Well it all started with Judith Butler and Michel Foucault, Saul Alinsky, and Simone de Beouviour. Then the language of “You’re going to unalive (thanks UA-cam for making me sound like a weirdo) us if you don’t affirm us!” was borrowed from the highly successful ActUp. People give too much credit to Stonewall. ActUp was much more activist led.

We just weren't paying attention : busy with our own lives, holidays, booze & telly. For decades. Anyone trying to raise awareness were tin-foil-hatters and thereby 'advisedly' ridiculed and ignored. It's easy to creep up on people who are avidly engaged in naval gazing.
@@annbrown3037 I went to art college in San Francisco in the 90s, so I was fully aware of these ideas, and completely entrenched in them. But when I got my first job in an office and nobody was talking about gender and race intersectionality or postmodern philosophy I then assumed I had learned a bunch of ideology that was very much never going to leave the very far left academic world. So I was genuinely shocked when, twenty years later, this stuff reared its ugly head again. I really was so glad to leave all of those people and beliefs behind, after going through the painful process of having to unlearn it all in order to sustain a job. I can’t tell you how sickening it is that I have to deal with all of this again.
I’ve long said that NB is the new goth. As a former goth it’s transparent that this is a teenage sub-culture. You’re going to have passionate adherents to the identity.
As a former goth, who grew out of it, like most do…. How is this NB bs going to pan out. These kids have exposed their foolishness on the internet, gone all-in, mutilated themselves…. Growing up is going to be extra painful.
@@sarahhale-pearson533I would think it would be difficult to get a relationship, a job or even have a stable personal life if you were full time living as a goth, emo, hip hop, grunge or NB. People grow out it when they become adults and want real jobs, families, and healthy home lives.

Yes, these subcultures come about in societies that are loosing their foundation, the parents give the child no solid ground on which to stand. The West was exclusively Catholic once, and that's where are now rapidly unravelling civilisation came from. Subcultures were always tribal and the tribal goes back to pre-civilisation. I grew up in a very strong Catholic culture, I honestly never felt a need to wonder and question who I was. And I certainly would never have thought that all these years later, we are encouraged to reduce our identity to pure material biology.
It was well understood years ago that transitioning was only for a very small number of people, and there were very strict requirements you had to meet in order to have it. You couldn't have surgery on demand like it is now. I believe that all of this was correct. There are many trans people that I've known for over 30 years, and even they have a problem with the sudden proliferation of young people being transitioned today. Several of them have never even had the surgery themselves because they knew that it wasn't for them. I'm gay myself and I can tell you that it is very common for certain gay teenagers to develop a temporary fascination with being trans, but by the time they reach their late teens they are perfectly comfortable with their own body, and look back on those days with a kind of embarrassment as just a phase they went through as teens. Yet we never hear about any of this in all the discussion taking place today, even though it used to be well understood.

I wish your community would speak out about this teenage phase more. The straight population really is unaware of this temporary phase for Gay boys. Is it true for Lesbians too, do you know?
I hope the LBGTQ Community comes forward with the truth about this, rather than letting the militants dominate the message to promote harmful sex change surgeries.

well just because someone walking their partner on a dog chain at the grocery store doesnt technically cause "harm" doesnt make it ok. bringing your fetish into the public space means you are involving strangers in your weird sex stuff WITHOUT THEIR CONSENT.
Boiling it down to only "consent" as a barrier misses many other issues.

