When I was younger, and before my conversion, I lived on a daily diet of dark and heavy music. Not only was I listening to it every chance I could, but I was playing it on my guitar.
And one of the things that was so appealing about it for a skinny and unassuming teenager like me, was that it was noisy and unambiguous, that it can get you a lot of attention the way being loud and obnoxious can get anyone attention. There’s no subtlety to it.
And not only does it have this impression of being attention getting, but it’s the right kind of attention which is that it makes you appear dangerous.
A song I used to like came on the radio recently and I hadn’t heard if for a long time, but after being removed from it from so long it gave me enough objective perspective that I thought it was just kind of laughable now. Heavy music like that is such an obvious attempt to look and sound scary or tough.
And what’s even more telling is that these dark and melancholic chord progressions that they use throughout their music, it’s not like they discovered them. People have known about these scales and modes as far back as Gregorian Chant, which is the foundation of Western music.
But while they knew about them, they used them sparingly because they recognized that that lack of subtlety was a cheap way to provoke a reaction out of your audience.
One of the bands I was really into near the end of my infatuation with this kind of music is a band called Opeth who’s Wikipedia bio describes their demonic vocal shifts - which is to say, it’s obvious what you’re going for here. You’re trying to sound evil and scary.
And I recently played a few seconds from one of their heaviest songs for my kids, aged 0-11 and their reaction was to laugh at it. They thought it was satirical because there’s no way someone could be seriously trying so hard to sound scary and tough and if they are, then it’s a pathetic exhibition of insecurity because anyone who tries that hard to sound intimidating is compensating.
And this is, I think a fitting description of what attracts people to Satanism or demonic preoccupations. Opeth, and groups like them are the soundtrack of Satanic culture. They get a thrill out of the scariness or the danger or to be seen as dangerous because of it.
They get a thrill out of mocking or thumbing their nose at God because doing, apparently, dangerous things and surviving is thrilling. That’s what thrill seeking is all about.
But that brings us to the first absurdity about Satanic tendencies. If mocking God makes you look or feel dangerous, it can only be because there’s an actual danger in doing so. It concedes, to some degree, that God actually exists because if he didn’t, there would be no reason to put so much effort into mocking him.
That’s the reason that nobody spends any time or energy blaspheming Thor or Odin. Because why would you if you were convinced that they don’t exist - which is what the Church of Satan claims about God. They claim to be atheistic.
But again, I’m an atheist as far as it concerns Odin, Thor, Krishna, or Moloch which is why I don’t spend any time thinking about them. I don’t use their names in vain, I don’t devote myself to dishonouring them or those who have a devotion to them. In short, I don’t fixate any attention on that which is not.
Because that would be a waste of my time and this attitude is a reflection of my lack of belief and concern for those deities. But Satanists, and atheists, are obsessed with, especially, Christian formulations of God.
And that brings us to a second absurdity in Satanism. It’s entirely derivative. It seems to me that one of the reasons something like Satanism is attractive to some people is because of how unique and original it makes them feel and appear, but the truth is, everything within it is contingent upon something else, namely the Catholic religion.
If Catholicism didn’t exist, then Satanism would not exist. It derives its identity from Catholicism. It’s a parasitic enterprise that needs to feed off of something that is truly original in order to borrow its rites, its symbols, even its use of the Latin language in order to sound like it’s grounded in something ancient and esoteric itself when in fact, it’s just plagiarism.
The Satanic Black Mass is derivative of the Catholic Mass, but designed to be a mockery of it which is interesting that such a thing is tolerated in modern society considering the one thing that we don’t like to tolerate any more is intolerance.

