I am in fashion school for the degree. UA-cam won't give me that but helps brush up my skills as well as teaching me new things. So both school and UA-cam have their place in my journey. 🙂
As someone who went to school for fashion and even use to teach sewing. I need a refresher every now and then. THIS video is absolutely PERFECT! It’s clear, simple and to the point. I love and so grateful!
I was looking for a quick tutorial on how to do this stitch as it had been several years since I'd utilized it. I gotta say: I love this video!! Short, precise, and to the point. No unnecessary backstory. Thank you for sharing!!!
THANK YOU! Your tutorial was perfect for hemming my daughter's prom dress that had a 1" wide structured interfacing in the hem. I was able to fold and press it over as you showed and the invisible hem looks so good! You are a lifesaver because I could not find any instructions on hemming that kind of gown. Great easy-to-follow instructions too! Have a great day!
Hi, if you start at the other end from what they have, anchor your thread as they do and then insert your needle into the top rolled part of the hem so that you can't see your needle and then bring the needle back out about three quarters of an inch further along the hem and then catch the couple of threads of the dress itself and then back into the top of the hem again and repeat this until you are back to the starting place and anchor it again. This will give you a proper invisible stitch as the only part of the cotton that is visible is the stitches that attach to the dress. If you only take a couple of threads it should be invisible on the front of the dress as well. The secret to the rolled hem is not to try and fold too much fabric into the rolled hemmer and to hold the dress firmly with your fingers on the bed of the machine a couple of inches away from where the foot is while letting the rolling part of the hem feed through fairly loosely. If you hold the rolling part too tightly it will want to go straight and not around the curve as it should. Only doing a couple of inches at a time will give you more control as well.
THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOOO MUCH!!! THIS SAVED MY PLEATED SCHOOL SKIRT! The instructions and demonstration are clear and easy to understand. Thx soooo much you're a lifesaver : )))))
This is the best video for hem ! Before writing this comment, I came across a UA-cam video in Hindi language; that video was not worth watching even one single time. And, one of the viewer of that video had commented , one year ago, to make the hem/turpai video again, as it was not clearly visible. The maker of that Hindi video did not even bother to answer to the comment. I read that comment, just few minutes before ! But, before watching that video in Hindi, I had watched this video! So, instantly, I shared the link of this video on hem with the viewer of that Hindi video! Please, keep making videos like this one on sewing or on anything you think people should know of! All the best!
Thank you so much. I bought an outfit that was delivered last minute. I woke up at 4am this morning to figure out how to hem the pants... your video is so easy to follow thank you!
So helpful! I took a gorgeous pair of trousers to a tailors to be hemmed and he has absolutely butchered them! I can't believe how badly he's done them. I am going to get him to remove the stitching he's done and do them myself with this video
I have been sewing for more than 50 years, I started in Jr. High School. I would never hem any garment with the catch stitch in this video! Back in the day we were taught that a properly hemmed garment that looked like it was professionally done was made with stitches that were hidden. I always referred to the stitch that I used as a blind stitch but I just did a bit of googling and I found that the stitch I am referring to is a slip stitch. Google says that a catch stitch is used for tacking or hemming lined garments. It is a zig zag stitch that helps prevent your fabric from fraying along the edges. The stitch in this video would work to hem garments but if you are going to take the time to hand stitch why not make both sides of the garment look neat and professional?
Thanks for this! I had an undone hem on one of my pant legs and couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t see the hem on the other leg. This video gave me the answer as well as the steps necessary to replicate it pretty closely. It wasn’t perfect but it’ll definitely do and looks infinitely better than before I watched this video. ❤️👍
Thank youuu! I’m making a pleated tennis skirt and I’m actually using this stitch to sew the waistband because I don’t want to top stitch with a sewing machine🙂
I love this tutorial!!! Simple but clear in giving instruction. I'm wondering, is this invisible hemming hand stitch also be done in professional garment or only just for personal use? I find it really neat and sleek on my dress from the outer but not as great as when we buy cloth on store (sometimes I saw double stitch too) and I have no idea how to hem wider, sleeker and neater with machine. To be honest I love the result of this handstitch.
This is visible hemming, the thread is visible from the inside part and not outside (as shown in the video above). In invisible hemming, the thread is invisible from both sides (inside and outside).
I love that stitch but I know it as the Herringbone stitch. The catch stitch is worked from right to left without the little x at each stitch where the thread crosses over. The hem allowances are too wide for a nice drape with most fabrics, hems look so much more professional with a narrower allowance or better yet a rolled hem on the machine. Just my opinion.
i love sewing but my school has recently asked me to do some alterations on some uniforms we can’t cut so i suggested an “invisible” stitch, something i cant do lol 😭 so im learning and doing it on some scraps i have lying around before i do big mistake on the uniforms
Thank you for this! I have one question if you wouldn’t mind answering! Do you find that this stitching holds up to washing the finished garment in a washing machine?
Thanks for showing this. Great video. Do you have any idea why my pants are always bulging in the front? The crotch area. They always do. Even tailored made.
I have two beautiful dresses of heavy knit material. I so dislike the look of machine-sewn hems! I have always used this hem stitch--though the inside of yours is far prettier than mine!!--but have never worked with knits. What is your opinion, please, on hand-hemming knitted fabric?
I'm currently wasting a fortune on fashion school to learn so much more quickly from UA-cam... oh how funny life is. Thank you
Been to culinary school for 4 years, and here i am learning on youtube aswell
UA-cam has taught me how to cook and yes, I am also learning how to sew.
Same here as a fashion student. My sewing and pattern making classes are making me hate something that is actually quite pleasant to do.
Same 👏🏼
I am in fashion school for the degree. UA-cam won't give me that but helps brush up my skills as well as teaching me new things. So both school and UA-cam have their place in my journey. 🙂

