"God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him. How shall we, murderers of all murderers, console ourselves? That which was the holiest and mightiest of all that the world has yet possessed has bled to death under our knives. Who will wipe this blood off us? With what water could we purify ourselves? What festivals of atonement, what sacred games shall we need to invent? Is not the greatness of this deed too great for us? Must we not ourselves become gods simply to be worthy of it? There has never been a greater deed; and whosoever shall be born after us - for the sake of this deed he shall be part of a higher history than all history hitherto." -Friedrich Nietzsche
oh my God you actually got me. thank you comment section for saving me I was seriously about to be very sad for a long time Penn jillette is one of our greats we can't lose him over to nonsense
Help them in the Middle East. That's the best way to both help them and to avoid the issues arising from mass importation of a culture which is largely antithetical to Western culture.
Modern day Christianity and modern day Islam don't even compare in terms of the horrible things that they believe and do. And yes, you can hate people for their beliefs (depending on how you define hate). If people believe things that are horrible, it makes them less good as people.
Thank you. Beautifully articulate as always Penn, though the opening gave me a small heart attack. Your point is well made & one I think too many people, atheist or not forget.
Penn was on the NPR show Fresh Air a few years ago. I think he was talking about his book. His mother was a devout Christian and he had a generally good experience among Christians. He's one of the few public atheists that doesn't go far out of his way EVERY single chance to caricature Christians to try to get points from other atheists.
Terrorism isn't even the biggest concern, so to go on and on about it is pointless. The main problem is how Muslims change the societies in which they move. The loving and compassionate people in Western civilization are happy to give up the important things that make it great, and that is unacceptable to me.
Dylan Boyd The black slave trade died in America in the 1863. An Islamic "slave" ruled over Muslim lands. Show me where a slave ruled over America, even once. Islamic "slavery" is nothing like the animalistic slavery of the West.
Evo Fraction Wow have you heard of the Janissaries. Are you saying slavery is good one way but not the other. Have you heard of Serfdom almost exactly the same as slavery. Your missing the point btw slavery happened every where it wasn't just a western thing to try and say it was only western culture that did bad slavery, cause there's a good kind according to you.
Wow, I must say you had me a bit scared at the very beginning! lol But in the end I felt this was a great message and very heartfelt! It even made me stop and do some self reflecting. Good for you Penn! I will definitely share this.
This video has reminded me why I have such respect for Penn. Reaching out to the people behind the faces of their faith is critical. The only way we are going to be able to live and flourish in a multicultural/multi-faith world is to focus on commonality.
7:03 "The chances of a terrorist believing in Islam are pretty good. The chances of someone believing in Island of being a terrorist are very very bad, very little chance of that." He makes a very good point there.
Thank you, Penn. I've been saying this since October of 2001. We are who we are because we are the people who put compassion and welcoming ahead of bigotry. It's been that way since the beginning of the USA.
Sorry, I have to disagree with you on your evaluation of people as good overall. Most people aren't good or bad. They are "sheep" (for lack of a better word) that don't think for themselves and take the path of least resistance.
He just meant "good" in the sense that they hold to our society's behavioral norms and aren't planning to attack you. That there's no reason to fear any such individual compared to any other stranger.
No, he means good. As in, they don't want war, they're genuinely empathetic, and don't want to hurt anyone. You know, a good person? Unless you're a sociopath, this should be common sense. That, or you're incapable of comprehending sonder, so you massively over simplify your worldview.
same sentiments as mine. different words. except that I don't believe that humans generally possess a strong natural empathy. some do. I think it's rare. but putting that aside, whatever we can expect from a white or European person, we can expect from any other.
Mr. Jillette, that was a strange and also wonderful video. I appreciate your willingness to be vulnerable and to acknowledge the complexity of our country's moral challenges. Thank you for saying it passionately that atheists must follow the higher path of compassionately loving people, especially muslims (who are so easily scapegoated). As an atheist myself, I wish that more atheists would talk freely and openly about the counter-productive (and boring) strategy of "shouting loudly that God is dead." Why are so many public atheists arrogant one-note canaries? Why are so few actively modeling the really difficult (and truly admirable) character traits of compassion, humility, loving-kindness, justice and moral imagination? We so need these virtues as individuals and as a community.
I think it's important to point out that someone told him their community would kill them and he's saying that saying anything against those people is wrong.
as a person raised with the fear of an eternal hell aka Islam, I feel u talking to me here Penn. Respect. I'm a man in the dark looking for the light of souls that will accept me as I accept them.
He says he can be respectful towards christians, but does the opposite with the intro of this video. Hypocrisy is a surefire way to ensure no one takes you seriously. So I'll just extrapolate that to all of his conclusions until he gets his shit together.
Jack Culhane I'm dealing by replying to you. Mockery: teasing and contemptuous language or behavior directed at a particular person or thing. Being contemptuous of someone or something means that you're combining a deep dislike for them with condescension. It was a joke.
Drhumbolt I don't run around yelling at people for not finding my jokes funny, and then yell at the other half of my audience that's upset that its their own fault they are angry. It's not my fault he needs better jokes.
Bobby Newmark You realize that ideologies evolve and change right? Christian don't stone people to death anymore, they wear mixed fabric and they get tattoos. Many cultures and belief evolve with time. They don't evolve by isolating them or by going to war with the people who hold those belief but actually challenge the belief it's self. Best evidence for this is history. (The renaissance era.)