Satan is like a man who is obsessed with the ex he can no longer have, and then he recruits a bunch of people to join in on his ex-bashing, and they don't even know why.
yeah, but Jesus Christ said in a revelation (vision)... i don't remember well which saint it was, that if the devil repented for what he did, God would forgive him, but the sad thing is that he won't

@@introscapes9418 I’d say materialism is probably one of the bigger fundamental issues in Western culture today. It underlies the perverse morality of things like Marxism, Utilitarianism, consumerism, Neoliberalism, Modernism and Post-Modernism.
I think a reason that people in Western Societies attack Christianity is that to some degree it represented traditional authority within society rather than just amongst believers. In England the Church of England is the established church and sixty years ago the views of the Church of England would have been very much reflected in the law of the country. They partly abdicated from that position and partly were pushed out as the number of adherents fell. Similarly I suspect in the US despite the separation of Church and State the law would have been based on Christian Morality. To attack Christianity is to attack the establishment / traditional society to attack other faiths does not have the same effect.
I mean that and they happen to always have some kind disgusting shit going on(pedophiles they have)

Opeth are talented musicians. They arent really even the type of band to do all the try hard stuff like in most death metal and they fall into the prog subsect of the genre especially nowadays. Even the gutteral vocals are used like salt to add texture to the other aspects of the music, unlike most death metal where it really is just overused and generic

This video is very timely. I loved Opeth in high school . I had a moment in late college where I started noticing the crowd at all the concerts were 30 - 40 somethings trying to act 18. This makes me think of how woke-ism is just a poor and incomplete imitation of Christian virtues.
Which is an interpretation consistent with what we know about sin and the devil. Few sins, if any, are stand-alone; they are perversions. The devil knows he can't rival God's omnipotence, which is how he created all things, and resorts to warping what beautiful things God has already established into inferior, deracinated forms, after which he sells them off as new and superior.
The expressed mode of operation in Christianity is loving union in Christ and His body. Wokeness, however, is the antithesis; tribal division borne of hate.
I slightly disagree with metal being a major problem, it's normally just people expressing anger or skepticism and I think everyone has been there. If you really want to see satanism in action with real intent to harm look at pop music, modern films, and television shows, that movie cuties is a good example and some of these modern pop songs are 10 times more degenerate than black with which is normally hyperbole, keep in mind these songs are played everywhere.

It is like the "outlaw biker" look you see in some motorcyclists. They want to be feared, to be seen as dangerous. They want to be seen as nonconformists, although they conform to their own style (leather jackets, bandannas, facial hair, etc.).
I will have to note tho, a leather jacket while riding a motorcycle isn't really conforming to the stereotypical "outlaw biker" look, but more so for safety~ like I've seen people riding motorcycles in t-shirts and singlets, and the look of horror that it garners on people's faces including biker gangs is understandable. But other than that I agree with your point :)

