Walking Around at The San Jacinto Mall - Summer 1991

- A clip of my sister and I playing games at Power Play, then walking and clowning around in the mall. PLEASE forgive the camera shake, It was my first time using a full sized VHS Camcorder! Haha! The San Jacinto Mall was still awesome at this time! Good Times!
I nearly cried while watching this. You can't even stand in the Wards wing anymore. Thanks for letting me have some memories through your memories.
Ugh... you have to love an old mall... the tiles, the fountains, the plants, the weird decorations they hang from the ceilings... so dreamy 💕✨ we will never experience mall life the way we used to...
Weird decorations ? Go nowadays and everything is weird, including the people.
Don't forget the Pastal'd colored plant pots! :P Going to the mall in 1990 was the best!
We didn't even realize that this was as good as it was going to get. Until the late 90's creeped up, and then the awful 2000's and on wards.
The san Jack mall is gone now, just a breaking apart parking lot around some oddly shaped grass field lots around a crumbling central ruin and 2 dying anchor stores. Your videos are the most content I've found anywhere capturing the interior of the mall at its height. The mall was my childhood and it's very sad to not only have lost that, but basically any substantial public area to go to and feel comfortable in.
I had no idea. I remember visiting that mall when I was very little with my brother. That is so sad. :-(
Arcades, malls with way too many water features and plants...Exactly how I remember the mall in the 90's. I remember falling in a fountain at the mall once trying to steal coins from the bottom and not doing the science lesson in school yet that teaches you how water distorts light so the bottom seems closer than it is lol.
I wanted to cry 10 seconds in...that was one of my favorite arcade games as a kid. Thank you for sharing this video and helping remember memories I forgot I had.
The amount of neon was incredible love that colourful glowing atmosphere
That was the 90's brother.
I miss it. I was an 80s kid and a 90s tennager
The golden age
+adidas1984x And, It will never happen again, I'm very happy that I recorded this, Never new this would be a treasured memory!!
Yep! I'd say it lasted until maybe mid 1993
Huh 93? No way... The mall scene was prime throughout the 90s due to the rise in many things. Movies alone made the place seem full from 5-11 pm. Mid 80s-early 2000s were a prime time to buy electronical devices. The 90s were filled with useless crap to buy if you were living a middle class style. I'd say sometime in the early 2000s, the mall scene was on it's death bed. The magical was certainly not there but on the weekends, most malls were filled up imo still. It wasn't until post 2009 where it's basically just a empty building. It's not over yet tho lol.
I miss the 90s. Great time to be a teenager
@@midnightmoon3230 a lot of hangouts that my friend group and i have are actually very reminiscent of how it was in the 90s. We all went to the mall and walked around for 7 hours just 2 days ago.
..summer 1991 .. T2: judgement day !
Miss these days! I dont think anything could ever beat the 90s
Watching this I can’t help but wonder how these people are doing and where they are now
I have similar thoughts when I watch dated videos
Life before 9/11/2001 was perfect.... PERFECT
To say I feel nostalgic would be an understatement. It is more of feeling homesick of not of "where" but of "when"
FACTSSS
Thats exactly how I feel
Wow, brilliantly put
Before diversity took its toll
I was 11 when this video was recorded. I miss my youth. I'm now a grizzled 40 year old.
I was 4, I also am now horribly grizzled and have given up on life since the baby boomers ruined any chance of a life equal to their own for us.
I was born 11 years later, in 2002. Now, I’m a young 18 year old.
I did not take one breath in the 20th century.
Was about 5 at this time and some reason I still remember playing that same game during that time as well I remember playing Gameboy in 1989 at Wal-Mart before my deform thumb accident.
Don't ask how I remember my childhood so well from 30 years ago like that and yet most of my family can barely remember what they yesterday which will be a mystery to this day?😑
@@TheHolyMongolEmpire you're just using Boomers as an excuse... Your generation just wants the government to take care of them
God the 90s were so cool. So many cool stores before big corporate took over the world in the 2000s. What a shame. Glory days
Even the commercials were amazing back in the very late 80's and early to mid 90's. They were cozy, comforting, larger than life, creative, wild, colourful and super imaginative. These days, commercials have become nothing but soul sucking corporate sterile lifeless lazy garbage.
