Scofield is totally unique. He can play bluesy and funky but he also can play, with total authority and authenticity, the most advanced bop. He really knows harmony inside-out and he has that elastic phrasing that guys like Charlie Parker had but you don't hear in guitarists who come out of fusion. He's a great composer, too.
Right on! I really appreciate John Scofield. Such a vast library. I will admit, about 35% of his work I could take it or leave it and maybe 5-10 % I do not like at all. But damn, considering the amount of material this guy has put out and continues to put out, it amazes me how much wonderful and unique material one artist can manufacture on a consistent basis for so many years. His playing puts you somewhere that no one else has the ability put you in, which is my standard for what I consider “truly unique”. Not to mention that fkn tone. That chorus/fuzz tone that he uses at the end of this jam and randomly throughout other numbers of his (not exactly sure what effects he’s using) is so thick and soulful, even at a quiet volume. As time goes on, I appreciate Scofield more and more.
@@82camino96 When Scofield solos he does what the other jazz masters did in the past, which is tell a story - you hear him in the process of discovery. Most modern fusion players tend to play chops and they're impressive but for me what they play lacks the depth of master horn players like Joe Henderson or Sonny Rollins who really took you on a journey.
You too can shred like Sco if you wear socks with your sandals! A Go Go was one of the first CDs I ever got, haven't stopped listening to it since. And this version of Chicken Dog is pretty special!
love the keychange at 2:04 and 2:14 -2:20 is just killer.scofield epitimizes playing from the soul(in my opinion)he talks with his guitar...these guys are some of my favorite players
Can't think of a band in funked-up jazz I like better than MMW. I've been hooked since "Combustication". Add Scofield, and it's like having a birthday cake when it's not your birthday ;)
Saw them last year in Memphis sitting in a puddle of mud...literally! It was a great experience for me and definitely one of the best performances I saw there other then Snoop Dogg (haha)... :)
Nice. Great grooves. I always loved how they seem so attached to their music when they play. Entertaining to watch and to hear. I wonder what Scofield gets so pissed about at the very end. Literally, the last 3 seconds, he looks down and...something is messed up.
@BaytekkDesigns This is amazing to no end.......noone in the audience is moving hahah.....i would like to see them at a hippy fest......people would be dancing then
I'm only a third of the way through, and I think the crowd must be duct-taped down into their seats. Is this uh, restraint? How can you listen and not move? Very nice, and thanks for posting it.
this song is really minimalistic, but i get the notion that these guys are really enjoying playing this song. they are all moving around a lot on stage, kinda doing the 'chair dance' thing. seeing medeski singing to his notes really makes me laugh
I wouldn't consider that a mistake...it fits very well as a passing note (A Bb C: all of them in D Aeolian), though anyone can have their opinion. Personally, I really liked note A there...
Well, I think his tone is cool - but it's that chorus effect he puts on his guitar, if he used a more clean sound his tone would be better. I think he kicks major ass and this is my favorite song by him.

Love Sco's approving nod at 6:51...amazing chemistry these guys have..
I love Martin`s groove .
It was just sooo right for Scofield to hook up with these guys.
Lately I started listening to jazz. And the reason was these four guys!
One of Sco's finest work! I'm addicted!

so much feeling, this is soo awesome, those are my favorite jazz musicians of actuality
great stuff love all of these guys especially the drummer, funky...
Absolutely great. My favorite live recording of S,M,M & W.
Scofield brings a whole new dimension to their music, so good!
1997 was a good year in so many ways..!
:)
tss. medeski, scofield, martin & wood.... such a great band!
oh the sympathetic resonance with the bass and snare!!!!!
its hard to find this comfort level in anyone else. great vid
One of my favorite songs of ALL TIME!!! MMW + S Rule!
i love sooo much medeski
Wow! Epic performance,….like an old friend with some new tricks,….
Medeski. Saw Scofield live last year, I love that man. And i love this band. Nice vid :)
my hair could be on fire and i'd just be chillin out to this
They are playin Bonnaroo this year!!!
I saw Sco about 30 times in the late 80s/early 90s, but 1:33 is how I'll always remember him.
they were overwhelmed by the groove. The inputs of untrained minds would overload.
Nice sound quality!
feeling... wow
I totally agree with you.
bacccccccckk in the daaaaaayysss
Oh they felt that one!
Saw them last year in Memphis sitting in a puddle of mud...literally! It was a great experience for me and definitely one of the best performances I saw there other then Snoop Dogg (haha)... :)
awesome chops!!!!!!!
The way this starts out, makes me think there should be a "Think-Chicken Dog" recording somewhere
Nobody could have put it better. That's exactly what I think about this Master Guitarist. Also, MMW make a great team to play with him.
*Scofield, Medeski, Martin & Wood - Chicken Dog*
Toute la complicité des musiciens à l'oeuvre, avec un public médusé.
Nice. Great grooves. I always loved how they seem so attached to their music when they play. Entertaining to watch and to hear. I wonder what Scofield gets so pissed about at the very end. Literally, the last 3 seconds, he looks down and...something is messed up.
crazy nice ! です.
i accidentally voted your comment down, but i completely agree. Sco's badass phrasing complements their funky style PERFECTLY!
unstoppable.
@luvz2drum99 I had the opportunity of a lifetime to see them in AnnArbor, MI. They are awesome.
Unos maestrosss
yeah i sure do love :)
@urlhammer they are singing their solos outloud as they play them. It is a technique that some people find to help them while improvising.
wood my mannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
WOW Medeski looks so young in this video
awesome CHOPS!!!
Wow. Great subtle/minimalist guitar playing there. I had almost forgot how good MMW is.
from DVD of from special TV.
Yup, you know that's got to be it. Overload.
I always love M,M, & W, but I also thought they needed another solo instrument. Sco is perfect.
even the plant can't help but groove.
@urlhammer
because improvising with musicians is just like having a verbal a conversation. it helps them with phrasing.
I always think of that song when I'm walking my dog
This musically is when someone back in history had the idea of mixing peanut butter with jelly between bread!
exelent!!!
@BaytekkDesigns This is amazing to no end.......noone in the audience is moving hahah.....i would like to see them at a hippy fest......people would be dancing then
Is it just me or does Sco look frustrated in the last couple of seconds? These guys are so siiiiiiiiiiiiiick!
Just about as good as it gets...Sco and MMW in their prime...
I'm only a third of the way through, and I think the crowd must be duct-taped down into their seats. Is this uh, restraint? How can you listen and not move?
Very nice, and thanks for posting it.
scofield adds new life to mmw
@RightM0nster let me rephrase...insurmountable.
hahaha, cuz they're all enthralled. that's some good shit goin' on there!
socks and sandals - good work sco
Man, are they cookin.
you bet!
2:10 ouch
did not recognize Medeski at all dang the 90s were somethin else
wait, hold on a second, let me take off these glasses... ahh yes, there we go.
That's great! Thanks!
Where can i get the full video of this concert?
Now just throw my last name into the mix
Scofield, Medeski, Martin, Sharron and Wood :D
I dont know what to do when that happens. I ussually move around a lot in dancing motions

Well, I think his tone is cool - but it's that chorus effect he puts on his guitar, if he used a more clean sound his tone would be better. I think he kicks major ass and this is my favorite song by him.
Sco looks very much like Steve Jobs on this video :D
ya all lookin too deep...ya can smell it...funk...pure funk..p&l
It's so good that it forces the video out of sync.
@BaytekkDesigns You mean lady googoo listeners?
quote older coment by some user: "Sco has no business wear socks with those sandals"
Where are you from?
A Hunter S.Thompson look alike at 9:31