To point out just one of the many disagreements I have with what he's said here, though to be fair there are some points of agreement, the difference between the Irish, Polish, and Africans is that they were disregarded base on where they came from, mulsims are disregarded because of what they choose to believe. There's a very significant difference of choice and agency that cannot be discarded.
The biggest problem in this life that if you want to believe that there is no God you will find persuasive evidences and if you believe there is God you will also find strong evidences , the conclusion is you can create your own reality in your own life by having a point view and belief system, all in all our knowledge is always way smaller than the actual universe.
Never been to America, but love it; think it's the greatest society in the world, because of people like Penn Jillette. But I think he's wrong in this case, and wrong about President Elect Donald Trump: help the refugees, but help them to remain in safe zones in thier own countries. Some who have been fully vetted could be resettled; but an uncontrolled influx is asking for trouble.
We can not prove whether there is a god or not it, but it is obvious and requires no new evidence that no one listens to the prayers of believers, but themselves.
If at first it doesn't' stick, then repeat until it does... Yes its an important message. But why does this channel think that by reposting videos its going to be more popular?
I believe it is far more likely for a group of Christians express the love that Penn is talking about than a group of atheists. ...probably just hit a hornets nest with that comment.
Being a good person is relative and highly subjective to the person judging. 7 billion good people, yeah i say maybe 7 million. Farting numbers out my butt
When Mr. Jillette meets his maker, and make no mistake, that day will come (weather he's an atheist or not,) I wonder what the Lord will think of the "magician" when he tries to dissappear, or pull a rabbit out of his hat, to try to trick himself out of judgment...lol 💫🌟
And yet not one religion has came forward and proved to us that their God exists. So tell me my friend imagine Zeus is real... Will you shit your pants?
If I met that guy I would tell him here's my number. Even if we don't manage to become good friends, even if for some reason we go our own ways, if you ever are in need call me. Because there are people there for you. That story made me very sad to live in the country I do :(
1:16 "But what good if a man gains the whole world but loses his soul?" 5:18 "You're allowed to hate ideas. You're not allowed to hate people for their ideas."
"There is no God. So we have to do Gods work. Because he wont. " Love it
Novaverse That quote hit me as soon as he said it, that was amazing.
Novaverse Atheist new slogan? sounds awesome,I might quote this a lot 😆😆😆😆
Novaverse kill babies and burn witches?
One problem, there is a God :) And you are doing His work.
"God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him. How shall we, murderers of all murderers, console ourselves? That which was the holiest and mightiest of all that the world has yet possessed has bled to death under our knives. Who will wipe this blood off us? With what water could we purify ourselves? -Friedrich Nietzsche
"We have to do God's work because God's not going to." Best line.
lmao that prank intro 😂😂😂
not gonna lie, he actually got me for a second there
i gotta admit, he got me going for a second .
oh my God you actually got me. thank you comment section for saving me I was seriously about to be very sad for a long time Penn jillette is one of our greats we can't lose him over to nonsense
"no such thing as god so we have to do god's work".
RequiemFor America *communism.
Robert's Art Studio
yep. And he makes sense and he is right
>Communism
>Penn is Libertarian and that is the exact opposite of Communism
Yup sure thing, buddy
Communism isn't the answer.
Joseph Wilson
it's the opposite of war, greed and "winner takes all" mentality. You cant let that in a capitalist society!
I'm surprised he actually kept a straight face through the first part of the video.
Thanks BigThink, it's good to revisit these exceptional segments.
"And I realised there's nobody for me." So true words. I started crying...
@Someone wait what?
Thanks for this message man!
Help them in the Middle East. That's the best way to both help them and to avoid the issues arising from mass importation of a culture which is largely antithetical to Western culture.
Mark Evans help them by bombing their cities and people.
Are u still mentally ill
Modern day Christianity and modern day Islam don't even compare in terms of the horrible things that they believe and do. And yes, you can hate people for their beliefs (depending on how you define hate). If people believe things that are horrible, it makes them less good as people.
A lot of great points. Thank you!
Thanks a lot you killed my buzz with that opening
Give this man an oscar cause he was masterful in his acting.
Thank you. Beautifully articulate as always Penn, though the opening gave me a small heart attack. Your point is well made & one I think too many people, atheist or not forget.
I knew that it was coming as soon as he said he was a Christian! Love you, Penn!
Great talk, very well put. Scared me good in the opening too. :P
0.50...you had me going there Penn LOL
To link to a certain time in the video, you have to use a colon, no a dot or decimal point.
Like this 0:50.
I think we would have noticed that hell (which doesn't exist) had frozen over and pigs (which do exist) could fly.
I ALMOST commented "RIP" and clicked off the video, that was close!
Powerful from the beginning to the end. Thanks Penn. You sent a chill down my spine with that opening.
Oh, my word, I laughed so hard at the intro. Priceless.
Terrorism isn't even the biggest concern, so to go on and on about it is pointless.
The main problem is how Muslims change the societies in which they move. The loving and compassionate people in Western civilization are happy to give up the important things that make it great, and that is unacceptable to me.
gantmj forgot about slavery? Bravo.
Evo Fraction
The slavery of whom?
Evo Fraction Muslims had Slaves as well and they had slaves longer than all western countries.
Dylan Boyd The black slave trade died in America in the 1863.
An Islamic "slave" ruled over Muslim lands. Show me where a slave ruled over America, even once.
Islamic "slavery" is nothing like the animalistic slavery of the West.