Having lived in Houston for 6 months during 1973 made it my favorite city and home away from home. My family and I would visit two or three times a year and once San Jacinto Mall opened it was a much anticipated stop to and from Louisiana. I truly loved going there and it became my favorite mall. From the food court’s beautiful sails, large anchor stores and variety of others added to its life and beauty. I will always have fond memories of San Jacinto Mall and grateful for the joy it provided.
Thanks for posting this. I remember walking around this mall with my brother in 1980 when I was 5. I am now 45. Gosh, I miss those days.
Thank you for giving me the back story about this mall. I do remember how I loved the food court area. It seemed to me that there were a lot of plants throughout the mall. For some reason I was thinking about Greenspoint Mall instead of San Jacinto when I left a previous comment to you and deleted it because I realized I was mixed up. My mom and I used to shop mostly at that one all the time. I went over to see it a couple of months ago and there was a security guard that I talked to inside who told me where the jungle gym I used to play on was. I just about cried because it is totally boarded up and only a few stores are left. There was a Scooby Doo Pizza across the street where we used to go and that shopping center is in a sad state, too. I guess I'm too sentimental. Everything changes but we still have the memories at those places. I don't know that I've ever been to Baybrook Mall. That's encouraging, though. Yes. I think Amazon has singlehandedly shut down a lot of brick and mortar stores although I love the convenience of it. The pandemic, too. Maybe sometime I'll go to Baybrook. I mostly shop at Deerbrook and occasionally at The Woodlands Mall which is very nice.
@@kevinrichards3288Not sure if I remember those but I remember having a baked potato with melted cheese and broccoli on top. lol I also remember the slanted windows when I looked up at the ceiling where it always looked cloudy outside because they were tinted. lol
@@kevinrichards3288 Oh, interesting. I think I may have remembered those animals elsewhere but I think I only was out in the main part of the mall. If you don't mind me asking, when did you grow up? (70s, 80s, 90s) What you are talking about reminds me of Slinkies which were popular in the early 80s. I got one for Christmas one year. I remember a store called Wackers near where I lived when I was growing up that had stuffed animals hanging from the ceiling. lol
@@kevinrichards3288 Oh, I see. :-)
@@kevinrichards3288 Oh. I didn't know that. I remember staying at the Hotel Galvez with my parents when it was brand new. I know where that is.
My stepdad, Shannon Aguilar says he knows y'all both and was shocked to hear that your sister passed away. He graduated from Sterling in '89 I believe.
1991 still felt very 80s and look which a good thing.
The tail end of the 80's creeped into 90 & 91. It wasn't until 92(which was still an awesome year) when things started to change. 96 was when pop culture, imo, went to crap.
I really would liked to seen more...I worked there...from China Belle, to Burger Barn, to Piercing Pagoda, to Lane Bryant in early to mid 1980's...Had my first alcoholic drink at the Chelsea Club as well and watch countless movies...
A plethora of memories...💕💕💕💕
My local mall hasn't probably gotten a interior facelift since the 1980s. Oddly, people say it's dying. Occupancy isn't like 30%, it's 90% I think.
It's wild that at a certain point, security started getting on people for taking pictures/videos in the mall.
They don't want you to have any kind of fun/freedom anymore.
I think 9-11 caused that whole thing
Damn I remember that Simpsons game at the arcade, that was seriously my favorite game to play when I went to the mall as a kid. I used to get coins from the fountains to play at the arcade lol too bad kids today will never know how amazing this mall used to be. it was still pretty good in the early 2000s but really the 90s and 80s is when the mall was at hightest point
POPINCONEJO88 it sucks I never got to see this mall it seemed so unreal and magical
@@sethwoodward5515 I remember my mom took me to that mall back in the day when it first opened back in 1981 & I was little at the time & it was the place. I've had great memories of that mall & now today only 2 stores there remain, JCPenney & Macy's, & the whole rest of the mall is all closed off.

@@sethwoodward5515 those were the days😎👍
I recorded a video of myself walking around the mall with the little memories I had of it before they started to tear it down.
I grew up in the NASA area most of my life, but over the past 7 years or so I visited this side of town and this mall often. Met a girl I dated from there, too. Funny enough, now I live right across from where the mall used to be, and is now going away, one little store at a time. Heck, this is where I saw Avengers: Endgame and I always had a blast at the theater arcade and the other arcade nearby. Once those started closing, I knew it wasn't going to be long before the rest of it was gone.
