  • I explain what I learned reading the 1990 1HZ workshop repair manual about putting a new belt on and timing it.
These is a number of confusing videos around of ppl describing to put the timing belt on using referencing TDC as the marks on the pullies to line the belt up. The manual states it is Bottom Dead Center!!! to align the belt. NOT Top Dead Center.
The reason ppl have gotten confused rightly so is because the BDC flathead screw-head slot that is used it actually at the top on the motor area, same as the lower pully. I was even very confused myself.
To time the injector pump all three pulleys align to TDC, the two belt pulleys marked TDC and the main lower big crankshaft pully has a ‘v’ mark.
1). Align all three to TDC. Top Dead Center. About 9 o’clock on the belt pulley!!
2). Take bolt out of the Center back on the injector pump and insert and screw in dial indicator. In the Center of the 6 injector lines going off the pump!
3). Turn main big crankshaft with a big socket backwards slowly watching the dial go backwards until it stops.
4). Zero the gauge at this location. By twisting the face of the gauges zero to where the hand is pointing!
5). Not move the crankshaft forward to TDC again.
6). Undo nuts and bracket that holds injector pump and twist pump until it goes to between 1.03 and 1.09. Tighten nuts to pump and brackets again. Pump should be now tuned.
7). Repeat these steps again to check.
My 1HZ 2000 Toyota Coaster is bit tricky to do this as have to take the radiator out and fan and not much room in there getting under on the ground.
This timing applies to a 1HZ Land-cruisers as well.

I don’t suppose this applies to the later 2007 onward 1hz. The FSM states TDC.

Great video. One question. What about the factory mark on the pump and the housing ? Shouldn’t that marks align?

That is correct. Though that can be adjusted a bit to sometimes. The new pump I bought didn’t have any makes. Its about the centre on my old factory one.

Mate just querying your spec for injection timing. I have these figures. Landcruiser 75/80 series 1.03 - 1.09mm @ TDC, 100 series .85-.91mm @ TDC. Toyota Coaster 2000 is .65-.71mm @ TDC w/- ACSD and .85-.91 @ TDC w/out ACSD. I have a 2000 Coaster which I am about to check. I just had the timing done by a diesel mechanic a few months ago but don't know what he set it to so about to find out. The bloody engine started to missfire not long afterwards, now blows out shitloads of white smoke after 1200rpm to about 3000rpm, misses its arse off while this is happening but comes good under more throttle. So I will check it to see if this is the problem.

@@jaffasoft8976 I bought a workshop manual disc on E-bay that had all sorts of info on several models with different engines. The disc did not work as intended so I used file manager & went through the entire discs folders & found the pages related to any service data. Interesting though that a 2000 model Landcruiser with the same engine has the spec of 1.09mm but the coaster is less. Mine has the ACSD so I guess it should be .65-.71mm according to the service data. One thing I am not certain on is whether the spec is for australian model coaster. For all I know it could be for european models? Had a good look under the bus today & the marks on the housing lines up with the mark on casing, so it must be close. I have yet to figure out how the hell I am going to get the dial gauge into position to check the setting, as you know room is limited. I can't drive it as it is atm, if the timing is correct then I may have other serious issues. where have you seen the china knock off pumps & injectors?
