    Price drops on comics, including grails, are expected for two main reasons. First, during the boom, many comics were overpriced. Second, we're currently in a recession, meaning most people have less disposable income for discretionary purchases like comics. If you do have extra cash, now is a great time to buy grails or key issues below market value. However, be prepared to hold onto them for at least five years to see significant returns, once the economy recovers.

    Anything 25 cents and more cover price shouldn't really be considered a true Grail they're just so common even in high grade

    • @BrooksSeanRobinson
      @BrooksSeanRobinson 2 місяці тому +5

      That’s only because the collector base has shrunk so small, in a fanbase like pokemon collectors bronze age comics numbers would be considered quite rare

    • @alphaomegacomics3550
      @alphaomegacomics3550 2 місяці тому +2

      I disagree, but only slightly. As a generalization, your statement rings truthfully. If instead of stating “Anything 25 cents and more” you said “A large majority of books 25 cents and over” you would have my stamp of approval. Think about the rarity of high grade Giant-Size X-Men 1 copies, for example. Such a major key book in square bound format. A 9.8 or even a 9.6 certainly qualifies as a grail to me.
      That the prices of books from the bronze age and up have fluctuated a great deal doesn’t take away from their grail status in my mind, and I believe most would agree. Golden and Silver Age grails have also fluctuated in recent years. The so called “comic book boom/boon” from 5-7 years ago did some harm to our hobby and the market. Similar to what happened in the 90’s, we had a huge influx of speculators. As time has taught us, speculators are often not collectors. Their departure from the market will always result in an increase in supply and a decrease in demand. The market is still adjusting from this, and we may still see large dips in fmv.
      The silver lining? It’s a great time to be shopping for that elusive grail!

    Wanted to add that there is public sales history for a Malibu Sun 13 9.8 error.
    The yellow label has a recorded public sale a few years back for over $20k.
    It’s in the caption of the Heritage listing, and it was a sale on Heritage. It is also on GPA but you have open the search to more than universal labels.
    I own a 9.8 error so I have an interest in this, but also mentioning simply for the sake of clarity and accuracy.
    Great video!

    Spiderman Platinum is rather rare in 9.8. They have a tendency of having a printer crease keeping it out of high grade. Also, the Malibu Sun is prone to staple rust, especially at the centerfold that you wouldn't see in the case.

    The modern era is going on almost 50 years now. Out of maybe 80 years total since the first Superman. That’s pretty silly. I think it should be 2000 and up.
    While the late 80s through 90s should be called the over print era.

    Books got so expensive during the comic boom because people had more much more money at their disposal during COVID with all the free money the government was giving out, and investors with big money got into the comic book market as the stock market was faltering. Once the free money dried up, and the investors got back into stocks and other investments, comic book prices started to trend down. Now, collectors are just unwilling and unable to pay the prices we saw during the comic boom, and prices have tumbled back to where they were before the boom.

    that 9.8 had a color break in the corner. Very small but there. A 9.8 should have sharp corners, which it does have even with the bent corner. So does the presence of a sharp corner cancel the color break. The mystery of CGC continues.

    • @alphaomegacomics3550
      @alphaomegacomics3550 2 місяці тому +1

      Not for true comic collectors. The print runs were so low for the early issues, and high-grade copies are even scarcer because many were originally purchased by fans/kids who didn’t protect them. Is Nostalgia a factor? Certainly. But the investment potential is solid, regardless of pop-culture status.

    Since the boom that drove prices up, US economy has been inconsistent and not good. Comicbooks is a luxury, people dont have to buy them to survive. Most people have been in survival mode for money and jobs. And people with money are more hesitant during these times. Once economy gets better and consistent, comic books, nike shoes, rolex, luxury cars will sell again at high rates. Which brings higher prices. The rich invest when markets are down. Buy low sale high

    I'll definitely watch this auction, but 99% of the stuff I'm looking at is GA. I want to see how some SA does, but I'm still hoping those tank more. I agree with the Dave Stevens stuff. I really want a copy of his True Love #1 because I love the 80s and that cover is about as 80s as it gets. lol. I think it's overpriced, but that's just me. There are 133 universal copies of which 89 are 9.8's right now. I think I see one being sold every couple of weeks. A CGC 9.8 recently sold for a lot less than GPA prices. I don't think I'll be looking at the stuff you posted in this video, but it's still interesting to watch the price movement of those things. The psychology is so similar to stock trading except maybe far less liquid. You, Swagglehaus, and COMO need to do one of those shows where you guys cover the auctions. That's some of the best stuff you guys do. Maybe Swag will figure out how to decorate his new geek cave by then. Great video with useful general information.

    • @AutomaticComics
      @AutomaticComics  2 місяці тому +6

      Feel like you’re really reaching there for a reason to be offended. But if you’re spending $100k on a comic, your life is probably very minimally impacted by it dropping by $10-20k.
      Also, I didn’t say they don’t care about price, so if you’re going to quote me, please get it right. I said that it probably wouldn’t matter all that much if it dropped in price.
      And if you’re spending $100k on a comic and it dropping $10-20k does really hurt you, you shouldn’t be buying that comic.