I was just over there yesterday. So creepy with only the Macy’s and JC Penney section still standing. Even though they’re open they look abandoned too. I was going to go to the Penney’s a couple of weeks ago but the grass was so overgrown and the parking lot was quiet and eerie that I decided not to even get out of the car.
i cant quite put my finger on why but guys were more masculine back then, i was a young teen in the 80s and i can certainly tell something has changed, yet im still not 100% sure what
I was looking though videos of now-defunct Houston-area malls, hoping for at least some walkthroughs before they were demolished, so this home video of the mall during its heyday was a pleasant surprise! Thank you so much for sharing this memory
I hate Gen z and I’m apart of it😣😞 I wish I lived through these times instead
Ha!! I used to play that Simpsons game with my brother, bought several games at Babbage's and always got samples nuggets at the chick-fil-a. I miss old San Jac mall
Yes I remember the Chick-Fil-A they had there, brings back great memories. I remember my mom took me to that mall back in the day when it first opened & I was real little at the time & it was the place. Nowadays the only stores that are still there are Macy's & JCPenney but the whole rest of the mall is all closed off.
4:06 1992 Crown Victoria. Solid car. Panther platform. Will run forever and can take a lot of punishment. Predecessor was the LTD Crown Victoria.
Had my 6th birthday at Power Play in 1991. That’s exactly how I remember it.
Hell yeah, remember that circle ride up against the wall? Sit and it take up. And round. Party area was like a platform stage. Perfect.
The 80s & 90s were the days😎👍
Great video, thank you for sharing 😃 I've been to this mall... as a kid in 94-96... I think the last time I was there was early 2007... I remember the food court and the theater. Nice to see it again in its heyday.
These American malls back in the 80's and 90's had the beautiful atrium and trees inside. Now it's all white marble and rather bland.
I was 17 days away from celebrating my 10th birthday when this video was filmed. I remember when the sodas came in glass bottles, and the old malls. Today in 2023 I am 42. I still have hope that life will get better, but it seems as though the world 🌎 is getting worst as Each year passes. It’s really sad.😢
It is really sad, because I was there opening day. I definitely know that this mall was the best thing to ever happen for Baytown, and we were very fortunate to grow up with this magical place. I doubt Baytown will ever have anything this nice ever again, at least in our lifetimes..😢
Best summer of my life! Just graduated HS and life was fabulous!
Same here, my whole life was in front of me
Walking up to a Simpsons arcade cab in the early 90s with no one around it was a rare sight indeed.
Oh god, its so all so horrible and cheesy, I love it.
Just like West Oaks Mall in Baytown.
Those arcade sounds are beautiful and is where my inner-child resides.
Here in 2019 when they tore it down😭
They only tore down the parts where Montgomery Ward & Sears use to be. Besides JCPenney & Macy's the whole rest of the mall is all closed off.
@@kevinrichards3288 yep. January 2020 is when they closed the mall down due to construction. But you can still go to JC Penny and Macy's.
@@razvandobos9759 yes & I visited those 2 stores there recently to get some new bath towels & wash cloths. To go from one store to the other you'd have to go outside & either drive or walk around because the indoor entrances that lead out to the rest of the mall are all closed off.
yo adults : ) i'm 18 and young today and i'm curious to know; were the 70s, 80s and 90s really a greater time? particularly for teenagers and young people? cause I hear and feel like today's a shitty time with the internet and social media and all that compared to before. what do you think?
Well, as in everything...that is subject to opinions!
Here's Mine: I was a kid in the '70s & '80s and young at heart thereafter!
I really feel bad for today's kids. You can't do anything, Parents think you'll be shot dead or kidnapped every time you go outside. They don't play on their own and are constantly hovered over, even to older ages! Our parents, especially during the summer would tell us to go outside and play and lock the door after we left! We just had to be back home for dinner or when the street lights came on! Spent all day at the pool, riding bikes as far as we could, and found so much to do without money....because we never had any!
The mall and the arcade were very special places because they were NEW! The mall was a fantastic, futuristic wonder world because there was nothing like it before! The same with the arcade! It was incredible!
Cable TV, The VCR, Atari, Awesome Music/Bands/ Music Videos, and Video Rentals all started around this time too! It's kind of like what was portrayed in Ready Player One, most of the very iconic things came out in our childhoods. I could go on and on!
