IU shared a letter that Tang Wei wrote to her after filming talking about her experience, and everything mentioned in the letter makes it very blatant that the relationship in the MV is about a mother and daughter (Tang Wei mentions key memories of her childhood and her relationship with her own mother, for instance). But I will say that the story in the MV is more than just mother-daughter, since there are two sides to the story and that part is only from Tang Wei's POV. IU's POV in the second verse is about a 'friendship'. Theory: In the PAST, She placed those she loved in there (so they can be with her forever) - her mother and her friend. In the PRESENT, she spots IU, who looks very much like her mother, when she was younger. Before seeing IU, she had early spotted someone who looked like her friend, whom she (assumed that she knocked out) placed in the boot. She would have place IU in the boot too except IU boldly approached her first. It can be assumed the woman in the boot will be placed down there too. But IU will be her mother figure in the present and most probably live together, with IU keeping her secret...Shh A dark theme indeed. Love the story line. Want a darker theme: Consider she has been driving around looking out for people that resembles her mother and her friend. If this isn't her first drive, then how many people has she "collected" in there? This MV is about the relationship of Mother and Daughter. It was already stated by Tang Wei during an interview. It’s not GL. We can also have friendship with our mothers. 🙂

WONSUN JOE sings about the complicated emotions towards one's role model. It's a song about women sharing their complicated emotions that can't be summarized simply as either love, friendship, obsession or something else.”
Plus, the participating singers, directors, actors, and narrators are all women. Although (maybe) the main story is about a mother and daughter, because that’s the first and the most important relationship between women and it seems like IU was first inspired by mother-daughter relationship, It’s not only about that, It’s about the diverse and complex relationships between different women and the respect we have for them. The song is about female solidarity through generations that all women can relate to!!!

It is about mother daughter relationships period. No other relationship even comes close. A friend to which you refer for a young girl like that depicted in the video, is often her mother. It is not about a young girl's friendship with another young girl. All such relationships come and go, but you can never escape the relationship with your mother. Not sure why people are wanting to demean the mother daughter relationship. To the point of putting it on the same footing as a friendship between 2 non related women. It isn't the same thing. You aren't genetically connected to another women like you are your mother.
My mother died at a young age. I have 2 older sister who missed out on that relationship and no friend nor a step mother can replace it, the good and the bad. Simply not possible.

Yes, they played the mother and daughter role in the mv but the song is not only about mother daughter relationship. The creator IU said it herself. omg what are you angry about? no one is saying bad thing about mother and daughter relationship story. I cried when I read the part about mother and daughter. Don't spread your wrong personal interpretations.

from what i understand about the video, Tang wei (who is the daughter) while she is in the car suddenly remembers her mother (when she was younger) and she was surprised because she "hid" her away in her memories so the mv continues with her remembering more and more about her mother thanks to the photos wondering about why she still loves her even though some memories are bad (i think the nightmare means that). then she says that it was like her mother was her friend but at some point this changed and it became worst but then she realized that her mother has always been true to herself so maybe this means that she changed and not her mother. after that at the end she embrace her mother I think because she understood what her mothers was thinking and her emotions after all that time she maybe couldn t understand her fully

L love..Maybe F is fear... Fear is often considered the opposite of Love...fear of losing the love, leads to a bevy of ills....and can create a "mobius strip" of emotions.... "Mobius strip" over the doorway in the beginning and ending of the MV must have an intentional placement, IU doesn't do anything by chance

In Tang Wei's letter to IU, it was said that through the making of this music video and the line from the song, she wondered if her eyes were really like her mother's and she really wanted to check it out. She also said that she thought about how she imagined her mom in her younger years. And she realized that this image is not clear, because she was not part of her life then and she only knows it from her father's words and photos. On the set she imagined that she met her in her younger years and suddenly realized that her mother was just like her - young, beautiful and shining on stage. I think both the song and the video express that the relationship between mom and daughter is a special bond. Something beyond friendship and beyond love. Something special. One thing continues the other. When you're a kid you're sometimes unable to understand why mom acts a certain way. You know and see mom from one side. But when you grow up, you understand her better. Because you start to see the world from her perspective. And this story repeats itself again only with another child and another mom. A amazing song and music film on the theme of the connection of women in the family and their sometimes difficult relationships on the way to understanding each other.
IU's verse doesn't go on naming relationships between women and leaves it on a free end to suggest that it can be any female relationship that strengthens you throughout the hardships of being a woman. More to emphasize female empowerment. which serves as a strengthening factor. In this case, maybe the mother.
I know I am on a tangent today but it could also be a daughter or anyone finally understanding the reason for their mother's actions as they have grown up.

