Elden Ring: Frieren's Unique Take on Rellana (Thops's Barrier, Eternal Darkness, Miriam's Vanishing)

- looking forward to what you think of this fight and also taking suggestions on what bosses to tackle next with this build/mage gameplay
im afraid my d-pad will soon break (spell swap to this extent will take its toll at some point lol)
extremely fun fight, I had cleaner runs, but this felt more like a battle between mages; there was lots of back and forward spell casting in mid-range combat
went with comet this time, feels more appropriate (messmer fight next will showcase a unique take on melee sorcery which I'm not sure if people are aware of, found an interesting way to use a spell for that boss specifically)
all around pretty clean fight, the jump dodge didn't work which would be my only issue with this showcase; I went with lower damage than usual, wanted the fight to last longer to showcase more things, though it makes it way easier to make mistakes. I was very slightly late to jump it basically hit me from the last pixel which is unfortunate all around.
also tried to go for back to back parries as little as possible, it makes the fight way easier and makes it also look way less like a mage battle and this isn't meant to be a parry showcase (by itself), I basically disengage from the boss instead of staying close to him to parry again after the riposte
wanted to mainly showcase toph's barrier (can also be used to deflect the other glintblade casts, but I preferred to cast Eternal Darkness to showcase that spell)
also went with the new sorcery sword, pretty cool; also stops the need to swap for a riposte
should be an extremely unique type of battle, I hope it is enjoyable

Truly a 400 IQ fight. Like, you can just throw spells left and right, but using spells to counter other spells is real brainwork.
Renalla's Moon spell would be more fitting

Getting hit while casting a spell because no mana detection, such a Frieren moment, so true to character.
To fully utilise all spells , manage stamina , parry , roll AND micro management of selecting spells WHILE these monsters of bosses close their gap in a second are really hard to master. Don't know why some people keep saying mage is easy mode , not to mention you need to find good openings to cast too😅
That sword catalyst is going to be wonderful when they finally fix its missing sorcery scaling.

Fun fact is that they can increase the scaling by times 2 and it's still gonna be worse than the Carian Glintblade Staff which buffs carian magic and has a pretty low overall scaling

@@Birbucifer Blue Flame was cracked tho, since you could buff it with cristal weapon, which increased its magic damage which in turn increased the damage of the spells cast with it. And you could power stance it to buff both of them.
This rapier is really useless to cast anything than non-scaling spells, stuff like magic shield, Toph's barrier or Terra Magica, any damage spell is going to do nothing.

Seeing this kind of impressive display just makes me wish that the game had a proper spell selector rather than making you mash the d-pad. Imagine if you had a wheel and so didn't need a lot of practice to switch between this many spells.
The idea I think about a lot is that it would be really neat if the game let you assign different spells over what would be the various moves of a given catalyst. As when fighting with a normal weapon you have a selection of different moves for different situations and that already feels a bit like how selecting spells works in some other games.
Hard agree. It makes no sense that the game doesn't have something as simple as a 8 directional hotkeys system, similar to how Monster Hunter World/Rise handle hotkeys on items. Those two games go above and beyond to give keyboard and mouse an alternate option to directly assign hotkeys as well. Souls games are great, but some aspects like the one button spell swap that can't even go backwards are relics of an older time.
It's true that spell selection is underwhelming in these games, I just hope if they ever decide to change it, they don't ruin it for mouse and keyboard.
Played a bit of Code Vein and its approach with "holding a button gives other buttons the function to cast skills" is probably fine with controller but it's awful on keyboard.

Yeah boss has magic damage resist and the sword does pretty bad damage when casting spells, I used it cause it looks cool

This is exactly my idea of how elden ring should be played, a mix of melee abilities and spells. Unfortunately for me the spell selection system is just too annoying to bother.
Sometimes I have feeling they like to punish players rather than let them enjoy the game fully
I feel like people are sleeping on vanishing. If you tilt the stick while casting it can actually teleport you several feet

Does the staff you are using stack with the Beloved Stardust Talisman? I thought Beloved Stardust already maxes out your casting speed?
I'm not 100% sure, I was having an easier time with thops's barrier with that staff, might be just getting lucky also by me

yeah visually it doesn't hit me, you can dodge it like that; it just didn't work this time (it is easier if you are closer to the boss)
I hope the sword catalyst's spell buff is bugged because damn you make it look so good.
What talismans were you using?
Very fun play style, I couldn’t do any damage with +2buff and had to cheese her with poison dagger😂

I think it's the carrian sorcery sword, u can get that from the same are, but different path, u either around the area, or beat Rellana.

Really cool, unfortunately it reminds me of how shit the sorcery scaling on the sorcery sword is. Despite having like a billion points in mind you probably would have run out of FP if you'd kept using it.

it does, but it never increases as you upgrade the weapon, same scaling from +0 to +25
(might be a bug or they perhaps forgot)