Fundamentally, to say that somebody else's behavior isn't your business because it doesn't "harm" anyone - well, at least, not anybody else - is to presuppose that other people's well being (physically or psychologically) is radically disconnected from other people. We all have an interest in living in a society of generally well-adjusted people capable of exercising well their ability to live a good life. While we all equally are facing the question of just what that consists of (and thus, should leave each other free to make the endeavor each ourselves), that does not mean we only have an interest in one's own self getting the question right.
Also, he neglects how perversions often hurt the person themself, who have these "orientations" or paraphilias or fetishes.
And how it impacts those who love them.
@@megsley I hear ya. It is the issue being pushed most in popular conversation around sex in general but it is really the bare minimum and stops people recognizing the effect of coercion and that horrible things being done under the concept of consent alone, can lead to extrordinarily horrifying outcomes.
The way that Dr. Hakeem guides the introspective process for his clients in therapy is exactly what I've found to be most successful with my own clients in their gender exploration. It's showing GENUINE curiosity, not starting off with assumptions and attempt to change someone; the client can usually feel this difference and makes the relationship and dialogue even more productive. It's a genuine cooperative exploration versus setting up an adversarial dynamic, and allows the patient the power of experiencing the logic and arriving at the solution themselves, where the skill and knowledge are more likely to stick.
You can take the person out of Goth but not Goth out of the person. What a great interview! Will check out his book. Gen x rules ❤

They need understanding and compassion. They didn't choose this. Maybe less trans widows and harmed families if we start to get that this is some peoples reality.
People should tell the people they are marrying or having kids with what their reality looks like. Lying about it makes trans widows and broken families much more likely.
Telling your kids they can be anything is a corrosive idea that can and will destroy them as they break themselves on an ideal they can never attain.
I became an artistic addict who to this day still struggles with some substances and procrastination/playing video games too long. At 27 years olds
Doing ALOT better now, but the world is much more boring and annoying now as I don’t partake in as much as what I “want” and do more of what I don’t feel like or don’t want to do.

The problem with Goth 5.0 is the teachers at school, the newsreaders and the medical profession supply your fanzines, heroes and adventure narratives.
Agree. Coaching a group of clients vs 1:1 can be powerful experience for the individual as they are removed from the “hot seat” and are better able to observe similar thoughts, feelings and behaviors in others like them.
My mantra is “It’s not about gender.”

@@Gingerblaze I’ve seen it with detransitioners in group coaching. It’s eye opening for them to see they are not alone in their thoughts and feelings and that some of their prior and current thinking have been distorted and unhelpful.
As a grandmother of a child not yet in the public school system I have found myself concerned him wanting to learn more about this topic. I've been researching and watching a lot of UA-cam and this is providing me with the best insight and education ever. I will buy Dr. Hakeem's book!

I've been saying this for years, that this has replaced the youth music movements of "yore".
Most sensible, balanced conversation I've heard on the subject from men. About time it wasn't just the GC gems talking about it!
I've been saying the same thing too. When I was growing up, there were goths, scene kids, metalheads, white hip hop fans (pejoratively called "wiggers" back then lol.) Those cliques don't really exist anymore. Some kids are more preppy or alt, but it's just slight variations of the same style from TikTok. And they listen to whatever is currently trendy, which is all pop, hip hop or a blend of both.
People always reply "What about Billie Eilish?" Or that other chick that I can't remember the name of. Something Rodriguez? They're the same slight variation of fashion and pop music that I mentioned before.
The section about sexuality in autism fits so well with Sheldon on Big Bang Theory.