I don't know about Canada, but in France it is not tolerated that satanists desecrate a church or the eucharist.
I have never met a single satanist adult, but I'm sure they must exist. Most satanist I've encountered were during my adolescence, and all of which left that movement as adults, and now laugh about it.
But I think satanism, when it's a fad for adolescents speaks to something else that a lot of us go through. It caters to a certain angst: of growing up, of truly realizing our mortality and that of those we love, of finding a sens of belonging... This sort of morbid fascination can also be found with vampires (though not the ones that sparkle in the sunlight).
Thus, I believe it's important to make a distinction between the adolescent "satanist", for whom this will just be a fad, to those who persue this belief as adults.
When I think of Satanism I always think of those edgy atheist groups in the states. They engage in a lot of political stuff like trying to get abortion covered as a religious right to circumvent prolife/anti-choice laws on a state level. I forget which one of them put a statue of Satan outside a government building that had xtian monuments to support separation of church and state, free artistic expression and/or whine about the existence of the Christian monuments there.
I'm all for birth control and abortion rights but I just find that kind of Satanist extremely cringey. Especially the trying to use religious mandates for birth control or other political issues when they are openly atheist. You could say religions can be non-theistic like some forms of Buddhism but I think a theistic belief separates a religion from other types of organizations and belief systems.
@@humanbean8590 I would tend to agree with most of what you have stated. Stating one has a religion - even satanist - to then invoque atheism to push a political or social agenda is just non-sensical.
I'm all for separation of state and religion, but find it utterly ridiculous and contradicting to put up the statue of a demon, or pagan "god" in order to promote this separation.
This type of satanist movement seems specific to the US and Canada, perhaps. In France at least, satanists desecrate graveyards and catholic churches, and, as horrible as it might be, it ends there mostly. They don't have a political agenda, and they don't demand rights. Mostly the satanists I've encountered in France, are young people with angst and it's their way of expressing it. Perhaps in the future, this will be another "joyous" importation France can look forward to...?
This was such a great video!
So this is my testimony about getting back into the church after 10 years of being out of it. For awhile I was an atheist and then an agnostic, however, God delivered me out of a difficult and strange period of my life that left me without doubt of His existence and goodness.
It's a bit of a long read, so bear with me.
A couple weeks into February of 2018 I experienced some dreams of a strange nature during a time where I was isolated, depressed, and desperate. I've dealt with anxiety and depression for along time and I was at the end of my rope. I had considered seriously commiting suicide two years ago and when the depression hit this time I couldn't take it anymore. I was searching desperately for something that would allow me to leave the situation I was in.
I was addicted to gaming and was very isolated. I also fell heavily into a series of books I was re-reading at the time that I had a great obsession with, The Dark Tower series by Stephen King.
A few months into a reread of this series I had a dreams in February 2018 one of which I think was prophetic, having to do with seeing a woman and man in the dream that I later saw the next day while walking and while watching TV. This was a man and woman that I hadn't met or seen before. There were also aspects of the dreams (which I can't easily get into because it's difficult to explain due to the content) that led me to believe that The Dark Tower series having to do with parallel universes was real.
I became convinced that there was a world parallel to ours, like the books, that I could gain access to if I used certain objects that I had in my possession . After weird events also began occuring in my home, with my television, and with me, I told my parents about all of it.
They were adamant that what I was experiencing was demonic deception and that I should cease reading these books and give myself over to God.
Being stubborn and delusional I decided to continue in what I thought was a great discovery and a way out of my situation.
Events transpired over the next few days that left me in a state of confusion and despair. My father also ended up in the hospital that week. It wasn't until I began to cry out to Jesus that things began to change. I began to hear from God during this time. I felt like I should rid myself of the books as well as the stuff I had gathered connected to them.
I eventually ended up getting rid of all the books and objects connected to them, as well as a lot of other stuff including my games. We were doing some work in my room at the time so luckily I had something to help keep my mind off what had been happening as well as grow in the word from listening to 107.9 on my radio.
When we finally returned to church a couple weeks later the sermon and series was about the book of Daniel, some of which has to do with prophetic dreams and visions among other things. I know now that this wasn't a coincidence.
Once I started getting involved in the church again and reading the Bible, I got baptised on my birthday. I found out that these things really aren't as uncommon or unbelievable as they seem. My mens bible study at the time had members that had experienced supernatural and amazing things as well.
Later on that year I witnessed other miracles first-hand within the young adult group I was in.
I know this isn't going to sound credible if you aren't a Christian. Back when I didn't believe, these stories didn't seem compelling or true to me. However I can tell you that if you reach out to God wholeheartedly he will reveal himself to you.
I'd like to ask that if you're going through something right now, some kind of challenge or difficulty that you reach out to God and ask him to help you. Sometimes it may not seem like anything is happening, but if you're willing to hold on and push through you can see him move in your situation in miraculous ways.

