My name is Matt. I play weird wind instruments in classical music and jazz. Sometimes I do it well! Come for alto clarinet, french bassoon, and occasional rambling
A Flower is A Lovesome Thing | Matthew Banks Quartet
Billy Strayhorn's music moves me in a deep, complicated, and beautiful way. I adore every one of his standards I have the privilege of performing, and am thankful I captured this moment. It was about 12:15 or 12:30 on a Thursday night at The Balcony Club in Dallas. The Quartet had played for three hours, we were tired, and nearing the end of our show as the club was slowly emptying out. I called this number "A Flower is A Lovesome Thing", on a whim: as a quartet we had never played it before. I believe we created some beautiful moments spontaneously that....early morning, and hope you enjoy this recording too!

I'm trying new things and new ensembles all the time, and I'm loving this new quintet I've been gigging with! This is basically a stringband, with myself, Violin, mandolin, guitar and bass. It gives me freedom to try out my favorite 20s and 30s jazz tunes, and this cool number, "East Tennessee Blues"! please tell me what you think! the band: Matthew Banks (me!): Full Boehm Clarinet Marijn Meyer...
Matt Solos over "There is No Greater Love"

Improvising never stops being a gamble. Sometimes it pays off and you play something truly inspired. Often one checks out and plays old riffs they memorized decades ago. Here I'm working over the tune "There is No Greater Love", trying to accomplish the Former. I'm playing my beautiful Royal Global MAX Bass Clarinet, and superbly accompanied by Travis Udall on Bass and Joshua Ferrell on drums. ...

Did you know that I'm also an arranger? I used to do it way more, especially in college, but I've always loved doing it and hope to do so more. Here's one of almost two dozen ragtime arrangements I did for Scott Joplin's birthday back in 2020. The tune is called "Bethena," and it's my very favorite of Joplin's compositions, endlessly beautiful. I hope you enjoy this arrangement I made, bear in ...

Here's another live "aircheck" from a lovely gig I played at Pinky's Champagne Room and Velvet Jazz Lounge on September 1st. All of Me (Introducing the C Clarinet!!!)

Hey! I know I posted a version of this tune a couple of weeks back, but this is another edition I played in a very unique setting on a wonderful, unusual horn. This is the performing debut of my C Clarinet! Yes, they make clarinets in C (I'm doing some research for a potential history video later), and this wonderful little guy is a Marigaux that seems to be 60 or 70 years old. This edition is ...
Matt plays "All of Me" LIVE at Pinky's Champaigne and Jazz!

Hey! Here's a tune hot off the press. Last night I played at a newer venue in Fort Worth called "Pinky's Champaigne and Jazz" in Fort Worth, Tx, with an odd trio: Clarinet, Piano, and Drums. This format allowed us to play my favorite older jazz tunes with a more authentic feel, acentuated by me using my Albert System Clarinet. This is the first tune we played that night, and the first tune all ...
Matt plays Eddie Barbash's solo on "Gumshu"
Переглядів 256Рік тому
I've loved Eddie Barbash's tone, style, and incredible improvisational creativity for quite some time. So I decided to challenge myself and learn Eddie's phenomenal solo on Cory Wong's "Gumshu". I also did it on my Albert system Clarinet. because I need to practice it more. This transcription and performance are not perfect, but I feel fairly good about my performance and capturing Eddie's nuan...
Autumn in New York (Bass Clarinet and Mandolin Duet)
Переглядів 443Рік тому
last Wednesday, I had the privilege of playing a very stripped-down gig with my friend, the mandolinist Max Robertson. The duet of mandolin and bass clarinet is anything but conventional, so I decided to record a bit of it to see how we turned out. Nothing was rehearsed beforehand, and only knew the tune we were going to play a few seconds before hand. This is our version of "Autumn in New York...

