pleased I could help. I think you’ll probably be snoring to get away with not ironing it. Maybe a neighbour / friend could lend you one for a few hours to make it a bit easier. 🤞
Thank you so much for your excellent tutorial. I sew a lot but have almost zero experience of chiffon and agreed to take up a prom dress 🤪so really needed to watch your video. I had already purchased a rolled hem foot thinking I needed that but it looks like you did it with a standard foot? Do you have any views on a rolled hem foot (like/dislike) or do you just think it’s not necessary? Really appreciate your thoughts, thank you!!
Thank you for such wonderful feedback! A standard foot is best for this method. I’ve hemmed chiffon with a rolled hemming foot but it can be more fiddly and depending on your experience of using the foot and working with chiffon it can end up creating a wavy or stretched out hem. For slippery fabrics, particular those on the bias I find a standard foot easier. I’ve made 2 other videos on how to do a rolled hem with the rolled hemming foot and one using a different method and a standard foot. Let me know if you need more help ☺️
Hi house of miss sew. I found the tutorial very useful as i'm new to sewing. please can you tell me which thread and which needle i should use for chiffon. thankyou
If only I could have measured up x amount all the way around on multiple layers. I had to have her stand and mark it all the way around because it was uneven and had a train in the back. Thank you though. It looks great. I'll try the sewing then cutting method though. Thank you.
Hi, thanks for your brilliant idea ! Unfortunately for me I sewed all three layers with the right sides together. Ugh. Is there any way to save it or do I need to rip it all out and start again?
Oh no! 😩 If it looks ok sewed this way round I’d just leave it. It’s not going to be a nice job to unpick it all. Or, if you can lose a little more of the length you could turn up another hem to save unpicking.
@@HouseofMissSew I don’t know you , you don’t know me , I don’t know where this idea came from but I want to say thanks for sharing this simple quick and clear way of doing this hem on these dresses.
I’m so pleased I could help you ☺️
You can leave off the thread chains/ swing tacks as the layers will probably stay in the right place without needing them. But, if you want to add them back in, I have another video showing how to sew a thread chain. You can find it here:
ua-cam.com/video/RsYbwPUBL8M/v-deo.html
I hope that helps ✂️😀
Can't wait to try this as I am beginner to all of this. Do you have any tutorials on shortening shoulders on formal chiffon dress?
I’m marking onto the right side of the fabric, then folding along that line so the wrong sides come together, then I stitch on the right side. Once the fabric is trimmed I fold the fabric and sew from the wrong side to make sure I’m stitching along the edge of the fold correctly.
Good luck 🤞
Thank you! I think you just saved my life today!
So pleased I could help! 😊
Thank you so much! Wow, it is so much easier than I anticipated!
Thank you for watching! Glad I could help make it easy for you ☺️
Thanks for making it simple and understandable. Best video I've seen so far!
What a amazing tutorial!!!!! Love it! Can’t wait to try it!
Thank you so much! Happy sewing ✂️😀
I can’t believe i found this after i cut the top layer. Oh well. I know for next time.
Can you share with this newbie what stitch settings to use while using this technique?
I used a 2.5mm stitch length and a 70/10 universal needle.
Awesome..thank you for solving a nightmare.
You’re welcome 😊
SO helpful!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!😊
You’re most welcome 😊
What everyone else said! Thank you thank you thank you
Thank you! ☺️
Positively brilliant. Thank you so much!
Thank you ☺️
Love your video! I am a beginner. What stitch width and length did you use?
Thank you for watching 😊
I used a straight stitch of length 2.5mm
@@HouseofMissSew Just finished my bridesmaid dress! Thank you so much!
@ no problem 😌
This is how I do it. Only I don’t always go by measuring from the bottom. Many hems are no even. I mark while on the client end finish a a dress form
Hi house of miss sew. I found the tutorial very useful as i'm new to sewing. please can you tell me which thread and which needle i should use for chiffon. thankyou
Hi, I’m so pleased you found this useful. I used a universal size 70/10 needle and sew all polyester thread.
