stars of ruin is a neccessary counter to assholes who just run after you and spam rolls waiting for you to empty your mp. In duels it's rarely neccessary, but against invaders who just flee when they're alone and hide behind monsters, it's delicate to win without it.
int faith hybrid builds are so fun, I've been doing this one for fun where I mostly use short range incantations (sword sorceries, dragonclaw, lightning weapons, etc) and it works a surprising amount of the time because people r not ready for it. ghostflame explosion is surprisingly great actually.
The game just handles large spell lists really poorly. You can only have one active at a time and you can only rotate it in one direction. It's just really clunky and requires more practice just to become somewhat comfortable with than most casual players are prepared to tolerate, particularly when a lot of the spells are functionally clones of each other with just different looking projectiles for the opponent to dodge roll.
@@ghostderazgriz Honestly for me Stars of Ruins tracking wasn't really the issue, but more the poise stun locking they did so they could close the distance with Moonveil or RoB early on in the games release. Or the pure sorcery stun killer. Stars of Ruin to stun lock well the caster closes the distance with Glintblades.
It’s not easy, if you want to have enough mana and intelligence to actually do damage you end up not being very tanky, also the animations for spell casting are lengthy and you cannot dodge while you are casting, so you need to have timing down and know the boss fights well because you die in 1-2 hits Practically doing a no hit run playing squishy mage
In dark souls 2 i strictly played a pure sorcery build for almost 600 hours and i had to get creative and use two staves, one on each hand, one the fastest casting staff and the other the slowest. I had to cast from both to mess with people's timing when dodging, it actually worked pretty consistently, but without doing that i would've been doomed in 90% of the duels.
I also ran some sorcerer built and mainly used the different types of spells to rollcatch people. Also had some poison clouds and weapon to give me some space against aggressive players. DS2 PVP was just the best 😍
Fun fact: Anti-Mage Mage builds are hilarious. Most mages run Eternal Darkness or one of the Moons, especially when facing another caster...but there's a few spells that can be used to counteract this, namely Briars of Punishment, as well as the Night Sorceries to some extent. BoP is really good at throwing other mages for a loop, especially since it's not often used in typical gameplay (because its otherwise outclassed in some form), and because of it's timing compared to other spells.