Awesome! 🤯

@@MatthewBanks100 Wow, I figured you were going to say one of the big 3, since it looks like it! Silver-plated keywork?
@organist1982 yessir! Silver plated, to low C, all the bells and whistles
@@MatthewBanks100 Nice!!
Looking and sounding great!
Thank you so much!
Just lovely!! Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Really cool! And, by the way, you look awesome with your shaved head! 🤩
Well thank you on both counts haha
👍
Great stuff.
Hello , I'm currently learning the bass clarinet, but thinking to switch to the alto clarinet, people say the alto is not as popular and harder to play , but you play beautifully, what would your advice be ?
@rosemaryquaye6479 hello! The alto isn't hard to play as long as you have: 1. A good instrument (if you're at a school, make sure it has been looked over by a GOOD repair tech who will not half-repair the horn) 2. A good mouthpiece (the cheapest good one IMO is the David Hite, all Vandoren alto mouthpieces are good) 3. Good reeds (probably the same strength as the reeds you play on bass, or a half strength softer than you do on soprano) With these three factors met, it is no challenge to make the alto clarinet sound as any clarinet does....but it my experience point 1 is the very hardest. Especially if you are a student or don't have unlimited resources
@MatthewBanks100 hahah no I'm not a student, far from it , I'm all grown 😅 I'm a professional saxophonist, tenor but mainly baritone saxophones, I'm hiring a bass clarinet from a music shop , but before i take the plunge wanted to be sure , the alto clarinet caught my eye , as I don't play soprano or alto saxs anymore I thought the alto may be a nice contrast, however I've been told that modern alto clarinets haven't been updated for years and are clunky , I was thinking of a buffet or yamaha, possibly selmer , I kinda feel sorry for the poor alto , he's been getting a bad rep on the Facebook pages , still can't decide on BCL or alto clarinet, what would you If you were me ? 🤔
@rosemaryquaye6479 regarding altos, the Yamaha and Buffet have received extensive updates and revisions over the last couple of decades. I think alto might fit for you just fine, it has some "analogous" finger language to tenor sax in my opinion. Take the plunge!
@MatthewBanks100 thank you for your time and advice , appreciate it, I may just do that 💥🙌🏿
Hi there! I understand its been 3 years since this has been posted, but im acquiring a noblet alto clarinet with a non tunable neck such as your Buffett, how would I go about tuning it, thank you IA! :)
@jason89761 hey, welcome to the club! In the short term, you can pull it out like you would a normal clarinet barrel, BUT, I recommend in the strongest possible terms the purchase of this neck: jdwoodwind.com/shop/p/noblet-fit-alto-clarinet-neck
@MatthewBanks100 fast response, I seriously appreciate that, man! Thank you for your advice, love watching your content, criminally underrated channel :)
👍
Thank you!
i dig this.. very cool
Thank you so much!
I adore this. Maybe it'll convince my sax playing wife to try a duet!! You guys sound amazing.
Sounds beautiful
Every note sounds like a throat tone on alto 😭
@@michaelshaffield642 very helpful comment, thanks haha
❤
Would you recommend an Alto Clarinet thats missing the low e flat key? its like a 1950-1960 bundy model
No, not really. On low clarinets, the low Eb key, in addition to extending the range, adds a vent to the length of the instrument that stabilizes Clarion B and C. In my opinion, for this alone, low Eb is a must
Alright thank you!@@MatthewBanks100
@@MatthewBanks100 Is gilliotti a good brand? I found one with low eb made out of wood but has some verdigris on some of the keys and near paddings
@@MatthewBanks100 Just bought a selmer alto clarinet with flow e flat, i cant get out low B, and keep squeeking. its open holed so covering the holes is prob likely but any tips?
@@nzukowastaken5755 open-holed? Have you had a repaid tech service it?
Was that really one breath? WOW!
Yes indeed! I found it easier to focus and follow the conductor if I wasn't worried about squeezing in a second breath haha
Great alto playing
Thank you so very much!
Matthew… I did not expect to find your channel while just looking for Alto Clarinet stuff… but I did, and I’m glad.
