Learn to live without aircon, bring clothes, iPad , phone from your own country. Walk more, eat and drink at home, try local food, live outside the big cities, clean your own house, avoid people who see you as atm
We use a small air conditioner when we sleep. With the house reaching 90 on most sunny days and humidity at 65+ it would be hard to live without. Also, I can't wait to move from Cebu!
Here’s a tip for all expats - open a Charles Schwab high yield checking account. Use the debit card to withdraw from the local ATMs. They exchange at the Visa spot rate minus 1%, which is a better rate than remittances offer. Plus they refund any ATM fees at the end of the month.
Only thing I would add... well is for guys like me. Your so right about not living smack dab in the center of a big city...to this end, I want to raise my own chickens and grow much of my own food. To this end, this will be exercise and also a way to save money and know exactly what is what. The only thing that truely worries me is the typhoons, as I plan to have solar power / generator backup. As we all know power there is an if at best. Basically being self sufficient is my #1 goal = save alot of money and relax and enjoy life!
I like that you put patience in there. I watched another youtuber building his house over there and he didn't have any. I could see it was costing him in so many ways, including money and quality of work.
All good advice. I've been visiting here on and off since 2007. Just retired here Aug 2021....big difference between visiting and living. All good advice.
Another tip: avoid unnecessary costs or services. This isn’t just the Philippines but anywhere really. It’s especially true for my fellow millennials. My brother and his wife and my exes are terrible at this. Can be small things that add up over time. Like Starbucks. Or going out to eat too much. Now sometimes is ok but all things in moderation. My ex made 2x as much as I did but I had all of the money. Bc I saved more and she wasted more. Now I’m not going to tell people how to use their money, but if you’re broke or in debt with a 60k+ job but you go to Starbucks too much and go out to eat too much or order door dash too much, you’re doing it wrong. Save and invest instead!
Dudes need to be smart with their dollars to get maximum value. This is the nitty gritty where you are helping guys save money and future headaches. Another good vlog brotherman.
As a foreigner I have burnt so much money, thinking the Philippines works like every where else. Guess what it doesn't. I tried to make it here twice before I retired and it just never made it. Now that I retired I have my pension coming every month. I'm okay. But even with that you still have to pay attention. No matter how well you plan shit happens, and you will always be on the losing end of it.. Don't get me wrong I live here and will always live here. It's my home, in general this guy is correct about all of it. Once you know the lay of the land how things run, after a couple years you can move.
You're so right, there are few places to turn to if you need help. You'd be wise to have an exit plan, too, if things ever come to that. It's very hard to save money here, living in a big city, I've found. Calvin makes some great points. Also I understand about wanting to get a decent gate ASAP. You feel naked without one!
Excellent video and advice Calvin. I have been here 12 years now, so when vendors quote me an inflated price, I simply laugh at them and go on to the next vendor. I have never paid a "Foreigner Price" since about a week after I moved here in 2009.
Precisely Calvin. Wasted so much on ATM withdrawal and lower exchange rates , besides d fee. And nowadays all banks have implemented d limit for each withdrawal so as to maximise their fee charges. B4 if u need 50k peso u can withdrew just once (HSBC) but not now . U might need at least 4 withdrawals of 3x 15000 pesos and 5000 just for d 50k peso hence extra charges .
Good video this one. I am planning to come to the Philippines 🇵🇭 to meet the lady of my dreams. Now I know that a fancy condo in the inner city will siphon money away fast, now I know that I can buy at a "spot cash" price in a local market where I can buy a quantity determined by myself, now I know that I will have to invest in a scooter for cheaper and value for money transport method. It is a valuable information you're sharing Bro Calvin. Thanks for the info. Stay well and stay safe
Your videos are great lessons and it seems in the PH it usually comes back around to going s l o w and taking time, many of the same rules apply to how you live, where you live, who you meet, business opportunties as well as going s l o w with the women you meet in the PH! Thanks for being a friend to us C!
Very good show Calvin! You hit on all of the good points to keep people from wasting money. I would like to add one thing when it comes to banking. In some areas you must have a Alien Certificate of Registration Card to open a saving account. You may have to wait 6 months before they let you open a checking account. Here in Metro Manila, most landlords want post dated checks for the rent. If you are planning on getting a place with a girl friend, one that you can trust! (TRUST) key word! You can have her to open an account that you keep the minimum amount to keep the account open plus rent each month. Just until you get every thing you need to do it for your self. I was not able to find a person that wanted to except a check from a foreign bank. FYI. Your area might not be that way. Also having a money belt is a good thing! Great show Calvin!
Great advice Calvin my grandfather always told me to live like nobody else so that someday you can live like nobody else. Which is what you are saying I believe; I don't want to put words in your mouth.