If any of you would like to receive or feel led to receive Jesus Christ as your saviour pray this and believe it with all your heart. ❤️ 🙏
Dear God, I know that I am a sinner and there is nothing that I can do to save myself. I confess my complete helplessness to forgive my own sin or to work my way to heaven. At this moment I trust Christ alone as the One who bore my sin when He died on the cross. I believe that He did all that will ever be necessary for me to stand in your holy presence. I thank you that Christ was raised from the dead as a guarantee of my own resurrection. As best as I can, I now transfer my trust to Him. I am grateful that He has promised to receive me despite my many sins and failures. Father, I take you at your word. I thank you that I can face death now that you are my Savior. Thank you for the assurance that you will walk with me through the deep valley. Thank you for hearing this prayer. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
Good luck and may God bless you! And remember satan is a spirit of fear, a lying demon, and a child abusing loser who is going to hell. He is referred to in the Bible as the spirit of the antichrist. He is also a false prophet who can never be trusted. He can pretend to be the Holy Spirit and try to trick you. He is a coward and a traitor. So look to God and not evil. Listen to God's voice and not the voice of the enemy.
Very inspiring, but the Bible and one's perceived personal relation to Jesus isn't enough. We need the Church Christ founded, it's sacraments, its authoritative teaching and correct interpretation of the Bible. This is to be found in Traditional Catholicism (as opposed to the visible church you see headed by Francis the Apostate). The Bible itself proves the teachings of the Catholic Church:

Always so pertinent. Thank you . God bless you.
Opeth explores a certain range of human emotions and often applies dark themes to build a certain atmosphere, but I think you're being very superficial to judge them and their listeners by this facade. In the end, the band members are musicians, artists, husbands, fathers, friends and human beings; certainly not satanists. I'd argue that examining the darker aspects of our nature through art makes us mature, not naive. It helps us develop tools to recognize and deal with negative emotions when they arise, rather than being taken by surprise and acting on instinct.
Agree. Opeth has genuine artistic merit and as far as I know they are simply atheists not Satanists. He could have used actual OTT Satanist bands as an example. The cringier the better. Deicide, Dissection etc. Could have made fun of Glen Benton's forehead inverted cross and genuinely silly Satanic bands and aesthetics that just fail. Don't use Ghost because they actually do a good job making the dark Pope aesthetic work.
@@humanbean8590 Nah. That would be too easy to pick an extreme. His argument is stronger because he focused on a group that has merit. That dram aesthetic is the caricature of the evil rebel, no matter how technically proficient the artist is.

I used to be really into Opeth. I wouldn't characterise them as satanic. A lot of the Scandinavian bands that were heavily into Satanism early on, moved on from that and became some sort of weird naturalists, neo paganists or atheists. I think there's more to metal than than Satanism. It also appears in beautiful music such as in Lizt and Berlioz. Extreme metal is more a sublimation of ugliness. In that sense it's really aesthetically rewarding.
What exactly appears in Liszt? Metal? Maybe contemporary classical foreshadowing but not a subjection to “ugliness.” Which I am glad that you admit yourself that that is what it is. “Sublimation of ugliness.” It sounds like you’ve watched videos on similarities between metal and classics. Anyone that knows music knows that Liszt never sublimated to ugliness.
@@sapereaude6339 I meant to say that the diabolic appears in beautiful music such as Liszt and Berlioz... Tartini. I didn't really care to make a connection between musical elements in classical and metal. Did I say that Liszt was sublimating to ugliness? You should have listened to the lyrics of the music instead of only focusing on the aesthetic. Much of the dark/heavy music coming out of the 70s and being commercialized in the 80s had lyrical content that dealt with the horrors of war, and that genre is a direct result of the impact that Vietnam had on young people who saw their older brother getting shipped off to what can be described as hell on earth.

I don’t use the upside-down cross, Satanism isn’t solely a Christian hate group, and is a very diverse community. Also, Christianity has essentially metaphorically took the place of the Roman Empire in the present day. The religion fundamentally causes problems that conflict with today’s society. This is why we have atheists, agnostics, Satanists, humanists, etc. Ever heard of The Satanic Panic during the 80s and 90s? The crusades? Other conflicts fueled by religion? Etc. Has religion caused more harm than good to man? Should philosophies take the place of religion?

Brian, would you please start uploading your content to LBRY? I would prefer to follow you there as opposed to UA-cam. Thank you and keep up the good work!
Wow! LBRY is still going? I was one of the first investors...

