As usual, most folks who leave negative comments have never spent any time on a Sypder. I have a Spyder and a motorbike so I've got the best of both worlds. I can honestly say that my RS is just as much fun as any motorbike I've ever had. In fact in most cases it's more fun simply because of its balance and wow factor. The quality of this machine is excellent and I'm happy I bought it. It doesn't matter what machine you drive, I think some bikers are just narrow minded. Harley Vs Japanese bikes etc just enjoy your ride and hit the road!
I have ridden cruisers, sportbikes....and now, I am getting a "new-to-me" 2009 Spyder GS. Might be older but still turns heads. Getting it tomorrow!!!!
We just got one of these for a bit of fun in winter, it doesn't replace a sports bike but when they're tucked up for the bad winter moths we hop on this and doesn't matter how much grit is on the road.
I rode two wheels for 37 years, five different motorcycles, before going to the Spyder. This is not "A bike with training wheels" as one idiot put it. It's a different riding experience, and definately a great solution for older riders or those with disabilities.
I agree it's greet for a wife that can't keep up to a experienced rider. or a old guy that has a real hard time with holding up his goldwing and ain't ready to retire from riding something. is it a bike. no not at all. it don't ride like a bike. it don't steer like a bike. it don't feel like a bike. it's the fee fee machine real bikers laugh at and ask why would anyone lower themselves to a thing like this. not a fan
Ernie Desjardins I have a Ducati monster 1200s and get sportbike riders that tell me my bike is garbage. I also just bought a sounder. It's a fun little machine but it is not the same as a two wheeler and much more fun then a car.
hey I own a 2008 can am spyder rss, & if BRM puts a hand break on the handle bars I would not buy it, I love the one break system its great! I have ridden two wheel bikes & hate the fact that the breaks are 70% in the front & 30% in rear, I have almost flipped two wheel bike because of that, I love my Spyder!
I have one and have ridden about 2,500 miles. I agree I would like to see a front brake. After 15 years on sport bikes, that is definitely one gripe. I love this thing, but it isn't a substitute for 2 wheel riding, but it's the next best thing.
I'm 17 and I want this. There's something about it that I like. I like that it brakes like a car, and I don't have to worry about it tipping over if someone pushes it. I'm not sure on what model or year I want. The Spyder caught my eye from the commercial, sorry but no 2 wheel motorcycle has dont that.
Finally glad to see that they put somebody experience on a spider to show that you can corner effectively stead of putting people don’t know how to ride it and then talking bad about it
I took mine to work the other day. I drive to 13 different locations and spend about 30 mins at each location. During my day i was stopped by 3 different people in the parking lots so they could ask me questions lol
The ride feels more like a high performance sports car than a motorcycle especially when you make turns,it's like being on rails. The can am rs is very stable. The element of danger is still there because you have 3 wheels instead of 4.
Point of gravity: to high! unlike the T-Rex (where you sit INSIDE the machine) you sit ON the spyder and can't maneuver from side to side like you would on a motocycle. Size : ur unprotected on a motorcycle like a spider but the motorcycle is has wide has your shoulders so its easier to insert in tight spaces in case of emergency like when there is no place to brake ...
I will have to correct myself; To drive the Spyder you need a car licence, or a B1 Licence (with a B1 licence you can drive three or four wheeled vehicles with an unladen weight no more than 550 kg).
Re the negative comments from those who haven't owned or riden these machines. I own a 2010 RSS, a 47 Indian Chief, a 06 BMW K1200S and a 2010 SYM 125 scooter. Each machine is fun to ride depending on your mood & all draw attentention where ever we go. If it wasn't for the Spyder's semi auto gear box and trike config, my wife would not ride. They get non traditional motorcyclists on the road which is a good thing.
In California, you don't need a motorcycle license to ride one! Just do a Google for Spyder Rentals in the Bay Area. I believe CA and DE are the only two states that allow this. Obviously, California has the best riding weather and scenery :)
What kind of licence do you need to run this in the US? In Sweden you can either have A (bike) or B (car) to runt this, everything on 3 or more wheels you can drive legally with a car licence.
Thanks for the response, I saw some of these are semi-automatic. Does that mean you could have one with a full bike license that you passed on an automatic bike?
