I'm review Toho's 1973 film Submersion Of Japan 1973 which it was directed by Shiro Moritani.
It was my favorite film of all time I gave this movie 5/5 rating for my own rating opinions.
The film was also known as in Japan as "Japan Sink" and in United States title as "Tidal Wave."
f you want to learn more about Submersion Of Japan 1973 movie from Toho go check out John LeMay's book "Terror Of The Lost Tokusatsu Films!"
This movie is based off novel by Sakyo Komatsu.
I hope one day in future that we might get North America Blu-Ray and DVD release for Submersion Of Japan to release North America home video with International dub even US version Tidal Wave I hope if Arrow Video could make it happen in future but time will tell as always.
    Development history.
Following an unsuccessful deal with Daiei, the film rights for Sakyo Komatsu's novel Japan Sinks were sold to Toho, and those rights extended to the production of a television series, which would be made alongside the film and shared some of the same cast as a result. Producer Tomoyuki Tanaka had been planning to turn the book into a film even before its publication.
There was supposed to follow up for sequel to Submersion Of Japan as title sequel called "Continuation: Submersion Of Japan" but it didn't happen as it was by 1976, the concept was still kicking and planned for a release that year. The idea was fleshed out a little more, as it was to be centered on the persecution of the millions of Japanese in America, Australia and Europe who had to escape after Japan's destruction.
Lamenting in preproduction, the project was still showing up as a planned release for 1978 when Toho issued their annual lineups. Sadly, this would be the final time Continuation: Submersion of Japan would get a proposed release before the concept was permanently shelved.
    Some trivia.
In 1972, Daiei president Masakazu Nagata announced a film adaptation of Komatsu's then-upcoming novel, at that time a raw manuscript, and titled it Submersion of the Japanese Archipelago. However, not only was there no prior notification to the staff at Daiei before the announcement, but the film rights had not been procured from Komatsu yet. The film never got past the planning stages, and the film rights were eventually sold to Toho.
On September 30th, 1998, Shochiku announced their own film adaptation of Japan Sinks, slated for a 1999 release and Kazuki Omori attached to direct. However, Shochiku was experiencing budget issues at the time, and by March 5th it was announced that all staff members involved with the project had been transferred and that production on it had been cancelled.
Today is December 29, 2024 it's to celebrate 51st anniversary for Submersion Of Japan 1973.