I got the same reaction from my kids when they heard me listening to Soul Fly. They couldn't understand why the singer was angry. I still like Soul Fly, but I find myself really uninterested in much of the music I once thought was so great. It's just too nihilistic and empty. Some of it, I admit, still has a great sound to me, but alas most of it just doesn't have the alluring sound and lyrics I once thought it did. Call it a maturity in faith, I guess. An odd twist of fate I didn't expect in my youth, but one I am now glad the Lord graced me with.
Like their song "back to the primitive" where they want to be tribesmen to avoid rules and mores and politics.
Primitive tribal life has even more rules than modern society!
What they want is to be preppers.
@@rosyclown when my kids started repeating the lyrics to "Boom" and having a laugh at how angry Max Cavalera sounded was the moment that gave me pause.
I'm a former Satanist, and a big metal fan. But ive come to Christ with the last 2 months. I started attending Liturgy, reading my Bible, and praying daily. I also got rid of my blasphemous shirts, and im losing interest in alot of metal (the stuff against God. But i still like stuff thats more creative).
Looking back, its so obvious to see how hollow and lacking Atheism, Satanism, and Paganism all are in theology. The story of Christ truly is the greatest story everytold. And its a story we can all be taking a part in everyday. Hopefully people like me can make this change in their lives as well.
I used to think the weak thing was to give in and become a Christian. Now I know weakness is rejecting his goodness and giving in to the easy pleasures of society.
Ice cream and sprinkles on top of bacon actually sounds great! Almost anything with bacon for that matter!
One of the very interesting things about Satanism is how many Satanists do not believe that Satan actually exists. As you have said, it is only a mockery of true religion, a lie passed off as truth, darkness passed off as light, foolishness passed off as wisdom. The irony is that Catholics have the true conception of Satan while Satanists have the false one. While God is "I AM", Satan is "I AM NOT", or at least would prefer his followers to so believe (this is why most "Satanists" are "atheists"). The reality is that if Satan exists, then God also exists (and created Satan), and if God exists then we ought to worship God rather than Satan. In the same way if sin exists, it only exists because righteousness exists. If lawlessness exists, it also owes its existence to divine Law. If evil exists, it is only as a result of good also existing. If rebeliousness exists, it implies the existence of legitimate authority. So it turns out that the existence of evil is counterintuitively one of the most compelling arguments for not only the existence of God, but also for His divine authority and legitimacy, as well as His mercy and love. If "might makes right", then we all ought to be obedient to God who is the Almighty.

Proverbs 1:7
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
Matthew 25:41
Then He will say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
John 8:44
You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out his desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, refusing to uphold the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, because he is a liar and the father of lies.
2 Corinthians 11:14
Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.
2 Peter 2:17-19
These men are springs without water and mists driven by a storm. Blackest darkness is reserved for them. With lofty but empty words, they appeal to the sensual passions of the flesh and entice those who are just escaping from others who live in error. They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves to depravity. For a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him.
1 John 3:8
The one who practices sin is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the very start. This is why the Son of God was revealed, to destroy the works of the devil.
James 2:19
Do you believe that there is only one God? Good! The demons also believe--and tremble with fear.
Revelation 20:10
Then the Devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had already been thrown; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.
All that being said however, our focus should be on the good, true, and beautiful, since the goal of evil and sin is to distract you from these things.
Philippians 4:8
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think on these things.
Proverbs 17:24
An intelligent person aims at wise action, but a fool starts off in many directions.
There ARE theistic Satanists that genuinely believe in and honor Satan as a God but they seem to be a lot less popular for whatever reason. I'd have more respect for Satanists if they actually believed in it and weren't just edgy atheists.
Everyone's should check out the interview Fr Dave Nix did with an ex satanic high wizard (now Catholic). It's riveting.
There is no such thing as a “satanic high wizard”.