But in the end I felt this was a great message and very heartfelt! It even made me stop and do some self reflecting.
Good for you Penn! I will definitely share this.
You really had me. I was about to turn this off. "Im a Christian now " damn. He really got me
Oh shit I believed the mad man thank goodness he didn't go mad
Fantastic!
O Ooooooooo my Universe!! .. My heart! I fucking fell for it... Pheewwwwww....
Is this a re-upload? I am certain I have seen this before.
For a moment I thought this guy was crazy, even after he admitted to joking, but this video is great. Very well explained
So how long until AIU makes a response to this?
Why can't you hate people for their ideas? People hate politicians for their ideas all the time.
This video has reminded me why I have such respect for Penn. Reaching out to the people behind the faces of their faith is critical. The only way we are going to be able to live and flourish in a multicultural/multi-faith world is to focus on commonality.
Is this a reupload?
Don't do that to me almost gave me a heart attack!
Which would make a lot of sense if being Muslim was a race and not a religion…
Holly Fuuuuuu... Penn, you almost gave me a heart attack XD
7:03 "The chances of a terrorist believing in Islam are pretty good. The chances of someone believing in Island of being a terrorist are very very bad, very little chance of that." He makes a very good point there.
Are you just recycling old videos now as a "recap"
dont know why the dislikes. sure he could have made some better points but he was very genuine and was reaonable
This has been on here before. Why is it being reuploaded?
just wonderful!
Holy shit, I was sitting with my jaw dropped during the entire introduction. Well played.
Thank you, Penn. I've been saying this since October of 2001. We are who we are because we are the people who put compassion and welcoming ahead of bigotry. It's been that way since the beginning of the USA.
was it Tony Iomi?
Re-upload? I believe I have seen this before.
Pearce's channel it says best of '16
Skrelp oid ah well that's what I get from not reading the whole video title?
is this a repost?
Oh my god he played me.
Sorry, I have to disagree with you on your evaluation of people as good overall. Most people aren't good or bad. They are "sheep" (for lack of a better word) that don't think for themselves and take the path of least resistance.
Sheep is such a cringe worthy word -_-