So these are supposed to have automatic transmissions just like a car right? One problem I see that no one talks about is that these things are wide and would take up as much garage space as a car. You aren't going to just park it in a narrow space next to the car and against a wall. Plus you might even have to move the cars out of the driveway just to get it out to the street - if you only have a single car width driveway.
Love my 2012RSS!!!! So does every chic that pulls up next to me on it...plenty fast enough plus storage space....sleek and stylish...two bros dual exhaust and LEDs...u hate on that u jus plan stupid lol most negative comments from guys that never even been on one....I laugh at the hate lol
I've had mine for 3 years. if you've ridden a sled you'd feel right at home. Remember, there is NOTHING motorcycle about a Spyder except the twist throttle so get that outta your heads before you test ride one. I can tell you that the friends I have with motorcycles will NEVER go out to ride like I do with my Spyder in the spring because of the sand on the roads. They are dead meat on 2 wheels and they know it! I ride mine all year around here in VT. After all,"it's a sled for the street!"
Cool machine. Looks like mix of bike and snowmobile. I like both and this trike too. Now i wait for trike from Japan... Maybe Yamaha? They have in offert bikes and snowmobiles, maybe they should? Can am show us, people want vehicles like this!
I ride my 2 wheeler solo cause I can act like a fool on it w/o worrying my wife. However, she is always ready to ride on the can-am. This thing is still in its infancy, give it some time, I know some die hard bikers that are switching to them or just adding them to their entourage. Its just getting going, and it has found its niche. It should only grow. Dude is right though, every where we go, people always stop and look at it and question you about it, dont get that on my 2 wheeler at all.
Its the same for me, and people who have never ridden before, pickup on things like the frunk, the frontal protection, that no 2 wheeler offers, as well as the stability control system, when you explain it to them
The real negative is cost (especially now). The new, 2015, F3's with windshield package and backrests & such can run over $25,000... There is a bigger engine 1300+ cc's and claiming 115 HP. But the storage space got almost cut in half (in the nose cone); so if you wanted to travel a bit you'd probably have to go for the optional hard saddle bags (more dough)... I believe it is as many have already said: "...this is for those that can't shift, have balance issues, or other physical limitations". For the money I could have a Harley and a sport bike (and not take up any additional space in the garage...
Huh... this looks like a nice ride and it has two wheels in the front that means it won't fall left or right even i won't have to worry about falling off while riding it which means it looks safe. Yeah... i would love to give it a try.
can someone explain why these things cost as much as a used 5th Gen Camaro V8? i went on cycle trader looking for a used one 2010 to 2012 and they cost 15, 16k and up just as much as the same year model Camaros. Can-ams are cool but way over priced.
+Alec C I don't think so. I've been riding mx since 1980. I got on a spyder and this thing sucks. my honest opinion is I really hated it. my knees and hips hurt like crazy after fighting this thing. if you think it'll feel like a snowmobile. kinda ya but not as forgiving. the only way I'd buy one is if there's no other way for me to hold up a 2 Wheeler.
You dont need to fight it, just steer it naturally, dont countersteer like you obviously are, I own an RSS, its more forgiving, than any 2 wheeler in all weather conditions.
Why are you telling that this machine is unsafe ? And I don't think it is unreliable. I rode mine pretty hard and it has never broke down. Don't rely only on what you hear, the people who don't have any problem don't talk about it.
love the highs and lows of it lol... awesome video... my mom asked about it and seemed interested.. i do how ever wouldn't want her taking a turn too fast and her flip it.. cause i mean having to lean to prevent it has me going ape shit... she doesn't like the two wheels unless it's a scooter but never gotten one lol... i'm really thinking about getting her one or helping her get one...
Depends on the build but basics have 5 speed manual with reverse. Popular kits have 5 speed "manumatic" (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manumatic) while the "grumpy old men" models have 5 speed automatics (with reverse).
I own one. "Safer" may be not the right word to use if you want to talk about a low point. While "Safer" is a high point, in this case, "Tamer" might be considered a low for a two-wheeler enthusiast...
Let's just say that maybe you buy one of these because you want to continue enjoying motorcycling, but the person that is with you - the pillion - cannot physically get off a normal motorbike. This allows the rider to get off the bike, and then assist the pillion off in safety with the trike stable. There are many valid reasons for owning one of these, another is that with a decent set of pipes they sound fantastic.
