Love how Sam and Zee had perfect timing saying Blood Rage together! Fantastic!
As someone who's been watching since the Top 10's were a single combined list, I love that people are still bringing up Lice Shower. :)
It's the only one of those three made up games that has survived over the years 🤣
Can't remember the correct story. What was the background again?
@@LookAtTheBacon it was an April Fool's joke they added into an "Obscure Games" list where each made up a silly game to include. Zee's was Lice Shower and was a ridiculous but also interesting premise that was surprisingly believable.
@@bricelory9534 and ended up being produced as an actual game.
Great stuff. Love the format.
“You put me in a corner I’mma scratch you, meooow”
- Zee Garcia
Vindication. Just played it last night with 5 people and it rocks. Such fast turns because of the lovely point salad/sandbox structure.
I've played Specter Ops 5 player twice and I must say, if it wasn't for the length, it would be one of my all time faves. The traitor mechanic gives you so much to play with as the agent!
I agree with Zee about Jamaica. I really like this game, but we recently did a six player game and it bogged down drastically due to the fighting.
A lot of good suggestions, but two glaring omissions are Knizia and Mac Gerdts. Both designers excel at five player games (Ra; Antike; Modern Rt; Concordia; Traumfabrik). Their games are the first that spring to mind with five players.
Ticket to Ride, or Space Base are fantastic with 5. I wish Arcadia Quest had a 5 or 6 player expansion/rule set.
I have a similar pink vest. Maybe just a tad lighter. It looks good when I wear it with grey. Lavender looks good with grey too.
I think you guys are playing Specter Ops wrong. At 5, you're suppose to play with one hunter being a double agent. It becomes part hidden role game at that point. 4 gives the spy extra health and I think extra items.
We just learned Blood Rage a couple weeks ago. Our learning game was five players. I can see, a bit, why Sam says four players. But, we LOVED it, and loved it with five.
At five blood rage is a solid nine. But at 4 it’s a ten. And my only 10.
For reference my next highest game only ranks a nine. And only at two of its five player counts. So with five it’s amazing. But at four, it is unrivaled.
I really like flamme rouge at 5. It has risks of losing spaces on your move but is not as chaotic as 6.
I like Fury of Dracula at 2 and 3 for similar reasons, plus the fact that I have a hard time finding 5 players.
10) Western Legends
9) Mistborn: House War
8) Cthulhu Wars
7) Ethnos
6) Fire and Axe
5) Vindication
4) Evil High Priest
3) Godfather
2) Mare Nostrum
1) Battle for Rokugan
Special mentions
Age of war
Patriots and Redcoats
Heimlich and Co
High Society
Great list....needs to be redone for 2023!
I like The Others as much as Zee, so it's funny how much that game made Tom/Sam squirm whenever he put it on a list
I don't agree on opinions all the time, but the casual chatter between you three is nice to listen in on.
Loving the "top" videos.
Would be nice if you maybe made a top 30 and have it in 3 parts, each part showcasing 10 of each of your "top" games of whatever topic it is. there are a lot of games, and I know all 3 of you have played a fair few. I've noticed on a number of occasions someone saying it was in their top 20, or such.
I like Sidereal Confluence with 5. Its chaotic no matter what, but 5 just feels the best.
Stockpile is my go to 5 player game. I feel like it was designed for 5. I also like Ponzi Scheme at 5.
I love 3-4 players in games....normally if I hit 7 I'll get into 2 groups for a 3 and 4.
Some good games I've got for 5 would be tortuga, salem, betrayal, shadow hunters, lovecraft letter, deadwood, and mysterium :)
Battlestar Galactica's sweet spot is also at 5 players.
Good list, Tom! But you forgot one game you love: Francis Drake!
I love Timeline. I would never play the original card game with 5. Timeline Challenge, though, works great at 5.
It should be top games that allow at least 5 players, ranked for how good the individual games are with 5 players !!
I was pretty sure that Sam's Number 1 is gonna be Battlestar Galactica.
I'm completely baffled how it didn't make anyones list. That game is perfect for 5 players.
