Have been riding motorcycles for around 50 years. The only bikes that scared me were dirt bikes. I rode a Honda 450 not sure of the model, but just trying to hit the power band scared the shit out of me. I respect the hell out of dirt riders, it’s wide open or nothing! I owned a Honda 450 enduro and that was fun to ride on and off the road. The only thing was if you had to hit the brakes real hard it tended to lay down. Was riding down a country paved road and all of a sudden a flatbed truck backed out of a field across both lanes. Had to hit the brakes or die, instantly went down and as I was skidding down the road the bike flipped around and instead of the bike heading for the truck, the bike was pushing me towards the truck. I was wearing a bright orange jacket, so it wasn’t that he couldn’t see me, luckily he pulled back into the place he came out of far enough that I skidded past him. But to get back to the dirt bike, never got on another one. Just wasn’t for me!

5150mxVW I rode it home, bought a new headlight and sold it to a crazy wild dirt biker. He rode it to work for years after that. He would race it across fields to beat us to the bar after work. All my bikes from then on were street bikes. Sold my last bike, Honda 900 Custom a year ago, now I have a Honda Metropolitan. Scootering around town gives me my two wheel fix these days!

this past summer my brother and I were gifted quite a few things from a neighbor of ours who was cleaning up his property. among those things was an 80's vintage Honda TRX200 and an early 90's TRX300. We were able to get both up and running with minimal parts (carbs, tires, hoses, etc.) That's one advantage of living in the Dallas area is that, unlike Florida, there is no salt in the air from the ocean, and unlike where you're at up north, no real amounts of snow to speak of. Looking forward to this tear down. I know Mustie has done quite a few bikes over the years. He may have some usable parts kicking around.

I raced a stock 1986 CR125 until 1996 and was pulling holeshots on brand new bikes, even having racers come up to me after the race just to check out this old bike that ripped out of the gate! That was a great bike! Honda did something special in the mid 80's that I think other brands hadn't figured out yet.
Although you have a very lofty goal in front of you, the time you spend with your son during this project is a big investment in his emotional savings account that'll pay big dividends, even if it never does run.
Although given your patience and are posting vids I have no doubt that it will run and can't wait to see that day, have fun with it and good luck. I'll look around my "inventory" of old dirt bike parts to see if I have anything laying around from that 86 CR125 and send them your way to pay it forward if I can.

Happy new year Jason and josh!
As you know, I love old vw’s, and older cars in general....but my employment history is when I was 19, I worked in the parts department of the biggest Honda distributor in Europe, based in bristol England.
We’d get calls from all over the world!
At the time, Honda never discontinued anything at all!
I know that’s no longer the case sadly.
What may help you, is if you can find a parts catalogue.
This would show you what is supposed to be there, and what order it is assembled.
It may also help you locate parts by part number.
I look forward to seeing how you get on with this...