If I heard him correctly he no longer sees patients with gender issues. It seems like if he doesn’t see patients then he might miss out on changes in why people come out as trans.
For instance, I don’t know how much he touched on the social contagion aspect. I personally have seen one person in a friend group come out as trans, random people tell them how proud they are of them and how brave they are. Pretty soon the entire friend group identifies as trans.
There’s also a community aspect to it. If you’re trans you have basically an instant connection and level of trust with anyone else that’s trans. You have a community that supports you.
For people that are outcasts, suddenly they become the center of attention and have an easy way to make friends where ever they go.
I think it’s also gives them a goal in life. They pick a new name, get new clothes, get on hormones, get top surgery, get bottom surgery. Doesn’t matter if they don’t work, go to school, clean their apartment, transitioning is their one and only goal, nothing else matters. They might spend their time obsessing over transitioning, constantly trying new looks to see if they pass. There is no doubt about transitioning, it becomes an obsession.
Even if they get pushback from people, that just emboldens them further. It’s proof to them they are being oppressed. They’re no longer part of the inherently racist and sexist white majority. Negative attention is still attention.
Maybe all of that is in current research or maybe it’s something you would only see if you were interacting with people claiming to be trans. It goes along with this idea about who is the most open minded. Like being poly amorous is being enlightened, being gender fluid is enlightened, being bi/multi sexual is enlightened. I’ve actually heard people say something like “oh they’re straight, well they’re born that way, they can’t help it”.
People are trying to be more special than the next person. Trans, poly, gender fluid, wiling to date anyone, disabilities, (DID, EDS, POTS, autism, ADHD, etc) who is seeing the most doctors? Who is on the most medications?
I think we are headed into uncharted territory. And guess what, when you have no job you can spend 12 hours a day looking up disorders. You can figure out exactly what to say to get a diagnosis for just about anything. You can say you have always felt dysphoric and were too afraid to tell anyone. You can say you have amnesia, you hear voices, you see things. Point being, someone convinces themself they have DID and need a wheelchair, what other delusions have they convinces themselves of? How do you reason with someone with an obsession that completely defines their every waking moment? It’s their identity, their friend group, gets them attention, makes them feel special. Without the trans identity they can no longer use that as an excuse for failure in life, they have to face their true issues, they have to figure out who they are as a person and not worry about how society sees them.
That’s why I think there’s more to the gender issues than what was going on in the past. You don’t have people transitioning for the same reasons as before.
He did go into trans as the new generational sub culture. It's a Fad that will leave behind it regrets and broken people like a lot of sub cultures before it have. This one just has the medical and corporate enterprise getting involved.
@@TheJan5 He went into it but if he’s no longer seeing patients for gender issues then I wonder how knowledgeable he will be about the changing gender landscape. He seems pretty knowledgeable about gender issues (at least up until the car litter box comment), and that knowledge seems to come from first hand experience with people with gender issues. Like how he said he had a mixed group of people wanting to transition and regretting transition, that’s first hand experience. I just wonder if he’s now just doing interviews and writing books, whether his knowledge on the subject will be lacking. I think part of the issue with gender issues is the medical field isn’t keeping speed with the social changes. The “only affirm” model isn’t working. There needs to be work on how to get people absolutely obsessed with transitioning on why they should be more cautious.
Sounds like it evolves from a self dislike / need of to be accepted ,to an obsesión and finally to an addiction which one feel he can’t live without .its like weed or other drug users it becomes all about the drug chasing the high which in reality is just a patch to cover up the real issues that some times can be extremely harmful.

This was one of the most informative interviews I have ever seen. How can so many people suspend common sense and believe acknowledging biological sex is hateful, banning therapy for confused children, promoting off-label use of drugs (puberty blockers) & surgery for minors is appropriate? It's actually child abuse. On top of that we're expected to tolerate living in a climate of fear.

Dr Hakeem appears to be suggesting that transgender presentation is a symptom, not a singular syndrome. If so, a singular pathway for trans-affirming care is highly unlikely to provide consistent results.
Yes...but it is being pushed hard by a number of various groups with vested interests.
The pressure in the UK is to outlaw exploratory therapy,making the untangling of this complex field impossible,on pain of convicton in court.
No wonder he says that many of his colleagues walk away when a client strays into gender territory...I would as well....

In this case it just happens that their fetish manifests in the clothing they wear and creates a predatory situation in public situations, especially when children are present.

I think you need a much deeper understanding of autogynephilic and its complexities and subtypes. Real people live with this and real people can tell you about their experience. In 2017 when my daughter told me she was a they (in middle school), i tuned in to figure out wtf that meant, and started seeing that all of her friends also were also saying they were they's. The first thing i said after understanding was, "Ooooooh! Trans is the new goth!"

(It's sort of a thing with martial arts.) I've often wondered if there were men who transition because they find women and the idea of being around women less intimidating.

Dr Az Hakeem caused me pssd (post ssri sexual dysfunction). He prescribed me sertralline and I asked him did this medication have any sexual side affects and he said they have none. When I started taking sertralline I came back to him complaining about low libido and erectile dysfunction and he said they shouldn't be causing me those symptoms and perscribed me viagra. Even though I have been off the medication for 3 years I still suffer from erectile dysfunction and diminished libido and numbness from sertralline. This man has ruined my life and is a liar, he should not be trusted.

