  • How to replace the center support Hanger/Carrier Bearing on various 2015-2019era Dodge Charger, Challenger models.
    1. Remove Driveshaft from the car and mark all components with a paint marker or center punch. THIS IS IMPORTANT - to retain your balance when reassembling the driveshaft.
    2. Use a flat blade screw driver and release/remove the boot clamps.
    3. "Lightly" place driveshaft in a vice to help hold the shaft.
    4. Use a flat blade screw driver to slightly peel the metal can from the Hi-speed cv joint. The metal can is rolled/crimped over to retain it onto the cv pod. Once its partially peeled up - you can tap the can and boot back.
    5. The boot/metal can will be in the way - but you should make notes and mark how the cv components are installed in relation to the splines and the outer cv pod/race and other marks made earlier.
    6. Using a small flat blade screw driver - feel your way around and find the break in the large outer snap ring. Use the screw driver to peel the snap ring up and outer of the groove.
    7. Place a small pan or rag down the catch any of the balls/cv parts that will fall out. Grab ahold of the shaft and pull the 2 shafts apart.
    8. Again - mark the inner race in relation to the splined shaft. Place the shaft in a press with a bearing separator on the back side of the race. Press on the end of the shaft and the inner race will slide off and past the inner snap ring.
    9. Slide the boot off. Again, place the shaft in the press and remove the carrier bearing.
    10. Install carrier bearing. Use a piece of tubing that is the same size as the bearings inner race - and drive the bearing on with a hammer.
    11. Install the boot - do not clamp yet.
    12. Remove any snap ring remnants and any major burrs from the splined shaft. Install the inner race back onto the shaft. You may want to place a small tack weld at the end of the splined shaft to ensure the inner race does not walk off (or, find a suitable inner snap ring replacement).
    13. Place fresh grease in the "outer" cv pod.
    14. Dab some grease liberally on the inner race grooves. Place the floating race over the inner race. Use grease to help hold the balls in the floating race windows. Grasp your hand around it to hold the balls into the inner race and the floating race.
    15. Install back into the outer cv pod. MAKE SURE - to align the cv properly (Narrow - to - Wide). If you do not do this = the cv joint will not rotate properly and will be locked up - causing vibration or early carrier bearing failure.!! Ensure all your previous alignment marks are as close as possible to retain the original balancing of the driveshaft.!
    16. Install large outer snap ring.
    17. Clean the outer cv pod and the metal boot can area. Use RTV between these 2 surfaces.
    18. Slide metal can over the outer cv pod. Try and use a hammer to "round" the metal of the can over - and into the groove of the outer cv pod. You may want to place a liberal amount on the outside of these mating surfaces. As the grease wears in and heats up - it could leak out of these mating areas if not crimped properly.
    19. Again, ensure the when the 2 sections are joined up - you can grab one end of the driveshaft and move it up/down/left/right to ensure the cv is assembled properly.

    You guys know they make a 2 piece carrier so you dont have to physically take the driveshaft apart or even take it out of the car right?

    Do not listen to his comment about not having to put the small retaining snap ring back on, he says the shaft can't come out in his comment. The shaft can separate in the car going down the road and can cause the transmission housing to Crack from the vibration.

      I agree. So I just took one of these apart. He's right that small CV joint clip destroys itself during removal. Any idea where to get one? I bought an assortment kit but they seem to be the wrong thickness. I estimate the round wire clip to be 25-28mm, and .060" ( or 1.61mm) thick. I cant seem to find that at the local parts stores. Seems to be alot of these being done. I'm curious if everyone is just leaving them off.

    I need a part number for the complete joint at the rear of the tranny, and advise how to replace it. Is it by press?

    Replaced mine followed all the instructions took it apart, replaced the bearing everything was okay but after we put it on the car above 50 / 55 Miles I felt some kind of vibration and noise coming from the Driveshaft what could be the issue? should I take it to Balance the Driveshaft or something?

      Its hard to say what "changed" to give you a vibration. Did you find a new snap ring to retain the inner race (or weld it in place) so it wont slide off the splines?. Did you mark the shafts before disassembly and rephase/align the 2 sections when assembling?. Did the CV get reassembled correctly (when done - the cv should work freely and allow 360deg flex between the 2 shafts).. Did the new carrier bearing spin freely after installation (spinning it by hand to ensure no rough spots could be felt vibrating the shaft) ?.. Check for damage to the tubing or see if a balance weight got knocked off the tubing while working on it.. If unusually excessive force was required to remove the inner race - maybe the splined stub area/tubing was tweaked out of alignment..

    How’d you get the star thing off the end with the small snap ring

    • @namyzzo
      @namyzzo  5 місяців тому

      Using a bearing press, slowly press the stub through.. This will damage the snap ring!. I do not know any way to do it without damaging the ring. You must find a replacement snap ring or possibly tack weld the spline to the inner star shaped race.!

    How do you get that big snap ring out? Using picks still can't seem to start it?

    • @namyzzo
      @namyzzo  Рік тому

      I just used 2 small little flat blade screw drivers. Poke it from the side and get the screw driver under it. Work it around like your doing a tire on a bicycle. Start near where the snap is split. Youll get it eventually.

    • @namyzzo
      @namyzzo  6 місяців тому +1

      You may hear a thump when taking off (if the rubber is torn). Vibrations when accelerating. Typically the bearing is ok - just the rubber is torn - but a bad bearing may create a noise or vibration.

      ..what problem are you having?. send a pic or post a video. namyzzo AT gmail
      dot com. When you press the "star" piece / inner race back onto the splined stub = make sure to remove any major burrs caused by the removal process (snap ring creates gouges/burrs when removing).

    How did you get the bigger lock ring out ?

    • @namyzzo
      @namyzzo  6 місяців тому +1

      If you are talking about the large one that keeps the 2 shafts together = Using really thin/small flat blade screwdrivers to get under the ring and peal it up and out. Work it out like "a bicycle chain" over a sprocket.