some do. I think it's rare.
but putting that aside,
whatever we can expect from a white or European person,
we can expect from any other.
What does being good or bad have to do with being a sheep?
why did they reissue this ??

Jack Culhane It was a joke. Not his fault your offended by a joke. It wasn't a slight at all.
Drhumbolt: Mockery is disrespect. I'm not offended, also not entertained, also not drawing the same conclusions as pen. Deal with it.
Jack Culhane I'm dealing by replying to you. Mockery: teasing and contemptuous language or behavior directed at a particular person or thing. Being contemptuous of someone or something means that you're combining a deep dislike for them with condescension. It was a joke.

Jack Culhane when was he yelling?
I'll have more love and compassion when OUR OWN sick, tired, and starving are no longer so.
This is a repost?
"You are not allowed to hate people for their ideas." I strongly disagree.
You are allowed to hate whomever you want. Should you, though?
The meaning is deeper than the words.
"Objectively shit"? This conversation is over :)

The point is hate the idea not the person who holds that idea. Because more than not that idea was forced upon them. We can show them different.
Holy shit you had me going. I was about to go join church myself.
Omg. I thought he was serious for a minute and I was like "WHHHHATTT?? NOOOOO!!!"
Dude u had me.... lmao that was fyckeddddd
Dude I almost choked on my tongue. Come on Penn don't do that shit again
I must admit I started reading the transcript during the first minute and spoiled it.
dammit, I paused the video before he said it was a joke and went to make a pj sandwich pondering about my life... son of a...

I love Penn Jillete. I find it hilarious that we need a magician to show us the truth.
Brilliant...
The beginning sounds like when terrorists make their prisoners read confessions to a video camera.
Never been to America, but love it; think it's the greatest society in the world, because of people like Penn Jillette. But I think he's wrong in this case, and wrong about President Elect Donald Trump: help the refugees, but help them to remain in safe zones in thier own countries. i was so confused for the first 50 seconds
We can not prove whether there is a god or not it, but it is obvious and requires no new evidence that no one listens to the prayers of believers, but themselves.
Damn, well put, sir. I'm a liberal and a Christian, but not a crazy "progressive". But your argument was perfectly delivered. Kudos.
"I don't doubt that ever," is a very dangerous way to approach any worldview or belief
If at first it doesn't' stick, then repeat until it does... Yes its an important message.
But why does this channel think that by reposting videos its going to be more popular?
The channel is revisiting what they consider the best of 2016, as the title claims.
you had me going
"Nevada, ITS A STATE YA KNOW!"
That is a myth.
YOU SCARED ME PENN. DONT DO THAT PLEASE.
im such a penn fan!
I laughed through his whole beginning shpiel!

YOU HAD ME!!!!! HAHA YOU FUNNY!!!!
Fuck you mr. Penn, you got me ! 😂😂😂
love this guy
I didn't believe this for a second. But it was funny all the same.
So you don't believe we should help those who cry out for help?
I gotta admit, at the beginning he nearly got me..
Holy shit. Well said. This is so insanely on point I'm shocked.
If I met that guy I would tell him here's my number. Even if we don't manage to become good friends, even if for some reason we go our own ways, if you ever are in need call me. Because there are people there for you. That story made me very sad to live in the country I do :(

I sure hope a terrorist doesn't get this guy. It would be hard for me to withhold my laughter should that happen.
There's no such thing as islamaphobia.
Great video, but you had me going there for a minute.
Most important part clearly @7:35. :-D