Very good video greetings from Catholic Poland. Btw name of music ? ;)
I appreciate the food for thought, as usual. I have to catch you on a small matter, though. St. Laurence was actually already giving the wealth of the Church to the poor all along. We can see the practice as it's described in Acts. In Rome, they didn't yet own property as a Church, but Christians shared their resources in common. The rest of the account is accurate as you describe.
As always, 3 Hail Marys for you 🌹🌹🌹

What if god is the one who has truly deceived humanity? Hail Satan!
I agree the discussion of music and its effects on people, particularly teenagers, is an interesting and important conversion. I was never into Metal, but did enjoy goth bands like the Cure. It was theraputic for me and for many teens. I'm 47 now. I understand that moment of feeling silly listening to something you used to like. Where to draw the line for when music goes from being a theraputic release to being a harmful practice is a very good conversation to have. This video is fine; I think maybe if you choose a more popular style of music such as rap, especially gangsta rap, the converstation will indeed get quite interesting. I personally cannot stand gangsta rap, but my daughter likes it. We argue about it (intelligently, I hope) all the time.
I like Dave Matthews Band, too, but many of his songs are about smoking weed. Does that make me a hypocrite? That would be a great conversation to have. I do think that music can be an cathartic outlet...the Greeks knew this, too. Greek drama is all about the community living vicariously through the protagonist, the tragic hero. The community can experience what the hero experiences without actually being a hero. I can listen to DMB's song "Jimi Thing" and enjoy the relaxation of smoking weed without actually doing it. As an adult, I know the difference.
Two observations:
1) Not sure why you slip in a jab ( "and atheists") at 4:07. This video has nothing to do with atheists. I am a skeptical Catholic, heading towards lapsed. I have been reading all sorts of religious blogs and debates over the past 4 years, on every topic imaginable, and none of it is related to this topic of satanism. I don't have any particular objections to this video other than #2 below, but please don't conflate atheists and satanists.
2) A little after the 9:00 minute mark you bring in the Roman Empire. I think your analysis of the relationship between Christianity and the Roman empire is a bit simplistic. Recent scholarship by many, including Bart Ehrman and Candida Moss, has shown the persecution of Christians that you mention to have been sporadic and exaggerated. Rome largely left the Christians alone, as is shown in Ehrman's book "The Triumph of Christianity" and Candida Moss' book "The Myth of Persecution."
From Amazon:
*Moss, however, exposes that the “Age of Martyrs” is a fiction-there was no sustained 300-year-long effort by the Romans to persecute Christians. Instead, these stories were pious exaggerations; highly stylized rewritings of Jewish, Greek, and Roman noble death traditions; and even forgeries designed to marginalize heretics, inspire the faithful, and fund churches.*

So...This idea of constant horrendous persecution is a myth. The persecutions of Nero and Diocletian were, no doubt, particularly nasty. But Christians were not "relentlessly persecuted" at every opportunity as you stated, and the Romans had zero intentions of stamping out Christianity. The Romans actually did not care much about Christianity at all. They wanted good order, taxes to be paid, and the state gods to be honored. They allowed quite a bit of latitude in worship of any other gods. So I think it is important to get accurate historical context here.
As for the 4th Century, the Church "prevailed" against the Roman Empire by adopting the structures of the Roman Empire, obtaining Imperial tax exemptions, and installing Bishops who functioned essentially as Roman magistrates. This is an incredibly complicated topic, but the 4th Century essentially saw the uneasy merger of Church and State and laid the groundwork for the divine right of kings. The Church acquired vast amounts of wealth during this period. Bishops fought each other tooth and nail over the proper understanding of the Trinity. Those accepting the "proper" understanding of the Trinity (the interpretation favored by the emperor) saw themselves with greater power, prestige and access to imperial wealth, society and power. The losers, branded heretics, lost their Churches and many were exiled. It was an ugly business.
The 4th century was when the "institutional church" was born, and all the problems with clericalism began. Really and truly, the sex abuse scandal (and many other abuses) can be traced all the way back to the 4th century. I think many conservatives would actually agree.
Please check out "The Closing of the Western Mind" by Charles Freeman for a very detailed examination of Church history during the first four centuries.
The reason he conflates atheists and Satanists is not to be closeminded and imply they are one in the same, as far as I can tell. It's because all the most well known Satanist groups and figures in the world are actually atheist groups. They believe in Satan as a symbol of rebellion but not as a genuine thing. Anton Lavey for example and his church were all atheist. There is such thing as a theistic Satanist but it's much rarer. I don't know how any orgs with any type of scale while more popular atheistic ones are involved in political protests and stuff so there's enough of them to do that.

