Great posting, Matthew. Once I saw that 1928 Buescher bass, I was hooked. I have a 1916 ex-US military Buescher nickel silver bari that had somehow made its way to Scotland, where I come from, and was pleased to see and hear its white metal big brother. For seven years I have had a Chinese copy of a 1929/30 Buescher/Conn, with the extra high keys, cost £2,200! It has the same imperfections as the older models, especially the tricky middle D and E notes, easily accessed by side-keys, although proficiency with the basic fingering does come with practice - all in the reed and chops, I think. It's a fun horn but you have to lip around a few notes, hearing them in your head first, as you will know well. There are plenty of moaners out there who just need to experiment more. Thank you for this!
Your intonation in the upper register is to die for. I own a 1922 Conn bass, and while I absolutely love it, the tuning completely detaches from reality towards the top at high D/Eb. Takes a LOT of practicing and embouchure gymnastics to bring some control over it. These old basses are magnificent beasties, even though they are curmudgeons. It always amazes me how much power and resonance mine naturally has compared to my bari sax, even though I use a relatively conservative mouthpiece/reed combo.
Excellent video! Your breadth of knowledge and ability to demonstrate the instrument and your personality make the perfect combination. Thank you for posting and sharing yourself with the world. All the very best to you. (I’m a former classical sax player who loves living vicariously through all of you who stayed on the track.)
Nice video, thanks for it. To add to your history lesson, Charlie Ventura played Bass Saxophone quite beautifully, and Boyd Raeburn played Bass Saxophone in his bop-oriented big band on occasion, though only in the section, not as a soloist.
Man I wanna play one again. I know a guy who has one, but haven't seen him in a while. That low Bb is the biggest booming sound I've heard. Such a great sound.
I'd like to add that the bass sax is being used in very different ways in the band Moon Hooch. my favorite piece using the bass sax is Nonphysical by moon hooch.
What a joy for me to find this video! There is such limited information on the bass. I have a Saxophone Journal issue exclusively on the bass saxophone. I would love a video comparing vintage basses to modern basses. And thanks for the shout out to Adrian Rolling.
Why is your nice and very informative video mirrored? Your "Buescher" resembles my "Oscar Adler", a German made from the same period. It would have been great if you had shown the fingering for the very high notes (e and f ).
If memory serves, Jared de Leon reviewed a 4000 USD Chinese model on his channel that he said was pretty good. Might be worth asking him about that Edit: my mistake. It's a German brand named Thomann, and it's about 3000 USD (the lacquered investment he reviewed was $2800, but that's currently out of stock. The silver-plated version, which is currently in stock, costs an extra $400)
This video is dope AF. I am a bass guitarist, but I love all bass instruments. Bass sax is awesome.
I have the same opinion
Same
i agree
What’s “dope AF”?
@@allendeanpalmer6464It basically means cool but literally it means “dope as fuck”
This thing sounds insanely cool. I had no idea that something like this even existed. Thanks for sharing!
Really great tone in that second octave and a half; wow! Such a hard part of the horn to get clean. Those Bueschers are the way to go!

Wow, thank you so very much! I wish I had more time with this lovely horn......I think I'll ask my friend to borrow this horn again in the Summer

Informative. Thanks.

Awesome video! … What a lovely instrument!
Great informative video. Hopefully the instrument makes a big comeback all around.
This is a great video. Very congruent info with what I've studied. Thank you for doing your homework.
Love the history of the instrument.
Thank you for the education!
Thank You for this backwards and forwards looking rap with this glorious instrument!
Beautiful vibrato you got on that Ellington tune.
That is one nice-sounded bass!

Nice vid on the bass sax...thank you!
Holy shit, how has this channel not gotten super popular yet? Super informative video, and great playing. Keep up the good work man!
This is cool, teaches me more than what the school would (not my band director, he does well at teaching)
Very cool!
What a Beauty ! ( You BOTH i mean - of course
I love the bass sax now I think I want to buy one now lol. I subbed good work

When you played middle D and Eb with the palm keys, it almost sounded like a baritone. Very interesting
Thank you sir! When I get the horn back again I'll do some more experiments with mouthpieces and reeds!
Great stuff, thanks!
Holy shit I really want a bass sax now😂😂😂
Great sound Mathew! Gotta get me a bass.
god i wish i could play one of these. more than that i wish i could play an eppelshiem
Nice tone.
And an F mezzo-soprano saxophone, plus a C soprano saxophone.
Hey, I might have the money for those one day lol

Wow, I just figured it was a left-handed saxophone.…
Please let me strap on this cool base saxophone so I can blow out lots of cool low notes and make those cool reed sounds.
I see that bass clarinet
Look closely, it's ever so slightly larger 😉
is the bass saxophones lowest note Bb or A?
Bb, with the exception of the Eppelsheim bass sax and a few Keilwerth models
underrated instrument, a bit to big for me though.
What mouthpiece are you using on that?
Interesting…
Why are the hands switched on this bass sax?
The video is mirrored so it looks like they are flipped
Where could one get a bass saxophone for not a bankruptcy price?
You can get a pretty cheap Chinese model easily, but I would not recommend that course unless you are just desperate to have bass sax in your life

German brand, but made in China.
😄👍👍