@@jumpyg1258I'm guessing either they forgot about it or grown away from it
Probably because it's not in print anymore
Specter Ops, I 100% agree with Sam. I love this game and didn't play till 5 until recently and everyone agreed that it may have been the best game of SO. Playing as the traitor in SO was absolute nail biting of 'please don't figure me out'. Had a moment where everyone knew it was me or the Beast, one of us had to be considering what happened. It was so perfect.
Wow that 5 in the Thumbnail looks just like the symbol for the tv channel channel 5 here in Sweden
Yuss! I play Games with my Sister, Girlfriend and her two sisters, I'm always struggling to find good 5 player games.
Now top 10 games for 6people!
This^
The are going to skip straight to 7 now just to spite you. :)
Yeah
I'm ready to bet my life that Tom's #1 is going to be Cosmic Encounter
Would be super helpful, very often six people around the table. I don’t like the idea of two games.
Antike II is awesome at 5 or 6. Very little downtime
El Grande, Wallenstein, Puerto Rico, Fury of Dracula: solid picks, but I think they back an impression I got over the years. Good games for bigger groups just get rarer these days. At least, when you leave out the party game like filler category, which are most of the other games in this video. It get's more important that games get a solo mode tucked on, then to support higher counts. Tom says, if he has 6 people, he'd rather play two different three player games. This might work in public meetings like at a game store or library. But when meet in private, it gets awkward. You meet and then need to separate. Or even worse, don't invite this guy or gal, because an additional player would make your desired game not hit the table or at least an inferior experience. I get the feeling, that the company experience gets less and less important for the game industry, and that's a pity, because it is something, where this hobby shines in my opinion. I also don't care much about app integration for that reason. Actually a different topic, but I think that also distracting from the social experience in board games.
Meh. i prefer lower players counts (mostly the 3, sometimes the 4) than more due to not having space and not knowing so many people who would play every game. My problem is seeing games that play best around a specific player count, and I either have too many people that want to play or too few.
Mansions of Madness we do a lot of discussing and joking around. Only app game i have. I feel some games may even be improved with an app, like for inventory management (reducing token overload or lots of writing down), hidden information (so only aspects supposed to be seen are seen), and complex mathematical calculations (maths can be fun, but not if you have people that take forever with calculating things or easily forget what they were doing).
They can also add small amounts of atmosphere through sound and animated visuals.
Between Two Cities or Between Two Castles of Mad King Ludwig - easily the best at 5, 6, or 7. I much prefer those with larger player counts that with 4 or fewer.
Jamaica only has two fights per player turn as a maximum doesn't it? You fight after moving, and if you have to move back you just go back to the next space you can afford. (No fighting)
Ethnos, 7 Wonders, Dixit, Cosmic Encounter, Lords of Waterdeep with expansion would make my list. As well as Blood Rage with the expansion.
Not sure why they hate on Blood Rage with 5 so much. It works quite well and its tied with 4 players for me.
Yedo has to be played with 5. I love it!
Zee really sold Sub Terra to me because of his description of the ending!
I think I actually love Blood Rage best at 5. I've done it twice and it was amazing both times.
Yeah, it's great at five. Four as well.
I... well... is that the Swedish channel 5 logo in the thumbnail? Interesting. xD Now to watch the list, may be back for more comments later. ;P
Was my thought also haha
Really wish the volume was higher on these videos
Get well soon Tom =(
Guys, you should put the kickstarter link in your videos!!
Our group, aged 72 to 13 in age love to play downforce, small world, camel up ,now into version 2, if we have 5 or 6 playing.
BSG with 5 is 2 cylons, 3 humans, regarded the best playercount. No wonky things with it.
"No-one" plays with sympathizer (or sympathetic cylon) when there are better alternatives in the expansions ( we love Cylon Leader Motives from Daybreak, Mutineer not so much ) - or just the 4p/6p resource-reduction variant.
I agree that Patriots and Redcoats plays great with 5 (or 6) players! Good choice, Sam!
Scepter of Zavandor is my top game for a 5 player game.
Caylus and Istanbul are good options, too.
Ethnos and Royals are good 5 players games and would be in my top 10
What about Sword and Sorcery?!