I was a Traditional Satanist for about 7.5 years. Traditional Satanism differs a bit from the Modern you were speaking on. However,There were some key points you made that were right on the money. A lot of Satanism is a hodgepodge of many different belief systems showcasing either Satan as the Ultimate deity or “ One’s Self” as it’s own God. There was a lot of Power in the faith (I believed it to be ) providing a very seductive atmosphere that completely fell apart after a few anomalies that happened to me.
I think you don’t actually understand satanism you should do more research into it before making a video on it.
If satanism was what you were describing it as then yeah it would be ludicrous
I really liked the word "bad- assery"
I'm going to have to wholeheartedly disagree about Opeth. I'm biassed, of course, because they've been one of my favorite bands since I was in middle school but I've never thought of them as a chiefly Satanic band, and as far as metal bands go, they've never tried to sound heavy and dark for their own sake. You may think Michael's Cookie Monster vocals sounded silly, but that doesn't mean there isn't beauty in what Opeth was doing. Unlike a lot of metal, Opeth mixes really dark sections with clean melodic parts, and in my opinion, the darkness only makes the beauty shine more. You can't listen to a song like The Moor, and think that they're going for "dark and scary," and nothing more. Even a song like Demon of the Fall, which starts of really dark and brutal, has one of the most memorable, emotional (musically) endings of any song I can think of. I can think of a few black metal bands that live up to your characterization, but not Opeth.
I totally agree. It'd be much better to go for genuinely Satanic bands like Dissection and analyse and counter it and the cringiest among them like the guy from Deicide who branded an inverted cross on his forehead.
I still like a lot of that music.
What kind of music do you listen to now and what are your thoughts on Christian metal?
This was very good. If you haven’t already you should read Gilson’s essay on atheism. You’ll resonate a lot with it.
What is this music in the opening of his videos??

I LOVE ❤️ how I feel when I’m in a cathedral
I do have to chime in say I enjoy some of hard rock and if you listen to the words, most of these singers are not singing about the Devil, example Black Sabbath War Pigs, a song about oppressive Government, brainwashing young minds, Government control over their people, Metallica, One, song about the horror of being a Soldier and coming home broken from the war, limbs gone, the mind tainted from War, Disturbed Sound of Silence, these songs are POWERFUL reminders of how a society can become easily swayed, and eventually oppressed by their Governments.
I’m a huge Ghost fan. I have some of their merchandise. But I don’t devote my life to them like some of their fans do that I see on Facebook groups. I still attend church every Sunday, partake in the sacrament, and have Heavenly Father in my life. It’s all a choice. I listen to Ghost for the entertainment. Ghost doesn’t focus on Satanism other than the “look.” They enjoy parodying the Catholic Church because of how the creator was raised in it. They don’t promote violence or anything scary.
I think Opeth is more so mythical nonsense and poetic nonsense than it is satanic (maybe besides orchid) the lyricist Mikael Akerfeldt says he is an atheist and orchid is supposed to be occultish, but he mostly just came up with lyrical nonsense that sounded mystic or poetic to him at the time
its besides the point. I do agree with the video :)
true counter culture or rebellion is Christianity and always will be
You put it well. I still listen to heavy metal but I'm far more selective about what bands I still keep around. Opeth is not one of them. Very talented musicians, and mopey as all hell. I used to play in death metal bands, and I realized that most of the people in the scene were adults who refused to grow up. I also really can't stand most vocalists anymore. There's no singing. Also being edgy and satanic is so 30 years ago.