@@HouseofMissSew THANKYOU
planning to make a red chiffon dress with handkerchief skirt for 2025 The Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever. This video is so helpful! Thanks :)
Ooh! Sounds amazing 🤩
Good luck with your project 😊
Great technique, my dress looks beautiful 😍 thank you so much 😊 ❤️
Thank you so much! I’m so pleased that this worked for you ☺️
Thanks for this - so helpful! You’ve got a new subscriber as a result 🎉 thanks 🙏
Brilliant 🤩 thank you ☺️
If only I could have measured up x amount all the way around on multiple layers. I had to have her stand and mark it all the way around because it was uneven and had a train in the back. Thank you though. It looks great. I'll try the sewing then cutting method though. Thank you.
Hopefully this method will still help. 🤞 Good luck with all the layers ☺️
That is briliant!
Thank you! ☺️
Awesome tutorial! 👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you! ☺️
Hello! Do you have a certain type of thread and needle you recommend for chiffon?
I used a sew all polyester thread and a universal size 70/10 needle 😊
Thanks I’m nervous to do my daughters prom dress
Good luck! Don’t cut anything off until you know it’s right 🤞
excellent video. Thank you
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching 😊
Excellent tutorial.
what thread would you use for this type of fabric please.
I used a sew all polyester thread.
@@HouseofMissSew thank you
Excellent method of not cutting first!
Thank you ☺️
Do you have a video of pinning? I feel like a miss the mark with pinning. Sometimes the back is shorter than the front due to the bottom.
Hi, I don’t have a video on how I pin up the dress before altering. I usually just take the same amount off all the way round.
Hi, thanks for your brilliant idea ! Unfortunately for me I sewed all three layers with the right sides together. Ugh. Is there any way to save it or do I need to rip it all out and start again?
Oh no! 😩
If it looks ok sewed this way round I’d just leave it.
It’s not going to be a nice job to unpick it all.
Or, if you can lose a little more of the length you could turn up another hem to save unpicking.
@@HouseofMissSew Thank you!
Yes all done! It went well.
Brilliant 🤩👏👏
Thank you for this method Please can you make the corner on chiffon scarf for us?
Thanks very much.
I’ll add that to my list of videos to make 😀… it’s a very long list though so it might take a while😕
Wish i knew this back in the day. Fandabidosy
Perfect explanation!
Thank you! ☺️
Genius !!! Will try, wish me the best 🙏😁
You’ve got this ☺️
@@HouseofMissSew I don’t know you , you don’t know me , I don’t know where this idea came from but I want to say thanks for sharing this simple quick and clear way of doing this hem on these dresses. I have sewn dresses before (long time ago with patterns and watching sewers since I was a kid) but fixing dresses with these materials have never been an easy thing to do and I had a dress I never fixed because I was afraid of damaging the dress 👗. Well , I started with a dress I’m planing to wear tomorrow and thanks to you I did it! 😃 I’m ready to tackle the other dress ☺️ Thanks again for sharing this for free. 🙃
@@bsantiago945 you’re welcome! It makes it so much easier than other methods I’ve seen 😀
@@HouseofMissSew I agree with you 100 %
I am working on the se type of gown, my granddaughter’s prom dress it is way too long and I had to cut it off, it was very crooked before I cut it off, now I am struggling with putting the hem I. It.
Did you manage to finish the hem?
I wish I am taller but wish cannot be granted 😂. I can only learn to sew. I'm a short woman, all dresses are 8-10" longer than me😏😢. This video is awesome.
Thank you so much for your comment! I have the opposite issue and am too tall! 😂 Most clothes aren’t long enough for me!
What tension settings did you use for Chiffon Fabric? What about needle size? Thank you. I am about to try your idea. Wish me luck
I used my regular tension settings and a size 70/10 universal needle. ☺️
And good luck!! 😀
@@HouseofMissSew Would a 70/10 work? I do not seem to find any 70/12 anywhere I google. Thanks. I assume yes, but sorry for the dumb questions. I'm a new sewist.
@@adelaidanilo3362 yes, sorry! I made a typo. 70/10 is correct! ☺️
Purchased a maxi chiffon dress and tried it on. Unfortunately, it’s little big on me. Too nervous to fix it myself. It’s for a wedding and don’t want to return it or screw it up.
It can be a little scary to work with chiffon. Hopefully you have someone local to you who could adjust your dress if you don’t want to do it yourself.
