How the hell did Fox think hiring John Moore (of Max Pain/Payne fame, and not the good kind) for a Die Hard film was going to end anyway but awfully?!?

As I have always said about this movie, "I dont know who Bruce Willis is playing here, but it sure as hell isnt John McClane". Without doubt the most crushing and disappointing movie experience of my entire life, couldnt believe just how bad this movie was. & Dull...HOW can a Die Hard movie be dull!..But they made that happen.

The fact Bruce has lost the ability to speak sheds a lot of light as to why some diaglog literally had to be reused. He suffered in slience so we never wouldn't known, hindsight is just 20 20 in this situation

We've had this box set for years, and I've still never gotten around to seeing it after never once hearing anything good about it. My wife's seen it, and she said it wasn't worth bothering with-and she's probably the bigger Die Hard fan between the two of us.

I’m a firm believer in being you’re own critic. I never listen to someone’s else’s opinion because it may not correlate with mine. I’ll take their opinion into account but that has never stopped me from watching something, if I had any type of interest. There are so many movies that people swear are terrible and I enjoy the hell out of them.

I also saw this at a marathon. I was on such a high after seeing 1-4 that this one was absolutely crushing. At least I got to see the other ones on the big screen at the Cineramadome in LA.

I also went to Die Hard marathon back in 2013 leading up to the new film. While it was nice to see the first 3 on the big screen, watching this one was very disappointing. But, I don't hate it as much as everyone else (including Cody's review). There are some good moments, and some bad moments. But there were a few good moments that outweighed the bad

Being fair, with horror franchises, most times, you start to notice when a franchise is taking a nose dive. The Die Hard franchise, pretty much took a massive nose dive with this movie. No question, they dropped the ball here, they really dropped the ball.
P.S. I legit forgot there was a 5th Die Hard movie, until I was scrolling through UA-cam, saw this video, and watching it I was like, oh yeah, that one.

I really agree with your opening statements. The way I see it, whether you loved or hated any other Die Hard film, you knew that the people behind and in front of the camera cared about what they were making. It was evident in all the previous installments that they were aiming high each time. They were events, big and bombastic. This one doesn't even pretend to give a damn.

I remember years ago, on UA-cam seeing an interview with Bruce Willis and the cast of live free or die hard discussing the movie. And one of the question asked to Bruce Willis was something along the lines “what made him interested in doing another die hard so many years later since the last one?” And Bruce talked about different plot ideas for sequels he was approached with over the years, and one of the ideas for a die hard 4 was a story about John McClane going to another country to rescue his estranged son who is in trouble with terrorist. And he said he hated that idea and the plot of the estranged son didn’t feel like a die hard story to him. The interview to me showed he had a care for this franchise, his character, and to ensure fans had quality entertainment. Evidence to support this is an old video of Kevin smith discussing live free or die hard (before him and Bruce couldn’t stand each other I think). And how one time on set Bruce called a studio executive unhappy with the writing and threatened to walk away from the film if the writing for the character Thomas Gabriel didn’t improve. Now to me it just shows that from 2007-2013 that care in quality and story left the house and never came back when this movie was released with that rejected plot returning I knew Bruce was done. I like you saw this in the theater and with my doubts of it being a good film closer to release we’re hitting hard and the trailers didn’t help it any imo, I still walked out disappointed and baffled on how this was green lit as a die hard sequel, and at this point I think the idea of a 6th and finale die hard movie is shelved indefinitely, so with that off the table for a proper send off, I would have been happy with live free or die hard being the last one but since it’s not if this indeed is the last die hard movie we get I’ll except this ending over a possible terrible, tired cash grab sequel that a studio would throw out there with no intent to care about its fans.

This movie fails as a Die Hard movie. It's just a generic run of the mill action movie. In that regard, this movie is ok. The action was nothing special. The twist was obvious. I'm not 100% on this, but supposedly the studio wanted to make another R rated Die Hard movie after the so-called 'controversial PG-13 rated' Die Hard movie. Die Hard 4 was a solid movie despite it being PG-13(I think I saw the R rated version of that, it's been a while since I've seen that one) They wanted to make another R rated Die Hard movie and they give us this cheap generic action movie. As a Die Hard movie, this gets a 0. As the cheap run of the mill action movie that this one is, it gets 5/10.

This franchise needed a great finale. We got a video game here and a terrible one at that. Bruce Willis started cashing checks and has never looked back. Yeah I hate this movie.

Oh, this one's gonna be good. 😀 Not surprising the same director did the Max Payne movie.

@Just-Aguy I only watch the scene where Lucy drops John off at the airport and pretend to think of it as an alternate ending of 4 where he is actually flying to LA to reconcile with Holly McClane and NOT go to Russia, THE END. That’s where I shut the 5th one off after that

This one was a hard lesson in tapering my expectations for any movie. I was so excited all week leading up to seeing it that weekend, and was just confused and pissed afterward. I've never even watched it again. I found the blu ray in a pawn shop for 2 bucks not long ago, and just bought it to go along with the others. I hate this piece of crap. Lol.

Yeah I remember when me and my ex watched this and spent practically the entire film rolling our eyes. Completely neuters the franchise in every way with Willis, in my opinion, sleepwalking through the script. Awful, awful film.

I dont know which is more heartbreaking to be honest. Freddy's Dead or Die Hard 5.

How did they fuck it up so bad? I don't even know what the plot was and that was not JOHN M'CLANE....it was a different character.

This film seems like the Star Trek V of the Die Hard franchise. I certainly don't have any motivation to watch this instalment. I'll rewatch Hard Boiled instead.

It's kinda sad/humorous that the one "Die Hard" movie that started out in development with the intention of being a Die Hard movie is the least Die Hard of the bunch. 1 and 2 based on unrelated thriller novels, 3 was intended as a Brandon Lee movie then a Lethal Weapon sequel, 4 was based on an article someone wrote for "Wired" magazine. And now that Disney's acquisition of Fox nixed any sequels and Bruce is retiring from acting due to his medical condition, THIS is the last we will see of Bruce as the John McClane character.

Sadly some actors just take scripts just because it's a paycheck. Bruce Willis sadly i believe has become this type of actor.

AGDTDH was stab to all the fans by Bruce Swillis! He was betting the fans would still come even if the film was 💩. VOD Bruce is what we’ve been getting for the past 10yrs……. So sad 😞.

Another thing I think Die Hard needs is a strong sidekick. A huge contrast to McLane but otherworldly helpful in these quests. We got Al with his twinkies and tragic story battling inept higher-ups on the ground, informing McLane all the way. Zeus and his racially unambiguous views, able to call McLane out on his bullshit, all while being Samuel L Jackson. And I think Justin Long held up well using his techie genius to piss off McLane.
Die Hard 2 suffered here the way it did with its villains. The homeless guy probably is the closest but then there's the ATC guy and Fred Thompson, lol. They're just like how you described the villains - too many cooks in the kitchen. In fact, the deciding factor for me between Die Hard WAV and the OG was that I loved SLJ enough to edge out Al.
