    Tupolev TU-144LL RA-77114 in flight
    In July, 1983 this aircraft was designated as 101 and established 14 world records. These records were including a height of flight of 18,200 m with payload from 10 to 30 tons, average speed of 2,031.55 km/h on a closed circuit of 1,000 km and 2,012.26 km/h on a closed circuit of 2,000 km.
    When the TU-144 program was cancelled, CCCP-77114 was used as research aircraft in experiments about the radiation in top layers of the atmosphere, ozone layer, thermal influence in different materials and studies on aerodynamics. In 1990 was placed in nonflyable storage.
    In 1993 08-2 was chosen to serve as testbed in a joint program between Tupolev, NASA and others US firms. The aircraft suffered an extensive modification that included the power plant, former Koliesov RD-36-51A engines were replaced by Kuznetsov NK-321 (engines of the TU-160 bomber). The new model was designated TU-144LL Flying Laboratory.

    It's truly amazing what the Russians are capable of building, using 50-60 year old, out dated technology. Unless I'm mistaken, the Soyuz spacecraft are still using vacuum tubes. (To be fair, the Russian vacuum tube is the most advanced vacuum tube ever developed, and their audio equipment is considered to be some of the finest on the planet.)

      Yes, the Svetlana vacuum tubes are highly prized by audiophiles the world over. Also, the 9-channel Kinopanorama sound system, the first to include a track for overhead speakers [half a century before Dolby Atmos], was superior to the 35mm magnetic systems used by Cinerama and CineMiracle.

    Honestly I'm glad the TU144 had another flight. I'm not sure how much work went into getting a plane that had been sitting there since the early 1970s ready to fly, but hats off to NASA and Russia for doing it. There is no telling how much data was gathered just on that one flight, good or bad.

    I do not think the TU-144 was superior to Concorde.
    although the TU-144 looks very nice, it was rushed into production and featured severe and careless errors in the design of systems and the airframe structure. The aircon system was so loud that passengers had to write to each other, it was even more thirsty than Concorde (afterburners were switched on always in the TU-144 I think) and it featured somewhat primitive stopping/braking mechanisms compared to the carbon ceramic brake set up of Concorde. The computer controlled air intake was also more sophisticated on Concorde. One could however say that the TU-144 (with canards) was more aerodynamically accomplished at slower speeds than it's anglo/french rival. The TU-144 was remarkably unreliable, and although Concorde had evident safety issues of it's own, it was the better plane in terms of usability, reliability and engineering sophistication. Looks wise, they both have their own unique qualities that sets them apart.

      Concorde211 Of course you think so. You are Concorde's fan, that's it

    • @qasimmir7117
      @qasimmir7117 6 років тому +4

      Concorde didn't have 'evident safety issues of its own' at all. And the canards were there to supplement the wings because they were poorly designed and performed badly at low speeds, that's why canards are there. And even then it still had a higher landing speed. Concorde was far more aerodynamically accomplished believe me.

    • @mbrazile1
      @mbrazile1 6 років тому +4

      You are correct. The Russians had neither the engineering capability nor the money available to spend and as a result were forced to improvise on the entire wing design, as well as many other concorde features simply being engineered around and not even attempted to replicate.
      TU-144 = one plane I'd never want to fly on.

      No "flaws" per se, as Tu-144 was certified for flight. Concorde had many "flaws" too.

    The Tu144 was superior to Concord on many aspects, hence NASA's choice to use it as a research platform.

    • @seanbaskett5506

      name 1 REAL WORLD advantage the 'Toop had over Concorde. Carrying an extra fifty passengers to Almaty? Whoop dee doo. and don't tell me it was faster. that really doesn't matter.

    • @javiergilvidal1558
      @javiergilvidal1558 6 років тому +3

      So having a far greater passenger capacity and being faster is no "real world" advantage to you? I wonder what your "world" is like, and what you call "real"! As for the Alma-Ata bit, well, I´m sure Concorfdsky would gladly fly to New York if the jealous, mean yanks gave their permission....

    • @TonymanCS
      @TonymanCS 6 років тому +1

      You have absolutely no idea what real- world advantages are, don't you? Carry more pax for flights that weren't even half-hull with per-pax ticket price at the same level as any other sub-sonic jetliner? Flying faster but gulping enormous amount of fuel? In short, Konkordski failed hard. The amount of its advantage is prevailed by countless disadvantages.

      Russian has the TU-160 blackjack similar to a Concorde plane and nearly 30 of them are still flying many hours without accidents!...so if Russia has been able to build the Tu-160 based in Tu-144..it to say that Russia can build a supersonic passanger jet...the problem was that a fly ticket was too expensive even for western people who had to pay 12.000 euros to Fly from London to new York in concorde...imagine russian people paying that amount of money in rubble to Fly Moscow vs new york!

      There are less than 25% of 144 in 160 .
      Yes, at first we tryed to use 144 as a bomber but it was a very bad idea... But, the engines of 160 are really based at engines of 144.
      And engines of 144 were based at engines of some 1950-1960 bomber that not flyed.
      PEACE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      actually the T-160 is based on the Tu-22. Of course any leason learned from Tu-144 was implemented onto the other planes, but they werent similar designs at all.
      Tu-144 was based on the prior Tu-135 project, inteded to compete with the american XB-70. But when missile technology made both planes irrelevant, the Tu-135 project was abandoned. The latest iteration of that project, was basically a Tu-144 without the passenger cabin.

      NASA knew better than you, that's why. "Safety" was not the issue, but performance was. Tu-144 was faster and heavier than the "Concorde", which ended up in flames.🤣

    When you see it from a quartering away angle at 0:37, it resembles a giant white catfish. And this was in no way superior to Concorde. No supercruise. Fundamentally wrong double delta wings. Poor low speed stability (lack of ogival delta vortices). Deafening noise. Poor range. Constant in flight systems failures. Terrible structural engineering. Ceiling panels that fell off. And all that money wasted just to fly once a week from Moscow at Almaty (wherever the hell that is).

    нет, на американцев пинять тут бесполезно. это понятно, что любая империя (начиная от римской) будет стремиться к мировому господству, и не важно, российская она или еще какая. если бы у наших конкурентов было что-то подобное и оно попало бы нам в руки, мы бы тоже все кабеля и проводку перерезали бы на хер. без возможности восстановления. вопрос тут вот в чем. когда умные люди решали вопрос о передаче этой машины американцам в аренду, неужели они не подозревали о том, что конкуренты смогут её окончательно испортить? Да конечно можно было бы составить такой договор, чтобы сохранить эту машину без пагубного вмешательства и т. д... и тут еще много чего можно написать, но смысла в этом нет...
    Короче, это памятник погибшему патриотизму, ибо не возможно защищать и воспевать то, что уже продали...