Way better than Zombicide BP, turn order is up to the players and having 5 characters can occasionally give you a slight advantage over playing with 4.
My chose would be Istanbul. I adore intense but managable blocking in 5player game.
So Tom started covid, nice job Tom.
You guys are playing specter op wrong, it’s only supposed to be two hunters at 3 people (the hunter just doesn’t get any bonuses health or anything)
My game group is almost all the time 5 or 6 people. To the point that we have many 4 player games we haven't been able to play as much as we want to. And the other thing is that we like heavy games, so whenever I'm considering a game to get, my first filter is the player count. I only get 5 or higher. Though I have some 4 or less players games for filler.
And that idea of playing two 3 player simultaneously is so awful for me. How about you guys?
I agree it is a very bad idea.
First game i thought: El Grande
Great games missing from these lists: Medici, Pax Pamir, Sidereal Confluence, Architects of the West Kingdom, Acquire and Concordia.
Wonder what Tom's ideal number is for Cosmic Encounter.
He said 6.
Jeezes, you guys have very diverse taste compared to me. I could never play most of these games.
Awesome wardrobe Tom 👍👍👍👍☹
Love that vest!!!
Stockpile should have been on there somewhere😊
What's the most people you have had in one game?
Hmmm, I would think the games listed here will be best or good for 5 players because that is what the title suggests, not just any ol' game that plays with 5 even if it's not good for 5.
Millennium Blades!
Dirk Henns Speculation is great at 5
6 one player games. I don't need neighbors! :D
Got the video 1k likes let’s go!! I’m hoping Cthulhu wars is on the list
Bang - Dice or Cards - should only ever be played at 5 counts. I've seen many different collections of people / player counts play it, and once you pass five or six, you've entered into IS IT OVER YET? territory.
Spyfall - 14:34 It's actually a 3.333 percent improvement that the spy won't be asked first, but regardless.. Six to Eight usually works from what I've seen. Also if teaching, the teacher should deal the first "scene" out (making sure they are not the spy) and then have players ask them the first two questions, before leaving the table. This relieves the pressure on the spy and shows people an example of how to answer in "roundabout" ways.
3- player next, please
The lack of Hansa Teutonica saddens me... Also Dogs of War is a fantastic 5 player game, but no one ever played that.
Don't stress it Tom, I really like Rising Sun with 5. I find it give the game a more political feel in that there are 5 vying tribes that allow you to play one person or faction off of the other... a much more social game which changes it up from normal.
TOM?! What happened to Kemet?! I was waiting lol
Same.
I think he prefers it with 4
It’s a different game at every count. But there is nothing about 5 players that makes it suddenly shine. I own it and love it, but I thought the list was for games that you immediately think of when you have five players. If you are wanting to play Kemet, then it’s on your mind no matter the player count.
@@eddieb8054 Oh, I've never had a chance to play with 5, and I always assumed it would be better, as it opens up that hall of God's across the Nile, as well as extremely reduces the amount of tiles you have access to each round. Have you played with Seth? What do you think?
Nick Rekieta's Cross Eyed Wife the extra spot opening helps, but it’s not like there is more to do. Since each person will have access to 40% fewer power tiles. Ta seti is almost a requirement simply for the black pyramids and tiles if playing with five peeps. So five is still great. But not suddenly more amazing.
As to Seth, I flipped when I saw it was released. So I waited for the review from the dice tower.
I don’t have enough cash to buy without trying first. So I needed a trusted review.
The moment I heard that it’s all vs one, I was no longer interested. I don’t enjoy that style of war game. I like hidden movement all vs one’s. But not war games. Nor miniature games. So I have not played Seth. I was excited till the review though.
We want to see the games
King of Tokyo...
I love you zee, but I don’t think that is right. With 4 players, you are trying to survive 3 attacks while in Tokyo before your turn again. You said it is harder with 5 players to survive more attacks. But with 5 players there should be two people in Tokyo. So wouldn’t you only have to survive 3 attacks from people outside of Tokyo, the same as a 4 player game? Or am I playing the game wrong?!
This was my thought exactly!
Bang on Caleb. Zee needs to push this into his "it's better at 6 than 5" category like he did with Spyfall lols
Interesting...
