One thing I will say to keep in mind about task lighting:
If you're one of those people that like to rearrange your room every once and while, wall sconces and hanging pendant lights won't work well with that....once that lights are hung/attached to the wall, without a lot of work moving/refinishing walls, they're not moving. Which means the bed stays wherever those lights are.
Just something to keep in mind!!

Nick - Preach! My parents still have sheets (and blankets and pillows) from before I was born -- I'm 42. I recently visited them and the sheets they used to make up the guest bed were for their California king bed and the guest bed is a full size. Also, my dad kept arguing with me that the guest bed is a queen size and not a full. This combination of madness broke me a bit and I insisted that we clean out the linen closet and re-organize it. My parents have been in their house since 1984, and this was the first time they ever went through the linen closet - EVER. Anyway, very proud that I was able to get them to part with some of the old linens. I then bought a brand new set of sheets, pillows, and quilt for the guest bed (it is a full size mattress). My parents now use the guest bedroom to nap in.

So, I recently bought a house of my own after the end of my 25 year marriage. My previous house was modern/minimalist, which was “cool and “slick” but lacked warmth and personality (a bit snarky, but the house was my exes idea and he really kept control of the decor). Anyway, I started to purchase things for the new place before I moved in and according to Nick’s aesthetic, I did pretty well in my new bedroom, which is pretty large). I ticked most of the boxes he mentioned (except for extra blankets on the bed). The look is kind of “girly glam” which I am really liking. After the minimal look for the past 10 years I wanted something pretty and cozy (my motto became “screw modernist, I’d rather be cozy 😏). Wish I could upload a couple of pics and get his (and other’s) opinions. ☺️

Here’s a bedroom “storage hack” that works for me so I thought I’d share: you know the hall trees that usually go in a mud room or entryway? They usually have a little bench, some shelves, hooks for coats, scarves, maybe a bar to put hangers on. Get one for the bedroom.
It may seem unorthodox, but I find it super practical. While Nick is absolutely right to point out under-the-bed storage, that works really well for seasonal stuff, like he said, but there’s every-day storage that can make a room messy: I need a place to put a couple decorative pillows I don’t use for sleeping (I don’t just want to throw them on the floor), or what about clothing items you pull out of the closet and wear them for a bit; they are not ready to go into the laundry bin just yet, but you don’t want to put them back in the closet with the fresh cloths. What about your nightwear or loungewear? Where does that stuff go during the day? For me, a hall tree is a great solution to keep all these things organized in one place and prevent my bedroom AND closet from becoming a mess. It even goes well in your bathroom if you have an on-suite. The hall tree is a great transitional space for keeping your transitional items (items not quite in need of storage but not in immediate use) organized and neat. And they come in such varieties of design styles that you can probably find one that looks like “it belongs” in your bedroom/on-suite. I highly recommend it.

Interesting idea. I can envision hats and a scarf on the hooks, decorative pillows on the bench overnight, a throw blanket. But in the bedroom especially, I don’t like clutter or chaos, which seems as though it would be both, hanging workout clothes and nightgown where they are seen all day. I have a row of hooks on the bathroom door, one across the inside of one closet to keep some things, and a shoe storage bag with pockets for incidentals, gloves, muffs, hats, scarves seasonally. I like your “out of box” thinking though!

So glad you posted this, thank you!! I had this exact idea yesterday, as I'm trying to make my room more ADHD friendly, but I totally second guessed myself! At the end of the day, I know I'm not going to get all the clothes where they need to go. Might as well dedicate a place for them so it at least looks intentional and everything doesn't get wrinkled.

    • @mgu513
      @mgu513 2 роки тому +4

@Sharon Fleshman It's going so well! I'm actually undiagnosed myself, but I struggle with depression and my psychiatrist thinks it might stem from adhd. No proper diagnosis yet. Organizing has been helping a ton. The key has been to throw away all notions of how it's "supposed" to be done and just look for what is the easiest for me. Baskets have helped, but they need to either be clear or labeled. No lids. I changed all trashcans to some that have wide tops that are open, and somewhere within arms reach in most spaces. My dog gets into the trash all the time so they are stashed inside cabinets or on top of counters. I assigned and labeled zones in my fridge for certain categories of things, so I don't have to make choices about where to put things away. A labeled and contained place for everything so you don't have to make decisions and when things don't get put away the first time it makes it easier to tidy up when you do have a good day. I say this as if it were easy, but it's been a long journey and my meds are sometimes used off label to treat adhd, so I might be betting a boost there. Start by thinking of a single task you perform daily but very inefficiently or that you need to be doing but it doesn't get done. Then start by organizing the space and things needed to perform that task. Try to take away as many choices and decisions you can. Think about how to make it as easy as humanly possible. For me, once I started with the things I need to get myself to work, then little by little other parts of my apartment have come together. Good luck on your journey!

With our tiny bedroom we cannot add anything but we did invest in great sheets/duvet cover sets that match the chocolate brown wall I painted. I was really hoping you'd mention the position of the bed. We stayed with several family members in America this Summer and every single guest room had the bed directly under the window. So every morning we lay there staring at the ceiling or a blank wall or a single painting. I never realized how unpleasant that was but when we got home it was almost euphoric to lie in bed looking our our big windows at 3 trees of different colors with birds in them.

