I enjoyed playing my 1987 50 watt, Silver Jubilee, one 12 combo on stage back in the day. It covered many music genres and is fairly compact. Still have it.

I watched your videos, especially this one. Live your videos.
I bought a DSL100H used, manufactured 3/2017. Never loved the sound, kinda muddy so I replaced the tubes which had 2009 preamp tubes and 2017 power tubes.
Still sounded a bit muddy, not that Marshall bite. Bought a DSL100HR which blew my mind, great Marshall tone from clean to heavily distorted.
Comparing these side by side I was even more disappointed by the DSL100H sound. Thinking maybe I had a blown speaker I was swapping the speaker cables between my 2 cabs. I think I must have had the speaker cable not plugged into anything during testing. I set both amps to standby, but could have slipped iPad I went back and forth a half dozen times listening and testing.
Regardless now the amp has no sound, both cabs check out. The tubes are all glowing the same brightness, both preamp and power. These are matched JJ’s. The muddy sound and lack of bite is why I replaced the tubes.
Did I damage the motherboard or the transformer? What’s the most likely thing to fail with an open cable? The amp may have been on the way out anyway. It never sounded classic Marshall to me. Even my little MG15 solid state amp sounded better.

      Dave,
Thanks, and sorry to hear that. The DSL should have fuses for each output tube on the main board inside the chassis. Hopefully those blew and you don’t have any lasting damage.

      @@PsionicAudio thank you sir 🙏
The sound quality being muddy since day one when I bought this in June is troublesome. I’d think fuses either work or they don’t? I’ll get into the chassis and check the fuses.
The big problem is the muddy tone. Fresh JJ matched tubes still muddy. Not sure what shipping could cost from Washington state to you. I’d be very confident with you doing surgery on it. The amp loos brand new, only reason I bought it.

@ No worries, ampm works perfectly now. Oddest thing. I rocked the wattage from 50w to 100w and all is well. I have no idea 🤷‍♂️ The bad tone was definitely the loose speaker wire in the cab, wiggled like a 5 year olds loose tooth. Tightened all of the spade connectors and that solved the cab problem. But I fixed that before rocking the 100/50 switch. No logic explanation

When I was younger there was a tube tester in almost every store. With the price of tubes these days maybe we should go back to doing that. I guess you can buy tube testers easy enough nowadays. Cheap tubes were fun if you were a tube Junkie. I am a recovering tube Junkie.

Ayyyyy Lyle finally gets in the same head I have! I've had mine for 9 years, one full tube change and re-bias, zero issues in that dept since then. Can't remember the exact year I re-tube/biased it or how hot/cold. Probably shoulda wrote that down.

The Marshall branded tubes they used in the DSL and TSL amps are prone to noise and failure. They look kinda like JJs inside but there is no oxide coating on the plates. It's rare for me to find one in V1 that isn't noisy.

Considering that the DSL100H is only about 1/3 the price of a JCM800, and is arguably more versatile, it's hard to beat in my book.

Curious how you feel about the Synergy amp heads from Boutique Amp Distribution. Supposedly Dave Friedman, Mike Soldano, Bruce Egnator, and Steven Fryette all collaborated on its design. I know it’s a very different beast with interchangeable preamp modules that all have some differences between them, but I’m mostly curious about how the power amp section and transformers are built in the head, as that is the consistent part.

Crazy how much extra room there seems to be in there. Why not a more spacious pcb? Forgive me if I haven’t looked back far enough (I’ve been watching from this channel for a couple months but did try a search of this channel) but it would be great to see the cleaning routine for switches and pots as you talked about here but we didn’t see. I bought an 80s Marshall and it came with unbelievably crackly pots. I tried my best to get cleaner in there (from front and back) with only a little success. Checked it in for a repair and my tech says he was able to clean it! No cost other than the bench fee (I’ll call that a bargain!) but it’d be great to see some tips for attacking frighteningly noisy pots and switches.

Honestly, these look better built than the JCM2000s. Pots still look cheap as hell, but at least the power tubes aren't going to have a board go conductive.

hello thank you for the video, i' ve bought one of them, i repaired it 'cause was fault and now is working, however i noted someone modified the bias circuit and now this is fixed and no more adjustable. I don't like so much this mod, do you know something about this mod?
furthemore the head is very crispy , too much on my opinion, is it possible the bias mod is the cause? it is equipped with 4 GT Gooves tubes on final and sovtek ecc83 in the preamp.
Thank you so much for your attention

  • @paroblynn
    @paroblynn 2 роки тому

Have you had to work on the mid 2000's DSLs? The 2005 DSLs remedied the bias drift of the earlier ones. The new DSLs are decent (the 100h and the 40c) and they are what they are, pcb based stuff but like you see, very easy to work on. A hell of a lot easier to rip that thing apart than some of the other alternatives.

Pots and jacks look cheap. I also don't like pcb-mounted tube sockets, but lots of amps have that.
At least the power tubes are chassis-mounted. These amps don't cost that much compared to other
tube amps, so I guess it's an okay deal. I think I seen these over at Sweetwater the other day for around $1,200.
A 100w EVH is twice that price.
