  • Head over to your local wetlands or grassland and just listen. [SQUEEEECH!] Wait... what was that... a rusty farm gate opening? No, no farm gates to be seen. That was the melodious and sweet, sweet song (sarcasm!) of the yellow-headed blackbird. Sit back, relax, and have a good chuckle, as the "song" of these birds will leave you captivated and wondering how such a harsh sound could come out of such a beautiful bird.

The way he moves his head when he vocalizes 😂 It looks like he's clearing his throat!

I have seen these birds at my local wetlands. To me, their song sounded like someone strangling a vacuum cleaner 😂. I noticed how the Yellowheads dominated one area of the wetlands, while the redwings dominated the rest of it. Definitely an interesting bird to see and hear.

If the yellow headed blackbirds can shove around a red winged blackbird, they are indeed in the ambush mode. Red winged blackbirds attack - and drive away osprey!

Oh I'm in awe what a bizarre song for such a nice bird 😮. And so funny the little yellow spot on the males 😅. Really, birds are astonishing. We ONLY have the European Blackbird here with so melodious songs.

It sounds similar to a red winged blackbird.
Birds, in general, are easier to find and watch than most other animals. They call our attention with both visible AND audible display. Others, say, foxes, muskrat, wolves, mink, etc are less observed.
And, birds seldom attack with fang and claw. So far, I have never been attacked by a bird. I have come dangerously close to serious problems with vultures while on motorcycle, and another time, on taking off with a plane. Vultures are dumb, AND they don’t give a darn. But not much can be expected from something that eats rotten meat on purpose. sigh

Uncommon in eastern Oklahoma. Observed occasionally by the sod farm birders, lol.
