Sorry, I disagree. Barbie didn’t become vomitously over saturated in pink & foo foo lala crap until the 80s, which is NOT the “classic Barbie” era- the 50s & 60s are. Pre-80s Barbies, especially the Mod era, are the best looking & most fashionable ones they’ve ever released until the more modern Fashionistas & Barbie extras. As someone who was born in 1967 who lived Barbies and absolutely HATED the change to the neon pink Superstar era nonsense, I almost completely stopped collecting Barbies from the Rocker era to the 2000s because I could not STAND it. Pink is not inherently feminine (until the 1930s it was considered a MASCULINE color, as it is “light red” and red was considered manly) and I am SO SICK of it being shoved down girl’s & women’s throats as if it is.
Forgot to mention that blue used to be considered FEMININE because of its association with the blue robes of Virgin Mary. It was too “soft” a color to be for men. The reversal came about because of 1. A rich man buying the iconic paintings colloquially known as Pinkie and Blue Boy, which made people think that pink for girls & blue for boys was something that had been around for centuries and 2. Department stores codifying gendered colors do they could sell more baby & children’s clothes (can’t share hand me down clothes between children of different genders that way.) Theirs is nothing feminine or “empowering” about a woman liking pink, it’s just people giving in to long outdated gender tropes.
Extra Ken is a must for me. He is too unique of a Ken doll for me to pass up. My favorite Barbies are the snow themed extra doll, the beach doll in the striped swimsuit, and the totally hair doll.

Everything about this makes me so excited. the pastel beachy summer colors, the fabric clothing with stitched details and hems, the furniture that's approaching early 2000s barbie levels of appeal, the accessories being fairly detailed and practical. I really appreciate the direction Mattel is going

Even the Totally Hair dolls are so much better! Do they have a new design team? These are steps above the junk we’ve gotten the past few years. ❤❤
I think the smartest move that Barbie can make is what they’re doing right now, which is essentially diversifying. they have one line (the extras) that’s super campy in over the top and then you have the other line (fashionistas) that introduces the diverse characteristics and looks, but is grounded in “realism”. So that way essentially “everyone” can be happy which ever way you prefer a Barbie. For me I definitely am more on the extra side but I can see how the fashionistas are so so important, especially to younger Barbie fans. And then once they make the more diverse characters in fashionistas, we eventually start to see them roll out in things like the extra line.
I love the beach Barbie and Ken but not seeing them on my Amazon in the US . I have 3 of the Extra Fly dolls ordered. I have been collecting Barbie’s for over 50 years and I agree that there has been a struggle lately. I have been disappointed in some of the quality. Extra has hits and misses, but I love the Extra fly edition so far!
It seems to me Mattel's got more money now from the success of Monster High and getting the Disney princesses back. So the money is going in to better Barbies with more details!
I love the Ken. I love the minis and the mini minis. I've got a few but what more. You can also transfer a Chelsea head on the mini bodies and make her more articulated. I'm still working on obtaining the first wave. LOL

I really hope Barbie is coming back. As far as the Holiday Barbie's over the last few years I haven't bought any new ones cause I haven't felt they are worth the price. I'm hoping this year changes that. To me the Holiday Barbie's of the 90's and early 2000's are the best. I CANNOT wait to get the Barbie Extra Fly dolls! they are just so good! I hope you're right and they are bringing Barbie back to her Glittery Pink Glam roots!! Oh and I have the Vanessa doll, her hair is AMAZINGLY soft and has curls but no glue or gel in it. And the purple top Made to Move doll is an exact match for her. I don't like the bodies they are using on the budget Little Mermaid dolls.
I've gone back to collecting vintage 60s Barbies. They don't take up much space, plus it's fun giving them a makeover. Just won my first vintage doll on eBay for a good price. Plus, you can't beat the quality. The dress I'm going to put her in has a working zipper
I love the Ken and hope they make more! I kind of liked that the first resort doll had plain hair. When I was young, I wish they would make dolls with all sorts of colors in their hair, but so often it is poorly done - it needs more variation in color to look realistic. I wish they'd do more clip in hair pieces. Maybe it's just me, but I think they do Ken wrong, putting him in casuals and shorts all the time. I know he's had careers, but I don't really remember any, and as a kid, he was always just a bum lol. I want more classy outfits for him. I guess in Malibu shorts with a blazer is done, but I'm in Tennessee, and that boy needs pants lol. He needs to be able to go on an interview, a business meeting, a formal date. I have little interest in Disney, but love unusual "barbies", so Vanessa is on my wish list!
The outfits on the Fly Girls and Boy dolls are coordinated with good color choices, it looks to be beach concert theme that is really neat. The pink and white bathing suit and sarong is so nice and I thought with a different shade of reddish blond would bring variety but then the next few dolls had the rainbow color streaks so maybe Barbie with usual golden blond isnt too normal in appearance. For myself something i really like with doll clothes is hollographic prints that are sold with resin nail art kits. So features of stars, hearts, feathers, cresent moon, flowers, smiley faces in metallic foil over tulle mesh is good details. And fabric of cordorouy, denim, overalls, velvet is very classic of popular dolls throughout the decades.

BTW I don't know about in Europe but here in the States the surfboard his holding is called a "boogie board", at least around where I live 😎. I'd love to get the Barbie and Ken Style set but I bet it's going to be uber-expensive. I really love the whole summery, Southern California vibe.

I really hope Barbie is coming back. As far as the Holiday Barbie's over the last few years I haven't bought any new ones cause I haven't felt they are worth the price. I'm hoping this year changes that. To me the Holiday Barbie's of the 90's and early 2000's are the best. I CANNOT wait to get the Barbie Extra Fly dolls! they are just so good! I hope you're right and they are bringing Barbie back to her Glittery Pink Glam roots!! Oh and I have the Vanessa doll, her hair is AMAZINGLY soft and has curls but no glue or gel in it. And the purple top Made to Move doll is an exact match for her. I don't like the bodies they are using on the budget Little Mermaid dolls.

I've gone back to collecting vintage 60s Barbies. They don't take up much space, plus it's fun giving them a makeover. Just won my first vintage doll on eBay for a good price. Plus, you can't beat the quality. The dress I'm going to put her in has a working zipper

I love the Ken and hope they make more! I kind of liked that the first resort doll had plain hair. When I was young, I wish they would make dolls with all sorts of colors in their hair, but so often it is poorly done - it needs more variation in color to look realistic. I wish they'd do more clip in hair pieces.
Maybe it's just me, but I think they do Ken wrong, putting him in casuals and shorts all the time. I know he's had careers, but I don't really remember any, and as a kid, he was always just a bum lol. I want more classy outfits for him. I guess in Malibu shorts with a blazer is done, but I'm in Tennessee, and that boy needs pants lol. He needs to be able to go on an interview, a business meeting, a formal date.
I have little interest in Disney, but love unusual "barbies", so Vanessa is on my wish list!

The outfits on the Fly Girls and Boy dolls are coordinated with good color choices, it looks to be beach concert theme that is really neat. The pink and white bathing suit and sarong is so nice and I thought with a different shade of reddish blond would bring variety but then the next few dolls had the rainbow color streaks so maybe Barbie with usual golden blond isnt too normal in appearance. For myself something i really like with doll clothes is hollographic prints that are sold with resin nail art kits. So features of stars, hearts, feathers, cresent moon, flowers, smiley faces in metallic foil over tulle mesh is good details. And fabric of cordorouy, denim, overalls, velvet is very classic of popular dolls throughout the decades.