Thanks, Calvin. I am retiring in the Philippines with my wife in less than a year. After seeing so many videos online about retiring in this country, it was your video that touched on my biggest concern. Nice job in keeping it real. Subscribing and watching the rest of your content.
A suggestion for an addition to this "Going Broke Slowly" video or for a future video, which specifically covers the importance of a sizeable Emergency Fund carefully kept secretly. Containing the proper amount of money is kept very safe and can only be used for only specific purposes. In the US we are very fortunate to have so many helpful agencies. For example, hospitals in the USA don't ask us for money, before service.
Some men get their cushy medical serttlement of $360,,000 and blew it all in less than 10 years on vices in the Philippines and SE Asia. No discipline or self-control. It's shocking but not surprising.
Calvin, You have given so much real advice that it's actually priceless. I can't thank you enough. You're truly a consultant brother. Im definitely going to enjoy meeting. Stay Blessed and Safe
I believe your a man of dignity..talking about & sharing experiences about real concerns for all of us who live in Phil or intend to..Thank you Bro for your honesty & real subjects to help us & the locals..Respect! 🇦🇺
Truth. Even more so in Philippines. Homeless people, including some westerners on the street will keep reminding you to never forget, if you run out of money, no one gonna save you.
@Neil Stewart I haven't seen a homeless westerner. I've only read and heard about it. However, best believe I had a bullet proof plan to make sure it never happens. If I ever had to dip into my final emergency cash amount, then it would be time to book that flight and exit.
Great video! I do not get my blood rise by the Kano-tax. I made a decision to not argue for any "tax" costing me P50 or less. I send my wife to purchase everything of value. My biggest headache is remembering to get a receipt. In the Phils too many things break and need to be returned.
You have all scenarios covered Calvin, it makes really great logically and useful practice to make it in the Philippines. That is the information so many need for current plans and future plans in the Philippines, thanks for that wonderful advice Calvin.
you will find people in this country there is a lot of people with a lot of problems, you don't have a budget big enough to help everybody all of the time. But help where you can.
Thanks for talking about money and the way things work here. There are so many gotchas. It takes time to get into the grove. Cebu is relatively expensive, you're right. It is very crowded too, not for everyone. A smaller city seems better in many respects, but province life is not for most, I think.
Nice one Cali Cal. That 'patience' part is something I would need to practice big time. Thanx brother Calvin for all that you do bro. Happy Holidays to you and yours brother and keep up the marvelous work. Til next time. Peace...
I would have gone to Valencia for the added tranquility and mostly, the slightly cooler weather, yet still close to Dumaguete and its perks. I didn't even think it could also be cheaper.
Yes I did the same when I was there in 2008 2009 2006. 2005 and spent all my hard earned deployment money on her friends. Wedding jewelry. Wedding. Baptisms for all of mindinao. Hair cuts for all the lady's of Zamboanga. This and that etc etc. And I'm done with that game. That's another reason why I will not stay with one female and her family to drain me.
Investing in a solar generator, solar floodlights, solar flashlight,USB rechargeable arc lighter, affordable wind generator, rainfall water filtration system and A few electric griddle‘s(The type that you can put pots and pans on top of)(I think it’s called a convection stove top)instead of the propane Countertop stoves. Oh yeah I forgot, if there’s such thing as Satellite cable opposed to line cable over there.
Philippines ain't fool proof. That mentality of Philippines being cheap makes people enjoy spending more. It'll be too late to realize they're going broke. Spend wisely. Don't change your lifestyle even though it's cheap here.
the best sure way to "double-your $ "..........is to fold it over, and put it back in your pocket!!!!!! Get a BERKEY water filter .....it will make 100% drinking water for the stump water that comes out of the faucet!!! NONE OF IT IS POTABLE,even in a "nice" hotel
My plan is try to grow my own vegies. Its excersise and helps keep my mind active, Might try and have neighbors do the same. Start a thing where we each grow 1 type of vegetable and trade with each other. I also like alot of Filipino foods. Saves money instead of eating western foods alot
It does depend on location and lifestyle. We plan on spending more time in the phils in 4-5 years time. My wife is from QC and we have already built a fairly decent house there. I was discussing with my wife this topic, after I watched the video and asked her what she estimated our budget would be. She thought $2k would be on the low end. We sort of agreed $3k would be in the ballpark, to live comfortably and to do some travel within the phils. It is just more expensive to live in a big city. Still a lot cheaper than where we live now, which happens to be the most expensive place in the world to live!
Great advice! I’ve learned to accept the reopening delays, and work more and save more until then. Just going to make more money, invest in good dividends and sell covered calls for passive income.