Great tutorial. Simple, straight to the point, no making us wait while we listen to someone's life story. Thanks heaps.

I learned this from my mother but I'm so glad it's here in UA-cam to reach many more people ... Great tutorial!

Great class.❤❤❤❤❤❤
GOD bless you for sharing this
Wonderful video. The only thing I do is use a thimble co's I started handsewing with one that it's difficult working without it.
This is visible hemming, the thread is visible from the inside part and not outside (as shown in the video above). In invisible hemming, the thread is invisible from both sides (inside and outside).
I have to turn a Halloween witch dress with bell sleeves into something I can wear for band concerts, wish me luck lol
Very well demonstrated. Thank you.
Fantastic 👍
this was super easy and useful
Such a helpful video, and with so much detail thank you!
I love that stitch but I know it as the Herringbone stitch. The catch stitch is worked from right to left without the little x at each stitch where the thread crosses over.

Thanks for this👍👍👍
Super helpful, thanks so much 💙
0:24 why do you have to fold it again?
To create the invisible hem
Thanks a lot. Very good post.👌👌👌
Whenever hemming, I aim to take exactly one thread from the layer facing outside but would doing this make the stitch weak?
Very clear. Thank you
If this video didn’t exist, I would’ve wasted more years being too scared to try sewing 😂
Ive been struggling to hem a velvet material as it keeps slipping and going uneven with the machine. Going to give this a try!
i love sewing but my school has recently asked me to do some alterations on some uniforms we can’t cut so i suggested an “invisible” stitch, something i cant do lol 😭 so im learning and doing it on some scraps i have lying around before i do big mistake on the uniforms
I need to hem my jumpsuit that’s a little too long so thank you for this!
Great job
GREAT video!! Thank you for this!
I’m a Bit confused as to why you need to fold the hem twice? Wouldn’t this cause the hem to be twice as large as you originally intended?
It depends on how wide you want it
Beautiful job! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much!! ❤️
Thank you for this! I have one question if you wouldn’t mind answering! Do you find that this stitching holds up to washing the finished garment in a washing machine?
😮 Thanks so much.
Thank you sister.
i need to hem a dress that has really thin fabric, will this still work or will it show?
Thanks for showing this. Great video.
Do you have any idea why my pants are always bulging in the front?
The crotch area. They always do. Even tailored made.
SO helpful 🥰
Thank you very much!
Was that staplers?
Doesn’t look very robust. Would this be suitable for the inside hem of an unlined wool coat?
What kind of fabric is this? In love with the peach tone
hey hey! Does a catch stitch work ok for something a little thinner, like silk?
Does it matter if you go through both layers of the folded edge or not?
Thank You. This is a Life-Saver❤
thank you!
Thank you!
Amazing!!!
Thanks much❤
I have two beautiful dresses of heavy knit material. I so dislike the look of machine-sewn hems! I have always used this hem stitch--though the inside of yours is far prettier than mine!!--but have never worked with knits. What is your opinion, please, on hand-hemming knitted fabric?
Thank you!!!
How safe is this stitch? Can it susttain for longer period of time?