In the end, I spent 5 minutes lying in wait, watching a box and a dead rat slowly creeping towards my dead rat. Then, when they finally got close enough... I jumped them with RoB spam and killed them all like the punk I was :p
A it’s such a good time when people use the spells they like instead of whatever spell is ranked best. It’s so much more fun fighting a guy using his own build, and not a carbon copy of one from a strategy guide.
you would like my main build then, it was a strenght/faith build with the bastard sword (my favorite weapons in dark souls 2 and 3), with the red lion flamme weapons art and some support spells (health regen, light orb spell, buff spells,...) with no headgear, yura armor, yura gauntlet and milician trouser to give a wanderer mercenary/witcher like style to the character. unfortunately, i stopped playing it and probably never come back, because i play game for fun and not for tryhard,so on the long term,I’ve got tired of getting crushed like a sh*t by bosses who were designed to be as overpowered and unfair as possible, and disgust by toxic invaders who always come harassed you whenever you want to coop with friends. and add to that i go through very hard thing in my personnal life since 1,5 years, so i think you can understand playing games like that who were designed to reminded you constantly you’re just an insect here to be beated to a pulp by almost everything isn’t a good idea when you suffer from depression and loneliness in real life.
@@nutterbotter8308 nah, either dual wield the carian staves for the + 20% spell damage or use Lusat's staff main hand and offhand carian for ~ 35% more damage. you can 2-3 shot with slicer alone that way.
Pro strategy is not to lock on actually all the time. Those hovering swords you can backstep towards someone and turn around to instant tag them as a surprise.
As someone who enjoys living viciously through big brained people in the soulslike community i see a plethora of builds, to say the least. Seeing this title, i as expecting much a montage of frantic spell casting and seeing who can one shot. I was not expecting this to be the first mage battle i see. Very strategic and great battle by both fighters. I may not know what's going on with the icons to the left and names of whatever but I'm here for the game play, YTber challenges and memes. I love that i found this video.
Honestly, I would recommend Thop's Barrier instead of Carian Retaliation if you're going to be using Carian Phalanx. Similar effect and doesn't override your phalanx.
I’d experimented with that spell because i think is unique and has an element of surprise and combo potential the only problem is you have to be a timing master to properly take advantage of it. Which i am not 😅
Thop's Barrier is too clunky to use if you have so many spells equipped. Carian Retaliation is always just going to be more reliable because it's an ash of war so you can press L2 and immediately cast it when you need it
It's hardly worth the cost for PvP since the tracking was nerfed, it's only good at punishing long animations and even then other spells do it better for cheaper. If you want a poking spell, its lesser variant, Star Shower, is better for that now. SoR still shreds PvE tho, as enemies only dodge once on the initial cast.
Collapsing Stars is literally my favorite spell in the game. Glad to see it getting some use. It's even better when you use it with CRS's buffed Spinning Weapon Ash of War. Throw in some Carian Slicers and Piercers, and you've got a surprisingly powerful close range build.
I have not gotten good in PvP, but I've gone for a magic boost and free spell with the flask of Wondrous Physique, and in order to completely thrash a boss or many enemies, Meteorites of Astel can bé devastating.
It was painful to watch them repeatedly cast pew pews even when the void was there to suck them up. Man, talk about rubbing your only two braincells together...
rannis dark moon - high damage high reach, homing in faster and faster, aoe explosion, frostbite plus debuff on resistances AND it absorbs enemy spells along the way.
People are complaining but I’ve been a powerstance strength build main for almost a decade and I think this is cool as fuck. This is what makes souls games so sick.
As someone who mains a pure dex build in PvP, my favorite opponents are spam mages now that stars of ruin can be dodged. I feel the Naruto music playing in my brain as I dodge all the projectiles.
This was fun to watch! I’m a faith/arcane samurai build but have just started leveling my intelligence as well. Should be some good fun. (120 hours in my FIRST play through)
I love seeing mage vs mage fights but mage vs melee is usually extremely one-sided. Either the melee rushes the mage and destroys them or the caster just burns the melee down.
Such a shame that FROM doesn't want to give casters a combat update. It's like, can we finally lose the useless R2 Bonk and have a cantrip spell tied to the catalyst instead. (Something similar to Farron Dart/Flashsword power wise but costs 0 FP to use.) The lack of access to the spell-like Ash of Wars was also a bit of a disappointment, as having access to something like 'Ice Spear' on a Staff would've been some nice eye candy to have.
@@clankymocha I personally have my doubts, as it appears to me that it was a top-down executive design choice to make catalysts fully dependent on being used to compliment a weapon. Which I think was the biggest reason for catalysts being stuck with only 3 options for AoW. While a pure caster build is viable, it's also a bit impractical, as doing so leaves a lot of dead space in your arsenal options compared to other builds. Bows/Crossbows are also stuck in the same rut as Pure Casters: Lack of AoW variety, no infusions, heavy talisman reliance, and resource limited attacks. It just irritates me, mostly because martial builds get new updates with nearly every new title, while Casters/Ranged Builds have practically remained the same since Demon's Souls.
@@Battleguild I agree that incantations and bows/crossbows seem to only exist to compliment a melee playstyle, bows and crossbows are bad at it too because of their scaling But I think sorcery has come a very long way in terms of being your main source of damage since ds1 for example, we now have a very wide selection of spammable projectiles, slow ones, fast ones, ones made for crowd control or have an AOE, some are chargeable spell, some are long range spells, others have short range, there are even spells meant for stealth and now we even have a good selection of melee spells Add to that the fact we also now have 3 different defensive spells to deal with incoming projectiles and we he have what I think is a pretty robust magic system in its own right that is very much worth expanding on. Though gravity based spells could be better at actually pulling enemies and such. Incantations have come a very long way too but they serve a very different purpose, there's a reason we don't really have a spammable bread and butter type spell for them, they clearly are meant for melee builds like pyromancies and miracles before them.
@@clankymocha I absolutely agree that ER has the best spells out of the Soulsborne games. The problem I have with casters is the fact that the L1 (while two-handed), L2, and R2 buttons for pure casters are effectively dead buttons. (With a single AoW as an exception.) Being completely limited to R1 and UP-D to function, or L1 if you are using two catalysts. Casters and Crossbows are also blocked off from Power Stance, so we also completely miss out in combat tech there as well.
@@Battleguild I think you are supposed to have something in your other hand to counteract this, you could use a small backup melee weapon, it doesn't have to be your main source of damage at all(after all, all sorcerer classes have always started with a dagger in their inventory) or, what I prefer is having a shield, scholar's shield lets you turn any small or medium shield to a 100% physical negation one and also have great magic defense But what I really use them for is carian retaliation, parrying spells feels so great, though I wish they'd buff it to deal respectable damage again, the nerf was a bit too much.
yeah this kinda gameplay only works when the duelists have agreed to a certain conduct.. could have been over sooner if either of them decided to play more aggressively