Hej Calvin. Thank you for the work and time you invest into your videos. they are very informative , and I have to say I never had a faster feeling of a person being 100 percent honest and real as i got from watching your videos. Maybe you should consider having a "buy me a coffee " link , where people can make a small donation if they want. All the best to you and your family!
I have a chest type freezer which was stocked with food I bought at good prices. It saved money and time from going out shopping. The recent Typhoon Oddette left us without power for 10 day. i had to throw out an estimated P15,000 of spoiled food. I plan to get a generator next week. I don't know a thing about them.
Calvin, I have been here since May 01 2013. I have found that often if you are buying a bigger ticket item if you ask if there is a "Spot Cash" price. I have often found many local merchants will indeed shave off a hundred or 2 hundred pesos. Save mart, Robinson's and the established big chain stores wont do this but locals will. Love your channel. We live in Basey Samar which is just outside Tacloban City Leyte. I am from Seymour Indiana which is just 50 miles north of Louieville (Ha Ha_ Dizz
Look up Luneta near you. My Wife and I just bought some land there and plan to start building soon. I'm a truck driver and have been in and out of the Walmart Distribution center in Seymour a lot
SSS, few comments. Thanks for your thoughts. First, I am concerned about transferring cash to RP from my US credit union / bank. Still looking into ways doing that. Any advice here is really helpful. I just got my Schwab Debit card and a Remitly card. Need learn more. 2. My concern with getting a scooter is getting into an accident. Roads there are not exactly safe, and people drive like maniacs. If you're in an accident, youre instantly at fault. Also, injury while driving a scooter is quite real. 3. You mentioned getting a washer / dryer. This is surprising since getting clothes washed there I have found so very cheap. Just my opinion on going broke, slowly: Number one is inflation, especially in RP for foreign goods (assuming you do not want to live as a RP native). Prices increase in time, especially medical as you get older and need more medical care. Many things are fairly expensive in RP, especially in nicer stores, malls, as appliances, electronics, food. Of course, things there are cheap too, as rents, and if you get the local foods, clothes, other goods there, then you should be OK. The best way to go broke quickly in RP is 1. Purchase a new car. And yes, I have known Americans who purchase new cars there who cannot afford it. I have also met Americans there who just drink themselves silly. Have met Americans there who just eventually run out of money 'cause they not know how to create a budget and stick to a budget, period. The Number One way I have found Americans go broke there, quickly: To 1. Start your own business there. And if you do, heaven help you. 2. Always, always remember that the locals there (Philippines people) might take you for a few hundred pesos. However, it is other (Americans) foreigners that you must watch out for. Theyre just scammers, scumbags. dangerous. And while they might be great to have a beer with, eventually they'll take for for tens of thousands of dollars, or more. The fellow foreigners are your greatest threats ........ IMO.
Thanks for your comments and feedback. The Philippines has some very reputable banks and insure up to 500K pesos. I'm not familiar with Charles Schwab but have been told they refund ATM charges. Remitly charges a fee in the front end and the exchange rate on the back end. More money you send the more it will cost. I liked your ideas the roads are quite dangerous here whether you're driving or not. Buying a new car is going broke quickly 😃

"Get rich slowly" that's great advice Calvin, anywhere in the world. Those of who get rich quickly usually go broke quickly as well.
😅😅😅
Thanks for the tips Calvin. My tip is to get yourself a frugal and cost conscious Filipina, that will save you some really big money.

Yup plus if ur lifestyle learns this it's hard to quit.
So it's better to discpline yourself now and live without.

Great video! I do not get my blood rise by the Kano-tax. I made a decision to not argue for any "tax" costing me P50 or less. I send my wife to purchase everything of value. My biggest headache is remembering to get a receipt. In the Phils too many things break and need to be returned.
I’am sure Calvin can do a video about returning items back to the store. 😜😁
You have all scenarios covered Calvin, it makes really great logically and useful practice to make it in the Philippines. That is the information so many need for current plans and future plans in the Philippines, thanks for that wonderful advice Calvin.

Tellin the truth Calvin, another great video. Great advice to get qaulity over quantity.
Great video. To save the most on food. Learn to love Philippines cooking. American food is expensive there.
Nice one Cali Cal. That 'patience' part is something I would need to practice big time. it is a good idea to get a washing machine.....i know some people depend on the money they get to do other people's laundry though.
It's not like they come knocking on your door and I don't like my clothes hand washed so I help them in other ways. Thanks.
I don’t agree with saving but for others it’s probably a good idea if you don’t know how to invest
I would try to bank and/or invest with someone global, like Blackrock or Chase. It should be seamless with the states. I've never tried it though.
