I love how much more expressive he's gotten over the years. He used to be relatively monotone throughout most of the video but now he puts a lot more character into his lines. It definitely helps make the videos a lot more interesting to watch.

Actually, it should be possible to get the race star in Sea Slide Galaxy. Speedrunners use a trick where they swim at the surface of the water and continuously shake the controller, which allows them to go much faster and maintain their air level while doing so. I haven't tested it out while crouching yet, but it should be possible nonetheless.
I still stick to my word after all these years that Bowser 2 in Galaxy is one of the best Bowser Boss Fights in Mario History. Making the two parallel each other with what moves they have is something that makes a lot of these fights unique, but the fact that they took away the spin move in the final fight is dirty and a disservice to Bowser.
Difficulty wise the 2nd fight is better and harder and i can understand why you prefer it, but overall i still prefer the final fight.

I feel like the rolling green galaxy definitely violates the spirit of the challenge. Mario is clearly standing and moving his legs while in an upright position.
Agreed. Maybe if you could be in the super-fast state the whole time, where Mario rolls on top of the ball.
I would consider it a power up that fundamentally changes your movement scheme- if the bee suit is allowed, the rolling ball with a star is allowed too.

Yeah, I stumbled upon it accidentally during an attempt and initially thought that the game might just take mercy on you and slow down the bunnies if you fail for long enough. Further experimentation though showed that it was the water.

@@CMeeCraftGamingOh and I've also accidentally found a bug that could've help you in the race against the penguins, basically when you're swimming on the water (and not IN the water, otherwise the bug won't work) and Luma spin in a certain position, you'll get incredible speed, but it's pretty hard to do.
To get in that specific position you have to jump out of the water with a Luma spin, then while in mid air hold your joystick downward to make Mario going up, so he won't go under the water after the jump, but on the water, and then you're capable to Luma spin without jumping out of the water (like you'll normally do in that position on the water) and gaining great speed while spinning, but still with you're joystick pointing downwards and spamming Luma spin.
Oh and you can't turn abruptly while in this position or it won't work, so it works only if you are going relatively straight.
I'm also saying that I've found it because I've never seen anyone doing it, even on UA-cam...

All these challenges do are make me feel inferior for struggling to play normally 💀😭 That cake level with those moving platforms that have holes took me SO LONG and still haunts me to this day. Good video though

Pro tips : If you spin at bowser you can cancel his fire attack.
If you spin near the surface of the water, you can get extremely far. This is the basic way to speedrun water parts, and probably shouldn't go against the spirit of the challenge.
This video was mad entertaining, I'm really happy with how hard you stuck to your ruleset. Some of the other challenge videos I've seen recently would massively bend their rules for convenience, and it just ends up feeling less genuine.
One of my favorite Nintendo games. Mario Galaxy and Mario Galaxy 2 somehow make boring underwater levels fun and are very unique compared to the normal Mario platformer.
I kinda expected that you'd have to do an even harder maneuver for Jr's boss fight, where you bounce off the shell, spin to pick it up, and throw it on the way back down.
Mario crouching looks so frickin funny, just awesome xD

You know, it's nice to see a challenge lately that isn't Catan easy or Triple Deluxe hard. This feels like a great middle ground.

Edit: Ok, nevermind, bunnies and Bowser crank it up several notches. That said, I know of a speedy combo that gets past Thwomps. It's called:
ZL + L + A = Long Jump. If you crouch before and after the leap, you fly forward without breaking the spirit of the challenge.

I feel like the ball levels break the spirit of the challenge as well... given Mario is RUNNING on a ball.
I think with the ball level, its being justified that the ball is a powerup.
Someone else, I believe it was Nico, also did this challenge but he allowed running around in various ways like having the shells. So I'm glad for your video because you kept to the spirit of the challenge.

Finally another challenge video. I've been yearning for one of these. Plus, since Mario Galaxy is my favourite game of all time, it gets bonus points. Also, as someone who has beaten a few levels while permanently crouching (In the 3D Allstars version), it is possible to long jump by hold back a tiny bit after the backflip, then holding forward all the way, and then you should have enough momentum to long jump.

At 23:46, you say that the fire attack cancels your crouch (and would presumably go against the spirit of the challenge), but at 35:33, you allowed taking fire damage to get past that part and a later part. Just pointing that out.

Today I have begun a challenge to beat this game with only* a GameCube Controller, which has no equivalent to ZL.
*Handheld Mode used when required, such as menus and mandatory Ground Pounds

It should really be a "without walking/running" challenge. I think it would be a bit more forgiving if you could stand with a shell, bomb, boo, etc. but not be able to walk with it. The not-walking rule would also mean that long jumps are out of the question.
Something I enjoyed greatly about this video that other videos seem to get wrong. I woke up to a music montage section, which other videos do, but this one has the audio balanced in a way that it wasn't a jarring shift from spoken voice to music and back to spoken. it was almost pleasant to wake up to it, still annoyed because existence, but a soft Mario music help enhance it

Since "Spirit of the Challenge" is so vaguely defined, I did notice a pattern to the violations which largely revolved around giving Mario standard ground movement. Really, any time Mario stands up and can walk.
Anything on the ball, twirling to get the shell on that one boss fight, and using the lava to avoid the thwimps came across as against the nature to me. From the look of it, though, only the ball is unsolvable.

I'm sure that whoever made the Koopa shells and how you capture them never had this challenge in mind. Basically, you're learning a new set of techniques to support your crouching lifestyle that Nintendo surely never intended.

fun fact! the bunnies do not do their job very well... i beat the game twice without knowing about long jumping as a 7 year old? maybe slighly older, don't exactly remember
Great vid, but I honestly think it's dumb that you consider powerups like the spring and ghost, and vehicles like the ball and stingray okay, but bombs and koopa shells (in boss fights) as "against the spirit of the challenge". I'd understand if you were simply picking up a shell in order to traverse the entire level easier, that would be no different than those tricks which allow you to walk around while holding the crouch button. That however is not what you would be doing. As long as you abide by the spirit of the challenge, you are only picking up that shell or bomb to transport it breifly to a location or hit an enemy. You could essentially think of shells and bombs as temporary one use powerups. Why are powerups like the boo mushroom, bee mushroom, stingray, etc. which completely eliminate crouching for entire spans of levels okay, but shells and bombs which do so for very brief incriments of time a breach of your honor? I don't have a problem either way, either eliminate all of them or use all of them, but I think you've ought to be consistent. I think your shell bounce throw was a very clever work around for bypassing this issue in the bowser Jr. fight, but this still doesn't change the fact that your rules are inconsistent. If that trick didn't exist, I think there shoudl be no issue with picking up the item normally! Still a great video regardless, and I thoroughly enjoyed your big brain moves throughout the journey! It's a year old video, so I don't know how you feel about this topic nowadays, but thought I'd share my opinion anyways. Thanks for the cool video, I'm totally giving it a like!