$18K - You got to be kidding. I don't think it's worth more than about $5K or $6K. About the same as an ATV. Actually I was thinking of one for my wife who used to ride a motorcycle but is somewhat disabled and has problems with her knees and legs now. She would need more of a relaxed car-like seating - or at least seating like on a cruiser with forward leg positions. Also a nice big wide seat - and not a machine that requires body leaning to make a turn. Usage would be limited - just like a motorcycle up here in Northeastern Ohio.
I bought one of these and hated it from the moment I pulled out on the mighway. This POS is about as stable as the old 3 wheelere ATV. I only put less than 1,000 miles on it and sold it. Bought a Polaris SLingshot and was so glad I did.
I doubt you tipped this thing over. an old school 3 wheeler would tip over if the wind blew kinda hard. most people that ive heard says its not stable arent used to getting their butt off the seat to lean into curb.
Very, the brake system has 5 rear holders to congress the brake fast and safe, also taking corners fast will be scary, but taking the brake with your foot slammed down may cause a slight jump up of the back wheel, but all and all, great vehicle.
Really Ernie, yes its possible if you ride a long distance with the park brake on, and fry the brakes, and burn the brake master cylinder, as idiots who can!t read the dash have.
i think its the opposite! Advantages of a car, stable at all times, never have to worry about sliding on leaves in curbs on country roads, more than two wheels of stopping power, wider so its easier to been seen so I can worry less about getting hit, etc. without disadvantages of a two-wheel motorcycle. don't have to worry about being sideways in a curb when another car is coming, don't have to worry about a clutch, downshifting when coming to a stop, can reverse so short riders don't need help when riding, etc.
I would crash in the first corner. I'm used to turning the bars right to go left. I never realized how little power and performance these had. It would be a much cooler and more fun machine if it had a high revving 1200+cc inline 4. I'm giving thought of cannibalizing my Kawasaki ZRX1200R and using its parts to build a reverse trike or standard deltawing buggy for the streets.
As usual, most folks who leave negative comments have never spent any time on a Sypder. I have a Spyder and a motorbike so I've got the best of both worlds. I can honestly say that my RS is just as much fun as any motorbike I've ever had. In fact in most cases it's more fun simply because of its balance and wow factor. hope you like it. got my 2014 rss 990 se 2 days ago. getting used to it !
Getting it tomorrow too :) only two years later :) (how has it been untill now ?)
It would be pretty cool if you could do a follow-up of your spyder journey as they have evolved over these ten years.
Cool idea. Mark actually owned one for a while. Loved it.
We just got one of these for a bit of fun in winter, it doesn't replace a sports bike but when they're tucked up for the bad winter moths we hop on this and doesn't matter how much grit is on the road.

Motorcycles have 2 wheels not 3, have fun on your tricycle
Ernie Desjardins I have a Ducati monster 1200s and get sportbike riders that tell me my bike is garbage. I also just bought a sounder. It's a fun little machine but it is not the same as a two wheeler and much more fun then a car.
Pamela Anders Okay, I'll be the next idiot, nothing but a snow mobile with wheels and tires.
CAnam
Just a little late to the party as now is the time for me. Thank you for the review, very much appreciated, wishing you health & happiness !!
those have a reverse gear, sweet thing he didn't mention.
hey I own a 2008 can am spyder rss, & if BRM puts a hand break on the handle bars I would not buy it, I love the one break system its great! Its called a stoppie! and they are fun if you know how to do them right!
Learn how to ride!
me too. 2 days into owning a 2014 rss 900 se in yellow n black. now 70 and wife has dementia. feel safer giving her a ride
I have one and have ridden about 2,500 miles. I agree I would like to see a front brake. After 15 years on sport bikes, that is definitely one gripe. I love this thing, but it isn't a substitute for 2 wheel riding, but it's the next best thing.

I love this and can't wait to get one, just like he said its a more sophisticated ride
I used to hate the Can-Am Spyders but now it has grown on me and I want one. I can then buy a trailer and tow my motorbike to the race track :D
Love all the gay hater comments :D if you cant afford it, dont hate it :D
As a wheelchair guy, this is much more fun than a car or a...wheelchair!