As always, super interesting and thought provoking. Thank you! Also... um... in your opinion, are intellectuals just crap at drinking water or is it something else? The gray under-eye circles are like a requirement for coming on your podcast 😂but seriously, the nutrient levels and health habits of any person can drastically affect their sexuality, emotions, mental abilities, etc. It matters for the people thinking about them too 💛
i wasn't going "grow out" of my desire to transition though... and no, i don't have any abonormal sexual desires. i just want to move through life passing as a woman, and i do. i waited until 22, pulled the trigger and move on with my life. thriving now and moving on from aviation into natural science studies.
I have a question. Most subcultures are against the previous generation of teachers, parents, and other institutions. So why would the kids be on board with all this since it's taught in school? I guess I am having trouble seeing it that way since it looks like a lot of adults are on board. Maybe the upcoming zoomers are going to fix some of this. There's a rise in my of outdoor independence and play for the 11 and unders you know with the Swifties and non-Swifties. Maybe music helping form identities will come back! I am not even done the video, so maybe your guest touches on this in the video...which is a great calmversation BTW.
Is trans ideology actually taught in schools? Having the teachers address kids by their preferred pronouns isn’t the same thing as teaching children about gender ideology. There’s also probably going to be a lot of variety in schools in how accepted transgender students are. Some kids might identify as trans because they are outcasts (for a lack of a better word) and are looking for a group of people that accept them. You might also have people come out as trans and suddenly they become super popular with everyone telling them how brave they are how proud everyone is of them. That’s kind of two extremes of the social situation, joining a small group of outcasts or doing it and becoming popular (or trying to be popular after seeing someone else get attention).
Coming out as trans is still something that’s fairly new. Maybe once / if it becomes normalized then people won’t get attention (positive or negative).
Even negative attention is attention, if you’re white and male for instance you’re told you’re an oppressor and inherently racist. Come out as trans and now you are part of an oppressed minority.
If things get to the point where it’s no big deal that anyone is trans, kind of like I doubt most people would cares if anyone was goth, then maybe the social contagion aspect will die down.
@user-bz2gz8yd3c In sex or health education by grade 4, where I live (not US), the concept of having a gender identity is taught in school. It may differ depending on how teachers approach it. Our teacher warned us kind of. I have the course material from when my boys were younger, too. Therefore, there was talk of it 8 years ago.
I know from paying attention, that many young women, more than boys, seem to be on board ideologically, and it's mostly girls that I know who are using opposite sex or non binary pronouns. I think I know of one MTF. The ones I notice are usually artistic and possibly autistic. Just an observation!
So my thought was, why are the kids following a trend that adults are supporting? My generation would have been rebelling against it! Or maybe they trust teachers more because they are on their side. Maybe they think some adults are cool and some are not. They certainly are not interested in the old social media that their parents use (Facebook). So they do have some areas where they are individuating from the previous generation.
I would add, artistic, possibly autistic, atypically feminine, or have a significant trauma or mental health condition. This is purely from observation.
Re. Kids being on board: I think it still is a rebellion, the attitude is rather spoilt and nothing is ever enough, demands must be met or there will be consequences. So the older generation are almost roped into the whole thing (which is new)
The naval gazing also means over involvement from: parents, teachers, police, etc. isn’t noticed.

I'm currently taking HRT and I've tried to quit several times only to have my psyche break after a week and then I end up back on it. I feel masculine on the HRT and feel the desire to be in a relationship with a woman but I hate my male body so much because of childhood trauma. I noticed that if I behave too feminine for too long my masculine side will take over. It's like two people are living within me, It's a terrible yanking back and forth that's incredibly exhausting. I want to accept it and get off HRT for good. I've come to the conclusion that I can't get off it alone. I can't keep messing with my hormones like that. I need serious help.

The title of this profound conversation is a turn off. I am trying to get my mental health professional colleagues to listen and learn and the titles are an immediate turn off and make it seem like I am promoting something irrelevant. Please consider this.
