Wild that you made a video on this build today as I had just finishing leveling up Vanguard yesterday but decided to try out the melta rifle/combat knife (block) build earlier today and it's insanely fun and OP on Ruthless. Incredible survivabilty
This patch i kinda switched to sniper main i felt like the changes really benefitted sniper cqc build. I tried vangaurd blocking chainsword and while it hits hard AF like significantly harder I just really need my parry > gunstrikes to get the combat flow for vangaurd. So I am using balance knife which is pretty good. Although I just feel the sniper cqc with balanced knife and bolt carbine is just much more verstatile and i get hit WAYY less sometimes not at all.
Working in integrating the block knife with the same type build and honestly it slaps. The extremely higher damage and the decent speed of the knife just does work on majoris.
@kcop1882 i tried to really like the block knife on sniper cqc and it worked REALLY well against chaos since it hits hard but against tyranids specifically when a lictor or ravener jumps you those are the only times i really need a parry option. Every other time the block knife was great.
the Occulus now its very good. it has a sort of auto aim ....when using the scope...and deals a lot o damage from some distance to neuros and Zoans. it can deal with them and Carniflex from affar, unlike the Melta, when you get much more exposed. the balance chainsword is usable now. more AeO and damage. Slower its true. but its a good trade
A good tip is to do some games with balanced weapons to get a smooth transition from the regular fencing gameplay. I run this setup as well and the best part is that it feels almost like a redesign of the class 👌🏻 higher risk higher reward and it’s fun!
My biggest gripe that prevents me from going back to Vanguard is the weird targeting on the grapnel launcher and it not prioritizing Majoris enemies. I hate wasting a hookshot on a Sniper or a Sentry call only to fly into a gaunt at the last second. Maybe I'm just bad with it, but I'm pretty good at every other class. The fencing bug has been infuriating to deal with, I hate the timing of Balance weapons and the Gun Strikes are just too important to pass up for an AoE blast, but I do love that they reworked Block at least.
I cannot identify any gameplay improvements with this build compared to before. Majors seem to die all the same, the team perk didn't benefit anyone except the vanguard himself during this showcase, fighting gaunts seemed like a chore. If anything, people are trying hard to make this work because they want to mix up the gameplay they are used to after dumping 300+ hours into the game but man, this ain't it. (yet)
so the the patch is the "vanguard block" patch build?. no matter how yall want to twist it around the patch was a mistake and needs fixing. contested health is bugged and fencing/ balanced weapons are not working properly.. but i wouldn't know anything about the game ive only played it for over 600 hours and have everything maxed out and completed/cleared on lethal.
not so.....fencing still works...its harder...but works. Ando the balance versions work better now.. 10 % buff...more AeO ...its usable now. Im not an expert but finished lethal with it with a Vanguard. but I use the Occulus not the melta
After watching Secret Level, it got me wanting to hop back on SM2. I put the game aside as I accomplished everything I wanted to on my Vanguard. This was months ago though and at that time, with the melta, if you got yourself to 30% hp and weapon swapped spammed, you had infinite ammo. Is that still a thing?

Forced us back into using melta smh
Not saying impossible with the other 2 options, but much easier with the Melta.

Black chainsword does so much damage you don't even need a primary, it's just a bonus, you can pick anything
@ love that and the knives 🔪

Nah, still can completing obelisk lethal with fencing melee
