I've never played in a punk band where the tone knob was rolled back - tone always 100% then break that shit off, because you don't need it. Neck pickup, toss it in the garbage, you don't need that either. Your pickup selector is now a mute switch in neck position. You can occasionally roll your volume back a hair for the intro of that one song, but after those 30 seconds are up, put it right back at 100%.
Tube screamer into a fairly distorted Orange or Marshall tube amp - Gain knob at 2 o'clock....volume knob as high as you need to go until the sound guy tells you to stop. EQ knobs at noon but a tiny bit more treble.
Put your tube screamer on the amp, not on the floor, you're not actually going to use it like a pedal, it stays on. Besides, pedals get kicked and stepped on with all the stupid kids walking all over your shit. This is also why your tuner stays on your amp.

Okay - for all of you aimlessly yelling "Oooh, you're not playing punk right, punks don't care about tone, buy the shittiest guitar possible so you can play REAL punk", you're clearly intentionally missing the point of the video.
The video is clearly meant to demonstrate how to replicate the traditional guitar tones found on classic punk records. Whether you like it or not, there is a distinct style all punk music follows. This video isn't about following the ideologies or culture of punk music, merely the sound often produced by the guitarists.
And for those that think Sum 41 doesn't fall under the punk genre label for the simple reason that you don't enjoy their music... I honestly don't know what to say to you.

The REAL reason they used that amp and why Steve Jones from the Sex Pistols used that amp is because Johnny Thunders used a fender twin reverb with reverb cranked to 10. Steve Jones has talked about the impact that Johnny Thunders had on his guitar playing many times and if you listen to the New York Dolls and especially Johnny Thunders & the Heartbreakers album LAMF you will hear how much Steve Jones's guitar playing was influenced by JT

    • @JohnnyFriendly
      @JohnnyFriendly 9 років тому +25

Kate Andrews Although I get your point, it's not entirely correct that punk was about not "giving a shit" about equipment.
Look at the guitars of some of the '70s punk acts, for example:
      Ramones - mosrites (hand-built custom-built guitar)
      Joe Strummer - '66 tele
Steve Jones - mixture of '50s and '70s Les Pauls
      and from the proto-punk years...
      Wilco Johnson - '62 tele
      Stooges - Mosrites (again)
All classy guitars, all chosen for a purpose.
Point is, Punk, like all genres of music, was always about getting an outstanding tone from good equipment. This cheap-equipment-plus-attitude-is-all-you-need stance was nothing more than phony posturing.
Saying that though, non of them would've played a modern fender if they were around today.

    • @LukeyPooky

Mark Felts Most punk bands I listen to use Marshall or Vox amps, with some rare exceptions. Maybe the shitty teenage punk band playing at your local bar has bad tone, but not the famous bands, for the most part anyways. The Misfits are just plain awful, I wouldn't even call them Punk. The only way you can label them is "Shit." And not all punk is tasteless and talentless. Bands such as Rancid are great. Just listen to the bass riff in the song Holiday Sunrise by that band Rancid.

Not true at all, Johnny Thunders's trade mark guitar a TV Yellow Gibson Les Paul Jr Double Cut was dirt cheap and wasn't a popular guitar at the time, nowadays it would cost an arm and a leg for that same guitar but back when he was in the New York Dolls and Johnny Thunders & the Heartbreakers it was a cheap and unfashionable guitar. If there wasn't the New York Dolls and then later Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers there may not have been the Ramones and there definitely wouldn't have been the Sex Pistols.

    • @TheSickNeeds

It was possible to get decent guitars cheap back then. Jonny Ramone paid $50 for his first Mosrite in the 70s. In the late 80s Cobain got a Fender Jaguar for $50...... look what it costs for an american made guitar these days. So they didn't necessarily spend their money on expensive equipment....they simply shopped wisely at a time when you could get some great stuff on a budget.

It would have been cool if you showed more with the Bass, Mid and Treble settings. It's not as easy as just cranking them all up and just start playing. Seen a few comments that kind of where like that. As in you just buy a guitar and amp as cheap as you can, plug it up, crank it and play. There's just a little more to it then that, not a whole lot but you do need to know the basics if you want to actually play.

I use a Morley aby spliiter, about every comment and review about it on the internet is negative, but I've had it for months, and I haven't been that careful with it and I have never had a problem with it. I cut up my Fender Frontman 2x12 because the fuck not, it feeds back more and has a more aggressive tone, especially with my fuzz pedals and stuff. On top of my fender is the Blackstar Studio 20, and paired with my Fender it has more volume then I would really ever ever ever need. I get midrange from the Blackstar because its tube, and ear piercing high end comes from the Fender.
