  • After some beautiful days in Hpa-An we decided to try to hitchhike 280 kilometres to Yangon, the former capital of Myanmar. With a hitchhiking letter in Burmese and a sign saying where we were headed we stuck our thumbs out. It didn't take long before we got our first ride, but trying to get our second ride wasn't as smooth and we found ourselves lost in translation, not one, but several times. Fortnunately our luck turned and you'll find out how half way through this video.

    It is good that you guys are introducing hitchhiking culture to Burma, for them who had long been in closed society is a new concept. I also saw a few other foreign tourists doing hitchhiking in Myanmar on UA-cam. But I think being raw people is also a drawcard!

    • @TimezoneJunkies
      @TimezoneJunkies  5 років тому +2

      Yeah we have seen some other videos of people doing it but you are right that it is a pretty new concept to the people of Myanmar. Everyone was very friendly though and happy to help of course! You are right about being raw, too often we see other channels presenting travelling as being a 100% amazing experience all the time. Of course there are days when you don't feel good or you might be in a bad mood, but when you hitchhike and you get to meet all of these wonderful people with big smiles it really puts you in a good place!
      Thanks for watching and commenting! Have you been to Myanmar?

    What a helpful man there! nice! we haven't tried hitchhiking yet, but it's a thing we really wanna try. And Myanmar looks like a good place to hitchhike, right? Useful info! Thanks for sharing!

      Hitchhiking in Myanmar was good and bad. Some routes we decided to take the bus because the infrastructure isn't the best, but generally it's good. Thailand is easier to hitchhike but a little letter in Thai helps to explain what you're doing. Thanks for watching! 🙏

    • @TimezoneJunkies
      @TimezoneJunkies  5 років тому

      Thanks a lot for watching and taking time to comment, but please explain what you mean with communication problems?
      We had no problem communicating in Myanmar, but there was obviously a language barrier at times as we don't speak Burmese and many people we met on the road didn't speak English and HITCHHIKING (going for free in people's cars) isn't an known concept in Myanmar. We like travelling like this. It makes it more challenging and we meet many locals.
      😀

    Where do you find money to travel , anyway,😁

    • @TimezoneJunkies
      @TimezoneJunkies  5 років тому +5

      We don't know why we only have 2000 subs. We really wish we had more. We saved money some years ago, and currently, Alex teaches on the internet. He doesn't earn much but it helps us not spend our money to fast. We're also very cheap when we travel, spend very little and if we're in a country where it's possible we camp and cook ourselves. Thanks so much for watching! 🙏💛

    We came here to know more about Burmese people.
    That’s why we decided not to take the bus and request to ride along with you.

    Great to see you both on the road once again.It sure isn't funny when the driver tells you he'll take you.....and then he drives off! If you say the magic word ''$$$$'... all doors fly open. I think I saw the Budgeteers make the same trip.Again the drivers wanted cash if I remember.In Cambodia they drive over you...ha ha!

    • @TimezoneJunkies
      @TimezoneJunkies  5 років тому +2

      Hehe, quite sure that guy didn't understand that we wanted to go to Tathon with him and this time we actually don't think it was about money. The budgeteers took a bus to Yangon from Hpa-An and hitchhiked from Yangon to Mandalay on the new super highway, so not the same route. The road between Hpa-An and Yangon is mainly a small road half of the way, going between many towns, before it gets a bit bigger before Yangon. Amazing experience although filled with confusion. :) Thanks a million for watching as always!

    Aren't you guys ashamed? You go to a poor country where transportation is cheap, and instead of contributing to the local economy as much as possible, you leach off the locals. Typical BEGPACKERS! I can understand hitchhiking in a super expensive country, but in Myanmar? Come on guys. Have some conscience!

    • @TimezoneJunkies
      @TimezoneJunkies  4 роки тому +4

      Hitchhiking is not about travelling for free but to share your journey with locals and spread love and kindness. It’s actually easier and more comfortable to get a bus but the experiences you gain hitchhiking you can’t get by going on a bus.
      We contribute to the local economy more than most tourists as we don’t go on organised tours but spend our money in small local shops, restaurants and local guest houses instead. We make sure our money goes to the ordinary people, not big tour operators, big hotel chains or just simply down the government’s pocket.
      Thanks for watching and we do see why you might think we are doing something unethical as you simply just don’t understand the concept of hitchhiking and you probably haven’t watched enough of our videos to know who we are and what we do to contribute to the world.
