for penny tile like this, I also recommend something like Ardex WA, which you use as both the thinset and the grout, so if the thinset oozes through the penny tile you dont have to clean it off.

PSA: Be careful with that Ultracolor Plus FA grout as it is an epoxy grout! You have to work it and wash it off fast otherwise it will set on your tile. If you are a beginner, use a standard grout like Mapei's Keracolor, which has a much longer working time and give you a lot of flexibility time-wise.

My tile guy used avalanche with a bright white tile in my shower yesterday and it turned out to be a very off white tan almond color. Pretty bummed about it and looking at color correction options now. It looks nothing like the color match to the glossy white tile you got. Glad it worked out for you

I kinda like the look with the grout covering the floor at 10:30 Do you think I could get away with just covering all the penny tile with that white grout, leave it at that, and tell my wife “Surprise! This is the latest in flooring… smooth white ceramic floor!!!”

  • @MoGumboFukUTubeForChngngMyName

How do you remove all of the excess grout (at 10:50)? Just wipe it with a sponge 4000 times? How long before grout is too dry to clean up? How wet should your sponge be? Thank you… I’ve watched 50 penny tile videos, your by far the best. I Subbed and Turned on notifications.

Can I ask how the white and white held up? I’m thinking of using penny tile as my kitchen backsplash, but I’m worried that the light-coloured grout will discolour over time. I’m also thinking of using the Mapei brand. Thanks!

Floors look great, been years since a tile floor always remember how hard it was on the knees and back.
Tip for those who want to try: when grouting work at a good pace and not too much at a time. Once it starts to set up it's hell to sponge off the excess. Have lots of buckets of clean water ready to go.

  • @mikemmikem2758

Very smart move not putting a so-called water barrier down. If there is a leak it will now be much easier to deal with. But, did you put a rubber member in the shower pan?

Nice work. you both must have knees of steel, no knee pads used on hard tile, wow.

  • @MoGumboFukUTubeForChngngMyName

You started at door and worked your way into a corner (same thing I want to do because I want my straightest line at the door), but then you stood on the freshly laid tile to do the back row. Did they move? Did that cause any problems?

What thinset did you use and did you mix it according to the instructions? I used premixed thinset and a 1/4" x 3/16" V groove trowel. My penny tile just sunk into the thinset and made a huge mess. I ended up pulling out the tile and hosing them off. Then I scraped the thinset off of the small area where I started. You are walking, kneeling and patting your time down to set it and level it. Also, I put down a solid border tile and penny tile in the middle. The penny tile was thinner than the border. Now I'm looking for the "sheathing membrane" to put down first and make up the difference.
    What a huge mess!

    • @bojangles_bonjangles8000
      @bojangles_bonjangles8000 2 роки тому

@@MrPostFrame It's been down since May of 2020. No issues. They say it's self sealing, but the tile shop I bought all my supply's at recommended to still seal it. Once it was down, I did a quick water perk test. Seemed like the grout was still absorbing water and I thought, if it will absorb water, it will absorb dirt! I have a similar situation as you, but instead of penny tile, it's natural round stone. Alot of grout! I used Miracle sealants and used a spray bottle. Mist it over the entire surface pretty close to the floor, where it was saturated, but not wet. Let it soak up then just wiped away with a clean sponge. Did that twice. Let it cure then put some water back down and it beaded right up. I only sealed it, not for water intrusion, but to give me confidence that it will be much easier to clean when need be and that when I need to, it will actually look new again. Was very quick and easy to seal and worth the $30 for the quart of sealer, IMO. Your house is coming along nicely!

In both the white and black floors, you stress that the thinset cannot be too thick, but not too thin for adhesion. What was the size/shape of your thinset trowel notches? One-sixteenth, one-eighth, three sixteenths...square or triangular ("pointy") teeth?

I’m kind of with Paul’s choice. First, let’s accept that h2o is always the enemy. But a lot of things we do are to save us from the problem that happens 3% of the time. and those 3% are usually things that only goofs do like letting the tub overflow or not calling dad when the toilet clogs. When you build for someone else, you have to assume the worst. When you build for yourself, this is a reasonable tradeoff if you are as capable as these folks.