The '90s to me were an awesome continuation of these things as well! Sega, Super Nintendo, N64 and all their Iconic games. Nickelodeon was in their golden years, and SNICK was awesome! The Internet at this time felt like an exclusive club when you were on America Online!
After the 2010's began, so many things took their toll, Online shopping, Streaming, Online games.
Malls are dropping like flies, only the ones in affluent areas survive. You have go to special conventions to play actual arcade games now. (places like Dave and Busters are not the same)
My real advice, Do what you enjoy! Whatever it is! Don't let "friends" or peer pressure stop you from enjoying things today! I may feel things were better back then, but there are awesome things today too! You can get into retro games, Go to video game conventions and do other things as well! (if you like this kind of thing)
Don't be a robot and fall in line like everyone else! Do what you like and enjoy it!
I do dwell in the past a LOT, but I also try to enjoy everything today!
Have a great day!
@@Yesterdays92 hey, thanks for you message! yeah great points, enjoy the present. your times were awesome tho, but I guess we have cool stuff here now as well. your music will never be topped tho ;) have a great day sir!

look at all the nice white people. go walk around a mall now, its the exact opposite...
Remember what they took from us.
This was my birthday month. I was 2 years old going 3 years old on July 2, 1991.
It's been 40 years since this was filmed back in July 2, 1991.
Pretty sad, back in the late 80's I loved going to the mall and walk around KB Toy Store and Radio Shack.
Same! Now i can't stand going to the mall. Nothing but Broccoli haired teenagers and 20-something year olds with dirty viking beards wearing dark clothing. The late 80's and early 90's were so much more fun. The neon colors, big hair, 80's synth pop music, the video games, mall decor/interior, just the simplicity of it all. fuck. :P
I was looking for old pictures and videos of Yesterday's Arcade when I found this. Hell of a nostalgia trip. I also saw an article featuring your game room. Says it was in Dayton. I live in Dayton too.
Power play was in Baytown,TX don’t forget to hit up Zipps in Dayton. Always fun.😄
San Jacinto Mall in Baytown reminds me of West Oaks Mall. It would have been called East Oaks Mall in Baytown.
$19,000 for a new Ford. In 2019 $47,000

Anyone remember the play area on the second floor? What was the name of it? I’m racking my brain trying to remember.
Physical Whimsical.
This is absolutely amazing!! Thanks for sharing!
A Montgomery Ward store and an old Ford in the mall? All is well-
Visited the mall today just to check it out and it was my first time. Wish I went to this mall back in these days, god it was so nostalgic watching this. They only have the spot next to a Macy’s I think. It’s just the food court and a few little stores opened and everything else is barricaded and closed off. The arcade looked awesome here! It’s nothing like that now, it’s just a small little section like the size of a store. Well I beat time crises 2 today so that was cool but yeah I had to see what this mall looked like when it was the place to be and glad to find this gem. Good vibes and good job on this video, y’all look like y’all was having a lot of fun.

Lived in Pasadena in the early 90s. Miss those days
Wow. I was in elementary when the mall went up. it was a very big deal for so much of this town's life. Everything about it at it's height will be a very sweet memory.
Wow.... thank you for uploading this. I dont even know how to feel. I miss my parents. My sister...Everyone and everything is just gone, now. I remember the glass in the food court..... the smell of the water fountains. The sound of your voice echoing off the brick floor... The toy corner in Montgomery Ward... The mysterious computer section in best buy, browsing CDs in Media Play.....
I've been to this mall first in March 2018, then 2019, then early 2020 before the pandemic. It's sad they're now going to demolish this place in December and replace it with a outdoor lifestyle center.
I watch all these kinds of videos. Society is ruined now. totally beyond saving.people were so much more relaxed and kind and free back then.
I never leave the house. Is this not what the world looks like anymore?

Despite being born in 2000, after this mall's downfall had already started, my grandma would bring he here all the time, and then later I did Tae Kwon Do there until we moved in 2011, I'll miss those sky murals with the clouds on the ceiling, that was my favorite thing about this place back then and still is, glad this video exists as a way to look back on a chunk of my childhood, even if I wasn't alive at the time this was filmed
Nice channel! I stumbled on this from a UA-cam video covering your home arcade collection. Amazing collection!
