    I work at a brokerage in tx and one thing I can tell you is that you have to read the rate con. They are not all the same. Also if you book loads closer to the end of the day the broker is more likely to move on the rate because they need the load moved.

      Is that dispatching only? Or did I see you have employed drivers? If dispatching only- How many trucks would you cover for that kind of money and at what percent?

    Its not just where the load is picking up, but also where it is going. Thats what determines the rate. Been doing this 25 years and i can tell you this, dont always look at the rate. Look where its going. What terrain you have to drive through to get it there. All that matters. Good video though. Like watching you young guys trying to figure it out lol

      Yes 100% agree. That's what I was getting at by saying establish 3-5 routes you will want to run but I could've clarified the variables a bit more. Thank you Chris!

    My cpm is under $1 that’s the beauty of older paid for truck. Even when I get my own trailer it should stay under it, however when I add the 60cpm for myself so I’m at $1.60 so anything over it from my 100k miles I drive is adding on top from $60k a year. I’m in Midwest so I have a great market imo, owned my truck for 5 months total miles so far has been easily over $3.5 round trip, I think main issue for most people is overhead and they dig themselves in debt so they end up running cheap crap cause they’re forced to. If I go to area there’s no loads I just go home. Main advice I’d say is build good relationships with brokers, even when loads are dry those brokers will give you a rate well above what they have posted.

    Congratulations! You're the first trucker/business person in the trucking industry that I've come across on UA-cam that gets that they need to pay themselves; and that it's an expense that is included in their breakeven number. I would disagree with the 50k amount and make it at least 75K. Walmart drivers are making 100k a year and they aren't running a business. Actually, you should add burdened labor to include medical, dental, 401k and PTO. And, after run this exercise, you'll soon discover you can't get loads that pay enough and you really can't make a decent profit being in the trucking industry. You need to negotiate directly with the shippers to even have a shot at it. 😊

    5k is on the lower spectrum of the earning curve. Coming from a place of experience, the market fluctuates and changes all the time. Currently as I'm leaving a comment, Atlanta isn't in a great shape and I wouldn't consider running around that area with it as your main hub. With time even if you drive all over the US, you will learn that there are several hot spots for every type of equipment and if you plan your routes accordingly to arrive in those hot spots once a week or so, you could be making double of what is talked about in the video.

    • @Gill22
      @Gill22  3 роки тому +4

      Yeah I wholeheartedly agree. I don’t ever want to exaggerate numbers and give people false hope because there’s a lot of that going around in the industry. I think I left out the part where I said you can make $5K if you drive regional/local only, you’re home 3 days a week, and you only do dry van loads which is not bad at all.

    So if over time you are able to negotiate better rates, would that just be called learning the ropes/experience? How to apply good common sense to getting rates sooner than later? Like buying a used car, one needs to know when and how to negotiate but who does that regularly like getting(trying) to get loads a few times per week? But the price is everything while you have to manage your CPM for your base is predicated on the lanes you chose. And the steps need to be slow and deliberate. Good stuff here and I'm listening.

    A big problem is that so many owner-operators are going so cheap on the rates. The shippers know the mistake they are making and capitalize on it. The operators will run their trucks into the ground and not have the cash reserves to repair them. They will go out of business, and the next operator can hop in and perpetuate the same mistake. So, for the smart operators out there they will have a hard time getting the proper pay because there's always going to be a lot of new operators unwittingly going too cheap and giving shippers a steal of a deal.

    Hey I’m new to the dat loading board and was wondering do I need to be registered with a broker to work with them because I call one to book a load but he couldn’t find my mc in his system and told me I have to sign up. So I was wondering if it’s like that with all broker

    • @Gill22
      @Gill22  2 роки тому

      That’s totally normal. You’ll have to sign up with each new broker you book a load with. Just ask them to send you all the details they need from you to set you up. Have all that info stored in one easy to access file so you can forward it along with the completed application.

    At the end of the day.. it depends on market.. the way the market is right now.. it’s easy to make up your numbers etc.. when market was low.. people were happy just to find a load.

    • @Gill22
      @Gill22  3 роки тому

      I kind of agree.We’ve operated during tough markets as well but we’ve always maintained a very profitable business because we always knew our numbers. Your CPM is the basis of your business which every trucker should know. If you can’t find a way to make $1.80/mile, you won’t be in business for long. Any money you make past your CPM is profit and it becomes subjective on how to maximize it. I just included steps that i thought would help give truckers a smaller target to focus on such as include your desired salary per year as driver pay, look at historical rates over the past week, understanding leverage points in negotiations, etc. All these things will definitely help you make more money and have a better target to shoot for than just trying to make more than your CPM.
      Even during tough markets, this has been a winning strategy. I rather pick up less loads and make more money per load than pick up many loads for a lower rate!

    • @cortransport
      @cortransport 3 роки тому

      @@Gill22 right.. like i said with a high market you can do whatever you want; yes even do “less loads.” When market is low… it’s whatever you can get just to get home. Even in difficult times I hear carriers speak with a big mouth about not hauling cheap loads.. but we all know better.

    @Gill22 I'm in Atlanta, GA. Can I use the DAT board to find loads for 26' Box Trucks?

    • @Gill22
      @Gill22  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Darel!
      Yes you can! To find these loads just sign into DAT, click the search loads option, under "Truck" click "Only", and finally in the field next to it just type in "SB" which will give you option to select "Straight Box Truck". You can also specify the length of your truck as well.
      If you're having trouble following along, I made a video walking through how to book loads on DAT that you can watch as well.
      Hope this helps!