There is mo question that this is about a mother daughter relationships. The lyrics bear this out, the video bears this out, IU's and Tang Wei's message bear this out.
One of the opening lines the daughter says she has hidden her mother away. Referring to another woman as Mother leaves no room for other interpretations of the relationship. And no other relationship is like the relationship between mother and daughter, period.
But as if this needs any further evidence there is the scene late in the video where IU and a young girl are laying with eachother. It is obviously and without question the daughter and IU as the mother. In the video Tang Wei's memories of her mother are of when her mother was around the same age that the daughter is now. This allows IU to play Wei's memory of her mother.
At the end of the video the. Cycle is repeated as it is now Wei's daughter sitting in the car with her memories of her mother (Tang Wei).
Any other interpretation is a perversion of this beautiful video.

I think the shop sign is the clue that its an ongoing loop. Anything hidden is a memory/subconscious but always leaves a clue (dress tail caught outside trap door and car boot)
S is IU as the mother of Tang Wei (H).
H is Tang wei as the daughter who has hidden memories of the mother but finds that IU (S) looks like the mum.
Next scene, H looks like the friend ( another H because they look alike) of IU (S) who has hidden memories of her friend.
So SHH.. is the song title because on going loop as seen from the end when cycle starts again with ladies in blue.
IU got 4 generations of good korean singers into the MV. I think it rep that one generation make the way for the generation that comes, like mother/women make the way for daughters/women and they are all connected in a loop, generation after generation.

I kinda remember inception. It seems like she built a place according to her memories and prisoned her mom. And also her mom in those memories wants to catch her daughter and be with her it really was the same feeling as inception for me. Honestly, I didn't understand much either. I understood that IU's character is the other character's mother, and that in the end she forgives her daughter. It also has something to do with the name of the street, which refers to the eternal return. I didn't quite understand it either! ;-) But I really liked the music and Hyein's voice, (who is only 15 years old), and I liked the acting of the actresses.

Like all these things, it's open to different interpretations, especially as the song / mv seem to work on a bunch of different layers. For me, it was very much about mother daughter relationships with an added narrative (my interpretation) of a poor, single mother raising her daughter and trying to shield the daughter from the realities of the mother's life (hence all the stuff around hiding the daughter in different ways). As a result, the daughter grew up suppressing her memories of the mother because of the unpleasantness of her childhood memories. Until, as a grown up woman, the daughter grew to understand why her mother acted in such a way and was able to re-establish a relationship with the mother.
There was an underlying theme of this being a repetitive loop for poor, single mothers (the mobius loop references and the fact rhat there are no men in the video and the old photos featured at various times are all of mothers and daughters; no fathers in sight).
But yes, irrespective of all that the mv was incredibly well filmed and the song itself was simply terrific. All three singers were fantastic, tho', like many others, I was especially impressed by Hyein's performance. The kid is only 15 and she is this talented. Quite extraordinary.

For those who don't understand the music video, I'll try to explain it based on my interpretation. IU (the mom) is dead, Tang Wei (the daughter) shouldn't have been there because that is the afterlife. But it turns out she was murdered. I watched the mv 10 times to come to this conclusion, but there may be a metaphorical undertone to it.

I say the whole music video 'mother' thing is a red herring. The song itself is about IU's infatuation with another woman. Trying to convince herself she's not a (L)esbian. She eventually reconciles herself to the idea and now feels free to name it. Mobius Strip is related to 8 and the song Eight was about missing Sulli. The relationship everyone knows about but nobody knows, as the song says.
Actually, it is about a mother and her daughter. You can see it from the MV, and a letter Tang Wei wrote to IU after the MV was shot. In the letter, she mentions her relationship with her mother and childhood memories, making it clear that this is not the relationship you imagine.
Mobius strip/infinity represent ongoing relationship of mother daughter relationship, best friends. IU stated in suchiwita with suga bts that shes now writing more on general topic when suga said he isnt sure of what to write anymore.. as some of her gen2 friends refer to her as someone warm n didnt change ..her friend even cry talking bout it in IU's pallete.
