Agreed! Good song works in almost every genre and there's always a possibility for a new edge. Like "Always on my mind" - it was great to begin with and PSB made their own kind of great. Or "Toxic" - practically any "Toxic" cover is at least interesting.

This is a good example of how great music can be a chameleon, morphed into a non genre specific transformative reinvention with grace. A great song indeed, Il take the country version tonight, its what it always should have been...a song about love and appreciation.

Just discovered this guy a few hours ago, and haven't stopped listening since. A little Waylon. A little Bocephus. Some Keith Whitley. I legit hear so many different artists coming through this guy. Then he goes from outlaw country to Nirvana and completely makes it his own without disrespecting it. I really just can't say enough. Pure talent. I am blown away.

+Mac Lethal Its because Nirvana is like this untouchable entity that people think should never be covered and they just blindly dislike covers because of their god like worship of Kurt Cobain. Even when the cover is fantastic like this, they will dislike it. Also especially because it is country which many people in music tend look down upon as a genre and rightly so in some cases, but they should not here because Sturgill Simpson is one of the rare great country artists of today and his new album is a great breath of fresh air in such a debased genre that is country music.

I love how Sturgill adds that line after "don't know what it means" where he sings "to love someone". It completely changes the meaning of the song. Nirvana's version of this song was about the alienation they felt by the crowds of people at their shows who sang along with the words but didn't know what they meant. Sturgill's version is about how the song made him feel when he was a teenager. Ironic that he falls right into Cobain's trap, and yet reimagines the song as something beautiful in a whole different way.

Sturgill wrote this album for his son after discovering a letter his grandfather wrote to his wife and infant child while he was in Japan during WW2. His grandfather did not think he was going to live, so the letter was a farewell/advice to his child. It moved Strugill so much that he wanted this album to be a letter to his own son. For this song, I believe Sturgill wanted to teach his son about the temptations and behavior exhibited by adolescents. He wants his son to treat women with love and respect. And if you can do that, it can be a beautiful and happy thing, Which is why I think the horns were added. They represent happiness. The music video get's much more cheerful when the horns come in, as well.
And for the record, I love this version of the song.

  • @JeremyHurtt

    Two things...
If you're bitching about the lyric changes, just stop. Kurt made a song about teenage angst and conformity, and Sturgill morphed it into a song about finding yourself through finding connection (the fact he did that with a small handful of words is a testament to his ability and insight). Had Kurt lived to be a 50-year-old man, I have zero doubt that this version would speak to him more today than does the original. It's an evolution of the song, not an attempt to copy it.
And on that note, if you're complaining that he "stole" the song, or "did it wrong", just stop. As a huge Nirvana fan from the jump, let me just point out that Kurt's "genius" was mostly writing and playing 50's pop songs using punk concepts. EVERYBODY BORROWS EVERYTHING. There is no true 'originality' in music, though acts like Nirvana and Sturgill Simpson come about as close as anything we get these days.

@@clintoncagle1545 hey "clint". The fox news dig was mostly due to my opinion of a news station that spreads fear and lies to the "gullible" people of this country and because i had about 7 IPA's on my deck at the time shortly after watching Sean Hannity spew off some b.s about our "current situation" in a youtube wormhole. Also, i have never used the term "well said" when relating to fox news. I was implying he has depth, meaning, truth, and thought in his comment, unlike fox news...i dont call the PC police you nerd. "Friends dont let friends get haircuts". Sturgil is the man.

That was indeed an ugly election. It's amazing to see how that friendship developed, then fell apart during Adams' administration and subsequent re-election campaign, only to be rekindled later in their lives. He sadly passed away a few months ago and I haven’t been able to listen to this song without tearing up, especially the very last 10 seconds of it. Every time I get to the last 10 seconds, i always imagine him ascending with little wings and a halo and flying upwards into a sunset.
Anyway, I don’t think there could have been a better way to cover this song. Sturgill did a very phenomenal job and this song will always be something bigger than I thought it would ever be.

As an English professor -one long accustomed to spotting the 'hidden meanings' in art- this video just about breaks my heart with its empathy and sweet reassurance. It's all about Kurt. It's so, so about Kurt: the Kurt who alchemized dissatisfaction and wanted love...the Kurt who made it home. Honestly I can't watch this video without getting a little teary-eyed. Sturgill makes all this possible, people. You can't help but feel the stark legitimacy of his music: how plugged-in to himself, his subject matter, and the art of music-making he is. We don't see his kind too often, so take note.

I was always told, as a child, that if I didn't have anything nice to say, I shouldn't say anything at all. I reckon this is the type of situation they were talking about. So I'll just say this, I happened to like Mr. Harmon sharing his thoughts and insight. I'd love to pick apart your charade here, but then I wouldn't be saying anything nice. I will admit though, sometimes it's fun to be a troll. Nice troll is way funnier than asshole troll though. Try it, you might like it.