My man parries a spell. Amazing
This became an Overlord battle where two badasses are just firing spells at each other.
I was just trying to do varré's quest and invaded someone, it was three people using the mimic veil and when I found them they all immediately spammed as many soceries possible, I didn't even have enough time to heal. Who knew I could find someone who out spammed gideon
I once had an epic mimic veil duel where me, the host, and his summons were all disguised as sewer trash in the pipes under the capital.
It turned into a contest of who would notice who moving first. In the end, I spent 5 minutes lying in wait, watching a box and a dead rat slowly creeping towards my dead rat. Then, when they finally got close enough... I jumped them with RoB spam and killed them all like the punk I was :p
@@magicianman534 Had me till you mentioned RoB 👎

@@bofa722 But it got nerfed 🤓

This might actually be the most realistic demonstration of a battle between two mages in all forms of media

MAGIC VS MELEE = MELEE WINS
Wait till these guys figure out that night magic doesn’t get absorbed by that thing
And then there's me. I haven't finished the game yet, but I've never used a spell, only claws. I love how much different two players can be
If you are contemplating on magic, just use Carian spells.
Full melee sorcerer is my fav build; The Carian sword spells are actually unreasonably good.
AND the haima. Because thou unga, therefore thy bunga
@@vennin7781pair that shit with the dark moon great sword.
@@nutterbotter8308 nah, either dual wield the carian staves for the + 20% spell damage or use Lusat's staff main hand and offhand carian for ~ 35% more damage. you can 2-3 shot with slicer alone that way.

Absolutely reasonable. They cost FP, but regular weapon swings don't.
Sorcerers will spam 2 tao spells at me and get mad when I spam bloodhound step.

Pro strategy is not to lock on actually all the time. Those hovering swords you can backstep towards someone and turn around to instant tag them as a surprise.
This takes me back to playing Gen 3 Armored Core. The spells and spell redirection reminds me of shooting missiles and anti-missile pods.