Great advice, per usual! Furniture with storage is a must-have for me. A tip for anyone shopping for a bed frame with drawers, consider drawer placement on the bed frame. Most bed frames have drawers on the longest side of the bed that are blocked from opening if you put a nightstand next to them. If you plan to use your drawers frequently as I do, think about a floating shelf or a three-drawer system that leaves space for your nightstands.

I recently added a task light to one side of my bed. Needless to say, it was one of the elements that really pulled the layout together. It's next to a small nightstand. A table lamp is on the other side on an oversized nightstand. It balances.
Above the bed is a good size textured ball lamp.
I'm not quite done with the reorganization, but you are right with this asymmetrical look.

Re pendant lights: You can also get pendant lights without having to affix it permanently and dealing with putting electrical in. There are pendant lights now that are plug and switch, and you can use a strong Command hook and affix it to the ceiling. All Command hooks have a weight limit so you need to find something within the limit, but they're surprisingly strong. I'd head they were great, but didn't really believe, but now I'm a believer! I currently have a wicker pendant light hanging from a Command hook, and it was super easy to install, I even used a second hook to direct the cord where I wanted it to go.

As much as adding a rug on top of carpeting is a home decor faux paus (Did I even spell that right?), doing so was a huge improvement over the carpeting, which I promise myself to replace with the flooring that matches what's in the rest of the house.

Thank you for the Brooklinen recommendation. So hard to find great sheets. Expensive doesn't always mean luxurious. I also support the floating shelf nightstand! I was gifted a bed but it only left 18 inches on each side of the bed. I agree the bed is big but it was free. By using the floating shelves it made it look bigger than it would had I shoved a box on the floor on either side. Huge difference.

Th ewindows are small so I hung the curtins ( same color of wall) from ceiling height to floor.

I´m obsessed with linen sheets. They´re expensive, so I´ve bought a set, like once a year. I have 3 sets and a mixed linen cotton one. They´re so beautiful that I rarely use a bedcover on top. Plus they get softer and lovelier with every wash/dry cycle. I mix them up with quality cotton fitted sheets and pillows and I love it. But I have a cupboard stuffed full of other sheets that are just sitting there, I need to do something about that...

I’m thinking I will have “daylight” lighting in the main living areas, but then have very warm lighting on dimmers for late evening, to switch the mood to “sundown.” My mom sometimes has great difficulty with her circadian rhythm. I think this will help her, and also create that serenity I’m aiming for. And definitely I’ll take your tips about bedroom lighting. Thanks!

Anyway, I’m wondering if you might consider doing a video on working with knee walls/sloped walls and ceilings. I live in an 80 year old Cape Cod and the upstairs is bananas. I really want it to be my master bedroom but these walls are so frustrating. They begin sloping at ~24” from the floor, which is much lower than I usually see when I try to search for inspiration. Thanks in advance!

I have a question about what to do when your bed has a beautiful headboard and only the headboard. I love it, but that leaves the rest of the bed to see the frame. Can you still get away with a bed skirt these days, or do I have to build a frame for it. I dont want to do that, and what kind would you suggest? Also, 2nd question is: I have a queen size comforter, but it doesnt hang over like i see in most photos. Should I start buying king sized comforters?

My bedroom is so narrow that with my queen size platform bed, the only way to have a night stand of sorts (for now) was to add a floating shelf slightly above the headboard and put two matching lamps on it. The design on the dark grey accent wall behind the headboard that the lamp lights throw on the wall above the bed is magnificent, and goes amazingly with my subdued checked design scheme for the room. A surprise treat! The shelf doesn't provide the best functionality, but with remote outlets for the lamps, at least the lighting element is a convenience, and provides a layering of lighting options along with the dimmable overhead light for the room. The final piece of the puzzle will be having 4" wide × 3 ft long custom night stands built in on both sides of the bed for stowing cell phones, cups of water and/or reading glasses. (Yes, unfortunately, 4" is not a typo!) I just have to find the right contractor.

Until recently we've always stored things under our queen size bed - mostly out of season clothing, and clothing that no longer fit but that I couldn't bring myself to get rid of. Several months ago we got a new queen bed frame. This time it's goodbye dust ruffle/bedskirt hiding who-knows-what under the bed, and hello mid-century modern with the bedspread neatly tucked in around the mattress and the wood legs showing - goodbye years of unworn clothes hiding under the bed. I cannot tell you how freeing this was, to get rid of the literal crap under the bed. The few out of season clothing items I kept are easily stored in my closet. The clothes that didn't fit and never were going to fit again were donated to a thrift store, and are no longer taunting me. It's been a breath of fresh air to get rid of all that stuff. The new bed frame has a lower profile, and we don't need a box spring with it, and now the room looks so much bigger. The only down side is our cats had to find new places to hide.

I just moved into an old apartment where the bedroom has a really weird layout - one wall is at 45 degrees and the only two light fixtures are in random places on the walls (and I've no budget to move them). I've found in this case that going with extreme symmetry in the areas I CAN control (bed, nightstands etc.) has brought some regularity to those irregular elements, and they now look intentional rather than nonsensical.

It seems like almost everyone puts a huge rug under the bed leaving it peeking out at the sides. I guess that works better with neutrals. I usually prefer a bolder color palette and like to put smaller rugs around the bed, usually one on each side. That way, I can appreciate the rugs in their entirety and they make more of a statement.