Finally glad to see that they put somebody experience on a spider to show that you can corner effectively stead of putting people don’t know how to ride it and then talking bad about it
cant wait...12 weeks to go and this is mine
I took mine to work the other day. I drive to 13 different locations and spend about 30 mins at each location. During my day i was stopped by 3 different people in the parking lots so they could ask me questions lol
Of course they are. They are also really fun to ride !

Very nice review .many thanks .just got my Rs John in the UK
are they easier and safer to ride than a normal motorcycle
What year would you recommend for sport touring ??? Im looking to buy one real soon and I like all the years from 2011 up
If they offered it with a V-4 motor.... Like a vmax has I'd get excited for one. A v-twin motor is boring to me. Great video
I will have to correct myself; To drive the Spyder you need a car licence, or a B1 Licence (with a B1 licence you can drive three or four wheeled vehicles with an unladen weight no more than 550 kg).
Its a unique piece for sure wouldnt mind owning one but would like to see a more sleaker version with a stronger output.

Looks like a decent motorbike for me. I'm considering either the Mazda RX-8 or the Can-am Spyder
I LOVE motorcycles but this is not one. It is more dangerous than a motorcycle. Get the RX8 you will thank me on a rainy day.
In California, you don't need a motorcycle license to ride one! Just do a Google for Spyder Rentals in the Bay Area. I believe CA and DE are the only two states that allow this. Obviously, California has the best riding weather and scenery :)

Great review. Thank you ever so much. You are very talented reviewer
Yes what's the proper speed for switching gears on the can am?
Would like to see this fast a ride in the Spyder RT model.
So these are supposed to have automatic transmissions just like a car right? One problem I see that no one talks about is that these things are wide and would take up as much garage space as a car. Oh but Mark Snowden above "splits lanes just like a bike" on one....bahaha

Good video my man!!! Wanted one of these since I first saw the years ago. 18,000€ here.
Lol I like how it says right at the end "Highs; are chicks dig it more than a motorcycle!" Perhaps seniors?
Cool machine. Looks like mix of bike and snowmobile. I like both and this trike too. Now i wait for trike from Japan... Maybe Yamaha? They have in offert bikes and snowmobiles, maybe they should? Can am show us, people want vehicles like this!

Technically it is a trike with the two wheels in front.I do not even consider it a motorcycle.
+caleb roach , a trike is a motorcycle type, technically you haven"t got a clue what your talking about.
+mal62 tool
Keep trolling moron.
Huh... this looks like a nice ride and it has two wheels in the front that means it won't fall left or right even i won't have to worry about falling off while riding it which means it looks safe. Yeah... i would love to give it a try.
i have for just that reason. kept dropping a 1250 bm gs
can someone explain why these things cost as much as a used 5th Gen Camaro V8? i went on cycle trader looking for a used one 2010 to 2012 and they cost 15, 16k and up just as much as the same year model Camaros. Can-ams are cool but way over priced.
Got my 2012 Spyder RT Limited for $14,000. Got $2000 for my 2007 Yamaha Majesty 400 maxiscooter which brought the cost down to $12,000.
How do you test drive a generator?
Very good review
I want one cause it's safer. How many mpg do they get?
35
I liked it for the same reason when I saw the commercial.
i noticed that you were driving on decent condition roads. how well does this preform on older, bumpy, and cracked roads.
and are you more or less likely to die if you hit a pot hole on this or on a regular motorcycle.
+Alec C I don't think so. I've been riding mx since 1980. Anyone know where this was filmed. I live in Ontario and its all straight roads here and I hate it ahhhh
Review 2014 models please!
Are these manual
hello D.T. can i ride this amazing bike...
great Review, very complete thanks!
Ah right, thanks for the info mate really appreciate it!
Is this FWD or RWD?
love the highs and lows of it lol... awesome video... my mom asked about it and seemed interested.. i do how ever wouldn't want her taking a turn too fast and her flip it.. cause i mean having to lean to prevent it has me going ape shit... she doesn't like the two wheels unless it's a scooter but never gotten one lol... i'm really thinking about getting her one or helping her get one...
does it comes with speeds ? clutch ?
Depends on the build but basics have 5 speed manual with reverse.
Popular kits have 5 speed "manumatic" (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manumatic) while the "grumpy old men" models have 5 speed automatics (with reverse).
Love the sexy look, but why the crazy high price tag?
If he likes this, the 1340 cc F3-S will blow him away.
How is "safer than a motorcycle" a low?