Battle of the introverts
This is about as exciting as it gets, folks. Sorcery at its finest.
"So who was your favourite boss?"
"Boss? what's that? I've just been spamming azur comet the entire game"
Honestly, I would recommend Thop's Barrier instead of Carian Retaliation if you're going to be using Carian Phalanx. Similar effect and doesn't override your phalanx.
Less FP cost as well, i think
I’d experimented with that spell because i think is unique and has an element of surprise and combo potential the only problem is you have to be a timing master to properly take advantage of it. Which i am not 😅
@@Crestfallen_Warrior Thop's barrier cost no FP on shields, but is strictly used for defense.
can even be used creatively to throw people off with some spells like glintblade
Thop's Barrier is too clunky to use if you have so many spells equipped. Carian Retaliation is always just going to be more reliable because it's an ash of war so you can press L2 and immediately cast it when you need it
To be fair, this would've ended much sooner if one of them ran at the other with a greatword.
This isn't dark souls anymore, sorcerers are by no means weak at close range.
much more logical than any harry potter fight
it's almost as if there's more to this game then spamming lion's claw with the guts sword
Now THIS is a true wizard battle!
Night comet doesnt get sucked up by eternal darkness. You're welcome
Surprised nobody was spamming stars of ruin lol
It's hardly worth the cost for PvP since the tracking was nerfed, it's only good at punishing long animations and even then other spells do it better for cheaper. If you want a poking spell, its lesser variant, Star Shower, is better for that now. SoR still shreds PvE tho, as enemies only dodge once on the initial cast.
stars of ruin got nerfed like months ago
"The game should have an easy mode"...
The easy mode:
strength isn't easy mode?
That's why carian blade spells are handy, you can really surprise opposing casters.
>meanwhile, any average melee build rushes them down and obliterates them in seconds before they even get a chance to cast
Carian slicer, adula's moonblade and carian thrust exist.
@@clankymocha true but most people will poise through slicer, which is the only thing fast enough to compete with any melee weapon.
this feels like a mmorpg pvp match
this is why i multiclass. both of these guys would expect their opponent to not pull out a cleanrot sword and charge them.
I can’t get mad at spell casters in pvp. It just makes it all the more rewarding to get close and bonk in melee.
Except you don’t, because light roll
This is one of the reasons why I like magic
Damn...
Now imagine if magic wasn't restricted to changing spells with a single button only.
(Or if magic by default slowly regenerated like stamina.)
I would be a monster
The way you use Loretta's greatbow spell looks so mesmerizing with how they round around like that. Very fun!
Man, talk about rubbing your only two braincells together...
rannis dark moon - high damage high reach, homing in faster and faster, aoe explosion, frostbite plus debuff on resistances AND it absorbs enemy spells along the way.
its like chess for real men
People are complaining but I’ve been a powerstance strength build main for almost a decade and I think this is cool as fuck. This is what makes souls games so sick.
This is how I feel fighting Melania solo as a sorcerer
Very nice…
*pulls out Moonveil with FP ring*
Fighting a mage feels like fighting a miniboss
As someone who mains a pure dex build in PvP, my favorite opponents are spam mages now that stars of ruin can be dodged. I feel the Naruto music playing in my brain as I dodge all the projectiles.
This was fun to watch! I’m a faith/arcane samurai build but have just started leveling my intelligence as well. Should be some good fun. (120 hours in my FIRST play through)
“lightning bolt! lightning bolt!”
"Bazinga! Bazinga! Bazinga!"
ARCANE BLAST!
Watching this made me not look at renallas toes anymore because I can’t stand the thought of magic
I love seeing mage vs mage fights but mage vs melee is usually extremely one-sided. Either the melee rushes the mage and destroys them or the caster just burns the melee down.
Whip out your great sword and rush that magic nerd!
Such a shame that FROM doesn't want to give casters a combat update. It's like, can we finally lose the useless R2 Bonk and have a cantrip spell tied to the catalyst instead. (Something similar to Farron Dart/Flashsword power wise but costs 0 FP to use.)
The lack of access to the spell-like Ash of Wars was also a bit of a disappointment, as having access to something like 'Ice Spear' on a Staff would've been some nice eye candy to have.
Well we still have an expansion coming, fingers crossed for more staff ashes of war
@@clankymocha
I personally have my doubts, as it appears to me that it was a top-down executive design choice to make catalysts fully dependent on being used to compliment a weapon.
@@Battleguild I agree that incantations and bows/crossbows seem to only exist to compliment a melee playstyle, bows and crossbows are bad at it too because of their scaling
But I think sorcery has come a very long way in terms of being your main source of damage since ds1 for example, we now have a very wide selection of spammable projectiles, slow ones, fast ones, ones made for crowd control or have an AOE, some are chargeable spell, some are long range spells, others have short range, there are even spells meant for stealth and now we even have a good selection of melee spells
Add to that the fact we also now have 3 different defensive spells to deal with incoming projectiles and we he have what I think is a pretty robust magic system in its own right that is very much worth expanding on.
Though gravity based spells could be better at actually pulling enemies and such.
Incantations have come a very long way too but they serve a very different purpose, there's a reason we don't really have a spammable bread and butter type spell for them, they clearly are meant for melee builds like pyromancies and miracles before them.
@@clankymocha
I absolutely agree that ER has the best spells out of the Soulsborne games.
@@Battleguild I think you are supposed to have something in your other hand to counteract this, you could use a small backup melee weapon, it doesn't have to be your main source of damage at all(after all, all sorcerer classes have always started with a dagger in their inventory) or, what I prefer is having a shield, scholar's shield lets you turn any small or medium shield to a 100% physical negation one and also have great magic defense
But what I really use them for is carian retaliation, parrying spells feels so great, though I wish they'd buff it to deal respectable damage again, the nerf was a bit too much.