My Top 10 5-Player Games
1. Blood Rage
2. Mansions of Madness 2e
3. Scythe
4. Terraforming Mars
5. Rising Sun
6. The Godfather: Corleone's Empire
7. Lords of Waterdeep
8. Coup/The Resistance
9. Century: Golem Edition
10. Ethnos
Okay, glad its not just me for Blood Rage. Haha
“You’re a closet alpha gamer...!” There’s no closet about it!
The Others for the win!
I'm sorry, but I really need to ask: Did you guys just steal the Swedish Kanal 5 logo for your thumbnail?
sv.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanal_5
Why spyfall 2 over spyfall 1? I thought they were exactly the same game.?
Rising Sun is definitely amazing in 5 players, hell Blood Rage as well! My group generally loves playing in 5 or 6 players whenever possible. I always feel like a higher count of players makes everything more interesting and harder to predict. Rising Sun is definitely amazing in 5. With 3 it's... meh! TOO MUCH SPACE ON THE BOARD AND NOT ENOUGH COMPETITION!
I dont understand el grande and rising sun why have both when you can play the one you like more
My top ten favorites with five players:
1. Battlestar Galactica
2. Glory to Rome
3. Room 25
4. Formula D
5. Myth
6. Pax Pamir
7. Millions of Dollars
8. Spartacus: A Game of Blood & Treachery
9. Sons of Anarchy: Men of Mayhem
10. Space Alert
I love Architects of the west Kingdom and roll for the galaxy at 5.
Carlos, I have difficulty keeping track of all players' tableau in 5 player Roll for the Galaxy (similar to the issue mentioned for >5 7 Wonders). This might be a result of my friends not announcing their moves. Any suggestions for keeping up otherwise are welcome.
@@Brontalawrence You got a great point, my friends announce their moves as we go into each phase, we also read any new developed technology effect or planet.
Architects works at five but it doesn't add anything extra beyond 4 players other than time.
Interesting.
Roll for the Galaxy is excellent at 4, but great at 5. Watching people double on actions is highly amusing.
How bout TMNT SotP Tom?
This episode somehow foreshadows the current pandemic haha
Zee!!! You don't move back after loosing combat in Jamaica.
Santiago, Clippers
King of Tokyo and Dixit are good at 5
Need 3 player list
Tom, you sound tired and stressed. Please try to relax. We love You guys and what you do
In Specter Ops with 3 players each hunter player controls a SINGLE hunter. Either Tom plays it wrong or misremembered. Only at 2 players does the hunter control 2 figures.
BSG you do cylon sympathizer at even numbers, so 4 and 6. That's why 5 is the sweet spot for BSG. You got 2 cylons and 3 humans (MAYBE 1 player has both cylon cards, but then they can pass it.
I know Sam gets flak for putting a particular game in every Top Ten...but I actually think his entire list is in every Top Ten, but sorted differently based on the list category.
Pax Pamir, Sidereal Confluence, Concordia, Flamme Rouge, Medici, Yedo, Acquire.
I disagree with Tom here on catacombs. It has player elimination and it happened to us where 1 player was eliminated early and sat around watching for the next hour or so. I think 3 players is best where each non overlord has 2 characters.
Kemet? BSG?
Kingsburg and Abyss with Leviathan expansion for me!
Yikes! I agree with Tom, too crowded at five. But Abyss, I love it but that 5 player option I'm never playing it again. Way too much downtime and game length.
I don't see the added value of playing Time Line with more players - 5 seems like you're just sitting around longer without, again, any added play benefit for having more players.
Why don't they ever mention Secret Hitler on this channel? The game is amazing and is a significant improvement on The Resistance/Avalon, etc. It scales extremely well and with 5-9 players it is a blast.
Wait a sec, for spector ops 3 player, I thought 2 people are each one has only one hunter. I've played this game as a 2 player and 4 player. 2 players was an amazing back and forth! I figured a 3 player would be similar to a 2 player experience except more argueing. With 4 players it was way to hard on the agent. I've avoided because of the reviews on bgg and Tom. But if Sam says it's good ... should I try it?
5 player version I mean