I own one. "Safer" may be not the right word to use if you want to talk about a low point. While "Safer" is a high point, in this case, "Tamer" might be considered a low for a two-wheeler enthusiast...
thatsthejoke.jpeg
You can ride the Spyder with either a car or a motorcycle licence.
Not in Iowa - gotta have a 2-wheel or 3-wheel license.
No clutch??
I love it
can you drift whit this??
If they weren't so expensive I might consider one
I'll stick with my Tuono V4 Factory for now I think
It's a snowmobile with wheels.
Let's just say that maybe you buy one of these because you want to continue enjoying motorcycling, but the person that is with you - the pillion - cannot physically get off a normal motorbike. There are many valid reasons for owning one of these, another is that with a decent set of pipes they sound fantastic.
+Robert Sykes Well said.
my situation with pillion as you quote. uniquely safe vehicle ...
I would love to buy it but for 18 thousand dollars wow not a kid friendly price tag!
its as much as a base harley
$18K - You got to be kidding. I don't think it's worth more than about $5K or $6K. About the same as an ATV. Actually I was thinking of one for my wife who used to ride a motorcycle but is somewhat disabled and has problems with her knees and legs now. She would need more of a relaxed car-like seating - or at least seating like on a cruiser with forward leg positions. Also a nice big wide seat - and not a machine that requires body leaning to make a turn. Usage would be limited - just like a motorcycle up here in Northeastern Ohio.
If you have the money go for it it's a beautiful machine
***** You can get a base Harley for $8K
+thinkpol , and they are prehistoric shit.
My concern is the low mileage numbers of the Can-Am. My '02 Malibu gets better mileage than these.
this would only make sense to me if it was manual and put down around 200-250ish to the wheel.
I bought one of these and hated it from the moment I pulled out on the mighway. This POS is about as stable as the old 3 wheelere ATV. I only put less than 1,000 miles on it and sold it. Bought a Polaris SLingshot and was so glad I did.
I doubt you tipped this thing over. an old school 3 wheeler would tip over if the wind blew kinda hard. most people that ive heard says its not stable arent used to getting their butt off the seat to lean into curb.
mine averages around high 30's low 40's when im not doing any hard riding
Agreed!
can i wheelie this thing?
lol no, not possible
Maybe if you managed to fit a 1800+ cc engine in it and turbo it you might, or you might just flip it.
looool
Never mind wheelies Im a stoppie kind of guy! And one break pedal? I guess no stoppies either!
U should do sea soo review
The f3 models don't look as sporty as the rs models.
These might be fun if they had a serious motor in them and the back actually leaned.
How is being safer then a motorcycle a low?
Are they reliable?
Very, the brake system has 5 rear holders to congress the brake fast and safe, also taking corners fast will be scary, but taking the brake with your foot slammed down may cause a slight jump up of the back wheel, but all and all, great vehicle.
Thanks for getting back to me.
no they catch fire. Jody s caught fire 5 times so he got a victory lol
Really Ernie, yes its possible if you ride a long distance with the park brake on, and fry the brakes, and burn the brake master cylinder, as idiots who can!t read the dash have.
music???
It steers like a snowmobile, there's no front brake.... and its not near fast as a 600cc sport bike...
3 big reasons i'd never buy one
there is a brake on all three wheels....
Ya like i said there is no front brake, you can't brake just the front wheels...
Is not a Bike........ Il n'y a pas de comparaison a faire.......
Can anyone tell me the UK requirements to ride/own one of these?
car licence ir bike ...
if it would have 250-300hp and you it would be driftable, then it would vbe cool thing
Can you drift with this?
Only if you hack the BIOS (don't know how). But stock? No chance in hell...
dav00ddav00ddav00d Okay thanks man :D I thought you could do a wheelie or something then slide
Louie Season 3 Episode 8 sent me here.
15K for any bike is a lot I'd like to see this bike under 10K. .
safer than a motorcycle is a negative on this? 6:01
Looks likes a jetski on wheels, but its a cool looking bike nevertheless.
So a bike with training wheels
Malmia Lamlyo That's nonsense.
+Malmia Lamlyo , hey hombre you idiot yes.
Disadvantages of a motorcycle with out the benifits of a car
i think its the opposite!
I so wanna, but have zero function nor garage to keep it in.