This thing sounds insanely cool. I had no idea that something like this even existed. Thanks for sharing!
MY FAVORITE HORN PLAYER OF ALL TIME! Take a bow my friend! 🙏🙏 miss you!
Bass clarinet is so soft but strong sounding 🤌
Nice solo. Glad you are playing more jazz now. Jazz is where it's at.
👍🏾
I FOUND YOU
For, context this is a tune roughly called "Sweet Jazz Music" that Jelly Roll Morton improvised for the library of congress recordings. It's delightful, but somewhat obscure: I've found exactly two recordings of it: one live video by Jon Batiste and Stay human, and one recording of Stay Human doing the tune, posted on Eddie Barbash's UA-cam channel. I intend to contribute to this small library soon!
Very cool.
Thank you very much!
Ooooh it indeed is sweet good sir!!!❤❤❤
Thank you very kindly!
Informative. Thanks.
I appreciate this video and watched it a couple times. The Alto I bought included a B40. I have been using a Hite for years on Bb Clarinet, and ordered a Hite for the Alto as well. Looking forward to trying it. Many Clarinetists don't seem to know about or be willing to try a Hite. I think the newer Hites are not as good as the vintage ones, because a friend of mine gave me a Hite that he had ordered recently, because he didn't like it. My Hite, I bought in the mid-90's. It is a Model D. I like your sound on the Hite. I think there is something about it that makes it better suited for Sax doublers, like me. I think you sound better on the Vandorens though. The Pomarico is quite interesting.
You sound amazing. I just got an Alto Clarinet. The middle range, just past the break, seems to be very tempermental. I need to tread lightly or else I get an overtone. Is this normal or do I just need go practice more, or might it have a leak? The low register is fine.
No. Get the instrument overhauled asap. If its a plastic Bundy or Yamaha it might not be worth that action
@@MatthewBanks100 thanks for the quick reply. It's s a Selmer. And actually it seems to be getting a little easier. I literally just started blowing on it yesterday. I did buy it on eBay, from a musician who plays sax and clarinet, in France. It is a Selmer Model 22. 🙂 I will take it to a shop though to have it looked over.
I think it's cuz I am primarily a sax player and I need to make sure I am focusing my air correctly. You probably aren't wrong about it needing a look from a tech. 😁
@@brekedekdang39 okay, that tracks. You need to work on increasing your airspeed considerably to play any clarinet. This is the challenge saxophonists generally have with our instrument
Is this your original blues? Nice playing!
The biggest gripe I have about the Alto is how clacky it is. I will need to learn to glue cork and felt so I can fix mine up.
I mean, a Bass in bad nick is just as clicky as an Alto in bad nick. Only difference is, people always seem to fix their Basses first 😡
Awesome!
My biggest mistake here was not immediately acknowledging the incredible composer of this piece, Tony Rodriguez. I still feel really bad about that moment, and hope to do better if I ever premiere a piece again
This is a perfect instrument for this song. There's not a whole lot of bass crooners out there, but the reach of this song really takes advantage of the bass' range of tone, from the crooning mid tones to the wonderful floor-shaking notes on the bell.
I enjoyed the waltz. 😊
Amazing Eb clarinet chops man!
Your intonation in the upper register is to die for. I own a 1922 Conn bass, and while I absolutely love it, the tuning completely detaches from reality towards the top at high D/Eb. Takes a LOT of practicing and embouchure gymnastics to bring some control over it. These old basses are magnificent beasties, even though they are curmudgeons. It always amazes me how much power and resonance mine naturally has compared to my bari sax, even though I use a relatively conservative mouthpiece/reed combo.
Wow, thank you so very much! I wish I had more time with this lovely horn......I think I'll ask my friend to borrow this horn again in the Summer
A suitable accompaniment for a stage conjurer and his or her besequinned glamorous assistant.
Yeah, man!!!
yass!!! one of my favorite instruments and pieces
I love that
Thank you so much!!!!!
Sounds great!
