Beginners Guide to Using a Charcoal Grill

  • Starting out on a charcoal grill can be a steep learning curve if you are starting from an easy to control gas grill. You have to master lighting charcoal, how to lay out your coals, and vent settings. That can be pretty intimidating for beginners starting out on their first cook on a weber kettle or other charcoal grill. Here is the ultimate beginners guide that will get you grilling on your new charcoal grill in no time.
    All of these should be available locally, but I've included links here in case they are helpful:

      I had a dad, but he never showed me how to grill (or much of anything, honestly), so I learned on my own. I'm the only one I know that actually puts effort in grilling/bbqing, rather than just throwing a piece of meat over some heat; usually with less than ideal results.

    Absolutely agree that the extra expense for an ash can catcher is worth the upgrade. Grill rake and oven mitts are also useful tools. Two more tips... if using foil, go heavy duty vs something super thin, and not all charcoal is the same. Try a few different brands, as some create a ton of ash, burn super quick, or give off different flavors. Happy bbqing!

    • @GrillTopExperience
      @GrillTopExperience  3 роки тому +1

      Heavy duty makes a big difference. Double wrapping the regular stuff isn't the same! I'd echo what you said about charcoal and add that they should stick to a brand for a bit. All of those differences can make it hard to get things dialed in when you are starting out. One of my favorites produces a ton of ash but has great flavor.

    • @GrillTopExperience

      That depends on what you'd like to use instead. You can light firestarters in a pile of charcoal to light them, but that can take a while. I have a video in this series that looks at some of the alternative methods: ua-cam.com/video/VF8FflA3ZVs/v-deo.html

    Why a chimney? Why not put charcoal and newspaper directly into the bbq? 🤔

    • @GrillTopExperience
      @GrillTopExperience  2 роки тому

      You get more airflow in a chimney and it will light faster. Lots of ways to light charcoal though.

      A charcoal chimney should be part of everyone's charcoal grill starter kit. It's well worth the $20.

      @@GrillTopExperience I have a SMALL GRILL - w/ no ADDED gadgets! My dad used to make some of the most delicious falling -off-the bone ribs and he didn’t have all that “added” stuff. I just remember seeing him putting newspaper under the coals, placing the coals in a slight pyramid, and pouring lighting fluid over it all and then wait 10-15 mins. 🌺 He would always clean & season the meat the night before. He would take the meat out of the refrigerator before set up the grill. Then he would fire up the grill til the ash, spread the coals around and place the meat on the grill meat side down first, I think, then bone side down later. We didn’t even have a cover at all for our grill. Those were THE BEST RIBS in the world. Oh well, I gotta gist of what to do anyway. I luv that charcoal taste. Will just cook my ribs slow for a while to get that taste then wrap in foil and put the cover on the grill to let them finish cooking slowly. Can’t go wrong with that. “Mahalo Nui loa” ( thank U very much) from Hawaii🌺🌴🦎💙🤍💙🤍💙🤍🤷🏻‍♂️🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🤙🤙🤙🤙

    After watching tons of videos I bought a charcoal bbq, bad idea, as my experience says these are the worst bbq given that without any wind they barely get up to 200 degrees F. Much better to use hybrid bbq that allows you to use charcoal on natural gas bbq.

      I don't intend to be mean, but if you can't get a charcoal grill over 200F, you are doing something wrong. You could have bad or old charcoal or need to burn more if it and let the fire get bigger before putting the lid on.

      I just bought a charcoal grill and assembled today. First run tonight, outside temperature is 32F. Internal is 400. You're definitely doing something wrong

    NEVER USE A WIRE BRUSH
    The wires can come off and end up in your food, I don’t think I need to explain what happens nect

      Everyone needs to establish their own risk tolerance. You can reduce that risk significantly by buying a better brush and replacing it more often.
